PC Gamer published one review for MSI GS30 2M shadow with gaming dock

MSI’s GS30, with its Gaming Dock, is the first to actually deliver on the promise of using a normal desktop graphics card bolstering a thin ‘n’ light, non-gaming notebook.—Dave James
Highlights:
1.You can switch between thin ‘n’ light laptop to gaming desktop in a trice
2.The dock’s connection to the notebook is a full x16 lane PCIe 3.0 socket.
3.It’s a beefy quad-core, octo-thread processor of Intel Haswell ilk running between 2.8GHz and 3.5GHz
4.There’s also a huge 16GB of DDR3 memory inside that little package too
5.With the CPU and Iris Pro graphics it’s a powerful little thing in its own right.

  • Playtech took a look at the MSI GS30 Shadow with Gaming Dock

    Playtech, the MSI reseller in New Zealand took a look at the MSI GS30 Shadow with Gaming Dock.
    The overall impression was positive
    So.....another MSI notebook to consider .....
    my gosh....how difficult to make a purchase decision....
    Quotes
    "The GS30 was described as thin and light impressing them with its look and overall build quality. The CPU, 1080p antiglare display, RAM and storage were all high points in the tiny package.
    Playtech TV also loved the touchpad and keyboard on the GS30 Shadow making for easy use. The Gaming Dock was easy to use and using both the MSI GTX960 and MSI GTX980 cards to do benchmarks they were thoroughly impressed with the scores across the board.
    MSI Dragon Centre, SoundBlaster Cinema and the System Control software were all bonuses making for easy use, overall they felt the laptop was well built with a great screen, keyboard and touchpad. While the entire package was a cool, interesting idea which can be appealing for users who want a super portable notebook during the day and a high performance gaming desktop at home."

    Docking is a brilliant idea, but my boyfriend is gamer and an engineer, he is trying to look for independent laptop for its high performance. Does anyone know where can I find independent one from docking?

    GS30 Shadow and Gaming Dock internals
    The GS30 Shadow is a light, slim machine with a high-powered, high-voltage Intel Core i7 CPU and the usual stuff you find in an MSI Gaming notebook. One thing it does lack though, is a dedicated graphics card, instead it comes with a PCI-E 3.0 x16 connector and a sizeable dock, the Gaming Dock, in which you’ll be able to fit a full desktop graphics card and a few other goodies.
    To tell you more about the GS30 Shadow and the Gaming Dock, we’ve created a little video to walk you through the combo and what you can expect hardware-wise.

  • One suggestion for MSI

    May I suggest one motherboard for you to build if possible?
    Same design of MSI K8N Diamond Plus, 8 or more phases for CPU power, at least 2 IDE ports for 4 drives. 6 SATA Ports. 1 or 2 eSata ports. Nvidia Chipset 590. Keep all legacy components such parallel port, serial port and others similar to Diamond Plus. Passive Cooling of chipset. Ability to overclock. Ajustments for Memory, CPU, NB and SB voltages. Solid Capacitors. There won't be other to beat this.
    You can build for Intel and AMD processors! I wish I could find one kind of motherboard with this configuration.
    Thanks for reading.
    Original.

    No need for two dvd burners ,or multiple opticals  LOL  , no need for IDE drives with 8 SATA ports either.
    Want them for backup - make it even safer by putting them in a external HD box (sata or usb) , then they don't have to run all the time
    and you just neeeds to fire them up when you need to do backup/restore.
    IDE with it's limitation of flip flop transfer signalling between master/slave has become obsolete and is replaced by sata , we just
    have to accept that .
    The one IDE port is just left there in the NF5 chipsets are for optical IDE/ATAPI possibility -due to the lack of (poor) atapi support over sata controllers.
    All SATA controller ports (internal) supports e-sata , e-sata is just the cabling and connector and is obtained
    by installing a pci e-sata bracket .
    I know a NF590 motherboard that "almost" meets your requirements , except for the IDE controller , but
    mods doesn't like discussing other vendors boards here .

  • My Review for MSI Big Bang Xpower & Overclocked

    This will be the very 1st X58 big bang series of MSI and the 1st X58 MSI motherboard to have USB 3.0 and SATA 3 connections. Targets the enthusiast, hardcore gamers as well as overclockers. This board is already equipped with OC Genie buttons which was first implemented for MSI P55 series motherboards. YOu will also see later that instead of the old power, reset and Direct OC Easy Buttons. They are all now soft touch. PCI slots were also removed and been replaced by PCIEx16. There will be x6 PCIEx16 slots for this board ready for multi gpu setups. Military Class Components are also implemented into the board like Solid Caps, better chokes and server grade caps.
    Here you will see that the components around the socket area are well layout and very good in quality. These are Hi-C Cap on PWM and super ferrite chokes. Im sure this will provide the best efficient voltage to the processor during normal use and as well as during overclocking. See the two 8pin power connector for the Processor? This will provide more headroom for overclocking the processor especially for Gulftowns
    Forgot to mention other things like The board has V-Check points to measure actual voltage for CPU Vcore, VTT, DDR and IOH. Debug led indicator for easy isolation of boot up problems or mobo problems. Jumper for removing voltage wall limits and lastly the board includes an audio card for best audio experience.
    So next these are the rear ports
    Bundled Accessories. Sata cables, Sata power, IDE cable, USB 2.0 Bracket, eSATA Pack, M-Connectors, V-check Cables and a great gadget for overclocking the board on the fly "OC Dashboard" (shows also the current temps, and voltages)
    For some serious 2D Bench Results and overclock on air
    First run. 4.6ghz Spi32M
    Second run. 4.8ghz Spi32m

  • Hardware Review for MSI DR8-A2

    I found this review of the "not so enthusiastic" MSI DR8-A2 optical drive.
    http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/158/1
    Quote
    The main negative points: The most noticeable problem is the writing quality with all types of DVDR/RW discs, there are just too many discs that it has problems with. Beside this there are some small point worth mentioning; It’s not a good drive for backing up protected game discs as it do not even qualify as a “one sheep” writer. And it does not support bitsetting and writing/reading 99 minute CD-R discs.
    To sum it all up, this is the best we could say: “The DVDR/RW writing quality needs improvements before this drive becomes a good choice.”

    That review is ancient:

  • New PSU for MSI P67S-C43 (B3) with new graphics card.

    Good morning!
    I'm in the market for a new PSU for my system (specs in signature). I think the current PSU I have would be sufficient for the graphics card I'm looking at getting,  GeForce GTX 680 FTW+ (EVGA 04G-P4-3687-KR), however, I'd like to go modular. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!
    like_a_god

    A GTX680 system pulls less exactly same power like the same system with GTX260 (both 38A minimum without oc). So in terms of power there is no need for psu upgrade as the TX650 could handle a GTX680 with ease. Considering an oc card it might be 40A required minimum.
    None the less this is a MSI forum so next time please don't ask for psu upgrades for an EVGA card. Better get an MSI card instead like N680GTX Lightning or N680GTX Twin Frozr 4GD5/OC (if you need 4GB).
    If you want to upgarde the psu just because of it being modular then go for an 850w psu to have a noticeable power upgrade also. The HX850 is then the better choice. If you want a fully modular unit it would take AX850 instead.

  • Help! coloring background one row for 3 seconds in JTable with SwingTimer

    Hi, I am struggling with this for the past three days but cannot come up with a solution.
    I have a JTable and when i insert a new Row, i want to give that row a backgroundcolor for 3 seconds/ or let it blink for 3 seconds and then let it return to its original background color. While the current row is yellow, i want to insert a new row which also would be yellow for 3 seconds. The previous row would return white earlier than the row after, because that row is inserted earlier.
    the problem is, that when i add a new row while the current row is yellow, the new row has the timer of the previous row, which means that the last row inserted will stay yellow for a shirter time, which i do not want.
    i want a 3 second bgcolor for everyrow inserted. how can i achieve this ?
    My code:
    startBlinking() is called when a new row is being added to the JTable
    public void startBlinking() throws InterruptedException{
    if (timer.isRunning()){
    timer.setInitialDelay(2);
    timer.start();
    ----------------------- in another class:
    //attributes
    Action updateCursorAction = getAction();
    Timer timer = new Timer(3000, updateCursorAction);
    public Action getAction(){
    updateCursorAction = new AbstractAction() {
    boolean shouldDraw = false;
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
    if (shouldDraw =! shouldDraw) {
    blinkingYellow();
    } else{
    blinkingWhite();
    timer.stop();
    return updateCursorAction;
    public void blinkingWhite(){
    receiverdata_Table.setRowSelectionInterval(0, 0);
    receiverdata_Table.setSelectionBackground(Color.white);
    public void blinkingYellow(){
    receiverdata_Table.setRowSelectionInterval(0, 0);
    receiverdata_Table.setSelectionBackground(Color.YELLOW);
    }

    Cant resist to point out the ease of doing something like this in Swingx <g>
    Basically, the way to go is
    - install a Highlighter with the visual property/ies you want to use for the highlighting effect
    - update its HighlightPredicate (aka: condition for applying the property) as appropriate
    Below is a code snippet (as usual runnable as-is in the context of SwingX test support). The candy is, that the exact same highlighting code is re-usable in JXList, JXTree and (probably, should check) JXComboBox
    Enjoy

  • MSI GS30 Shadow & Gaming Dock

    GS30 Shadow - The Gaming Dock
    The GS30 Shadow was just launched at CES, and already there are questions going around, mainly related to the Gaming Dock. For those of you still unfamiliar with the GS30 Shadow, it's a slim 13.3” notebook with a high-end Core i7 CPU with Iris Pro graphics, Super RAID with a bunch of SSDs – with no real gaming capabilities of its own.
    The Gaming Dock though, changes all this. You simply dock the notebook into it and through magic (a PCI-E 3.0 x16 connector), you can hook up any desktop graphics to your GS30. The dock holds said PCI-E connector, a bunch of USB ports, a Killer LAN port, audio jacks, a 3.5” HDD as well as speakers in the front panel. The idea is that you have everything plugged in at home (including external monitor(s), keyboard and mouse) and simply pop in the GS30 when you get back home from work or school.
    Obviously there are technical limitations as well, that we want to highlight. You can't use the built-in monitor on the GS30, because all PCI-E signals are being sent to the gaming dock when plugged in. This also extends to the keyboard, touchpad and speakers, meaning you must have these separately on your desk. It's sort of the point of the Gaming Dock, using the keyboard on top of the dock would most likely be uncomfortable, but we still want to make it clear.
    All in all, we're excited to have launched the GS30 Shadow with it's full-bandwidth Gaming Dock, as it fuses full-powered desktop graphics where you want it (at home) with a properly mobile notebook for the road.

    Now the official youtube channel is offering an introducing video
    let's check it out!
