PC hangs every time I connect a device to a USB port

Hi,
I have a Pavilion t640.it running Windows XP SP3. Windows drivers are updated (I downloaded them from the HP site) and I also tried to update the BIOS after I experienced the following problem, but with no success.
I often need to connect smartphones to my PC and work on them, after installing their drivers. I had issues lately and I had to reinstall their drivers multiple times. Today, when I connected a smartphone to my PC via USB, Windows displayed a message saying that the voltage on the USB port was too high. It displayed the same message a couple of times and I could only hard reset the PC. After that, the PC freezes every time I connect any smartphone to my PC to any USB port. Windows makes no sound to show it detects the USB device, it just freezes. I tried uninstalling and installing device drivers but with no success.
Is there a solution, should I reinstall Windows from scratch (I hope not) or is it a hardware problem (worse still)?
Thanks!

Small update: only the front USB  ports seem to have problems. I could connect my device to one back port and it worked.
Then I removed USB ports from Device Manager and reinstalled them and displayed again the message about over current on 2 USB ports...

  • Why does my iTunes hang every time when using automatic device detect?

Why does my iTunes hang every time that I connect either of my devices (iTouch-4th Gen, iPod Nano-5th Gen), to my Win 7 (64-bit) PC desktop?  By the way, this does not happen if I open iTunes first, and then connect the device.  So my workaround was to simply uncheck the checkbox that allows iTunes to start automatically upon device connection.  This doesn't fix the problem, but it allows me to synch my device, but it would be nice to be able to have the autodetect work properly, so that iTunes would start normally without locking up on me and freezing. That's what I mean by 'hanging'.  My whole computer doesn't freeze--only iTunes.

    Hello E
Start with finding the path where the songs are on your PC by right clicking the songs that are missing in iTunes and click Get Info. You should get a window that pops up and in the Summary tab; the path will be there. Then navigate to where it was and see if the files exist. Other than that you can try to search your computer to find those files. Checkout the articles below for tips on finding the missing music, also if some of the tracks are downloaded from the iTunes Store you can download the tracks again by deleting the missing tracks from iTunes and then navigating to the purchases section in the iTunes Store to download them again.

  • Itunes hangs every time i connect iphone3G on every computer i plug it into

    Hi all
I am having a problem...itunes hangs literally every time i connect iphone3G on every computer i plug it into.. I use windows XP and have even just bought a brand new laptop, installed itunes and it does the same on that. It indicates to me that the lead may be faulty (tried different lead and same issue) or there's something in the phone OS that tries to start but doesn't when plugged in ...
When i do ctrl alt del and crash out of itunes the iphone happily charges itself so its not the USB ports...oh and i have left it running for hours so it's not a time issue...
I am at my wits end.

I have not seen a blue screen. iTunes simply hangs, forever, until I crash it.
I have tried on multiple different computers and it happens on all of them. ItUnes runs fine but when i try to connect it iTunes hangs. I have also tried plugging it in before and after iTunes kicks in but the result is the same.
This of course means that I cannot update the OS or download/organise music...eeek

  • ITunes 10.6 crashes every time I connect a device to sync

I just upgraded to iTunes 10.6 in a normal mac software update yesterday.
Now I cannot sync any of my devices. 2 iPhone 4Ss and 1 iPad 1st gen.
Whenever I connect a device to sync, iTunes 'crashes unexpectedly'
I had to turn of wifi on the iPhone because wifi syncing caused the itunes to crash. I noticed my streaming music kept quitting and figured out it was the syncing that caused the 'unexpected quit's.
Music not playing is a minor inconvenience, but not syncing is a major problem in my household; where we share lots of info via sync. Can anyone help me with this bug?
I did notice there was an iOS 5.1 upgrade available for all my devices, and was able to install it on iPhone 1 and the iPad, but I cannot upgrade my wife's iPhone because I need to free up some space on it which requires, you guessed it, attaching it to my mac to access sync preferences.
    Any suggestions?

After much frustration, including trying to use time machine to get my old library back (doesnt work), I finally found a site that shows how to restore iTunes 10.5.3.  These instructions are pretty clear and easy to follow, but better yet, they work. http://untetheredjb.com/fix-itunes-10-6-crashing-on-mac-osx-leopard-and-lion. Very happy to have my devices synced again.  I dont think I'm going to do another iTunes upgrade for a while after this nightmare.

  • I am unable to set up my new Time Capsule with my BT Home Hub - every time i connect the ethernet cable from Wan port to Home Hub, the internet signal drops

    Hi there -
I've just purchased a new Time Capsule, and would like to set up a small home network with my Laptop, iMac and wireless printer. I'm following the first steps, but as soon as I connect an ethernet cable between the WAN port of the TC and the ethernet port of the HH, my BT internet connection drops out and I have to restart the HH. Upon which point it drops out again. The airport utility can see my TC, and gets as far as me typing in the new network name and setting up a password, but then it can't quite get through to the next stage. All the time it's just flashing amber.
    Please help!

Setup the TC in bridge mode before you cannot it to the HH.
Simply do the setup fully in isolation. And do it by ethernet.
Setup wireless to create a wireless network.
You can use either same SSID =Wireless name as the HH .. same security same password.
Or use a different name and setup.. totally up to you.
Update the TC and then plug it into the HH by ethernet.

  • Every time I connect my Droid Maxx to my computer, it tries to install a Verizon Software Updater.  I don't want this!  How do I disable it?

Topic says it all.  I don't want more junk on my Win7 computer.  I don't want more junk running in the background.  I'm not an idiot.  I can decide for myself whether I want to upgrade my system or not.  This installer crap is unacceptable.  There must be a way to disable it - every - time - I connect my device to my computer for charge & storage.

Thank you so much.  I'm so new to all this.  This answered my question.

  • E90: USB errors every time I connect

    Hi all,
Every time I connect my E90 to the USB cable I get the following error:
"Nokia E90 Communicator USB Modem. The required section was not found in the INF."
This prevents the E90 from "installing" properly, which is why Windoze goes through the same pantomime every time. It finishes with a message saying there may be a problem with my hardware and it may not work properly. It seems to work fine (both via PC Suite and direct file transfer), but it would be nice to get rid of the error.
    There is a second error:
"CDC Communications Interface. A service installation section in this INF is invalid."
This one does not come up every time, but did come up the first time, and again after I upgraded the phone software (which I guess re-sets it to the "first" time).
Any help solving either of these would be appreciated. Do I just need a corrected INF file from somewhere?
    Thanks,
    CC

Autostart/autoplay options are defined in your operating system. Richt-click the drive letter/ volume name and change them accordingly. On Windows there's alsop a system control panel for that.

  • I just bought a new Iphone and when I connected it to itunes and I downloaded the backup from my last device, now I can't pass this step and every time I connect it to itunes is the same thing.

I just bought a new Iphone and when I connected it to itunes and I downloaded the backup from my last device, now I can't pass this step and every time I connect it to itunes is the same thing. And I can't download any app because problems with my account regarding the credit card but the information is correct and it says it is not!!!

You'll have to contact iTunes store support regarding your credit card information problem: http://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html.  I'm not clear on what you're saying about your backup.  Are you saying that when you connect to iTunes it's asking you to restore from backup even though you already have?

  • How to disable the message that pops up every time i connect my iphone "photos in the camera roll of iphone cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode"?

Wrongly posted in iPhoto forum, should probably be posted here instead.
I want to remove the message that pops up every time i connect my IPhone that says: "Photos in the Camera Roll of "Name" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode.".
This computer is not one that I want to import photos to (or sync with the iPhone), so this message is just very annoying, and it pops up all the time. I cannot find a way to disable this message. It is constantly appearing. No application is launching, I have turned off the iPhoto launch in the Image Capture app as well as in iPhoto. Thanks in advance if anyone has any information about this.

Because your computer sees your phone, as it would see any digital camera, as long as you have photos in your camera role. Since you state you don't sync with this computer & have a passcode on your phone, that's why you get that message. The only way to prevent that message is either start syncing with this computer; remove the photos from your camera roll prior to connecting; or first turn off your passcode before you connect. Either that, or you live with it.
You shouldn't be storing photos in your camera roll anyway. iPhone camera roll is not designed for photo storage. You should be regularly importing them.

  • I have to delete all Apple drivers from Windows 7 every time I connect via USB

    Hi,
Every time I connect to itunes via USB cable on my Windows & Laptop, the iphone DOE'S NOT SHOW UP IN MY COMPUTER. It shows up in iTunes and syncs ok, but I cannot access my photos from the phone in 'My Computer' !
As a consequence, I have to uninstal both the MTU driver (or Apple iPhone driver) from "Portable Devices" and the "Apple MObile Device USB Driver" from the USB Contollers tan from within "Device Manager". I then immediately scan the comuter for changes and everything works again and my iphone is listed in "my Computer" again. Eveything is fully functional at this stage.
HOWEVER, as soon as take the phone off the |USB cable and try to reconnect the iphone again to the PC, the very same thing happens again and I have to go through ther same procedure all over again!
I have never had these problems before updating my iphone and itunes the last few times, not sure exctly when the problem started, but it was at least a couple of updates ago!
Another thing I noticed since the one from last ios update for the iphone 4, is that my phone mutes itself at random times and I have to restart or respring the device to get sound back!
Not related to the previous problem, but I thought i'd mention it
Since the last ios update a few days ago, it hasn't muted itselld yet but as I have not read anywhere anout anyone experiencing the same problem, I am not too hopeful that it has been fixed!
If anyone can help with a more permanent solution to the USB problem, I would be very grateful.
By the way, I have changed USB cables, restarted iphone and laptop several times, completely removed iteuns and reinstalled it as per the instructions on the itunes site, made ure everything is updated to the very latetest firmware and software, in short, I have tried EVERYTHING, so please don't state the obvious in your replies, I have pretty much tried everything before coming onto this forum.
    Many thanks in advance,

Sorry, just to confirm, I DID NOT ACTUALLY ANSWER MY OWN QUESTION!
I replied to the previous message from my iphone and I managed to hit the link to "This has answered my question" by accident!
I AM STILL LOOKING FOR A RESOLUTION TO MY ORIGINAL PROBLEM. CAN SOMEONE ALSO NIW TELL ME HOW TO GET RID OF THE GREEN TEXT TGAT SAYS TGAT MY QUESTION IS ANSWERED? That is a pain! It should at least ask you to confirm that your question is actually answered and you didn't hit it by mistake, like I did!

  • Restart computer every time I connect ipod

I'm having a problem with my 30GB 5G ipod. Every time I connect it to my MacBook running Leopard it tells me that I need to restart my computer. This is an ipod that I've been using for quite a while and I've never had this problem before (it just started happening within the last day). I should also mention that I have a 2G Touch and an iphone 3G and I'm not having this problem with either one of those devices. Any idea what could be causing this and how I can fix it?
