PC issues? - one Mac (iChat 2.5) works, another (iChat3.1) doesn't

Hello.
Yet another "video chat with PC" issue. But it has me stumped. This is the situation:
I am running a G4 Powerbook (Panther 3.9) with iChat 2.1. I am able to successfully video chat with my big (as in older) sister who is running Windows XP and latest version of AIM(5.9). I am running over a wireless network through a Linksys ADSLmodem/Router combo (WAG54G ver 2). All great - bit choppy but more than adequate.
Here's the thing that is tres frustrating:
Another computer - an iBook running Tiger 10.4.3 and iChat 3.1 - on the same network (wireless etc) wont video chat with the same PC user!! I get my sister (PC user) to initiate the video chat, I accept it, and then she is able to see and hear me, but I only hear her -- What gives?
Seems to be that the problem is not with the XP setup (else it wouldn't work with the Panther system - right?).
Does this have something to do with DSCP QoS technology (something which I know nothing about) as indicated here: http://www.mvldesign.com/videoconferencetutorial.html?
Is is a router setup problem?
Any help, redirections, caring words of support would be great...
Regards, and thanks
Simon

Thanks for your responses. James - I have added you as a "buddy" - my buddyname (mac) is [email protected] - when you are next online I might try it out.
Ralph - I have had a good look over your site...
Neither of the macs had (and still don't!) their respective firewalls turned on... so doesn't seem to be the problem.
In terms of port forwarding on the modem/router -- it is using it, I tried to set up port forwarding for udp and tcp on port 5060 (for the specific ip of the iBook - which I have now manually set). .. but hasn't made any difference. But the router setup is very different from information on your site...
I also tried a completely different (much cheaper, and wired) router (with default settings) - but no luck - in fact, couldn't even replicate the "best" situation of this problem.
Just to reiterate, there is no problem with audio, and my sister gets video of me - but me not of her - so this would indicate my router/modem (wag45g ver 2) is not letting video data in - right? (except when I am using iChat 2.1 on PB running panther). This situation is NOT replicated when I invite her to chat - in this case we can't even get a "link" (an "outgoing" issue???).
I also tried turning off router's firewall - but it made no difference.
Apologies for my very nascent understandings of networks. When I read the word "packets" my eyes glaze over, and i start thinking of packets of potato chips.
mmmm ... chips.

Simon

  • DNS not resolving on one Mac but the other works fine in same local network

Snow Leopard is doing something strange to the DNS or the permission to ping.
I have 2 Macs on the same local network, connect through the same ISP (verizon FIOS). One has no problem resolving any domain, but the other is constantly not resolving some domains.
    The problem progresses like this:
    * All of a sudden, DNS is not resolving from Ethernet (when it did perfectly well a minute ago).
    * Then I switched to wireless (using the same LAN), and it resolved fine.
    * Then it failed completely a few minutes later.
    * Then I reboot my Mac, and it seemed to clear that, and worked for a day.
    * Then it failed again in both Ethernet and Wireless; rebooting does not fix it.
    * I cleared all the caches using Onyx, did "dscacheutil -flushcache", zapped the PRAM, reinstalled 10.6.2 combo update, repaired the permission, nothing works.
    * Since the unresolved domain is my own domain, I changed the nameserver, and waited for it to propagate to see if that may be the problem, since it appeared that it is not resolving the A Record, and I waited 72 hours, and it is not resolved or propagating to the local DNS, but it worked perfectly well on my other Mac within the same network.
    * Then I added other DNS, such as google DNS 8.8.8.8 or openDNS servers to it, but it didn't fix anything.
    * Then I "ping" either the unresolved domain or my own Mac .local, and it gave me the error "permission denied". (Whereas I have no problem pinging my own Mac or the unresolved domain in my other Mac that works!).
    * Then I "sudo ping" the unresolved domain or my own Mac, and it pinged perfectly well.
    * Then I tried "ping6" my own Mac or the unresolved domain on the broken Mac, and it worked fine!
    * Also, I used http://network-tools.com to ping it, and noticed that during the trace, somewhere along the route through te7-2.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com and po2.car04.dllstx5.theplanet.com, it timed out along the route, so I don't know if the timeout could have been causing the reject, but I doubted, because "sudo ping" locally will get through but "ping" does not.
So I think I traced the Snow Leopard DNS problem as follows:
    * Why does "ping6" works, but "ping" permission is denied unless the user is root?
    * I tried to "chmod 4755 ping" but it won't let me.
    * Is it because DNS is resolving using IPv6 but not IPv4?
    * Or is Snow Leopard somehow screwed up the permission to access ping or similar DNS service?
    * Why DNS has no problem in one Mac but caused problem on the other Mac, even though they are in the same local network?
    * The only difference between the Macs maybe because I have Parallels installed in the Mac that failed to resolve DNS (with the extra Parallels Shared Ethernet), which may be interfering with it, but I tried to turn Parallels Shared Ethernet off, and it did not fix the problem.
Can anyone help or have any idea that I can fix this nagging bug with DNS? The DNS had worked before, but it simply quit working all of a sudden, and nothing can resurrect it.
    Thanks.

Shut down Parallels and restart w/o letting any of Parallels TCP/IP stack resurrect itself. So many network issues with VM solutions. See if the problem persists. Create a new account and ping from there. Are your search domains manually entered on the 10.6 box?

  • How to clone one mac mini and restore on another

    Hi,
I have 2 mac mini's. Both are version OSX 10.6.8.
Is it possible to backup one Mac Mini and fully restore on the other so it is an exact clone? So software, files, user accounts, settings etc. would all need to be backed up and restored from the source machine to the target machine
    Cheers

    See:
    http://nyacomputing.com/how-to-create-a-bootable-clone-of-your-mac-hard-drive/
You can use Disk Utility if you boot into recovery as described in the article
If you want to cone one Mini to the other, Boot the source Mini in recovery and the other one in Target Disk mode and connect the two via firewire

  • Compatibility issues with mac OS - Lightroom 4 works where CS5 won't

Hope someone can shed some light on this issue...
I tried installing Lightroom 4 on Mac OS 10.6.1 (which is currently running CS5 without issues) but the specs call for OS 10.6.8 or later (10.7). When I updated my OS to 10.6.8, none of my CS5 apps work! They encounter launch errors - InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver... only Photoshop seems to work. So, I reverted back to OS 10.6.1 and all the programs function. Is Adobe working on a solution to fix this issue? I see with the forums that several other users have noted the same issue with CS5 not working in the OS 10.6.8 environment. I don't want to upgrade my OS just to have Lightroom function, but none the CS apps. I was thinking of partitioning my HD to load both OS, but that shouldn't be the workaround. I am very disappointed that I've purchased Lightroom 4 and now am unable to use it due to compatibility issues with the OS with the rest of CS5.0.

Pixelzboy are you receiving any specific errors when launching your applications under 10.6.8?  CS5 should work just fine with 10.6.8 as well as 10.7.3.  You may also want to post to the product specific forums with your launch errors as the users in those forums will be more familiar with troubleshooting steps specific to those products.

  • Why is external hard drive read-only on one Mac, but read/write on another?

I have a Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive.  I bought it to be compatible with both Windows and Mac, which it currently is.  It works just fine on my PC and my MacBook.  However, recently, I bought a MacBook Pro.  The Seagate drive shows up as read only on the MacBook Pro, though it is read/write on my MacBook.  It's formatted NTFS, yes, but it already works on my MacBook.  What's going on here?

Nope, one of the selling points of the drive was that it came ready to work with both Mac and Windows (the product description says there is an NTFS drive installed for use on Mac).  No hacking or installing on my part.
But I think I figured it out.  Apparentely, Mavericks comes installed with something that does not allow it to write NTFS no matter what (well, unless you go through a whole bunch of technical stuff to rewrite the software).  My old MacBook was Leopard.
I'll just reformat the external hard drive for Mac, and if I ever need to use it on a Windows, I'll install HFS+ Explorer on the Windows.  Oh well.

  • How to back up one mac to an external using another mac

I want to back up my old MacBook Pro onto an external hard drive. The old MacBook Pro is bad shape, hard to use in normal mode. The apple store genius told me I could use my new MacBook Air as a conduit for this back up. I purchased a FireWire cable with a Thunderbolt adapter for this purpose. I was attempting to use Migration Assistant to accomplish this back up, putting the old MacBook Pro in Target Disk mode, but from what I've read on these forums, mainly this article: Mac OS X v10.6: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac, it doesn't seem possible to back up onto an external given the options I am given in the process. So my question is (A) how do I back up one macbook in target disk mode onto an external using a second macbook as a conduit, and (B) is it possible to simply back up the old MacBook Pro while in Target Disk or Safe modes? Thanks so much for any help.

I've not tried using Migration Assistant before so i'm not sure on that. But if you put the old Mac in Target Disk mode and connect the working Mac to that it should show as an external drive, then connect your external HDD to the working Mac, open both drives and simply copy the data over or use your favourite backup software to do it.

  • Printer on one Mac; need to print from another

My USB printers are connected to my iMac. I want to be able to print from my Macbook. My have a Time Capsule as my WAP. I also have Ethernet running thru the house. How can I print from the Macbook?

    DesertRatR wrote:
Worked like a charm. I can print to the one printer just fine. Nothing happens when I try the other one. Could it be that the second one needs a new driver to work with Bonjour?
On the iMac, Go to System Preferences > Sharing > click on the printer Sharing service. Look at the window to the right and see if both printers are shared. The furthest rightmost window should show the users that it can be shared with.
If the iMac sees the printer than you should be able to share it.
Gotta love Apple. Everything seems to just work! Because of a very unpleasant Vista experience a couple of years ago I switched the family to Macbooks. I've gone from being a "what's wrong with Windows? - I like it because I get to tinker a lot" to a confirmed Mac lover because everything just works. My IT skills are getting rusty, since there isn't a lot to fix.
I hear ya. I made that switch and never looked back.

  • I have logic studio, which has to serial number installs,  can i deactivate logic on one mac to put it on another ( assuming it has already been installed twice)

I want to put logic on my new computer but i already have used my two installs, can Is there a way to deactivate one of the installs so that i can install it on my new mac?

You don't have to deactivate it, just don't launch it at the same time on the other machine.

  • I want to bring one mac up to date with another

I have two macs in two different houses. One in a holiday home.
I use time capsule for my backups and take this with me when we are in the second home.
From reading various articles I understand that I need to use Migration assistant to transfer data from the Time Capsule to the second mac.
As the second mac is only six months behind the first a lot of the data will be the same.
Will using Migration assistant to transfer data duplicate the data already on the second mac when I try to bring it up to date.
I hope this is clear but if not can somebody help me and put me straight on this.
    Thanks in advance
    joshe.

    Hi Linc.
Sorry for the delay in responding.
I am not quite following you.
If I create a new administrator account and then use Migration Assistant to transfer data from my first Mac using Time Capsule, will I not have to transfer all the data which will still give me the problem of duplication on the second Mac.
Perhaps I would be better off formatting the second Mac and then restoring from the Time Capsule which will be up to date.
Sorry to question your advice but hope you can help.
    Thanks again.

  • Is it possible to sync an iPhone to one mac for music only and another mac for everything else? What about shared iPhoto?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to manage my iphone and that of my wife.
Our set up is that we share music that is on my imac under my apple store id.  We also like to have all of our photos in iphoto on that imac.
She has her own macbook and I'd like to use icloud to sink her personal bookmarks, calendar and other stuff.
I've thought about seeing if I could set her phone up to sync with icloud as appropriate, turn on wireless sync on her imac for syncing everything but music, then sync that same iphone on the imact but just sync music.
I've tried to point her macbook to my imac itunes library and that doesn't seem to be working very well.
The other wrinkle is that she is taking photos on her iphone that I'd like to show up in our shared iphoto library and photo stream.  Currently we have our individual icloud apple ids so we may sync our own bookmarks and such and we use a separate "store" id for music and apps and such.  I'm not sure I see a way for me to merge iphotos into a shared library/stream?
    1.  Any thoughts on the best way to manage two iphones, each with their own computer, but a shared music library?
    2. Any thoughts on the best way to merge iphoto?
I've been experimenting with setups and I have a feeling folks with more experience have probably worked this out better than the way I'm thinking of doing.
    Thanks.

  • How do I move photos from the library of one MAC to the library of another MAC?

I have down loaded over 500 picture from a recent vacation to my MacBook I-Photo Library.  Now I want to duplicate those photos on my family's main IMac.  How do I move those photos from the MacBook I-Photo Library to the iMac I-Photo library?
    Thanks,

There's another app that can move photos between libraries (but not keywords or other metadata): SyncPhotos
    Here's how it works:
    1 - it compares the databases and/or album.xml files of Libraries A and B.
2 - the files in A that are not in B are imported into B by copying the original files from A into B's Import folder.
3 - it then does the same for B.
4 - metadata is not copied.
It can be used to just copy from A to B and not sync both ways if desired. It will work with 2 libraries that are different versions, i.e. between an iPhoto 08 and iPhoto 09 library.

  • Download content on one mac can i reuse for another?

Where is the downloaded content for the latest GB located?
    can I reuse it?

No I haven't tried that. What might that do?
It will download about 5 GB of additional content that has been previously purchased. You can continue working with GarageBand, while the download proceeds, and if you interrupt it, it will resume the next time you start GarageBand.

  • Can you Upload music on one MAC then transfer it to another?

I just got my nano today and i have two macs, a g5 and a macbook, i want to know if i can upload the music from my g5 put it on to my new nano and then charge and organize my music on my macbook.... PLEASE help!!!

    Yes you can:

How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer (Video Tutorial)
Also there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists directly from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. I use Senuti but check the others out and choose whichever you are happy with.
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    iPod.iTunes Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only

    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions

  • Saving project on one mac and moving it to another

I saved a project on a macbook with '08 and tried to transfer it via a usb thumb drive and when i plug it into my imac with '09, it says that the file type isn't supported and then an abort button. What can I do?

    Tyler Parker wrote:
    It is MS-DOS (FAT).
that would be the problem, GB projets are in a format specific to a mac formatted volume.
Should I reformat to avoid this kind of problem again?
    yes
WIll I be able to use it on both Mac and PC if I do reformat?
no, i do not believe so. macs can read windows formats, but windows can't read mac formats without third party software of some kind
you'd probably be better off getting another inexpensive thumb drive to use on the windows boxes (here's a 4 GB drive for around $13)

  • Editing files on one mac that are stored on another

I have two macs with Lion on my LAN. I want to be able to open and edit files on each from the other and then save the changes to the original store. I seem to be told that I don't have permission to do that. How can I fix this?
    TIA,
    David

I changed the permissions of the original store (my iMac) on the Macbook Pro as you described. When I attempted to close the app on the MBP, I got the msg 'The document XXXX is on a volume that does not support permanent version storage'.
Is this problem related to Lion's save and version features? FYI, that app in question is Keynote so you'd think it'd be fully up-to-date on Lion's features.
