PC is hanging on Bios screen

Just recently started having a weird problem that just goes away again for a while.
On power-up the computer hangs on the Bios black screen with just AMD Athlon 1700 detected.
TheD-bracket lights are 1 & 3 red indicating "Testing base and extended memory"
I have 2 x 256MB DDR and I treid moving them from 1 & 2 slots to 1 & 3 and 2 & 3. One way caused a blue screen APIC error and the other config caused corrupted grahics straight away.
Any ideas anyone?
As I said it does 'go away' but I wonder if it will become terminal.
Cheers

I was just about to post on this very same issue. I took the above advise and ran memtest but it found no errors.
I have the same ram (crucial 2x256)
Antec PP-303xp (300 watt psu)
bios 2.4
maybe finding common ground can help
My list to do includes upgrading to bios 2.6, and playing with the slots of the ram. I already reseeded the ram.

  • Desktop hangs on BIOS screen

Hi, I have an Elite H8-1010 desktop PC. I was trying to install Windows 8 on the computer and changed to order of my boot sequence so that it would start from the hard drive first and not the CD drive (every time the computer rebooted during the installation it would start from the disk and try to start the install all over again). Anyway, after I changed the settings I saved them in my BIOS and restarted to hopefully continue the installation. No such luck, all the computer does now is hang at the BIOS screen and proceed no further.
I have already tried unplugging everything from the mobo (except CPU of course) and the computer beeps like it should, but when I have it  with just the essentials plugged in (CPU, graphics card, RAM and boot drive) I get the same hang at the BIOS screen. I also tried changing the jumpers to reset the BIOS according to the mobo sheet for my computer on HP's website, but the picture of the jumpers they have does not match what is on my mobo.
I'm really hoping there is a way to fix this and that it's not because I somehow fried my motherboard. Any helpful suggestions are much appreciated and welcomed.

    HI,
Unplug your boot drive (HDD) form mobo and then chekc. if you are getting sucessfully POST screen of your mobo then you have a faulty HDD.
try to reformat HDD with some other tool and then try to install new os in it.
    Hope it helps!

  • Z77a-gd65 hangs on bios screen and also doesn't boot

    i7 3770k
    MSI GTX 670
    2x8GB 1300 memory.
I cannot get into the bios.  If I hook the monitor to the gtx 670, I can get it to display the msi bios screen "temperature, boot device priority" but that's it.  There's no data, no temperature, just like it put the bios image up and then hung.
Right after hitting the cmos button, I get the following:
    E7751 IMS  v10.5 4/27/2012
    i7 3770k 3.5ghz
    16gb ddr 1333 dual channel
It doesn't seem to let me hit "f1 to setup" or "f2 to continue" with a ps2 keyboard.
If I boot from the cd to try and install winki, there's some info that flashes too fast to see but its to the choice of install, and then whatever option I choose, it will display a clear screen with the logo and eventually the screen goes black with a blinking cursor.
If I boot from a usb linux drive I have, it again goes through the boot choices, and then the screen goes black a few seconds in.  Doing this I think I got the mainboard leds to display "ff"  otherwise they display either "00" or "ad" or "ae".
The monitor is apple monitor through an adc to dvi adapter.  I've used this for years on an ati radeon on a p4 windows setup so it shouldn't be a problem but...  if I hook the monitor directly to the mainboard onboard video, the bios screen graphics stop hanging open, the screen just immediately goes black.
I've tried clearing the bios with the button, switching the multibios, and jumpering the cmos with the power off.
I have not tried flashing the bios, I was thinking about doing that through winki but it won't load.
    Thanks.

I tried just one stick of ram in a different slot but no difference.
And as in my first post I tried the onboard a bit but it was about the same.  Actually I forgot what I tried, I just now tried the apple cinema display to the onboard video card and unpowered the gtx 670 without taking it off the board and the display doesn't come on at all.
I think that was what it was last time I tried the onboard, that I thought it might be something about the adc-dvi converter.  But it works besides.
Why would it be able to get to the boot choice screen but not the bios though?  The PSU has a 7 year warranty, its probably decent, manual says 62.4a +12v .8a -12v
One other thing, if this matters.  The first two blue lights are always on on the motherboard, the voltage indicators or whatever, but when it tries to load winki, the other blue lights blink.  And right now, with the monitor on the onboard, all the lights are on.  But the monitor isn't.
Also, do you need a mouse plugged in, that probably wouldn't make a difference, I think I've tried that as well.

  • Lenovo B570 Stuck at bios screen

I have a B570 that I recieved with a cracked LCD.  Upon replacing it everything powers on just fine however I cannot get into the bios.  When I press F2 it just says please wait in the bottom corner but never enters the BIOS.  Furthermore it will not go past the bios either.  The progress bar on the bios splash screen will get about half way done then just hang.  I have tried booting without the hard drive and it does the same thing.  It never gets past the BIOS screen.  There are no beeps or anything.

    Hi theath6123,
You may want to try removing the RAM on your computer just to check if the system would beep. Also you may want to try reseating your RAM. Please exercise caution while doing this and please follow the rules listed under Chapter 7. Removing and replacing a FRU under page 45 of hardware and maintenance manual.
See if reseating the RAM allows you to go into the bios options. After that you can put in the HDD back and see if it is detected under the bios. From there you can try to boot to windows from your hard drive.
Listed below is the link for the hardware and maintenance manual:
    B570 manual
Let me know if this helps.

  • K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030) Hangs at BIOS

Sorry if this was asked before.
My motherboard is acting a bit weird. This doesn't happen every time, but every once in a while when I reboot or power on my computer, it just 'hangs' at the BIOS screen. It doesn't attempt to boot to any device; all I see is the Platinum logo. The system is not locked up, as I can hit F10 and see the standard BIOS screen that displays about of memory, etc. I'll hit the reset button on the computer or CTRL+ALT+DEL and it usually boots then, but sometimes I have to do that more than once.
Is anyone else having this problem?. And does anyone know what to do to resolve this problem?.
    Thanks.

    Panoramix,
You only have the singlle Sata yes ?
if so you can simplify the list (which is a good ide btw)
    Quote
    1. Hook up the drive to serial port 1/2/3/4. There has been issues around with people using SATA port 1 and 2 in regards to overclockability. If possible always use SATA port 3 or 4 unless doing a Raid 0+1 or 1 where 4 are required.
    4. Go into "Integrated Peripherals"
    5. Press ENTER on "Onboard Devices"
    6. Press ENTER on "RAID Config" select "disabled" on all drives
    Quote
    8. Return to "Onboard Devices" menu
    9. Locate the SATA1/SATA2 - SATA3/SATA4 and enable the option that corresponds with your drive.
    10. Back out to "Integrated Peripherals"
    11. Go into "Ide Function Setup"
    12. Check that relevent "Sata DMA"  is  Enabled
    Quote
    13.From here we will exit/save
    reboot
    Insert Windows cd
    2. Very first thing we will do is boot into the BIOS and go into "Standard CMOS Features"
    3. Check to make sure your drive is located on what SATA channel you have the drive plugged into
    18. Go into "Advanced BIOS Features"
    19. You will want first boot device to be CD-ROM for Windows XP/2k installs.
    20. You will want the second boot device to read HARD DRIVE.
    21. Save/Exit
The screen will prompt to boot from Cd
press the any key to continue
You dont need to load any drivers so can continue through the load driver stage.
When your asked where you want to place the new installation :-
    a) If a new drive Select the make partition & enter the size you want in Mb & Format.it
If you have an early version of windows be aware it will only see 1st 137GB of drive. So format 1st Os Partition only. Rest of drive can be formatted subsequently with Admin tools once windows is running & has been updated at least to SP1.
    b) Select existing partition or delete existing partition & proceed from a)
From here you should be able to complete the install of Windows XP/2K fine. You can go into the bios and make "hard drive" first boot if you wish now.
The above looks complicated as i've not renumbered your original steps.
the bottom line is you dont normally need to do anything with raid or install drivers
    when using single sata
you might also like to look at  Help putting a computer together
Hope this doesnt confuse you but the above is simpler.

  • Random hanging at boot screen?

My system K8T800 Neo & 3200+ was working fine now sometimes the pc just hangs on the first boot screen and can take about 3 or 4 restarts to get it to boot, my initial thoughts are PSU, its an enermax 465W, ive tried changing HDD's three different types of ram unplugging all ide and pci devices and not required. I will have to get the voltages from my psu but whats the best way of finding these out, in the Bios screen? Bios 1.2
    Thanks in advance

Lately it's gotten a lot worse.  CTRL+ALT+DEL or the Reset button does not seem to help; it will just reboot to the Platinum screen and stay there.  If I power off the computer and turn it back on, then it boots usually, but not always.
I'm seriously thinking of ditching this motherboard and buying a different brand.  I've already had to RMA an MSI GeForce6800 and now my MSI motherboard is going bad.  I'm not too happy right now.

  • HELP! iMac G5 hangs at blue screen, but boots in Safe Mode

Please can anyone guide me to recover my iMac G5 PowerMac 8,2 running OS X 10.4.11.
Problem; Mac hangs on start-up at blue screen after grey Apple screen. Mouse pointer eventually appears but that is all.
Actions taken so far without success:
    1.  Disconnected the printer and rebooted - no success.
    2. Booted in Safe Mode - first time the screen was completely scrambled but with safe mode log on screen showing through.
2.1 Rebooted in Safe Mode OK This has not occurred again and I have entered Safe Mode twice more without problems.  But worrying!
2.2  In Safe Mode I ran disk Utility and verified and repaired Permissions, mostly old EpsonPrinter files.
2.3  I also verified the Disk, which was reported OK.
2.4  I was able to save critical documents to USB............  Phew!
2.5  Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    3. Reset PRAM
3.1 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    4. Reboot in Safe mode - works fine.  NOTE: time and date appear to be correct and dont need resetting.
4.1 Run Disk Utility again and Verify Permissions - OK.  Nothing needed fixing.
4.2 Run Disk Verify - Passed OK
4.3 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success.  Hangs at blue screen with mouse pointer visible and working.  Then pointer vanishes.
I would be most grateful for your help in moving this forward

Got to figure out which which of the things dropped when you boot in safe mode is causing the problem.

  • Boot Camp on Snow Leopard can't install Windows-Stuck on black BIOS screen

I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on an early 2008 Mac Pro (dual 3.2Ghz Harperton CPU's, 10gb RAM) with Boot Camp version 3.0.4 (all updated). I've successfully had a Boot Camp partition in the past, running WindowsXP32 Bit. I just purchased Windows7 Professional and can't install either the 32bit or 64 bit version. Neither can I install any of my original Windows disc. Boot Camp successfully creates the partion, then asks me to install the Windows install DVD/CD which I do, and then when it reboots, it gets stuck in a black BIOS screen that says "Initializing..."
I've tried all my Windows discs: WindowsXP-32bit, Vista-32Bit, Vista-64Bit, Windows7-32Bit, Windows7-64Bit. Same problem...gets hung on the black BIOS screen. I disconnected all my USB hardware except for my keyboard/mouse. All my other internal drives are disconnected.
The only thing that I can think of is that is different is my MacHD is a 500GB Seagate MomentusXT solid state hybrid drive.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!
    Thanks

    Hi fellow Mac buddie,
I just zapped the PRAM, and also reset the SMC switch on the mother board.....no luck.
In refenece to the hybrid SSD drive, I've already taken that one out, put in a fresh 3.5" drive, formatted and installed  a fresh clean version of Lion OS, and then attempted the Boot Camp install using Lion with the newest Boot Camp version (3.1 or 3.2) Please see my original post above.
    Same issue, black BIOS screen.
Also tried Boot Camp Windows install on a second drive in drive bay 2 (an option now in Lion's Boot Camp)
    same issue, black BIOS screen.
Lastly, I've tried all these interations using my three different Windows install disks (XP, Vista, Windows7).
XP is a "full install" disk, Vista and Windows7 are upgrade disks. But I've had XP installed previously using Boot Camp with no problem. So I'm confused I can't even install XP.
As another option, I went to a friend who has a PC, and I installed Windows 7 on a new hard drive. I'm about to install that in drive bay 2, reboot while holding down "option", and see if I can boot directly into that disk.
That's a workaround, as is VMWare Fusion which I have and Windows7 works fine as a virtual machine.
But when something doesn't work the way it's supposed to (in this case Boot Camp), it bugs me makes me want to know why it doesn't. I'll report back with regard to the 2nd bay Windows7 hard drive install.

In Lion, Safari pages hang in full screen mode.  If you exit full screen mode, the next page you intended to view appears.
This happens nearly every time I use Safari.  I will be clicking on links, when it appears to hang.  By exiting full screen mode, upon minimizing the next page I was intending to view appears.  This does not happen on all websites, but many that I visit.

Here's a stupid question, but I'm sure I'm not the only one - how exactly DO you minimize the safari fullscreen mode??  I keep reading about orange or yellow tabs which don't exist, at least on my 27 iMac. Control m doesn't work either. I wish Apple would have a basic 3 or 4 page instruction manual on this. Unless there are major bugs still.  By the way, this is only one of many problems I'm having with Safari.  Occasionally the tool bar just dissappears. And, don't get me started about how the dock in Lion simply stopped accepting some icons, including Firefox. None of these problems happened when I first installed Lion. Each upgrade seems to have more bugs, not less.

  • GE70 2OE won't go past bios screen

Hi, I bought a new GE70 2OE 7 days ago and I'm having trouble with it.
It came with window 8 pre installed. I did all the update then upgraded to windows 8.1 and all went fine. I also made my recovery disks before any updates and after all the updates. I installed some programs along with iTunes but after this I kept getting advertisements poping up which was very annoying, I tryed to stop them but they kept appearing so I thought I would do a clean install. Started with disk 1 and whent to 6. When it told me to reboot it went to the bios screen. Thinking I hade hit the del button with my finger. I exited and rebooted but it still goes to the bios screen. When it gets post the boot logo there is some righting the pops up for a fraction of a second, I think it says some thing about nvidia. It keeps doing this all the time.

    Hi Dec,
The scrolling blue bars indicate that the Wondiows operating system is being loaded from the hard drive. If this process stalls during the load then it is likely that either the hard drive itself is defetive or the files which are being loaded are corrupt and cannot be loaded.
Interfering with the CMOS chip will not correct this problem since the BIOS has already been loaded at this stage.
If you have access to a bootable CD/DVD (such as Norton Disk Doctor) then I siggest you try booting from it and running a scan of your hard drive. Alternatively you could try re-installing your operating system from the Toshiba recovery CDs but this will over-write any of your own data on your hard drive.

  • Blackberry Torch 9860 hangs on home screen

I was using whatsapp and suddenly the phone freezed. When I re-inserted the battery, it froze again at the home screen where we have to enter the device password. It freezes in safe mode too. This is the first time I'm experiencing this problem. Earlier, it used to hang on logo screen but I got my phone replaced as it was in warranty. now it is out of warranty. Please suggest me some solution for this. I tried to wipe all the data by connecting it with my pc. But it doesn't get connected to the pc. Please help. Early response will be appriciated. Thanks on advance.

Have you tried Safe Mode?  Remove the battery.  While holding down the back key insert the battery.  Continue to hold the back key for another 20 seconds while the device begins to boot.  If that doesn't work proceed to this step:
Download JL_Cmder and see if you can wipe the device with that.  You may need to remove the battery and reboot it and then plug it in right away to see if you can get connected to it.  It may take a few tries at various stages of boot to get it to connect.  If you can get the wipe to take and give you a 507 error you can easily reload the OS.

  • How to load bios screen at startup?

I'm trying to access the bios screen at startup. This computer has the Mac side and a Windows PC side. I want to open the bios screen in the Windows PC side (if this makes a difference) so that I can change the booting options. Can someone please help!?

iMacs and other computers from Apple do NOT contain a BIOS like Windows machines.  They use EFI in place of the BIOS and it is not user accessible.  To select which OS you boot into you need to hold down the "Command" and "R" keys while starting up and this will then load the OS selection screen.
    Hope this helps

  • Hanging on blue screen during boot (but Safe Mode OK)

Strange stuff with my iMac G5 -- machine boots normally, gets through Apple icon and spinning spiral, then hangs on blue screen and stays there. Mouse cursor moves but that's it.
Safe boot works normally, all safe-mode functions good. But need network, other services back.
History: Spent most of past week downloading huge, multi-gig file. It eventually downloaded successfully, but during process my wife put computer to sleep a couple of nights without halting download.
Didn't have adverse effect first time, but it froze Finder second and third times, necessitating reboots. Also killed wireless connections for all PCs in network those two times iMac needed reboot, had to reboot gateway as well.
Morning after download finished (Friday), iMac failed to wake up from sleep, wouldn't boot normally, had to go into Safe mode.
Additional RAM was recently installed, but has worked well. Safe mode shows full two gigs in use.
    Solutions I've tried, without success:
-- Trashing network preferences in both user and system
-- Re-installing Finder and NetworkInterface apps using Pacifist
-- Removing recently installed extensions in System (extensions put back after that failed to resolve issue)
-- Removing recently installed Startup items (again, put back after that failed to resolve issue)
Clearly it's got something to do with the network interface, but I've tried everything I know how to do. Any ideas? I'm out of them.
    Thanks in advance.

The Airport card is not removable in this model -- 2nd rev G5 iMac, with automatic light sensor.
    But -- I think I've found what's wrong. Unfortunately there's no easy fix ...
It's most likely the bad-capacitor issue that plagued the 1st rev of G5 iMacs. (This particular machine was a refurb bought direct from Apple in the fall of 2005, so it's possible bad caps were put on during the refurbishing.)
I first heard about the problem a couple of days ago but figured a hardware diagnostic test would catch it. More online research reveals that the hardware test doesn't.
When I popped the case this morning to yank the new RAM, there were definitely a few capacitors that had domed tops. Nothing spilling out anywhere, which was what I was looking for, but I've since found out that even contained bulging is a sign of failure. The capacitors should be instead perfectly flat-topped.
So ... I'm gonna call Apple tomorrow morning and see how much it would cost to replace the mobo. There have been reports in forums that Apple sometimes offers to do it for free, even in cases occurring within the few months.
See this link for examples of Apple picking up the tab for complete mobo replacement: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090314071508354
If that offer isn't made, I will look into having the capacitors replaced. This is at the edge of my own technical abilities so I will first ask my techie friends if they can do it for $100 or so, plus parts ... and if not I'm gonna try to do it myself.
This guy shows you how and sells inexpensive parts to do it with: http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php
There is also a guy out in Missouri who replaces bad capacitors on motherboards for a living: http://www.badcaps.net/ Looks as if he'll charge between $80-120 including shipping and parts. So I may go that route.
In any case it turns out Apple did know about this issue back in 2005 and even instituted a program to fix iMacs that had problems stemming from it for free. (Dell Optiplex machines also had the same problem, which was traced back to a few Taiwanese manufacturers.)
Unfortunately there was no recall (Apple would never have lived that down) nor was the issue highly publicized. You had to wait until your own machine acted up, and then the free-repair program expired at the end of 2008.
I myself never knew about it until a few days ago, and I usually keep up on this stuff -- which is something I will make very clear when I'm on the phone with Apple tomorrow.
