PC doesnt recognize Ipod anymore

I'm having a similar problem to everyone else here. I've read all the other threads but thought I would start a new one since the more there are the more likely to get AAPL's attention.
I never had any problems with my Ipod (15GB) through various itunes upgrades. Until this most recent one. I've spent the last 5 hours trying all sorts of things, including all pieces of advice given on the other threads. I even rolled back the restore point on my cpu. But nothing works- my PC which is running Windows XP Home Edition- does not recognize my iPod at all. Previously when I plugged my iPod into my cpu it would immediately show me the screen saying not to disconnect and iTunes would open on my pc. Now, all the iPod does is charge when connected through the firewire port.
For the life of me I can't figure out how to get my pc, much less iTunes, to connect to my iPod.
I'm relieved that others are suffering the same problem, but I'm surprised AAPL hasnt addressed it yet. People were posting about this, en masse, two weeks ago.
Absurd situation.

My computer says the apple ipod is there but itunes won't show it let alone update it. it says my ipod needs to be updated for use but the ipod updater (even the latest version 23-9-2005)just freezes while trying to start up. nobody has any answers and if you call they say they can't help you because it's been over a year. i have the 20 gb model and it seems like a lot of people who got theirs the same time are having the same problem. has anyone been able to fix it?

    Hey iFloatHigh,
I found two articles that can help you out. The troubleshooting you'll do depends on the type of computer you're trying to sync the iPod to. The first is for Windows, the second for Mac:
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows

  • Laptop doesnt recognize iPod Nano

I have big problem. That other seems to have also. The computer doesnt recognize the iPod nano. I have a week with it and it worked well for a few days but I think that after upgrading the iTunes it stopped working. Now when I pugged in the USB port it says it has a Massive Storage Devoce like if were a USB Key. Before it used to show an iPod on my computer and on iTunes but now it doesnt. It seems like it assigns a wrong driver to it.
I tryed to do all the steps, resteing, trying other usb ports, restarting the pc, reinstalling the software (iPod and iTunes) and nothing. I even disable the USB power saving option because Im working with a laptop.
    All these already donde
    1. Reset your iPod.
    2. Retry with a different USB port.
    3. Restart your computer.
    4. Reinstall iPod and iTunes software.
    5. Restore your iPod.
I will answer the questions I saw in a related article to see if this info can help to solve my problem.
Do you also have the little charging symbol on the iPod?
    Yes, and it charges well
Do you have songs on the iPod?
Yes like 2.85 MB that I syncronized in the first week that worked fin
    Did it ever work?
    Yes for a week
Does it moubnt on the desktop?
On My computer show is it as a storage device
Does it show up in iTunes?
    Nop
Does the iPod display "Do Not Disconnect?"
    Ye sit shows it
    Hope someone can help me
    Thanks in advance

  • Itunes doesnt recognize ipod

what do you do when itunes wont recognize your ipod touch?

    See
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
    - Then do the other actions of:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
paying special attention to item #5
    - New cable and different USB port
    - Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause

  • Computer doesnt recognize ipod at all

i have a first generation ipod nano that i haven't used in a while. I'm trying to get it to connect, but every time i attach USB to computer, the ipod switches to the do not disconnect screen, my computer makes the notification sound that a device is inserted, but i cant find the device anywhere, not in my computer, and not in itunes.
if any information that would help me reformat the ipod so my computer will recognize it then that would be great
    thanks.

Your iPod's warranty: One year from the purchase date of hardware coverage, 6 months of free shipping and handling on replacements, and 1 free call to tech support within the first 90 days.
The applecare protection plan can only be purchased within the first year of owning your iPod (while it is still covered under the original limited warranty), and yes, it is $59 ($47 if you're a student).
If you believe you're still covered under your warranty, enter the serial number on http://www.apple.com/support/ and find out. If you are still covered, have Apple send you a replacement iPod:
    http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod
I'm not sure what exactly you meant in your last post, but I hope you find this information useful. BTW- If you're just going to say "there's no point" when someone posts a suggestion... don't bother posting a question.

  • Cannot update itunes and doesn't recognize ipod anymore

cannot install the new version 6.04. I have gone through the support section. It states to update the following registry:
    # In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, double-click Common Administrative Tools.
    # In the Value data box of the Edit String dialog box that appears, type the following line, and then click OK:
    %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
The problem is I don't have a line that states "common administrative tools" to update. I am using windows xp. Any suggestions.
Also, Itunes no longer even recognizes when my ipod is plugged in.

Hmm....I just had another thought.  All the machines are running Win7 SP1, BUT the 2 that can sync with MSE installed are 32bit versions, however the one that can't is 64bit.  Not sure if that makes any difference though.  All are clean installs with Win7SP1 media, not SP1 installed later.

  • USB/CPU doesnt recognize IPOD even after 5Rs. MAJOR HELP!!

The other night i was putting some songs/pod thought was fine at the time. The next night i wanted to add some more stuff so i plugged in my ipod in the laptop and suddenly a message came up on the bottom right saying new hardwire/device is being added (something like that). Then the next message says "USB device is ready to use" then "USB device is not recognized." So i did most of the 5Rs since im not able to do the last R cause it wont recognize it. Reseted, reinstalled numerous times. Forgot the next 2. But the last one I remember is "Restore." It wont let me do that since it wont even recognize it. I just got done reformatting my laptop which took some time and it is still giving me the same messages. The ipod is working fine, it just wont load up on the laptop. I bought my video ipod around the time it came out about 2 years ago i think. I didnt buy the warranty either. I am leaving the country in a couple days and i would like to add some more stuff to my ipod to have on the plane. Someone please help me!

Without any futher information, it may not be the iPod, it could be the computer. If the computer seemed to recognize it as a new device, there could have been something that corrupted it in the device list. You may want to go into "My Computer" and check properties, and hardware and see if there are any conflicts. Remove any conflicts, or plugging it in and removing it from the device list and letting it recognize it again might help. When it loaded as new hardware, it could have caused a device conflict that will not allow it to work correctly.
    Hope this helps.

  • Updater stuck on "initializing", iTunes wont recognize Ipod anymore

    Hi,
Just got a new Ipod over a week ago, uploaded all my songs and everything seemed to be fine...until today - i've recharged it on my laptop and tried turning it on but it didn't work - went on the support site and finally restored the iPod to Factory Settings. When I connected my iPod again to the Laptop, iTunes didn't recognize my iPod. So I've downloaded the latest iTunes and tried updating the software.
Now, when i try to update with the iPod Updater 2006-03-23, it gets stuck on "initializing" and iTunes won't recognize my iPod either.
When I click on My Computer, it comes up as "Removable Disk E" and in Device Manager, it comes up under Disk Drives "Apple iPod USB Device"
When i switch on my iPod, it seems to be working fine...but i just cannot download any music on it coz my iTunes won't recognize it...
    Please help!!!!
I use Windows XP, Dell Inspiron 630m and iPod 30GB
    Thanks,
    Cornelia
    Dell Inspiron 630m   Windows XP

    thanks, i'd appreciate that...
i went to the ipod store today and have been told that my ipod is fine but my software causes the issues. I'm supposed to delete everything and restore again. Trying to do that now but it's still not working yet. I had Tunebite installed to convert wma to mp3s as well, that might have caused all the trouble. there might probably still some hidden files i didnt get rid of because when i reinstall iTunes, my iPod is still not recognized... i keep u posted as well...

  • Windows nor iTunes does not recognize iPod anymore

    I have a major problem that I can't comprehend.
OK, so my hard drive did some weird stuff on me and I had to repair it. Afterward, a whole bunch of things got messed up so I had to repair my Windows XP installation.
And now, when I connect the iPod, it doesn't show up in either Explorer or iTunes.
However, when I go to the Device Manager, I see that it knows it is connected. Also, when I go into Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management (Local), I can see the iPod. However, whenever I try to mount it under whatever drive letter, it does so, but I still cannot see it in explorer. Then if I restart it seems like it didn't do anything. Oddly enough, when I do assign it a drive letter, it does show itself in iTunes and starts syncing. However, of course it doesn't show in Explorer and it disappears again the next time I startup the computer.
I've tried everything from uninstalling/re-installing iTunes (down to the program files folder and Temp folder) to pretty much everything else in the Knowledge base.
I'm just stuck here. And I've just totally overhauled my computer a few months ago and do not want to do that again unless I ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT A DOUBT have to.
Thanks ahead of time for any help.
iPod 5th Gen (30GB)   Windows XP

I am having a similar problem myself.
Since I don't use system restore on my computer I am wondering if anyone has tried restoring their computer to an earlier date when everything was working?
Like I said in another post I have this funny feeling that this has been caused by a Windows crit update. My reasoning is because I have read about 20 similar posts with people ranging from bought it a few days ago to bought it a year ago or so. So the age of the Ipod varies and I don't think everyone of them had Itunes 7 installed yet. But like many things I could be wrong.

  • ITunes doesnt recognize iPod mini, which only charges

I just bought my iPod mini 2 days ago and still can't figure this out. Everything seems to be going ok--iTunes is working fine and I can upload music, but it won't transfer into the ipod. I believe in the Source list (in iTunes) there should be an ipod symbol? But there is none. When I connect the ipod to the computer, it only charges. I've tried resetting the ipod, restarting the computer, deleting the software and downloading it again, and nothing. I've tried updating it and it says "Plug in an iPod to update it, which I do, but nothing happens.
Any help would be a LIFESAVER, as I am extremely frustrated by this and am about ready to punch a wall here.

Thanks for your advice... The problem is that iPod doesn't appear in iTunes, so I clicked on the link and followed the instructions for putting the iPod into disc mode so I can reset it. I got as far as (see the picture of the checkmark) to the part where it says 'Disconnect iPod from the power adapter and connect it to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"' I did that and nothing happened. My iPod still says "OK to disconnect."
So I haven't the faintest idea what's wrong. I checked the system requirements again, and I believe that my computer meets all of them. Guess I'm at another dead end.
Should I just try to get all this iPod stuff--the cd, cable, everything, replaced? Hopefully by doing so, that might solve whatever the problem is?

  • Ive been using the same ipod and same account for awhile now and all of a sudden my itunes account doesnt recognize my ipod anymore. how can i fix this problem without deleting my ipod and resyncing?

can somebody explain to me why my itunes library wont recognize my ipod anymore. and can somebody help me fix it without having to delete all 951 of my files and resyncing it?

Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB indicates corrupted files.
