  • What files need to be backed up to make sure film project is safe?

Editing a feature film using Premiere Pro, Audition, Speedgrade, and possibly After Effects?  My question is what files do I need to backup to make sure the film project is safe in the event that the computer and hard drive both break.  Editing on a computer, with footage stored on external hard drive.  Will use a separate 2nd hard drive for the files to be backed up.
I know I need to backup the .pproj Premiere pro files backed up.  I know I need to backup the footage shot (both video and audio files) backed up.  I recently learned that I need to backup the files created by Audition, when I send an audio clip from Premiere to Audition and back to Premiere for audio editing.
So my question is this: what other files need to be backed up?  If I round trip to from Premiere to Speedgrade and back to Premiere, is there a file created that I need to back up?  If I do a round trip from Premiere to After Effects and back to Premiere is there a file that needs to be backed up?  Are there any other files that need to be backed up?
My goal - back up all files needed, so if I need to resurrect the project after computer and hard drive break, that I will have all files necessary to continue editing, and that no footage, or edits, or color corrections, or audio edits will be lost at all.
    Thanks in advance.

Hey there Matt, nice to "see" you here too!
I can answer one question directly: when round-tripping PrPro/Sg/PrPro, the only place Sg files "changes" is back in the PrPro project file. Essentially, its designed to function much like perhaps a plug-in "within" PrPro. So that part is one of the nifty things of the Direct-Link PrPro/Sg. Now something I'm curious about in your request is how the other folks with LARGE project back things up whilst working. I know they do not archive the previews & cache, but ... with a large project ... can/does it save time to backup those files also when you do get a crash/corrouption. Is it faster to get back working if you backup the cache/previews?
You note wondering where to store the outputs of Audition work-sessions. I put them in the "main" projects folder-tree. I know others feel this is "content" and put them in with the video/graphics folder-tree. I started doing it this way, but now ... wonder if the other is "cleaner" though the difference may be more of intellectual curiosity than having any actual affect on diddly. Note, as I've got separate discs for each part of vid work ... programs/system, cache & previews, projects, footage/graphics, renders ... that does influence having separate folder-trees per project on separate drives. If the project & content files are all on one drive, well ... that's simpler to backup/archive.
Video projects are so space-hogging these days ... "footage" just gets bigger you know! ... and projects more complex. Planning for both in-work backups and continual movement of material from project inception to archiving it off the "working" station is a must, as you are clearly aware. There are many different layouts folks have chosen or simply need to use for their workstation disc layout. This can have some effect on project "stage" planning also.
For those with a "hot" workstation with say a 4/5 disc RAID system for projects/footage/previews/cache so everything is on one big "system", I suspect everything can just live in appropriate folders under a project name to begin with. Backups and Archiving is pretty simple ... use a good backup program to copy & CHECK the the project master folders with sub-folders to your backup/Archive option/s, then delete off the working system (when Archiving).
And as noted here, there, and elsewhere ... putting all the "project" files & their assorted bits & pieces in one main folder per project, and then all footage/graphics/etc. "content" material in a joint folder-tree on the drive *that* lives on for working purposes make backing up & archiving/storing things much simpler. I've seen all sorts of things done afterwards but the simplest just seems to be collating the "project" files folders and the "assets" (content) files/folders under a general project name folder

  • Crystal Reports Server XI - what files need to be backed up?

I don't want to set up a fail over cluster which there seems to be plenty of information on.
All I want to do is identify what files I need to backup incase I need to do a restore.
We use Tivoli Storage Manageru2019s backup and recovery solution for backups
    Any help would be appreciated...

Depends on the complexity of your deployment. Basically, your CMS DB and the FileStore directory are the only objects outside of the application itself that need to be backed up. The CMS DB contains all your security and links to reports, while the FileStore contains all the reports and instances themselves. You want to have the backups of these synchronized, so that you limit the number of report links that point to nothing, or have reports in your FileStore that have no links to them.
Other than that, if you have made modifications to your deployment to allow for LDAP/AD authentication, modification to server properties to adjust timeouts or orther parameters, etc you should have these documented so that they can be reaccomplished.
If you have the CMS DB and the FileStore, you can reinstall, point to the CMS DB, point to the FileStore, and be back up and running.
Those Tivoli backups should not be run on the entire installation volume while the system is up and processing scheduled reports. You will see the backup program report errors, as temp files are being created/destroyed, and executables will be locked. It may still run successfully with errors, but it may also cause issues with the report processing and stability of your system. Depends on how busy it is - it could still run successfully if it's quiet. Recommended best practice is to stop services, backup, start services.

  • What files need to be backed up before I change my hard drive?

I want to upgrade my hard drive from 120gb to 250gb. I want to start with a fresh OS. Is there a file I can copy to let Itunes know this is the same computer so I dont have to start from scratch with all my devices? I had a virus in the past aand would rather not copy the drive completely, just essentials.

You do need to backup your entire hard drive, preferably in the form of a bootable clone, using either SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner.
If you really had a virus you made history!
No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download for Tiger from:
    http://www.clamxav.com/download.php#tiger
and for Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion from here:
    http://www.clamxav.com/
The appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X.  It's available here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/
Download, install and run those two applications before cloning your hard drive, and you will be quite safe!

  • WHAT TM FILES NEED TO BE BACKED UP FOR REDUNDANCY?

I have an Imac Duo with a 750gig internal. I have a 1TB external dedicated to Time Machine. Still concerned about losing data, I just purchased an additional 1TB external and was planing to backup the Time Machine drive using Deja Vu software. Do I have to backup the whole thing, mirror it or just the packet files? Not sure if I'm explaining this properly so basically, if anyone with a good redundancy plan can reply, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

External drives are great, but may not protect you in case of fire, theft, flood, or direct lightning strike on your power lines. Thus a secondary, off-site backup is excellent practice (and what I call "Prudent paranoia").
This can be as simple as copying some critical data to DVD/RWs and taking them to your safe deposit box, workplace, or a relative's house.
And/or, put relatively-small amounts of data online (to iDisk via MobileMe and Apple's Backup app, or other places via MOZY or the like.
And/or, getting a pair of portable hard drives and making full bootable "clones" via CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or the like, updating them daily if possible (perhaps at 3 am). Then periodically, say a week, swap them and take the current one off-site.

  • I really need to go back to the save I made a day ago, my time machine is not set up and files haven't been automatically uploading to cc is there anyway I can go back a day in saves?

Hi, I just had an issue with a photoshop document, my mac book temporarily crashed the screen glitches and deleted some vital layers I had constructed (took half a day) I thought I could correct it and saved it a few times in a panic and now i really need to go back to the save I made a day ago, my time machine is not set up and I just realised my files haven't been automatically uploading to cc is there anyway I can go back a day in saves?

So you don't have anything like Shadow Protect running in the background?
Video editing software only needs to save the steps taken to achieve the edit, and references the actual video files from the hard drive.  So the saved files are only tiny, and it takes very little drive space to auto save to incrementing file names.  Obviously, Photoshop files can be huge by comparison, so the only way to save with a different file name is to do it manually.
I think most regular posters to this forum make a point of updating the file name of a large project every hour or so, and as a direct response to reading so many horror stories like your own.  The worst story I remember was from a poster whose computer had crashed half way through saving a large PSD file.  After several response, questions and answers, it turned out he was using a laptop with a failing battery.  He told us that he could see the battery was getting low, but left it and left it before finally hitting Ctrl s and running off to find the laptop's power lead. When he got back the laptop had run out of power and shut down, and his PSD file was lost forever.  He may have been a prime candidate to a computing Darwin Award, but his stupidity still did the rest of us a service so we could learn from his mistake.
    Ouch.
My digital audio workstation works on the same principle; it creates a backup save just in case things go wrong (which--knock on wood--hasn't happened to me) and only references audio/MIDI files that are related to the project.
My advice is to always, always back up sensitive documents. There are lots of ways of doing this, from manually to automatically. (e.g., A lot of higher-end routers let you connect external storage via USB so you can run backup software that detects any changes to a monitored folder over a network and then backs up any changed/updated documents to the connected storage. I prefer to do it myself manually, though.)

  • I have a late 2009 iMac. I installed OSX 10.8.4 and want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a 1.5TB external HD. Are there any issues I need to know about or tips I need to know before doing this? Thanks.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

    Lanny -
Thank you for taking the time to help with this problem. Can I just say however that as someone who has posted a first comment here and quite clearly never used a forum like this before, your comment unfortunately comes across as very excluding. It makes me feel there are a set of unwritten rules that I should know, and that I don't know them shows that the forum is not for me. In short, it's exactly the kind of response that stops people like me using forums like this.
I'm sure it's not intended to be received like this and I am sure that the way you have responded is quite normal in the rules of a forum like this. However, it is not normal for those of us who aren't familiar with forums and who only encounter them when they have a genuine problem. This is why I hope it is helpful to respond in full.
The reason I posted here is as follows. I was directed here by the apple support website. The original comment seemed to be the only one I could find which referred to my issue. As there is no obvious guidance on how to post on a forum like this it seemed perfectly reasonable to try and join in a conversation which might solve more than one problem at once.
Bee's reply however is both helpful and warm. This could in fact be a template for how new members should be welcomed and inducted into the rules of the forum in a friendly and inclusive way. Thank you very much indeed Bee!

I am using CS6 InDesign on a PC using a Windows 7 operating system.
Due to eyesight issues, I need to have the menu bars of programs in easy-to-read font and picture size.  Specifically, the menu bar across the top (File, Edit, View, etc.), and the menu bar on the left side with the graphic depiction of options.
In earlier versions of Windows (e.g. XP), whenever I changed the screen resolution on my computer to a lesser resolution in order to show the link icons on my desktop in a larger, more readable size, all the software programs, including yours, appeared on my screen with the menu bars in the larger font size that I needed.
However, in Windows 7, this is not the case.  Even though I have selected the lowest resolution, making the icons on my desktop extremely large, I cannot read the options across the top menu bar of your program, nor the pull-down menu items that they contain.  I cannot see the graphic depictions of options on the left side of the screen. They are all too small.  How can I make your program increase the size?

    NO way.

I don't think it's possible if you are stuck in recovery mode but I may be wrong...
Since your device qualifies for iOS 8(.1), that is the version that will be downloaded/restored to the iPad.
I do know that you can restore your iPad (from backup & as new) and keep the same iOS version if you restore using the iPad itself under Settings/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings but since you can't access this because your stuck in recovery mode, the point is moot.
Have you tried downloading the update in the middle of the night (2 am or so) where dropouts are much less likely to occur?
It's always possible to take your device in to an Apple Store (make a Genius Bar reservation first) and do the iOS update there in the Apple Store.. I'm sure they will gladly help you out with it and not charge you a thing. The trouble with that would be if you don't have an Apple Store nearby.
Sorry I couldn't be of any more help.

Can synced photos on my iPad be sent back to my Mac? I lost pics in my iPhoto file needed for a presentation.

And of course I forgot about the built in way to send them back to the Mac .... Email them. You can email up to 5 photos at at time.
Launch the photos app, while looking at the photos in thumbnail view - tap the arrow icon in the upper right corner - tap on up to 5 photos at a time - Tap the Share button in the upper left corner - tap email from the resulting window.

I have done an icloud backup on my iPad mini. I now need to get back one of the iMovie videos that I backed up. How do I restore one individual file?

You can't. When you restore from a backup it will restore everything in the backup. You might be able to find a third party app that will allow you to extract individual files from an iTunes backup, but not with an iCloud backup.

So as a bit of background we've got a homehub 2 and for the most part we've been pretty happy with it. Not too many issues and a fairly steady connection (just came off a run of 16 days without any drops which for us is fairly fantastic) so no probs.
