Pc keymap/ deadkeys on mac

Hello!
does anyone know how to change the mac's keyboard to a pc one? I'm used to typing accents on a pc, and i type blind. The big advantage of a pc keyboard is obviously that you dont have to push two keys at the same time to get an accent. Any ideas anyone?
exp: to get é on a pc, i'd just have to press the ´ and then the e, whereas on a mac its alt+e e. It's not terrible, but it would make things a lot easier.
Thanks!

annamation,
Welcome to Apple discussions.
there is "sticky keys" on the Mac, just like now on windows (but the Mac had it many years before).
It's under Universal Access in the System Preferences.
This would allow you to press Alt then 'e' and then 'e' again.
You may find it more of a pain than anything else.
The only other suggestion is to hunt for a foreign keyboard. French may be what you want. Don't know if it gives you acute accents straight off the keyboard, but I've had to use Spanish keyboards before, it seemed to have everything to hand.

    I would prefer a jeos image but I have not been able to find one.
    I have tried this using the vm server as the nfs server with no success.

    I've got a few OL6 guests up and running on my OVS 2.2.2 servers now. I managed to convert one of them to a PV guest by hacking together a vm.cfg.
    The dmesg|grep -i xen shows me that the guest kernel is running in paravirt mode.
    My problem is the OVM Manager is still showing this guest as a fully virtualized guest. Is there a better/proper way to convert an HVM guest to PV guest?

  • Paravirtualized OpenSolaris

    Hi, I am wondering if anyone has installed a Paravirtualized OpenSolaris on OVM. I tried to install one using OVM Manager and get the following error:
    "2010-07-28 16:25:08" ERROR=> install_vm_para: vm('/OVS/running_pool/170_osol0906')=><Exception: failed:<Exception: ['virt-install', '--paravirt', '--name=170_osol0906', '--ram=1024', '--vcpus=1', '--vnc', '--vnclisten=0.0.0.0', '--vncpasswd=/tmp/tmptUtbS1', '--noautoconsole', '--location=nfs:172.18.1.19:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906', '--keymap=en-us', '--mac=00:16:3E:1E:45:72', '--bridge=xenbr0', '--file=/var/ovs/mount/23EA2AC5419F42DC8F432422790512BF/running_pool/170_osol0906/System.img', '--file-size=32.0'] => ERROR: Invalid NFS location given: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/lib/xen/xennfs.hr7HbY/images/xen/vmlinuz'
    I can mount the NFS path fine:
    [root@ovm2 ~]# mount 172.18.1.19:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906 /mnt
    [root@ovm2 ~]# ls /mnt
    bin dev jack platform reconfigure save solaris.zlib tmp
    boot devices mnt proc root solarismisc.zlib system
    [root@ovm2 ~]#
    Thanks very much in advance
    Albert

    OK, I was able to trick OVM Manager to create the VM by creating images/xen and copy kernel and macroroot to the directory, then rename them to vmlinuz and initrd.img respectively:
    root@nfs1:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906 $ mkdir -p images/xen
    root@nfs1:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906 $ images/xen
    root@nfs1:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906 $ cp x86.microroot images/xen/initrd.img
    root@nfs1:/sans1/swimages/solaris/osol0906 $ cp unix images/xen/vmlinuz
    However, I got boot loader didn't return any data when power it up:
    2010-07-29 16:41:59.821 WARNING [PowerOn][osol0906]: Result - failed:<Exception: return=>failed:<Exception: ['xm', 'create', '/var/ovs/mount/23EA2AC5419F42DC8F432422790512BF/running_pool/178_osol0906/vm.cfg'] => Error: Boot loader didn't return any data!
    According to http://foss-boss.blogspot.com/2009/06/opensolaris-200906-pv-under-xen-centos5.html, I need to add the following to the installation configuration file:
    extra = "/platform/i86xpv/kernel/amd64/unix - nowin -B install_media=cdrom"
    anyone has idea on how to do that?

  • Problem with Keymaps

    Hi,
    I got a problem with a user-defined keymap. Here is a fragment of my code:
    for (int i = 0; i <= 1; i++) {
    keymap[i] = textField.addKeymap("Bindings" + i, textField.getKeymap());
    prepare_keymap(i);
    textField.setKeymap(keymap[actKeymap]);
    private static void prepare_keymap(int which) {
    if (which == 0) {
    set_keymap(which, KeyEvent.VK_A, 0, "urga", "\u0627");
    set_keymap(which, KeyEvent.VK_A, Event.ALT_MASK, "Alt-A", "\u0625");
    set_keymap(which, 65, Event.CTRL_MASK, "Ctrl-A", "\u0623");
    set_keymap(which, KeyEvent.VK_A, Event.CTRL_MASK + Event.ALT_MASK, "Ctrl-Alt-a", "\u064E");
    else if (which == 1) {
    set_keymap(which, KeyEvent.VK_A, Event.ALT_MASK, "Alt-A", "\u0101");
    private static void set_keymap(int which, int keyEvent, int eventMask, String name, final String code) {
    KeyStroke ks = KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(keyEvent, eventMask);
    Action act = new TextAction(name) {
         public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
              getTextComponent(e).replaceSelection(code);
         keymap[which].addActionForKeyStroke(ks, act);
    The strange thing that happens is: when I press the key "A" WITH metakeys everything works fine, BUT when I press the key "A" WITHOUT any metakeys,
    I get the specified unicode character AND (!!!) an "a".
    Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Dieter

    Does sound like a programming oversight - I would suggest using the feedback link under the Mac OS X tab here at Apple's website. If is an OS level service setting that should be easy enough to fix - if it is an application level issue then every affected app would need to be updated.

  • Grave accents è in Mac OS X 10.4.9

    Since my last update on Mac OS X 10.4.9, I cannot find the way of writing with grave accents <è> as I usually did with my spanish keyboard. My language is Catalan and these accents are used really frequently.
    Anyone knows if it's some configuration stuff or is it a bug of the 10.4.9?
    Thanks in advance,
    guillem
    MacBook Pro 2,0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    You need to go to system preferences/international/input menu and tell us what keyboard layouts you have the boxes checked for. Also you need to make sure the box for "show input menu in finder" is checked so you can see which layout is active via the "flag" menu at the top right. Most likely this has changed from what you are used to, so the normal keys don't work. It is most unlikely that there is a bug causing your problem.
    The top two pictures here show where the grave deadkey is located in the two possible Spanish layouts. In the US layout, the grave deadkey is at Option + top leftmost key.

  • Inkscape won't run on mac 10.7.5

    I have downloaded and properly installed inkscape on my mac. I already have the X11 installed on my computer because it's 10.7.5 and I'm told these models come with X11 already installed. I have already successfully installed and used GIMP in the past, so I know X11 is on my computer and in working order.
    The problem is that when I click on inkscape, the icon pops up and nothing happens. Then I click on the icon in the dock and X11 opens. But then nothing continues to happen. No windows or anything. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and logging out and rebooting, to no avail. I know that the first time inkscape runs it's supposed to take awhile to load fonts and whatnot, but this is taking far too long.
    I'm not much of a computer whiz, so I haven't been able to decipher any of the coding or programs running behind the UI curtain.
    Any help will be much much appreciated.
    Also, if someone could recommend an alternative vector graphics system that works well with mac and is easier to install, that would be great too!

    X does work on its own as far as I can tell. i.e. windows pop up when I click on xman or xlogo.
    This is what shows up on the control panel when I open inkscape:

    Again, I'm not very knowledgable about computers and programming at all, so thanks very much for your reply! Also, I do have X11 but I'm not using Xquartz which I assume is the latest version. The first time I tried installing inkscape, I also downloaded and installed xquartz but I uninstalled both of them when nothing was happening.

  • Norwegian Keymapping for console

    Tonight on irc, ilovebrownies had a question about his/her Norwegian keymap - it wasn't working in the console.  I knew this could be a headache because I've dealt with it - I'm in Finland* but I've also dealt with UK keyboards, French keyboards, German keymaps...
    Unfortunately we just could NOT get the Norwegian keymap to work.  Until, of course, 3 seconds after he/she logged off, whereupon, BOOM, it started working for me.
    So I'm going to write up a guide - eventually - as a form of "here's the why and how so you can choose the way to make it work your way."  Suggestions as to where and 'other places of help' are welcome in that regard.
    But as I've tried to write this 4 times already and just get far too longwinded, and it's getting very late, I will write that up later and for now, leave the immediate answer -
    the "no" keymap doesn't put the ø on the key next to the p.  The other keymap DOES.  However, I had to load the Swedish/Finnish latin6 keymap before it.  I'm not sure why, and I'll look into why tommorrow.  Alternately, the Danish keymaps worked nicely with the alt-gr key.
    (Mind you, ilovebrownies did not want to use the alt-gr key, but he/she wasn't OPPOSED to it, just it wasn't their first choice.)

    what about loadkeys no?
    As mentioned by several folks in this thread, it's the no keymap that (apparently) has issues, which is different from the no-latin1 keymap.  I don't think anyone has had an issue with the latin1 keymap, other than "not liking it."  (To be honest, I don't know what the difference _is_ and that is probably the main issue - myself and others don't really understand what the difference is supposed to be.  On top of that, "not liking no-latin1" is causing folks to _assume_ they'll like "no" and since it doesn't seem to do anything (i.e. it appears to be a "us" keymap, or "the kernel keymap" or similar) folks feel it's "broken."  i.e. "Missing characters."
    If the .no (NOT no-latin1) keymap is a duplicate, should it be removed?  Or is it in some way actually filling a need, but it's confusing for the lot of us who have tried to use it?  (I'd figure the latter.  We just need to know what the heck it's doing.
    (I also don't know where the Norwegian/Danish keys are supposed to be, I have .se/.fi keycaps, and use the us-international-deadkeys map myself, so I really shouldn't be testing this.  My eee pc has bizzarre keycaps of no/dk/se/fi, which in many cases all but cover the keycap, but having shown this to some .no typists they have suggested that those keycaps are "not even close to correct."  But I did open the thread... and I think the initial issue is still "open.")
    For some reason I only got notifications on replies today.  Probably due to the recent upgrade of the forum software. Thus the recent flurry of activity...

  • Pay for upgrade only to use on intel mac?

    I upgraded from FCE 2.0 to FCE 3.0 HD earlier this year (paid $99). I did this mainly because after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) keyboard shortcuts started to crash FCE when using local keymap (finnish). I also thought, that by doing so I would not have to pay so much than for upgrading later to 4.0 or and so on. Usually upgrades tend to be cheaper, if you have more recent version from which to upgrade.
    Now I have new, shiny intel mac (macbook 2GHz) and I'd like to use my FCE HD on it for now on, because I was told that all apple applications were already universal-versions by now. They are indeed, but it seems that only version 3.5 of fce hd is universal, and I would have to upgrade again, only to get the software working again (like last time, when keyboard shortcuts stopped working). However, it seems that upgrade from 2.0->3.5 costs as much as upgrade from 3.0->3.5. So upgraders who have already upgraded once (or even twice for that matter) have to pay the whole upgrade price again. And you can't get universal version of fce hd from software update.
    Is this the way apple is rewarding its loyal customers who actively buy product upgrades? I'm not against paying for upgrades, but i'm not willing to upgrade twice a year only to keep the software i've already paid for running on my computer. I was planning to upgrade again when version 4.0 with serious upgrades comes out, but i'm not going to pay $99 then again, because it seems that upgrade price from 3.0->4.0 or 3.5->4.0 will be the same.
    Meanwhile, I'll seek cheaper sources to keep my paid software running on my mac.

    FCE 3.0 was introduced nearly a year before the Intel Macs and it was never claimed to be a UB version.
    Unfortunately many people bought it thinking it would work on the new machines.
    To be fair to Apple, if you read the small print on the box, you will see that as a system requirement it needs a G4 or G5 processor.
    The poor customer was left to infer that an Intel processor would not work properly.
    Definitely a case of "Caveat Emptor".
    You probably can use FCE if you press the "esc" key whenever, you get the error message.

  • Screen Sharing on "headless" Mac Mini

    Does anyone know how to change the screen size and keymap for a "headless" Mac Mini (no keyboard and monitor), accessed via Screen Sharing?
    Currently:
    - The screen size is limited to 800x600 or 1024x768. I'd like bigger.
    - On the Mac Mini, I have to use the "U.S. Extended" keyboard layout to get the right key mapping from Screen Sharing. But the Login Screen doesn't seem to use this mapping. Also, I live in Switzerland, and I'd like to use international keyboard layouts.
    Info:
    - Mac Mini: OS X 10.4.11
    - Screen Sharing host (iMac): OS X 10.6.8
    - Desired keyboard layout: Swiss French and Swiss German
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the ideas. As suggested, I tried swapping out both the VNC client as well as server, but unfortunately no luck.
    I should have mentioned that if I plug a large monitor into the Mac Mini, I see the bigger screen via Screen Sharing. If I unplug the monitor, the larger size is maintained until I log out; then I'm back to 1024x768. This indicates that its not the VNC (client and/or server) that's limiting the screen size, it's the OS that only provides two choices if no monitor is connected. I don't see why that has to be; it's just the size of the allocated graphics buffer that changes.
    Concerning the keyboard, I found that you can set the Login screen to use the US Extended keyboard layout by selecting System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Options -> Show input menu in login window. That allows you to select the keyboard layout you want to use for the Login prompt, and fortunately that selection is then saved. That significantly defuses the keyboard problem – although ideally, I'd still like to use international keyboard layouts. Logically, this should be something the VNC software controls, but I did not see any options to that effect, in any of the VNC clients and servers suggested above.

  • Macbook pro keymap trouble

    Hi, I've been messing with this for a while but I can't get it right
    as you know, macbook pro's (and macbooks, macs,..) have their own, special keyboard layout.  I want to map the special keys to become more normal (eg right apple key or the key next to it) should become alt-gr, so that i can type | or # by using alt-gr and the appropriate number key, that i can have home and end keys by combining apples "Fn" key with left or right arrow keys, and so on.  And since I'm Belgian, I'ld prefer azerty over querty (on normal computers i use the be-latin1 keymap)
    I would like to have this working in both console mode as in Xorg, so instead of twiddling to much with the XkbLayout settings which only gives results in Xorg, I'm guessing I should rather get a good keymap instead, so I can enjoy that in both worlds?
    Arch includes some mac keymaps in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/mac but when I tried loadkeys mac-be it worked pretty well (I think, I don't want to try it again, read on) but outside Xorg it was a total mess: every key seemed to be mapped to something else, even keys like backspace or enter were mapped to characters like "e" etc, so I couldnt even load another keymap or shutdown the computer, I had to force shutdown (probably corrupting my filesystem).
    On the this page I found another supposedley good working map (this one) but again, outside of X I got different behavior, I couldnt type characters like | or # anymore, the alt-gr key seemed to have become an enter-key, it was querty instead of azerty, ...
    It would be great if anyone could help me with this

    I am using a german qwertz macbook pro core duo .. keyboard map is http://cyanescent.co.uk/mac-de.txt
    the best way to go is to load a similar keymap at boot, then on the console run "dumpkeys > myfile.map" and spend a while customizing the output. use "loadkeys myfile.map" to hoover your file up again. To get the AltGr keys working you need append its keycode to the third column of the base key (so in my map, AltGr 5 maps to 'bracketleft', which can be found on keycode 6); the fourth token maps to the left Apple key. I didn't manage to find maps for shift + AltGr, or Alt though...

  • How can I reinstall Keymap Pro now that Apple owns it?

    Apple:
         I bought Keymap Pro from Redmatica in Feb-Mar (don't remember the actual date). I am now trying to install it onto another Mac. I missed the latest download that the owner (Andrea Gozzi) sent out. Now when I try and install, it continually attempts to contact the server at the Redmatica site and that does not exist. I also can not gain access to the latest version of the software that he sent a link out to. I am at version 2.3.12! Help!!!!

  • Next / Previous media keys don't work on 3rd Party Keyboard, Play/Pause does work. [MAC]

    Hello!
    So I am using a Logitech G710+ keyboard with my Mac (running 10.9) , and the media keys (Play/Pause, Stop, Next and Previous) work perfectly fine with iTunes, even in background.
    Now, when I use Spotify, I usually quit iTunes (to stop conflicts), but only the Play/Pause key seems to work.
    It does work in the background, which is good, but crucially the Next / Previous keys don't work at all.
    Any ideas?

    So I have the exact same issue as everyone else here.  I have a Logitech K750 wireless keyboard running Yosemite on my MBP. I don't necissarily think this issue resides with Spotify, but instead with Logitech.  If I use the media keys on my MBP I am capable of using Next/Previous even when Spotify is in the background.  On the wireless keyboard only Play/Pause and the Volume buttons work.  I think the issue is with the key mapping with the Logitech. Then again, I don't know how the code is written.  Maybe Spotify missed an alternative key map for the media buttons.  I didn't write the code.... The logitech forum is a ghost town for this issue though.  Only post I found was 5 years old. EDIT: With further reasearch I DO believe the problem lies with Spotify.  A tech for Logitech explained to me that Spotify wrote some "interesting" code for the keymap functionality for its Mac client.  A quick Google search shows that it is not only Logitechs experiencing this issue.  It would be great if we could get someone to look into this.  It isn't critical, but it sure would be nice to get fixed.

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter and Mac mini (2009)

    Can anyone tell me whether the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter listed here:
    http://store.apple.com/ca/product/M9319G/A
    works with the latest Mac mini (early 2009)?
    If it does not what other solutions are there to connect to composite, component or s-video?

    KC from Ann Arbor, MI had this to say as a review on the page to which you have linked;
    10-May-2009
    I bought a Mac Mini (May 2009) and this Mini-DVI to Video adapter with plans to use it to send an S-video signal to an analog TV. Though the sales staff at the Apple store said it should work, it does not. The graphics card apparently should support it, and it may be addressed with a future driver update, but as of now this does not work. I have used a mini-DVI to VGA adapter and monitor to verify that the port is working, and also verified that the S-video cable and TV input work. There are third party VGA to S-video/RCA adapters available so I plan to use one of those for my purposes. This is probably a 5-star product when used with the right Mac; however, Apple should have made it clear that having a mini-DVI port on your Mac is necessary but not sufficient for this to work - hence the 3 stars.

  • Multiple Family Members using a MAC

    Hello,
    Can someone give me an overview of how family members all use 1 MAC and ICloud so that each person gets their own "stuff"?  For example, I would like to get my calendar, my songs, my contacts, my apps synced with my devices--iphone and ipad.  And my wife would like her own stuff synced.  Seems pretty fundamental but I could not find any info from Apple.  Is there a way to do this if each person has a separate Apple ID?  What are other people doing?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    If each person has a separate Apple ID, as you stated, it should be no problem. However, i'm not sure exactly how you have your computer set up, if you have separate User accounts set up, or if you just use one User account.
    You should create a separate User account for each family member. Decide if you want those User accounts to be Administrator accounts, or if they are Standard accounts, and set your Parental Controls as desired. You can also find the Parental Controls settings in the System Preferences as well.
    So once each User account is established, you can copy over only the information for them (i.e. contacts, iCal events, iTunes music, etc).
    Set up to sync their iOS devices with iTunes with their information on their User accounts, with their own separate Apple IDs, and everything should work smoothly.

  • Install Windows 8.1 Pro on Mac Mini Late 2014

    I'm trying to install Bootcamp on my Mac Mini.  Windows reports that it cannot install or create a partition on the drive after formatting the BOOTCAMP partition as NTFS.
    This is my setup:
    1. Mac Mini Late 2014 with 2TB Fusion Drive.
    2. Windows 8.1 Pro x64 full version ISO downloaded from Microsoft Store.
    3. Sandisk Extreme Flash Drive (I have tried both 16GB and 64GB).
    4. Bootcamp partition = 500GB.
    5. Other USB devices plugged in: Corded USB Mouse and Apple Extended Keyboard (both of which are required to enter the serial number and navigate the installer window).
    6. No additional storage devices of any kind are connected aside from the internal Fusion drive and the installer drive.
    7. Booting from the EFI portion of the Bootcamp created Windows installer.
    I have read that I should try using a USB 2 flash drive rather than a USB 3 flash drive, so I will try that next.  I fail to understand how this could make any difference.
    If you have any other tips, please let me know.
    I have installed or helped other people install bootcamp many times over the course of the past 2 years.  Every single time it has caused endless headaches and literally weeks of wasted time.
    I have read endless posts on what is causing these problems.  I will consider summarising these for anyone else having the same problems.  Everyone has their theory so far about this Bootcamp nightmare, but so far there doesn't appear to be any one magic solution.
    Apple's inability to address the issue suggests that the problem may be with the Windows installer.  Perhaps Microsoft is deliberately causing this?
    I suspect the two most likely causes of these issues are the downloaded ISO or the Thumb Drive.
    If you have any better idea, please let me know.
    On another topic, how to I rename the NTFS partition back to BOOTCAMP?  All options to rename this partition are greyed out in Disk Utility...
    Cheers,
    Paul

    The FAT32/NTFS partition is usually not adequate for an EFI install. You can delete the BCA-created partition and create a Disk Utility partition which is formatted as Free Space. This will be split into an MSR and MSD. Fusion drives create problems, especially if the BC partition lies outside the traditional MBR 2TB boundary.
    Before you delete the BCA-created partition, please post the output of
    diskutil list
    diskutil cs list
    sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
    sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

    Windows installers up to W8.1 do not have USB3 drivers. These are installed after Windows is installed and BC drivers are in place.

    The requirements are pretty strict when installing Windows. Any deviations cause headaches and grief.

    The USB is usually the issue.

    After Windows is fully installed and BC drivers are in place, log into Windows, right click on it and rename it on the Windows side. It cannot be renamed on the OSX side with diskutil renameVolume. Here is an example sequence. You cannot rename volume during the installation process.
