PC FREE - what about large downloads?

I want to give an ipad to someone, to use " PC FREE ".
Will they be able to download large content directly over the iPad's 3G connection?  I currently can't download a TV show from iTunes to my iPhone over 3G, for example.
They don't have broadband, only dialup.
I guess they could get a MiFi modem over 3G so that the iPad could "be connected with WiFi", but would seem crazy since the iPad has 3G built in.

I didn't think about it until Dahveed brought it up, but basically, if you're worried about "large downloads", then not having broadband will be quite expensive.  AT&T & Verizon have data caps.  And a 10GB plan from Verizon will cost $80/mo.  Even the Mi-Fi from Verizon has a data cap, so a lot of "large downloads" will get you into trouble.  It's not the Wi-Fi on the iPad you need to worry about.  It's the fact that you're still connecting over cellular 3G.
The one current plan I could think of recommending is a Mi-Fi from Sprint.  Sprint's WiMax 4G is unlimited so a 4G Mi-Fi from Sprint, while still costing $60/mo, would avoid overage charges.  The catch is you must be in a 4G area, because you're capped to 5GB of Sprint data in 3G areas.  And that is just what Sprint is offering for now.  They just got the iPhone so who knows if their network can take the strain, thus perhaps Sprint's unlimited data may go away.  I'm told that Verizon's LTE 4G will be unlimited...for now.  If that is so, then a Verizon LTE Mi-Fi (if and when it's availalble) would do...for now.
Realistically, advise the person you're giving the iPad to that they must watch what they do on the iPad.  No streaming.  (No Netflix, no Pandora, etc.)  General web surfing is fine and occasional Youtube is okay.  But no full length movies (unless they're using Sprint on WiMax.)

  • HT4455 What about a download to reboot Safari?

I am running X.4.11 and safari seems to have problems with most https:// preferred URLs except it is OK with Google, no longer to trusted, Face-book,And some other sites usually not used.
Is this the nature of the beast, but it wasn't a problem years ago on my G3 tower unit. So why now?
    <Re-Titled by Host>

Yes, as in whipping the disc space, then re-loading the software to update any errors in the installed version. I've just done that very thing, and it would seem the message to the effect all Updates were current was in error since 4.1.3 installed, but now it does not like anything beginning with the forbidden URL http-s://, so it means editing the URL list, or making them a starred, preferred one as is there for ixquick.com my choice for non snooped browsing since Google has an odd attitude about what they choose to do with our information.
I've been doing this since 1957, btw. And looking over the operating system is what is always done on a refurbished computer. Some techs like to scrub the folder contents in order to sell you what was in the Apps and Utilities. Been there, but got it replaced along with the firing of the twit.

  • HT4946 in-app purchases are backed up but what about the apps themselves (purchased and free)?

While creating a back-up by via iTunes (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US), in-app purchases are backed up (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946) but what about the apps themselves (purchased and free)?
Are the apps backed up too or do they need to be purchased, downloaded and installed again?

You can transfer your purchases to computer iTunes.
Connect and select iPhone in iTunes under DEVICES, right click and choose Transfer Purchases from ...
BTW, you can alway re-download again for free if it's still available in the app store.

I bought Lightroom 3 and want to upgrade to Lightroom 5 for Windows 7.  Is the upgrade free and how do I go about the download?

You have to pay for major version upgrades, like LR 3 to LR 5.
You can purchase the upgrade from Adobe for 79 US Dollars from Products, make sure you have your Lightroom 3 serial number available (and maybe cheaper from other sellers)

  • HT201272 What about audio books?  my audio book didnt download the full book.  a file is missing.  how do I see that to download?

What about audio books?  my audio book didnt download the full book.  a file is missing.  how do I see that to download?

Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download. If it didn't download correctly then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that audiobook and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

  • Hi, i was just about to download aperture 3 but then saw that version 4 may be available very soon... if i download 3 will i get a free upgrade to 4 or am i better off waiting? many thanks

Hi, i was just about to download aperture 3 but then saw that version 4 may be available very soon... if i download 3 will i get a free upgrade to 4 or am i better off waiting? many thanks

Thanks very much for your help, this is exactly the information i was looking for.
The idea of the aperture 4 release came from the october keynote presentation where you can see the new 'mac pro' being used with a different looking aperture interface by a photographer, rumored to be a trial version of a4. i apreciate that it may never materialise but there is hope! i will wait for the release of the mac pro and see if version 4 comes at the same time.
Untill then i will continue to use photosphop elements for detailed work and start to use iphoto for more basic adjustents.
I also noticed on the app store reviews that a lot of people are having problems using aperture 3 since upgrading to Mavericks (which  am running). this has put me off buying the program at ths time.
Thanks again for your help, James.

  • I want to try elements 11.  Can you talk to me about the free trials.  I downloaded apps., but need help. Thanks

    Hi,
I spent the better part of this morning finding Adobe/Photoshop elements 11 tutorials.  I wanted to try changing faces on group pictures.  I downloaded what I thought would work.  Now I need help finding out if this "elements 11" is included with what I downloaded so that I may try to use this feature.  Please talk to me about this.

First of all, this is the Photoshop forum, not the Photoshop Elements forum:
    Photoshop Elements
Second, the version currently available from Adobe is Photoshop Elements 12.
What did you download, and where did you download it from?

  • HT1688 If I'm in Mexico and I'm skyping with someone in the US, will it go against my data plan or is it free? What about text messaging?

If I'm in Mexico and skyping with someone in the US, will it go against my data plan? What about text messaging?

Unless you are connected to an available wi-fi network when Skyping, when doing so via a carrier's cellular network goes against your data plan. The same when using any app that requires internet access.
SMS is exchanged over the same network as calls, so no data usage with SMS.
MMS is exchanged over the carrier's cellular data or internet network so MMS goes against your data plan.
The same when exchanging iMessages unless your are connected to an available wi-fi network when doing so.

  • What about COPYRIGHTS? got free stuff...

I installed a new version of iTunes on my PC today, then sinked my iPhone and the wierdest thing happened to me. I opened an iPod and noticed all my music got replaced with music I never bought, randon stuff like Rolling Stones, Rhiana, Quinn, Outcast and more, couple of hundreds of songs and a few full albums that I never purchised and never had there before. I looked in iTunes and all the music is gone, replaced with the same random music out of nowhere. All my movies, purchised from iTunes are gone too. Noone touched my computer, noone touched my iPhone, I tunes account has a right name and a purchase history only has stuff that I bought and nothing of this music that I have now. So, how did it got there and what about any copyrights for it? I am confused.

Thanks, that is a resonable guess. I got it figured out. I forgot to add that it was my work computer, and it appears that some of my coworkers got the same little surprice, so we're guessing our admin did something wierd. They (IT) are on vacation so we are waiting for confirmation. I just never saw anything like this before and didn't even know they can do that.

  • Can free online books be downloaded to memory of ipad2 so that book can be accessed when not within wi-fi range

can free online books be downloaded to memory of ipad2 so that book can be accessed when not within wi-fi range

It depends on what books you're referring to. All books from the iTunes Store are downloaded to your iPad and except for any special features the book may contain that requires an Internet connection will be readable without such a connection.
If you're talking about books from some other source, we'd need to know the source before we could offer opinions.
    Regards.

  • HT5071 Is it possible to call a locally installed ibook from a hyperlink? What about to a bookmark?

Is it possible to call a locally installed ibook from a hyperlink? What about to a bookmarked page?
    I have 2 questions..
    1. Can I send a link via email that when launched will open an ibook that has already been downloaded to the bookshelf?
    2. If question 1 is possible, can I take it a step further and call a bookmark, i.e. chapter 3.
Our company has it's own appstore and I want to send out links to sections of the ibooks using bookmarks or at the very least take them to the start of the ibook.
I don't need to give them a link to install the ibook as they already have it installed.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Chris.

That would be cool, but it's not possible. The ibook is not accessible by URL in the user's bookshelf.

My kids now each have an itouch, should we all have different apple ids even if I am paying for all itunes and app store purchases? what about icloud? I would like to share itunes and app purchases, but not necessarily photos...help please!

The recommended solution for most families is to share the same Apple ID for iTunes and App Store purchases, so you can share your purchases, but us different IDs for iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud.  With this arrangement, each person can automatically download purchases made on the shared ID (by turning this feature on in Settings>iTunes & App Stores), while keeping their FaceTime calls, text messages and iCloud data (including photo stream) separated.  There is no requirement that the ID you use for purchasing be the same as the ID you use for these other services.

  • Can I search email archive on iCloud server from iOS device, or can I only search what it has downloaded locally?

Can I search email archive on iCloud server from iOS device, or can I only search what it has downloaded locally?
I currently have an iPhone and iPad, and am soon changing over to a Mac. When that happen I'd like to try to see what I can migrate over from the Google ecosystem to the iCloud ecosystem.
    1) Currently I have the Gmail iOS app (a webapp container) that can search server-side of several years of email archive.  Can iCloud do this using the iOS native mail application?  Or is the search just limited to what the device has downloaded locally?
    2) Do I have to use a @me.com address for the full iCloud email sync to take place between server, Mac, and iOS devices?
Believe it or not I've read quite a bit about the iCloud services, but the answers to these questions were far from clear.  Many thanks for the help.

    2)  iCloud only syncs email between .me/.mac addresses.  For other accounts like google, you set up the account in the mail app and if they're IMAP accounts, you can sync between the google server and any devices you have defined that account on.
I'm not absolutely sure about 1) since I haven't had to search going back years - I use MailSteward for that on the mac.  On my iPhone/iPad, when I go into a mailbox and the emails are not immediately available, it downloads them.  I suspect for a search, you need the emails downloaded.
