PC Laptop Build, Print Designer

Sorry, I know this question is done to death but I'm only seeing Editing builds. This is strictly a work computer.
I'm an entertainment marketing print designer - heavy photoshop & InDesign (if there is such a thing) are the primaries. I plan to pick up the Master Collection for CS6 (Win 7 Pro), so I can start playing around with After Effects (the price difference btwn the Design Prem & Master is just over $400).
I will be migrating from the Mac to a PC for work abroad & once there will pick up a monitor. Just a note, I did this a year and a half ago with a custom MBP (BTO from Apple) & it was a dog; if it wasn't for the Sata adapter & ext Raid, it would of been an oversized paper weight. This will be my 1st PC laptop. I've been researching for about a week now but still need input as I don't want overkill in cost or components but want it to last (have to justify the cost of the laptop). I'll be in Asia, so updating with REAL parts (rather than fakes) will be an issue - thus the build must be done here. I'll also be opting for the over-clocking service in all the configs other than Alienware (which is already included), until I research & learn how to on my own.
I'm looking at 3 different models & will only list the parts that count. Externals can be added later, but for now I want to carry less:
1) Sager NP9150 - $4078
15.6" FHD 16:9 Matte LED Screen w/ 95% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080)
Intel® Ivy Bridge Core™ i7-3920XM
nVidia GeForce GTX 680M 4GB
32GB - DDR3 1600MHz Memory (4 SODIMMS)
(1) 480 GB Intel 520 SSD SATA3
2) Sager NP9170 / Clevo P170EM - $3918
17.3" FHD 16:9 Glossy LED Screen w/ 90% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080)
Intel® Ivy Bridge Core™ i7-3920XM
nVidia GeForce GTX 680M 4GB
16GB - DDR3 1600MHz Memory (4 SODIMMS) (32GB upgrade - $250)
240 GB Intel 520 SSD SATA3 (Primary)
750 GB (w/ 8GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT  Hybrid SATA3 (2 Partitions - Work & Scratch volumes)
3) Alienware m17X - $3532
17.3" WideFHD 60Hz WLED (1920 x 1080)
Intel® Ivy Bridge Core™ i7-3820QM
nVidia GeForce GTX 675M 2GB
32GB - DDR3 1600MHz Memory (4 SODIMMS)
256 GB SSD SATA3
(will install an aftermarket WD HDD Hybrid into bay 2)
Looked (built) at the m18X with the only difference to the m17X, is the i7 3920 & dual 2GB GTX 680 SLI (guessing the above Sager builds of 680 4GB are the same, just different wording), priced at $5787. Looked at an older modael at Fry's, the thing was a monster, would have to buy a new custom backpack just to fit it. Don't think I want to carry one of those into Asia. Like a painted target.

I like your Sager #2, and have an older version of that laptop, except that I went with the 3x SATA II HDD's (250GB was the max then), and only 4GB RAM, as I was running XP-Pro (Vista was the current OS then). Also, SSD's were just being released, were tiny and very expensive, so I never considered one, plus Sager did not offer that option. That Sager is still a great computer, and the C/S has been excellent.
If you are not going to be doing any Video, then the 3x HDD I/O might be overkill, and WILL eat battery life. In my case, I use the laptop on location, connected to AC, so that is not an issue for me.
Another supplier, who might be worth looking into is ADK. They do custom workstations for many Adobe products. Their laptops are similar to Sager's, but one does not have to take an "extreme gaming laptop" and then customize it for Adobe programs - ADK does that for you, and do not gaming computers specifically.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Print design and retina mac laptop screen resolution?

print designer here considering buying a retina mac laptop but concerned about the screen resolution and 2x pixels that i keep on reading about. For preparing artwork for PRINTshould i continue preparing my images at 300dpi at 100@ of the final size? thanks so much, claudia.

There are only a couple choices. Either return the monitor for a brand name monitor that is Mac compatible, or use third-party software (DisplayConfigX or SwitchRes X) to make up for the Optiquest's display driver deficiency and configure the required 1280 x 1024 timing manually.

  • I wanted to use an online website as my digital printing/design service

Please recommend me a digital printing / design web site. Or is it really worth doing this? Or I have to seek some other alternatives.
I wanted to start my own digital/printing business like signage and banners and posters. Any advic will help me out.
    Thank you very much.

So, you want to be the middle-man in this venture?  Customer comes to you and wants a trade show banner and a large format poster, you then give an online service all the info and they a.) design the piece for you, and b.) print the pieces for you?  I'm not sure that's a very good idea.  My advice would be look for a brick and mortar location where you can setup your own operation ( i.e., design and printing ).  I know, this is no small task, so start out small with one workstation and one large format printer.  If you, further on down the road, wanted to get adventuresome, then you could build an eCommerce site where customers can go to your site for design and printing.  The problem with using online design and print services are you lose control over the process and if the customer wants to make changes and still keep within the deadline, then things get shaky.  Some online services design but, then they ship the file to Taiwan for printing.  Where's the proofing process in all this?  Let's say everything goes along swimmingly, but then you take delivery of the goods and nothing is the way it should be?  My point is you want to be in control of every step in the process.  Even if you do not want to start up your own physical plant, focus on design and sub the printing to a local source where you can build a relationship and maintain consistency.  You in no way want to wait and see until you get delivery that everything went as planned.  I could be wrong, but what if I'm not?

  • The Folio Builder panel, design-wise...

Part of my job is to teach routined InDesign users how to build Folio's. Most of them do quite well, after their initial confusion with the Interaction panels ("which do and which don't work with ADPS"). But the panel they fear most, is definitely the Folio Builder. Not even because of its casual malfunctioning (that's my nightmare as a trainer), but mainly because of its design and cosmetics. The panel sports a well-know and trusted appearance, but it's a devil in disguise.
It begins with logging-in. "No, you can't click the bull's-eye, it's just a mysterious indicator." It would be much more obvious if it looked like a led (red or green) or if it had some useful interaction to it - letting you log in/out perhaps...
Next, the three-tiered views are not clear enough. When I show them the image below, and tell them how their workflow moves from left to right and from right to left (from "Account" to "Folio" to "Article" to "Layout" and v.v.) they immediately 'get it'. And after warning them that the navigational elements on top of the panel are quite clueless (what to hit, to go where to), and that you're often thrown back from Layout to Folio (skipping Article), they're in charge and on guard. Finally, I tell them that the "New" button magically changes its functionality in each level ("wait for the pop-up!"). It is highly unusual that a side menu shows and hides certain commands in each level. It should list ALL associated commands, and show momentarily unavailable ones grayed out.
This all wouldn't be necessary if the panel would be a bit more self-explanatory. I hope this rant helps to improve its design.

very good. these all need to be addressed. the experience of the folio
builder panel is bad... I have so many ideas of a redesign in my mind, but
I'm not in charge. maybe this thread can turn into a design ideaas for the
    Panel.
    good start, Peter!

Very important is the span column paragraph property which allows to span several columns in a text frame or to split a column in several sub columns.
Very important is the tag feature, which is also important for creating PDFs with unlimited access.
A lot of problems with footnotes and page layout have been solved due to a better text engine. Up to CS5.5 it could happen that a footnote could force a page be empty when a document was opened.
With CS5 rounded frame corners which are editable were introduced.
Object Styles have been completed since CS3.
Content tools to create linked content were introduced. You need only to change the original content (text or image) and all linked content will be updated as any other link. The linked content can be in the same and in any other document.
Since CS5.5 it is much easier to anchor frames in a text flow with the little at the top of a frame symbol.

  • Print/Design Software on Mac

Hey I just bought a new MacBook as in yesterday. I'm also a newbie (Mac user that is). I used Microsoft Publisher A LOT on my PC, is there any compatible print/design software for a Mac (besides Adobe InDesign)? or Can I install MS Publisher using Boot Camp (if that's possible)? Thanks for any suggestions.

*"is there any compatible print/design software for a Mac (besides Adobe InDesign)"*
    No...not without InDesign and PUB2ID: http://www.markzware.com/pub2id/

  • Unable to run Oracle Form Builder from Designer 10g

I am using Windows XP with Oracle Designer 9.0.4.5. From Design Editor, I select Run -> Oracle Forms, nothing happen. I am able to open Form Builder manually (C:\ORACLE\904\bin\ifbld90.exe). After I generated a module (form) from Designer, I have to open the FMB manually from Form Builder. In Designer 9i, I am able to open Form Builder from Designer. Is this a bug for Designer 10g?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Thanks for the response, Suresh,
I believe this is an installation/configuration issue.
I installed Oracle Developer Suite 9.0.4, which includes Form Builder, Report Builder, and Designer. System Path contains the ORACLE_HOME (c:\oracle\904\bin). I am able to start Form Builder from DOS command (ifbld90.exe). I am also able to start Report Builder (rwbuilder.exe) and Designer (des2k61.exe) from DOS. I am able to Run Oracle Report Builder from Designer, but just not Form Builder. I also checked the Windows registry settings and they seem alright to me.
    thanks,
    Jim

  • Building online designer tool

    Hi Gurus,
Just a newby in AIR and Flex environment. I have development
background in Microsoft Technologies (especially web technologies).
I am considering AIR environment for building a designer tool
that should let a user perform the following operations. The basic
question on hand is "Weather its a right tool/environment to build
this kind of application". The feature list is:
1- Should have open (not limiting on height or width) canvas
    as background layer.
2- User shall be able to upload an image on background layer.
3- User shall be able to add layers on above background
    layer.
4- Each layer should let the user add interactive objects
(custom objects MXML+ Action Scripts + Web Services).
5- Each layer should be treatable as composite/individual
    entity
    6- Z-indexing of various layers
    7- Show/hide any layer
8- Transparency for overlapping layer (must be configurable
    for each layer)
9- Save the complete document with all layers in some format
    (preferably in xml format)
Any help or direction is highly appreciated.
    Shahzad

Yes, with a bit of a caveat for #1. The maximum size of a
bitmap is 2880x2880 pixels (but you could display multiple bitmaps
    in a layer if needed).
The Flash display list lends itself pretty naturally to a
layered system (which isn't too surprising since that's essentially
what the Flash Authoring tool does). There's a good description of
the display list in the Programming ActionScript chapter of the
    Flex and Flash docs:
