PC internet speed is faster than my Macs...?

Macbook: 512 Ram, 2 ghz dual core
PC notebook: 512 Ram, AMD Turon 64 mobile processor (no idea what the speed is, but it was baught 16 months ago, so it can't be THAT fast)
I have some citywide wi-fi service, where one of the access points is 10 yards away from my apartment. I have tried the Mac and PC both in the same place.
For some reason, the internet on my Mac is 10 times slower than it is on my PC, I am using firefox on both of them. I ran the bandwidth tests at Cnet and a few other places, and my Mac gets around 85 kbs while the PC gets 890 kbs. That is a huge gap and leads me to believe that something is wrong here...
Does anybody have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

just a hunch...
make sure both platforms report speed using the same units....
1 kBps = 8 kbps (small b = bits, capital B = bytes)
if it is no that, then I dont know.

  • PowerMac faster than intel Mac when running video programs?

Hello everyone! Having a question now so wonder if any of you have the same experience?
Recently i have many video works to do. I have a powerbook, which is the lasted 17inch powerbook and an intel imac (early 2008, 2.66GHz). I run the same version of finalcut pro and compressor. But thing become very strange, which is that when i run compressor to make final video files, my powerbook is much faster (about 2 times faster) than intel iMac. When i run XDCAM program to import video clips to finalcut from Sony XDCAM blueray reader, powerbook is also much more faster than intel iMac, and which is about 10time more faster than intel iMac. So it become very strange. I list my configurations below, and any of you can help me to solve the 'problem' or explain the strange fenominal.
Maybe theres anything wrong with software configurations, any one can also help me with that?
    Thank you very much!

Of course it depends on what you're doing and how well you know how to use available resources... the general rule for Logic is:
    >>>Fastest machine with the most RAM you can afford.<<<
That said, someone who knows what they're doing can get an amazing amount of effects and virtual instruments on an old PPC G5 computer running Logic 8.
So, while fast machines will allow more plugins/VI with less overloads... knowing what you're doing will take you further so that the difference between machines would not make a difference in the music.

  • My Internet speed is slower than it should be.

My family has had verizon high speed internet for years but for some reason I decided to question the speed that we were getting. I went to the verzion website to look at the plans and we should be getting 1 Mbps download and 384 Kbps, but when I went to Speedtest.net to check out what speeds we were getting. I ran the speed test about 10 times and the results are about the same:
DOWNLOAD - 0.09 Megabytes per second
UPLOAD -        16.4 Kilobytes per second
What I want to know is why are the speeds not higher? Im thinking that verizon forgot to update our speed since the time when we first got it, about 4 or 5 years ago!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

A Verizon Tech support employee helped solve the issue. Apparrently we still had the same plan when we started and were only getting 768 kbps download and were paying like $21 dollar for it. So we are going to upgrade and get the starter plan and pay $20 a month and get 1 MB download. I might even get the 3 MB download plan.

  • Writing Speed Much Faster than Transcoding Speed

    Hello,
I'm creating an image for future DVD burning and it is taking quite a while for my 11 minute film to go through this process.  (it's been over 30 minutes so far, and as you can see from the screen shot below, I've got a ways to go!!)
I've noticed that the "transcoding" seems to be going  lot slower than the "writing", per the screen shot below.
    Is this typical?
    Thanks!  Matt

Thanks Stan, pretty nice mac pro transcoding from h.264... it looks like i did not have all my little ducks in a perfect row in my original source file.... testing that hypothesis now, it think that is the likely culprit.
    thanks for helping!

  • As Soon As Any Effect Is Applied On The Video Or Sequence The Video Playing Speed Gets Faster Than Normal And Red Screen Also Starts Appearing In Between The Video. Tried Changing The Speed And Duration But Its Not Working.Help Required ASAP.

The Issue Is Majorly Caused When Any Effect Is Applied On The Video And Rendered The Issue Occurs. And By Closing The Application And Restarting The Application Its Works Fine Again But As Soon As The Effects Are Applied Same Problem Occurs Recursively.

What is the format of the material you are editing, is it variable frame rate?

  • Why is my internet speed is fast, but webpages (facebook, google search) load slowly.

This is a persisting problem. Restarting/reinstalling firefox seems to fix it for a short time but it always comes back. The same problem happens in chrome and firefox on my desktop but not on my laptop or smart phone. I've tried switching anti virus software and servers but neither helped. Other Options?

  • Mac faster than PC's?

    Hi everybody.
I already have a iMac 21,5" but i'm considering to buy the next Macbook Apple publish.
I hope they make a Macbook Pro inside a Air body, but thats not what this threat is about.
I often her that people say that if a Mac and a PC had the same specs, the Mac would still be faster?
That is also my experience, but why is that? I thougt that a PC that had better specs would run faster than a Mac?
Is specifications all that matters when you buy a computer?
Of course it's individually what you like best when it comes to software, but do the software make you computer run faster?
I think my Mac run a lot faster than my PC, and they have someway the same specs.
That was a lot of questions

Mac's can be faster than PC's and PC's can be faster than Mac's.
It all depends upon the processors, graphics capability and other factors, age of each machine, data on the  drive, etc.
If you put Windows and OS X on the very same type hardware, freshly installed on each hard drive, everything matches. Likely OS X would be a hair slower than Windows.
It's because OS X renders the UI with a finer degree of detail.
However when it comes to hardware, PC's outstrip Mac's in that department not mainly in the processors, which they both share the same Intel ones (Mac's sometimes gets theirs before PC users) but rather the video card upgrade choices and tweaking ability Windows towers users enjoy and Mac owners do not.
    http://www.cbscores.com/index.php?sort=ogl&order=desc
So if your considering a 3D gaming machine, your choices are simply a Win 7 tower.
Generic PC's also have another advantage, one can replace Windows with the lighter Linux, I've done that with HP XP netbooks that were going for a song, slapped Linux on them and they make great portable use machines for the basics. I even use a UI that looks like OS X so I feel at home.

  • Why is my second computer's (wireless) internet speed slower than my 'base' computer's (non-wireless)?

My son has a Macbook that  he uses in another room of our house. The router is at my desk, and is wired to my desktop MacMini. Why should his internet speed be slower than mine? Is there a remedy such as switching providers or routers?

According to the manual for the router you said you have, the maximum supported speed is 22 Mbps for 802.11b and 54Mbps for 802.11b/g - since that MacBook supports 802.11a/b/g/n, 54Mbps is the best case scenario if it's negotiating an "g" connection or 22Mbps if it gets a "b" type connection. So what is your internet connection speed? And that 22/54Mbps is best case - depends on how many wall and other obstructions it goes thru by the time it gets to his MacBook.
If he holds down the Option key and clicks on the WiFi icon in the title bar he should see what type of connection his MacBook has negotiated with the router. For example here is what mine shows (the connection type is listed as a 802.11/g, 2.4GHz, 54Mbps, channel 11, 20 MHz, etc):
Another thing to try and make a quick measure of the speed between his MacBook and the local router and your Mini is copy a big file from your computer to his. That will give you a good idea of the speed of his wireless connection to the router.
    Good luck...

  • New iMac faster than my MacPro?

I've recently purchased a new 24" iMac for a 2nd home I have out west. After a few days tinkering with it I'm pretty positive that this new machine is quicker than my 2 year old MacPro that I have at home. I was hoping after looking at the specs below if people could confirm that this should be the case.
The reason I'm wondering is that I even though the iMac is brand new, the Mac Pro was and still is far more expensive than the iMac. The main reason I would like to know for sure is that since I work from home and have fairly advanced needs (two VMWare Fusion vms running on top of OSX 60+ hours a week working with important financial software), if the iMac is indeed faster I may be looking for an upgrade. Before I essentially toss my $2700 MacPro to the side though I want to make sure the lag that I notice that I don't yet see on the iMac couldn't be simply cured with an OS reinstall, which hasn't been done in over 2 years.
I'm also a little unsure of how to compare the Xeon vs the current Pentium processors, as well as how important the 1067mhz vs the 667mhz ram is to my needs. I basically run two Fusion VMs with 1gb dedicated to each one in Unity, Safari, iTunes, Mail, Adium, and Skype occasionally.
    Specs for each machine..
    24" iMac - 2.93ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram 1067mhz, 600gb ATA HD, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256MB
    MacPro w 30" Cinema - 2 x 2.66Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon, 5GB Ram 667mhz, 250GB ATA HD, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
    All advice greatly appreciated.

I'm also a little unsure of how to compare the Xeon vs the current Pentium processors
No Intel Mac has ever had a "Pentium" inside.
The Mac Pro would be faster for applications that are designed to use multiple processors. It has 4 cores versus 2 in the iMac.
VMware Fusion has a option (in the virtual machine's settings) to use more than one +virtual processor+, but it is not as efficient booting the OS directly. Also, it probable that things like the financial software you are running on the virtual machine is itself not designed to take advantage of multiple cores. Therefore, CPU clock speed becomes the overriding factor for performance in your case. Since the new iMac runs at 2.93 GHz versus 2.66 GHz for the Mac Pro, it is certainly possible that your iMac is faster than the Mac Pro, in your situation. If you were running Final Cut Studio or Logic Studio (or other app that takes advantage of all the cores), the Mac Pro would be faster.
Also, Snow Leopard has a new technology called Grand Central Dispatch
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/technology/#grandcentral
which is supposed to make use of multiple cores more efficient under Mac OS X. I don't think it will have too much impact on existing third-party software, but it will be interesting to see what the developers at VMware and other third-parties software firms can do with it. So your Mac Pro with four cores may become more efficient (faster) under Snow Leopard.

  • Slow Internet Speed after Leopard

I'm having a funny problem since the installation of Leopard and that is very slow internet browsing speed. But its not as simple as it sounds. I have another Windows PC on the same network; when its on mac internet speed is slow, when Windows PC is off the Mac internet speed if fast and normal.
I'm not alone in this problem. I read similar problems on Apple Gazette after installing Leopard. Any suggestions?

  • Something faster than the Elgato Turbo?

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro 2.66 and from what I've read on line, there's no point in getting the Elgato Turbo Encoder. Is there something I can get which will encode faster than the Mac Pro 2.66?

  • Wired Internet Speed ridiculously slow

I am running Windows 8 64 bit on an HP Pavilion p7-1414 Desktop PC.
For a while I have had a pretty good experience, but for whatever reason my brother decided he should do a HP System Recovery and completely reinstalled Windows. Anyways, got everything set up again but noticed that the Internet speed was slower than usual. Contacted my ISP and asked about it and they said it wasn't anything wrong with the connection. Before the recovery I did not have this problem, but I noticed that it gets EXTREMELY bad when I install AVG free or even BitDefender, any antivirus besides Norton. I can try downloading say, a game, and the internet speed will start out at the usual 1MB per second, then it will rapidly decrease until it gets to about 15-400kb per second. If I pause and unpause it, it will start higher than 400 but then decrease to its usual speed.
I have tried another reinstallation of Windows, which didn't do any good. I have installed all possible Windows updates and Driver updates.
I just don't know what to do now, has anyone else ran into this problem and managed to fix it?
Edit: I should also mention that for some reason the Wireless adapter will not work on this computer anymore either, this happened after the first reinstallation. I have tried two different networks, neither work on my computer but work flawlessly with my Android phone and Xbox 360.
I'm not sure but maybe the Internet driver has something to do with it? In any case, the one I have is Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) while the wireless one is: Ralink RT5390R 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you have installed and uninstalled multiple antivirus it is possible that some remnants of one are interferring with another.
It's just a hunch, but that's what I think it is.
I would suggest getting rid of Norton completely since their antivirus costs money and is a resource hog.
There is a program to uninstall it, search for it on google, called nonav.exe (No N.orton A.nti V.irus) and it thoroughly deletes all traces of norton.
As far as wireless goes there might be a switch that isn't obvious.  When you go to device manager, is it installed?

  • Slow internet speed on Mac, but not on iPad

So, I've just tested my internet speed on my Mac and I got  very low results. I also ran the test on my iPad and got the full and regular speed. I noticed that indeed the internet is faster on my iPad. This wasn't happening at all, not that I can remember. Is my Mac's network card damaged or something?

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can.
Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all slow?
Are all network applications slow, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always slow, or only sometimes?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
Boot in safe mode and test. Any difference?

  • New Mac Pro 8-core / D700 not much faster than an iMac... in PPro CC.

So.... my very preliminary testing with our new Mac Pro using the plugin I use most (filmconvert -FC) anyway, shows that Premiere CC needs more optimization for the dual GPUs. In fact, I'd say the CPU utilization is not up to snuff either.
I know FC only uses one GPU presently from the developer. That will change. In the meantime, using a couple of typical projects with that plugin as an example, I'm only seeing 25-45% speed up in renders over our maxed out iMac (late 2012, 27") exporting the same project. That's significant of course but not the 100%+ one would think we would be seeing at the least given the MacPro config of 8 cores and dual D700s. Premiere Pro CC seems in fact to never maximize CPU (never mind GPUs). I have yet, in my very limited testing, see it "pin the meters" like I did on the iMac.
Of course that's just testing now two short (under 5 min) projects, and it depends on what one is doing. Some stuff is much, much faster like Red Giant's Denoiser II or Warp Stabilizer VFX. The improvement there can be 3-4x faster anecdotally.  I used to avoid them for speed reasons unless absolutely needed a lot of the time but now they are fast enough to rely on quickly. Other stuff unrelated top PPro CC like DxO PRIME noise removal on RAW stills is much faster too, as is Photoshop CC.  Some effects like blur, sharpening, resize there are nearly instant now even on giga pixel files in Photoshop CC.
And of course FCPX is much faster on it but I hate the whole editing paradigm. The timeline is just horrid on it; simple things like replacing a word in someone's dialogue is a multi click, multistep process that is nearly instant in Premiere and most every other NLE. Just to try to see your whole timeline is a chore, to see what your edits and sound are in detail are problematic, trying to keep things in sync is a chore, and you can't even zoom your timeline window to full screen! If anybody has edited for any amount of time, I do not understand how they use FCP X. If they start with that program, for example if they are young, then that is a different beast.
I'm sure Adobe will improve over time. They have to to stay competitive. In the meantime I'll take my 45%... but I wish I saw much more improvement given the cost and hardware differential. Unfortiunately, for now, the mainstream reviews I have seen regarding PPro performance on this machine were right.

That statement about 4k/5k in Premiere CC with the nMP is false, insofar as performance goes.
I just tested 5K Red raw files just dragged into Premiere Pro CC (latest version). I expected this to be slow, given my HD experience. However, on my 8 core/D700, I can play 1/2 just fine, full speed. And I even can also do that with a very streneous plugin/filter attached - FilmConvert (in OpenCL mode), also at 1/2 which is quite impressive. I can even add a bunch of other Premiere filters and SG looks and it still stays at full speed at 1/2.
Ironically, this is quite faster than FCPX which can't seem to play back 5K at all with that filter attached (it doesn't stutter, but it's not smooth... low resolution at "best performace" and reduced frame rate). Even if I remove all filters FCPX plays back Red 4k (again not transcoded) about the same as CC at 1/2, but with a seemingly lower resolution to keep it smooth.  It's a head scratcher. It's like Adobe's Red handling is much better coded than Apple's in this case.
Or... it has to be attrituable to that particular plugin (other FCPX motion-based plugins don't suffer the same fate and are fast). But either way, filter or no, Premiere Pro CC is definitely and sharper looking at 1/2 when cutting Red 4k/5k with no transcode, playback in real time, than FCPX which needs to bump it down to what looks like a 1/4 or less rez to keep it smooth. So I have no idea what is going on.
This experience is the opposite with HD, where FCPX is significantly faster (using the same filters/plugin, using C300 Canon XF for HD and 4 and 5K RedRaw alternatively).  Premiere seems slower in HD than FCPX by a good amount in HD and signficantly faster with Redraw 4k. Go figure.
