  • IMac purchased at garage sale help. Gets stuck at "Login Window Starting."

    Hi all,
I recently purchased an iMac at a barn sale, and it turns on and everything, but then gets stuck at "Login Window starting" screen (http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt135/gpd2paul4/IMG_0251.jpg). When Goggling this problem, I see that I am not alone in thee problem, but I am alone in the fact that I don't even know what model it is (I think G3, but not sure), let alone have the original CDs or paperwork. I have tried holding 'shift' right after the startup chime to start up in safe mode, but it still gets stuck at "Login Window starting." I have attached a few pictures of the computer to help you veteran Mac users identify it, which might help you help me. Any help is appreciated. (Step-by-step instructions are best, I am good at using a Mac, but this is getting pretty technical.)
    Thanks!!!

Try holding down the shift key when powering on. This will skip a few programs from loading.
Hold down the shift key when booting into Mac OS X. this will check your file structure and do a repair. This will also leave off some files from being used.

Try holding down the option key when powering on. This will bring up the startup manager. Perhaps 9 is installed. Click on icon then click on right arrow.

You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
    What is firmware?
The firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine. It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS. It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1 or later version of Mac OS Classic.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with lot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions."
You can download the Mac OS 9 updates from the Apple site.

There is no need to partition. You can save hard drive space by doing a custom install. Leave out the print drivers you do not need and the languages you do not need. Doing so you will need about three gigabytes of space.
You need to get into single use mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command-s key then powering on your machine. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar
When you are in single user mode, you are in Unix. you can try looking in the log files to see if you can find anything.
To see the current boot log you use the dmsg command.
    dmsg
    startup information is in /var/log/system.log
to display the last 500 lines use the tail command.
    tail -n 500 /var/log/system.log | more
For these commands you will need to gain write access to your startup disk. There are some comments at the end of the startup process that list the needed commands.
    mac $ ls -lF ~/zztemp.txt
ls: /Users/mac/zztemp.txt: No such file or directory
    mac $ tail -n 500 /var/log/system.log | cat > ~/zztemp.txt
    mac $ nano ~/zztemp.txt
    mac $
I assume the message contained /Library/Logs/CrashReporter. Do a change directory:
    cd /Library/Logs/CrashReporter
    mac $ pwd
    /Library/Logs/CrashReporter
    mac $ ls

  • Cannot install Windows 7 Pro; gets stuck on "Starting Windows" screen

I have read dozens of posts on this topic but none has helped yet.
My system has Windows 8 with UEFI. I want to install Windows 7 Pro on another partition. I have turned off Secure Boot in the UEFI/BIOS. When I try to install Windows 7 Pro from a DVD it shows "windows is loading files" and then gets stuck on "Starting Windows"
for ever. This happens even when no USB peripherals are attached.
I have already wasted many days on this. I hope someone can help.
    Thanks!

    Hi friends of the internet
I have been reading several forums regarding the issue of installing windows 7 (64 bit) to a computer that have had windows 8 installed previously or just a GPT formatted disk.
    My Case:
Windows version installed: Windows 7 Professional N with Service Pack 1 (x64) or Windows 7 Professional (x64)
    Computer used: Samsung laptop
    Model Code: NP53U4C-A02SE
    See the specks here:
    http://www.samsung.com/dk/consumer/computer-peripherals/notebook/notebook/NP535U4C-A02SE-spec
Create a USB install disk that not freezes at ”starting windows” screen:
First I followed this great guide (Thanks Daniel):
    http://
    hodgin.ca/2012/10/02/creating-a-uefibios-windows-7-usb-and-installing-to-gpt-partitions/
    STOP AFTER STEP 13!
    1. Open a command line in administrator mode
    2. run DISKPART
    3. type LIST DISK
    4. Look for the disk number that represents your USB drive
    5. type SELECT DISK # where # represents the number of your USB drive. Get this right or you will wipe a different drive out.
    6. type CLEAN
    7. type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
    8. type SELECT PARTITION 1
    9. type ACTIVE
    10. type FORMAT fs=fat32 quick
    11. type assign
    12. The drive should now be formatted and marked as active and fat32. Do not format the drive as NTFS or you will only be able to boot into the installer in BIOS mode.
    13. Now you will need to copy the contents of the windows 7 install dvd to the USB with a regular copy paste from windows explorer.
Here comes a very weird hack... I do not know why it works, but I think it is all about flash drive data structure. I did these steps on a win 7 prof. computer.
    (Let’s assume it’s drive E:)
Make a copy of your e:\efi\microsoft folder to e.g. your desktop.
    Delete the e:\efi folder
Copy the \efi folder from a windows 8 installation disk (I used Windows 8 (x64) Professional) to the e:\efi folder. Sorry I cannot provide this for you.
Here comes the weird part. Then delete e:\efi\microsoft you just copied from the win 8 installation disk.
Copy the \microsoft folder form the desktop to e:\efi\microsoft
Resume the guide from step 18.:
    http://
    hodgin.ca/2012/10/02/creating-a-uefibios-windows-7-usb-and-installing-to-gpt-partitions/
    18. Insert the USB in the machine and turn it on and boot into the UEFI/BIOS loader and check for boot options. On the ASUS Zenbook it detected two boot options on the USB drive. One was UEFI and one was regular BIOS. I made the
UEFI option the first choice and restarted the machine.
    My bios setup was:
    Secure Boot = Disable
OS Mode Selection = CSM and UEFI OS
Boot Device Priority = I made the UEFI option the first choice and restarted the machine.
    The installation should start normal.
    E.g. See this guide:
    www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/186875-uefi-unified-extensible-firmware-interface-install-windows-7-a.html
    What I did was:
    Select custom installation (Advanced).
    Click Drive options (Advanced).
Delete all partitions (this might not be needed). When I did not delete all partitions I was asked every time after the install, during start up by the windows boot manager to select ether win 8 or win 7.
Click new (DO NOT make Changes in the size of the disk), apply, see NOTE!
Edit the Primary partition as you want it e.g. divide it to more partitions.
Select the one you will install windows on and do a normal install.
I do not make changes in the Bios after install. The Boot priority is automatic set to “Windows boot manager”. If I change the boot mode back to OS Mode Selection = UEFI OS, the computer will freeze at the “starting windows” screen again.
All this worked for me, good luck. There might be more to it, but this is a start.
By the way, the start up time for a MBT install was 37 s. And for the GPT it was 49 s.
Remember if we stand on each other’s shoulders we will reach higher
    J.
NOTE: Here the installation program should create three partitions automatically!
Partition 1 - System - The EFI System partition that contains the NTLDR, HAL, Boot.txt, and other files that are needed to boot the system, such as drivers.
Partition 2 - MSR - The Microsoft Reserved (MSR) partition that reserves space on each disk drive for subsequent use by operating system software.
Partition 3 - Primary - Where Windows is to be installed to.
If this isn’t the cast you are not installing in UEIF mode. To check for this (thanks again Daniel):
If you need to find out if you have booted into BIOS mode or UEFI mode when the installer starts you can press SHIFT+F10 when the welcome installer shows up to open a cmd prompt. from here you will likely be at X:\Sources. Type cd .. to
go back a dir and move into \Windows\Panther\
    Then type notepad setupact.log
Within this file do a ctrl+f and search for
        Callback_BootEnvironmentDetect: Detected boot environment:
It should either say BIOS or UEFI.
To check if your disk is in the GPT format.
    Open the command prompt.
    Type: DISKPART
    Type: List Disk
See for the star (*) in the GPT column

  • PXE OS Deployment gets stuck at Initializing Windows PE "Windows is starting up..." SCCM 2012 R2

When trying to deploy OS using PXE the client machine gets to the window where it shows "Initializing Windows PE" and "Windows is starting up..."  However it never gets past this point.  I've left it overnight hoping it would
eventually get past this but no luck.  Not sure which log file I should be looking at for further troubleshooting.  Thank You

I've downloaded the drivers for the Intel E1000 NIC that the vm is using and created the driver package and added it to the x86 boot image.  VM still gets stuck at Initialinzing Windows PE.  Command support is enabled on the boot image
and I can see the SMSTS log file is there but I have no way of accessing it or copying it somewhere to view it.
WinPE has cmtrace By default, so hit F8, type cmtrace and open smsts.log from C:\Windows\Temp with it. Cmtrace is much-much better than notepad!
E1000 is a good choice for NIC in VMware, done that myself. Another common reason could be disk driver, you may want to try it By chaninging defauls scsi to IDE inside that VM.

Try connecting it to your iTunes library in recovery mode using the instructions in this Apple support document.

  • My 4th gen Ipod nano keeps getting stuck on the apple logo.

My 4th gen Ipod Nano keeps getting stuck on the Apple logo screen, this happens everytime I plug it in to charge. I plug it in, an apple logo comes up, and it stays like that the entire time its plugged in. To get it to unfreeze, i have to press random buttons and unplug and re plug in earbuds. After 20-25min of doing this it unfreezes and I come to find it has gotten little to no charge after being plugged in for hours at a time. Any one else have this problem, and if so what do you do?

This can be a corrupted software/firmware on your iPod touch. If the recovery mode you did was not forced, then try to force it into recovery mode. This is how:
    1. Force it to shut down (note: this sort of shut down should not be preformed unless you are in a situation like this because it is a hardware shutdown and will not attempt to unload software, save unsaved files, safely stop system processes, etc.) to do this, hold down the power/sleep button and home button for about 7 or 10 secs. Also I might be incorrect but I heard that you can just hold down the sleep and home button until the screen goes blank and then immediately let go.
    2. Have iTunes running. Hold down the home button and plug the USB cable that came with your iPod into it. Keep on holding on the home button until a picture of a USB cable going into the iTunes logo appears. You are now in a forced recovery mode. (In case your not so tech-savvy forced recovery is the same as a normal recovery mode that an iPod might do if it knows an update or restore failed.)
    3. iTunes should have shown a pop-up message about it found a iPod in recovery mode. Click OK, click your iPod from the sidebar and click restore. The iPod will show the apple logo for a while and iTunes will say "preparing iPod for restore" and then "waiting for iPod" this was the longest part of updates for me.
    4. iPod will reboot when restore is completed. When I update my iPod it one time showed the apple logo for one whole sync until it showed the slide to unlock screen, so do not worry. P.S if that does not work do a DFU mode restore ( I've been told DFU mode stands for device firmware update mode) I'm running out of room, so google it. Hope this helped ;)

  • My New iPod gets stuck on the Apple logo screen.

I got a new ipod but there is one problem with it. For hours at a time it gets stuck on the apple logo screen. In this state it does not connect to my computer. I cannot get it to play music because everytime I manage to get it started up the apple logo screen pops up and shuts it down again.
Also, on the occasions where my computer DOES recognize my iPod, my iPod says it has about 1 GB of "other files" and about 1 gb of "audio files". I understand the audio but I don't remember putting anything onto my iPod that wasn't audio. What are the "other files" and how do I remove them?

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware etc. or files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

Sorry, I'm here, but I am at work.
If you do not have a backup and iTunes will not let you backup now, unfortunately you will lose everything.
I'm not sure that I understand what you saying about iTunes not nothing the device being plugged in, but I iTunes does not see the device that is one of the reasons that you need to use recovery mode.
If you are running iTunes 11 and you cannot see the iPad under the devices heading because you can't see the sidebar - go to View>Show Sidebar at the top of the screen in iTunes.

    Hi.
My ipod touch 5 is getting stuck on startup and i cannot even access the recovery mode.
what should i do to resolve this problem?

    Try what you missed here:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Tried almost everything, iMac (2008) still stuck at startup (Apple logo)

My iMac from 2008, currently running 10.6 but was originally a 10.5, has been stuck on the white screen + Apple logo with no spinning beach ball.
There were no troubles before this, I just turned it on one morning to it like this.
I've practically tried everything to no avail...
Safe boot: goes back to Apple logo
Option key: the HD is shown, but goes back to Apple screen when clicked
NVRAM/PRAM reset: did nothing but make the volume and screen brightness back to default
Verbose mode: gets stuck on "Executing fsck_hfs..." and doesn't proceed whatsoever, even after hours of it being on
Single User mode: same as Verbose mode. Just stuck, never proceeding.
Sometimes it goes on a restart loop until I stop it with a NVRAM/PRAM reset.
Sometimes it beeps 2 times, then goes on to 3 beeps until turned off (RAM problems?) but not all the time.
I'm thinking I should just do a complete and clean reinstall of the OS to see if it'll help...but my optical drive hasn't been working for a while now, so I can't just stick in the CD...
Is it worth it to go and buy an external CD/DVD reader and try to do a clean reinstall from that? Is that even possible?
Have an idea on what might be causing this? RAM? Corrupted files??
Should I suck it up and go to the Apple store? (Which I'm trying to avoid, as an iMac is heavy and I have no car)
Any help will be grately appreciated!
    Thanks for reading.

    I fixed it!
I thought I would post what I did in case anyone else in the future has the same problems as me.
I went out and got an external CD/DVD drive and plugged it in with the first install disc that came with my Mac. (The grey CDs with 10.5, not the 10.6 upgrade DVD)
Pressing C on startup didn't work, so I pressed D instead and got the Apple Hardware Test. After testing, I got a 4MEM error, which means it was the RAM.
Tested one RAM at a time, and it seems like one of them had stopped working. I also tested the good RAM in both slots in case it was the slots that were erroring, and not the sticks.
Then, I booted up my Mac again with the good stick of RAM, pressed C, and went into Disk Utility. There, I verified and repaired the disk (there were some errors there too, but it fixed it up).
I rebooting the Mac with one stick of RAM, and it started with no problem!
But because I'm only running on 1GB, things are a bit sluggish, so I'm going to use this opportunity to upgrade my RAM. All is right in the world again.

  • X1 Carbon gets stuck at "Loading Windows" screen

About 90% of thetime I try to boot up my laptop, it gets stuck at the "Loading Windows" screen.  I have waited for 10+ minutes and nothing.  Other time, it will boot up fine, but that seems to be a rarity.  I have tried the startup repair tool and even completely reformatted the hard drive and did a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit and the problem persists.
Is this definitely a hardware problem or is it possible that it is somehow software related even though I reformatted and did a fresh install?
