PC Folders to MacBook

Hello..
I am new to this Mac system... I have been a Windows guy for as long as I can remember.. The last Apple product I has was a Macintosh... So I am have a bit of issues with this and really debating about returning it back to the store and just going with a PC.. The main reasons for my purchase was looks and battery life as you cannot get either the battery life or sleek look from any PC's out there currently.. Now playing with the OS I have found things I like and then there are things I don't like so hopefully this can be solved if not then off to the store I go...
I was trying to bring files from my PC to the Mac... I have everything in folders and when I hooked my external up to the mac it read the harddrive no problem.. The problem was when I tried to drag the folders (or even open them on my harddrive) the mac will not open then.. I know programs and such are not compatible but come on the thing can't even open up a simple folder.. I find this very frustrating because if I want to share things from a friends computer then I would have to make sure that they are not in folders this is a little frustrating.
Any help on this or am I stuck with having to take everything out of folders and putting the individual files on the external to bring them to the Mac?... I find this to be very inconvenient. Say my songs for instance are all seperate into different folders depending on the type of music.. So now I would have transfer all those files separating each time from my harddrive to the mac because if I put all my songs together on the harddrive I would be lost as to folders the songs belong to.. Any suggestions??
Do I have too much computer for what I need.. As much as I like the Mac the price was over $2500.. All I do is Web surfing, check email, listen to music and watch movies... Not much more.. I mean $2500 compared to say a PC for $500-1000 that is comparable specs or even better specs... I know this is a APPLE forum not PC so I won't get much as for this part..
Thanks

It sounds like you've copied the files and folders across but the permissions aren't right for you to now open them - run Disc Utility and Repair Permissions on the hard drive. If they haven't copied across OK then perhaps that drive is a format the Mac cannot read ?
The files themselves inside the folders must be formats the Mac can read so are they things like Word, Excel etc. and have you got those programs for Mac installed ?
I run Mac's and PC's on the same network and regularly move files and folders back and forth between then without any problems - all you have to look out for are some characters in filenames that don't work across both systems basically ... Samba file sharing works great and if you are using FAT32 format on your PC then the Mac can read and write all file types with ease.

• Cannot Open Some Public Folders on MacBook

I have several users using my macbook. Each user has their own user account. For user accounts created before "Personal File Sharing" was switched on, other users (except for root) cannot open the "Public" or "Drop" folders. Public and Drop folders for user accounts created after "Personal File Sharing" was switched on may be opened by all users. Both the pre- and post- "Personal File Sharing"-switched-on folders have the correct permissions settings.
The only work-around I can think of to ensure every user has Public and Drop folders that every other user can open is to delete the pre-"Personal File Sharing"-switched-on user-accounts and create new ones.
Any other suggestions? Is there some other setting I need to change?
Help much appreciated.
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9)

When you say "cannot open the "Public" or "Drop" folders, do you mean that the folders are available in the list of shares but cannot be opened, or that the folders aren't available at all? I'm not sure if this is related to your problem, or what accounts for the different behaviours, but it seems in "Tiger", new accounts are often created with an empty 'sharedDir' property. This property in the user record specifies which of the user's folders is to be shared for non-user access in AFP, and usually has a value of "Public". The "Public" folders of users without this property set will not appear in the list of available "shares" that appears after connecting to an AFP server.
To see what the current value of 'sharedDir' is on a given account, try opening "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering the command below, substituting 'username' with the user's "short name":
nicl . -read /users/username sharedDir

The expected output is 'sharedDir: Public', but if it is just 'sharedDir:' or 'No such key: sharedDir', then that would explain why those users' "Public" folders aren't available for personal file sharing. To set the value to "Public", make sure you are logged in to an "admin" account and try this command:
sudo /usr/bin/nicl . -create /users/username sharedDir Public

Substitute a user's name as above, and enter your "admin" password when prompted (your password will not be visible as you enter it - just press the <Return> key after you are done).

• Sharing folders between MacBook Pro and workgroup in windows 7

In September 2013 I was able to share folders between a MacBook Pro and 2 Windows 7 computers where all 3 computers belonged to the same workgroup.
Leelannee Cochran (at that time an Apple Level 3 support person) was satisfied with how I did it and I understood her to say that it would be "memorialized" by Apple.
I had a lightening incident where my cable modem was fried and had to be replaced. Now, I am not able to share the files in the MacBook Pro
Would someone tell me how to share files - unfortunately, I had not kept the notes

Thank you Team ZigZag
I have had 3 different vendors where I had to go to "higher" level support. The most recent occasion was with my router where I overheard the "supervisor" tell the 1st level tech support person "there is no way that the router will work with a workgroup.
I pleaded that it had done so before I had to replace my cable modem. Finally, I was able to share files between two windows 7 computers in the same workgroup and wrote to the manufacturer that I had done so, the reply was that they
are not responsible for 3rd party vendors!
As I mentioned, I was able to work my way to Leelannee Cochran who was a 3rd level support person at Apple, and she too was, initially, very skeptical and when I succeeded she offered to memorialize what I had done. I had to use my methods to
re-establish the MacBook on several occasions as a "sharing" member of the workgroup. I probably have lost my nerve and therefore am unable to recall exactly what I did
I found that a third vendor, despite the claim that their product would work with Mac OS the higher level support person was using me as a "resource" but my problem was that my computer kept crashing!
Trust me, frontline (1st Level) tech support are normally very competent but it is not easy to reach higher level tech support persons when their expertise runs out and are reluctant to call for higher level support!
I have had similar nightmares with support and that why I volunteer here and elsewhere. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies. I have found persistence is the key. I have, in the middle of a level 1 call where they said there was nothing
they could do and there was no supervisor aound, hung up and immediately redialed and wonder of wonder got the supervisor within 5 mins.
Good Sleuthing on your part

• How do i copy my folders from macbook air to my toshiba external hard drive?

i have been trying to copy files on macbook air to my external hard disk which i used for my windows pc, n=but im unable to do so. and i even cannot delete the files on the hard disk. but i can copy the files on hard disk to my air. can you please explain me the required process properly. thank you

The external drive is probably formatted for the PC using NTFS which the Mac can read but not write to. You have two basic solutions to continue using that drive and I don't recommend the first. 1) install drivers on the Mac to allow it to read an NTFS formatted drive. I don't recommend this because all too often an Apple update breaks the 3rd party drivers and you are stuck until the drivers are updated 2) reformat the drive (or partition it) so that the Mac and Windows can read it. exFAT is a format that fits the bill but remember that formatting the drive will erase the data. Partitioning is another option - creating two logical drives from one disk - one for the Windows and one for the Mac. Although there are programs that can perform a non-destructive partition it is always a good idea to backup the drive just in case.
Of course a third option is buying an external drive just for the Mac.

• Any way to set the Finder "Show View Options" across all folders on MacBook Pro?

Hello. I would like to know if there's a way to set one Finder / folder view setup (Show View Options) across every folder and sub-folder on OSX?
I don't like having to manually set up the "view options" for each and every folder from scratch .. I have 1 setup / template that I like and would like to apply it across the board to every folder that I ever open on OSX..
Is this possible?

At the bottom of the window that opens in Show View Options there should be a button that enables you to make the current settings the default.

• HT201376 How to erase macbook pro

My Macbook Pro has gone very slow. I have completed a back up. I would like to do the followings:
1. Clean my Macbook Pro and may be erase all files and folders from Macbook Pro,
2. Remove a few files from Back up on RAID external drive
3. Put back all remaining files/folders (which are now on back up disc) on Macbook Pro.

Make sure you have TWO complete backups. Cause if something happens to the backup while you are erased, you are left with nothing.
Secondly, use this guide to determine if you have excess files you can take care of:
http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
Repair the directory if you aren't too full:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6412
If matters are still slow, do you have any third party system maintenance tools that modify system cache? Those should be removed.
MacKeeper is the worst as this tip illustrates, since its uninstallation directions from its developer haven't worked:

• Is there a way to merge/migrate my local home folder to a network account

My family has a number of Macbooks and a couple of iMacs and we've been thinking we'd like centralized storage for our media collection and other files and I'd like an easier way to deal with these machines to keep them updated, etc. Also we swap laptops and desktops depending on who needs to do what at a particular moment. Is there a way to migrate an existing home folder on a macbook to an account on the server. What I would like to be able to do is to be able to log into any computer in my home and have it look like "my" computer, with files, settings etc... Since I am new to the server world I am confused by the terminology re: network accounts and mobile accounts. Is there a good guide someone could recommend to get me started. Thanks.

Hi Yodalogger,
I hope you have yourself sorted. I've been through alot of pain with lion server, it's very buggy at best.
Your best bet is SolidWood's suggestion of network accounts if you are constantly on the same network. I use this at home and it works very well. For simplicity, you can use WorkGroup Manager for this as it's more intuitive!
If, you need a mobile account, this is what I did.
I migrated local macbook accounts to server machine (migration assistant).
I renamed the /User home folders on macbook to _backup. For safety.
I deleted local accounts from macbook. Keep your _backup home folders! Also, you will need to have a local Admin account in place. Make sure you do not delete it.
On Server. You will have local accounts created for all your migrated macbook accounts. Just remove the accounts in system preferences but ensure you leave the /User home folders in place when prompted.
On server. I created the new users (old mackbook accounts) and groups in the server app. This doesn't create or overwrite your existing home folders. So go ahead and name them exactly the same as before and make sure the accounts match your home folder's names.
On server, using profile manager, I set up mobility etc., for the device. That is, you need to enroll your macbook with the server and configure services for it in profile manager. You can add a placeholder for this in profile manager to configure stuff.
A handy tip to alleviate all the automatic push settings pain and heartache is to set the general payload to manual. You can then wip up the profile manager from your macbook to install the profiles manually. (easily done).
On Macbook, login with local admin account.
On Macbook, go to system prefs and accounts, set up your open directory stuff in the login options.
On Macbook, log out of admin. Back at the login screen, you should see your admin account and 'Other.' Give it a few minutes or so to figure this out. It needs to contact the server etc. for info.
Once you have 'Other' click on it and login with one of your new network accounts. This will log you in as a network account - you should see all your usual settings that previously existed on your macbook when it was a local account.
At this point, you whip up profile manager. http://yourserver.local/profilemanager Change yourserver to the name of your server.
Login to profile manager with your admin account. I do this as I will be downloading a few profiles that only admin has access to.
So, you need to download a trust profile, your device profile, and a profile for remote management if you have set this up. You may have seen various download buttons knocking around the the interface. In downloads double click these to install (if it doesn't do this automatically).
Log out of everything.
Log back in with one of your network accounts. This time you should be prompted to create a mobile account. Say yes and let it sync your home folders from server to macbook.
Once each mobile account is created, you can then further define user/group settings in profile manager. You download these by logging into http://yourserver.local/mydevices as the user and download the appropriate settings.
I think thats it. Sorry, if its not detailed enough - I'm presuming you know yourself around a mac! I have to say the process is straightforward but Lion Server is not. I do not get consistent results with it and I'm still trying to tame it...
By far the easiest option is network accounts. Mobile accounts need more attention.
I hope this helps (and anybody else!)
Paul.

• When copying folder to external drive, "An older item named.." appears even when the dates are the same

When I am manually backing up folders from Macbook Pro Mountain Lion to an external drive, the dates for folders are being misread? It will say "An older item named.." every time. I checked the dates and times and they are the same on Mountain Lion and the External drive for the files and the folders. It should send me back a message saying "An item named “” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the one you’re moving?"
When I try to move an individual file to the external drive and the dates are the same, I get the correct message - "an item named "" already exists..." so the issue is only with the folders.
I have only had this issue since the update to OS 10.8. Any Suggestions? thanks

The modification date of a file is stored internally in seconds. The Finder rounds off to the nearest minute. If the age of two files differs by less than 30 seconds, they'll seem to have the same modification date in the Finder.

• External Hard Drive Not Displaying Pictures

So I recently backed up all my pictures from my MBP to my Western Digital My Passport 1 TB external hard drive to free up some space from my MBP. Before ejecting the hard drive, I had made sure that the files were all transferred completely so that no problems should arise later. I then proceeded to delete all the pictures off of my MBP. When I went to open the hard drive today, my pictures are nowhere to be found, but when looking at the memory on the hard drive, the amount being used is exactly the amount of space that the pictures had taken up. I also tried using EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, which shows the picture folder on the hard drive, with all the pictures, but they cant be transferred back. So my question is, how can I get access to these pictures. I know they're on the hard drive, and i've already tried getting them back by showing the hidden folders.

Welcome to AD!
When you moved your "library" to the exHD, exactly what got moved? There are 2 parts to an itunes library:
1. The actual library content of music files, video, podcasts, books, etc
2. The library database with ratings, play counts, and those play lists you are missing
The database is a file name iTunesLibrary.itl and I suspect the version you want is back on the main PC's C: drive.
The default in Vista/W7 is here
C:\Users\Katrina\Documents\My Music\iTunes
Changing that preference only affects FUTURE additions to a library, by the way.

• Can't load Time Machine backups

A few days ago (after getting my MacBook back from having the Logic card (?) changed) I started having problems with Time Machine. It wouldn't backup anymore. I figured it couldn't find my backup drive (an external FireWire hard drive), so I entered the Time Machine settings and selected the drive again.
Backups now work fine, but Time Machine wants me to do a 100% backup. It won't load the previous backups I have, for some reason.
When checking in Finder, in my Backups.backupdb contains two folders:
"Andreass MacBook" and "Andreass Macbook 2". The first folder is dated February 17, which is the day I turned my computer in. The second folder is up-to-date, most likely from when I re-selected the external hard drive.
I have checked that the computer name is still "Andreass MacBook", so this is not the problem.
Can anyone help me out?
/Andreas

• My Macbook Air does not show up on my network to any of my other computers, Other computers on my network appear and disappear, some shared folders are not accessible

My Macbook Air with Lion does not show up on my network to any of my other computers (PC's) , even though it is connected to my wifi and does access the Internet. In addition, my other computers sometimes show up in Finder and sometimes they're not there. Sometimes they do show in Finder and when I click on them, I get "Connection Failed", other times, they connect. Also some shared folders on those other computers, which are PC's are not accessible, even though fully shared. My network is Apple Airport Extreme and works perfectly otherwise, including all PC's being able to see each other. Help would be much appreciated

I got the same problem. I want to access my shared folder on my home windows7 from my MBA. Tried many suggestions on the web but all to no avail. I thought that should be very trivial. Maybe a Lion bug?

If you just got your new MBP you have phone support from Apple (which is quite good) call them. 800-692-7753 tell the automated answerer "mail technical support" you'll have human quite quickly. Hope this helps.

I'm trying to reinstall Mavericks on used Macbook Pro. When I log in to my Apple ID, it says it was not the same ID used to purchase Mountain Lion. I need to change user/admin as a lot of the folders and apps are in Chinese!

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.
