PC laptop continuously loses connectivity with airport extreme

I use an airport extreme at home and an airport expresses to extend my network. I get perfect connectivity with my macbook pro but with my older Gateway laptop that uses XP, the connection comes and goes making it frustrating to be online with the PC. why is this happening on the PC and not the MacBook and what can I do to correct the problem?
Airport uses version 7.4.2, WPA/WPA2 Personal, 802.11n b/g compatible.
Gateway m505b2, windows XP HE 2002 service pak 3

Recently had a similar problem connecting a friend's PC to my network and thought I would post my fix in order to hopefully help others.
I noticed that everything worked fine when I disabled wireless security, so my problem was a security issue.
I re-enabled security on my router and copied down the first actual HEX key (key 1) instead of just using the password. Then, on the laptop with a Netgear wireless card, instead of selecting to type a password, I opted to use a network key and pasted the actual key, and it worked like a charm.
Maybe it has something to do with aftermarket network cards, but it solved the "network did not assign a network address" problem.
Hope I've helped and not given a useless answer.

  • Regularly lose connection with Airport Extreme

We have our computer network online using an airport extreme (about 4 years old), we also have an airport express that helps to extend our network. We have an issue with the airport regularly dropping our internet signal, basically it just goes offline for no apparent reason and due to the history I'm pretty sure it is the airport and not our cable modem.
To correct this problem I usually just unplug the airport and unplug the cable modem and this usually resolves the problem. I've had this problem in the past, and it got to the point where this no longer fixed the problem. I brought the airport to a mac genius bar and they reset it back to factory settings and that resolved the problem for about two months. Then the problem came back again, and the airport would drop our signal 5+ times a day. Someone suggested changing the channel on which the airport sends its signal. That seemed to help at first, some channels better than others, but again, each channel would lose the signal after a few days and we'd have to go on to resetting it. It's been working reasonably well on channel 8, but not it's gone back to dropping our signal at least once a day, if not 3-4 times a day.
As far as I know the airport is up to date on its firmware (v5.7), airport express v6.3. Any help you can give to correct this really annoying problem would be greatly appreciated.

Try using iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at different points around your house, by performing a simple RF site survey. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. This would be better done if you can use a laptop. Start with the laptop near the base station, note the readings, and then, choose the locations where you will typically use your computers to access the Internet.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from the laptop, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your AirPort. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either the base station or the wireless clients until they are within a 20dB SNR range.

  • Lost wifi connection with Airport Extreme.

Lost wifi connection with Airport Extreme.   When I connect my modem directly to the computer I can access the internet, however as of this morning I am no longer able to access the internet via wifi on my airport extreme.  I have been using  airport extreme for 6 months or more and everything has been working fine.
When I diconnect my  airport extreme and reconnect it I get wifi for 1-2 minutes working fine, but then i lose internet connection.  According to airport Utility everything is setup and connected and working ok, but I still am not able to access any webpages over wifi.

I have the same issue, I'm getting droppeds from wireless constantly

  • Apple TV often drops connection with AirPort Extreme and Express stations

    Here's my setup:
    - Mac Pro in basement office connected to AirPort Extreme (802.11n) station via Ethernet
    - AirPort Extreme station running WPA/WPA2 security and 802.11n (b/g compatible)
    - AirPort Express station across basement room connected to stereo expressly for AirTunes purposes
    - Apple TV and MacBook Pro on house ground floor, both connecting to the network via WiFi
(unless specified, the software and firmware in my devices is all extremely up to date. I write about Apple news for a living so I know when the updates land and install all of them almost immediately)
    Here's what's going wrong:
Since I have one of the first gen Apple TVs with a 40GB hard drive but a 100GB iTunes library, I use streaming almost 100% of the time. The Apple TV can usually connect to my iTunes library for streaming via WiFi, but if the AirPort Express (a b/g device, mind you) is active on the network, the Apple TV and even my MacBook Pro get booted off the network usually between 12-24 hours, if not 48. Sometimes WiFi seems to work itself out and I can get the MacBook Pro back online, sometimes it even needs a full restart, as Mac OS X will start giving me nothing but "there was an error trying to join this network" warnings. Just as frustrating though, the Apple TV getting booted off means I need go through the whole tedious process of connecting it to WiFi again (it doesn't remember the password for some stupid reason), and then manually surfing again through the Sources list just to get back to streaming my media.
What the heck is going on? Is it the kind of security I'm running? Should I try WEP or... none at all? I would try "downgrading" the Extreme station's network type to only b/g (excluding n entirely), but I don't see that option in the radio settings anymore; it's all just flavors 802.11n now. When I set up the AirPort Express to connect to the network just for AirTunes streaming to the stereo, I used the setup wizard that the AirPort Utility provides. Should I attach it a different way? Perhaps manually set it to "participate in a WDS network" or "extend a wireless network?"
Any thoughts or similar experiences are very, very appreciated. My wife and I love this setup, but its unreliability is really getting on my nerves. Thanks in advance.

Firstly, the easiest bit (although I don't believe you need to do this):
I would try "downgrading" the Extreme station's network type to only b/g (excluding n entirely), but I don't see that option in the radio settings anymore
You will get additional settings if you hold down the option key while browsing the radio settings drop down menu.
Moving on: Unfortunately a dropped connections seems to be a problem with umpteen causes and not only is it difficult to troubleshoot with someone in a forum it can also be made even more difficult because many problems are associated with network settings on a router that the person who is trying to help is unfamiliar with.
However you seem to be convinced your problems arise when your express is running which may narrow things down a little if correct, if not it may actually lead us away from the answer to your issue.
Is it the kind of security I'm running? Should I try WEP or... none at all?
I use WPA and have no problems (password = 8 Characters)
Should I attach it a different way? Perhaps manually set it to "participate in a WDS network" or "extend a wireless network?
I have my expresses set to participate in a WDS network, but that's because I use them for other things other than itunes, I would have thought 'join a network' would be fine.
You could check that all your devices are using independent IP addresses and all are using the same subnet. You could also check that no two devices have the same mac address, I've been told a million times this can't happen, but I've seen it. You may be wise to check these things before and after your devices have been 'kicked off the network", you may even want to write them down to see if any are changing.

  • Slow connection with Airport Extreme

Just upgraded my cable modem connection to the very high speed. 6 Mbits download, and 786 Kilobyts upload. 2 Macs connected via Airport Extreme to the cable modem. I am getting the upload speeds, but the download speeds are 2322.04, and 270.744, as an example. Troubleshooting it with the ISP (Adelphia) they say the problem is in the router. Because on a direct connection, bypassing the router I get download speeds of 5147.015, and 4129.464 as an example. They told me to update the router's software which I did to Version 5.7. That did not resolve the speed problems. I am still not doing any better on the speeds. Since the problem seems to be the Airport Extreme router, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

and it worked fine up until a few weeks ago
That would be the time that someone near you likely set up another wireless network that is interfering with your network. If it is any consolation, your network is likely interfering with his as well.
Unfortunately, the bottom line here is that other than experimenting, there is just not much that you can do. A good friend of mine recently moved into a new downtown condominium complex and found that his wireless was virtually unusable due to the number of other networks around him.
The only solution that worked for him was to take an older AirPort Extreme that was capable of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, but not both at once like the newer models, and set up the older AirPort Extreme for 5 GHz only.
ironically, the better antennas in the newer AirPorts provide better wireless coverage, but they are also more susceptible to picking up other signals that may interfere with your network. My opinion on that, based on my experience here with one of the new AirPort Extremes.
I went back to my old AirPort Extreme and while I have a bit less range, things work better.
This is the newest model, do you think the ac vs n connection would have anything to with it?
Most interference issues occur in the 2.4 GHz range, so it is very unlikely that an "ac" connection....which runs at 5 GHz....would be the cause of your issue, since there are very few 5 GHz networks....for now.

  • Latest 7.6.1 firmware broke all Airport Express connections with Airport Extreme

Installed the latest Airport Utility (6.0) last night.  Once installed I ran Airport Utility and saw my 4 Airport Express N's, one Time Capsule, and Airport Extreme needed a firmware update to version 7.6.1.  Installed to all of them, and initially everything came back up-and-running.  All this equipment remains on 24-hours a day, and the four Airport Express are wirelessly joined to the Airport Extreme's wireless network.
This morning the wireless link between the Airport Extreme and all four Airport Express's was broken (flashing amber light on all of them).  Power resets did nothing.  The Time Capsule link was still good; however, the Time Capsule is connected to the Airport Extreme via ethernet.  Visited this forum and saw other folks were having similar problems.
I saw no way of downgrading the Airport Extreme firmware with Airport Utility 6.0, so I downloaded Airport Utility 5.6.  I launched it, and was able to downgrade the Airport Extreme firmware back to version 7.6.  After hard resetting the four Airport Express units, I was able to downgrade their firmware also back to 7.6.  Everything immediately came back online.
Am going to sit this firmware update out until more shelf life exists with it.  I also agree the Airport Utility 6.0 seem to be a less capable step backward.  Why someone thought we need a simpler interface for a "Utility" that resides in the "Utility Folder" is mystifying.

First I've updated my Extreme to 7.6.1, then, the Express.
Everything work fine untill I update the Airport Utility to the new version and rebooted my extreme, then my Express stop working (An can't be detected anymore by the Airport Utility, orange light)
So I took my laptop, plug a network cable between it and my Express (Now I was seeing it in the Airport Utility) and reconfire the wireless network connection between them.
    Hope this Help!

  • Mac G5 drops/loses connection to Airport Extreme wireless base station

When I power up my Mac, it connects normally to the AE wireless base station. After some time (sometimes minutes, sometimes hours) the connection will be lost, although all indications are that it is operating normally, i.e. the AE icon at the top of the screen shows that there is a connection, there are no error messages. The G5 is just not connected to the Internet: the browser won't connect to a Web site, I can't upload or download files to my Web space.
I originally had the problem with a D-Link wireless router so I replaced that with an AE base station. I have replaced that AE base station with a new one (it's the one that looks like a flying saucer) thinking that I might have gotten a faulty one from the factory, I've replaced the original wireless card in the G5 with a ndw Airport Extreme card, I've moved the AE base station into the same room as the G5 (right now it hangs on the wall directly above the G5). I also connect a PC laptop and a MacBook Pro to the Internet via the AE base station and have no problem with either one of them. The G5 and MacBook are running Mac OS X 10.4.10, the PC is running Windows XP.
Also, when I connect the router directly (hardwire) to the G5 it works fine.
The router is a new Siemens Speedstream 4100 (this is also a replacement for the original router).
Since all the equipment in my system has been replaced with the exception of the G5, I assume that the problem lies within the G5.
Perhaps there are settings that can be changed on the G5 to make it more stable in the system, although I have enabled Interference Robustness to no improvement? I am at a loss to come up with a solution. I can't find any literature that addresses this problem specifically. Each time the connection is lost, I have to restart the G5 to get back online which means, of course, saving my data, shutting down all running programs and then restarting. Turning the AE card off and back on does not work.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
    Thank you,
    Don

I could find no solution in the troubleshooting and set up pages. The only thing I couldn't check out was "Hardware access control" since I don't know how to access this control and no instructions that I could find were given as to how to do this.
I ended up hardwiring the G5 directly to the Airport using the Ethernet ports. This is less than ideal since I am required to locate the Airport near the G5, defeating the purpose of having the Airport, at least for the G5. I am still able to connect my PC and MacBook Pro wirelessly, though and, ironically in the case of the PC, have never had any trouble with these. I am still baffled but don't have the time to "play" anymore and at least I have a functioning, if not ideal, system.
I don't see the point in purchasing a new AE, since I have had this same problem throughout with various configurations and pieces of hardware and the problem persists in exactly the same way no matter what I swap out. I recently purchased and installed the latest issue of AE card in the G5. I think the problem is in the G5, either in the configuration or in the hardware.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Loosing and slow connection with Airport Extreme

Hi. Before I start, I hope there are some who suffer the same problem as me.
First of all, I have a problem with my MacBook and Airport Extreme. The Network I created with Airport is getting really slow or unconnected with my MacBook. So I tried to reset both the modem and Airport. Actually, it kinda works, however this problem occurs later.
First time I thought it was the problem with uTorrent that I didn't use uTorrent anymore but it still has a problem.
Because of this **** problem, I have to reset my modem and Airport Extreme several times a day and it really stressed me out. Embarrasingly, I don't even know what the problem is. is ti the problem with My macBook? AirPort Extreme? Modem? No idea..
    I need a help...
P.S. Modem seems working fine since the ethernet is working fine. maybe problem of Airport or MacBook. I think I should go to the Genius Bar but I am afraid that 'Genius' is going to just check once and say 'It has no problem.'

I too am having very slow connection speed issues with two of my white macbooks, both running 10.6.2, same airport extreme wireless adapter (built in). The strange thing is, these two macbooks came in a macbook 5-pack, and the 3 other laptops all have excellent speed. Nothing different has been done with these 2 laptops - all were updated (albeit the 2 were much slower to download the update), with nothing new installed otherwise...
There were some Macbooks that had an issue with the screws holding their internal AirPort cards in place loosening, resulting in noise and lower signal levels from the antennas.
You may want to try taking one of the affected Macbooks to a local Apple Store and see if you experience the same issues on their in-store network.

  • HP laptop can't connect to AirPort Extreme

My dad has an HP laptop with an 802.11G wifi card. When I enabled AirPort Disk and restarted the router, the laptop came up with a "Limited or no connectivity" error. I tried resetting the network, unplugging the router, and even extending it with an AirPort Express I own. The range without the Express is good, but the laptop can't connect. And I checked the logs and from what I can tell, the issue is on the laptop's end. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check the encryption protocol of your network as well as the Radio mode (n with b/g compatibility). You need to select one of the protocols which is available on your laptop (e.g. WEP). I can't recall exactly, but I don't believe SP1 has WPA. WEP isn't as secure, though.

  • Mail continually loses connection with POP server

I have Apple Mail configured to check two different POP accounts and one GMAIL account.  On one of the two POP accounts, and on the GMAIL account, there is generally no problem.  But for the other POP account, Mail continually loses the connection, such that often when I check Mail a popup box says:
    "Unable to Receive Mail
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Ceccam” or try again.
The server returned the error: The server “mail.ceccam.org.mx” cannot be contacted on port 110."
If I open the connection doctor, it shows no connection with "Ceccam." Clicking "check again" does not help.
The only thing that works, is to close and then re-open Mail, after which it successfully connects to "Ceccam" and manages to check the mail there several times, before losing the connection again, after which I need to close and re-open Mail again.  This is driving me crazy.
I have both of my POP accounts configured the same way in Mail.  So why does Mail continually lose the connection to one of them, and never lose the connection to the other?
Can anybody suggest how to solve this?
    Thank you.
PS This problem only cropped up after I upgraded to Mavericks.

The saga continues... my patience is getting very thin. I've spent hours trying to get this to work and am now naming the companies involved.
I since the issue might be due to the SIM card, I went to an Orange (the service provider) in question to get a new SIM. They gave me a new one in 5 minutes. On putting in the phone, all appeared to work for a while (I could makeand receive calls), then the phone reported "Invalid SIM". It found the network again on a reboot, then a short while later the message Invalid SIM appeared again.
A call to Orange said that the card had not been fully initialised. So I turn off the phone, Orange make some kind of tweak on their side, and tell me to turn on the phone again. It finds the network - but not for long, a couple of hours later, it reports "Invalid SIM" again.
Another call to Orange, who tell me the phone may be defective, it cannot reliably read the SIM card. Normally they would replace the phone, but since I bought it from the The Phone House, it's not their responsibility. So the phone house directs me to Orange, and Orange directs me to an Apple store.
Apple - you are my last hope.

  • Cordless phone on separate line kills AOL connection with Airport Extreme

I lose my AOL connection everytime I get a phone call. My cordless phone is a panasonic 2.4Ghz gigarange extreme connected to a separate line. How can I change settings on either Airport Extreme or the cordless phone to fix this?
    Thanks,
    [email protected]

I'm not sure if it would adequately help your problem, but you might try separating the channels of the AEBS & phone (setting the AEBS on ch. 11 and the phone on ch. 1).

  • Loosing connections with airport extreme

I installed a new Airport Extreme at my house. (w ehave Tme Warner cable internet service - to high speed 50Mbps version). After I set it up everythign worked fine for a short while, but withing about 30 minutes Skype on an current iMac connected via Ethernet cable would drop and reconnect to the point that it became unusable. A Mac Book Pro on wifi initially had trouble establishin Internet connections (as apposed to wifi connections)  but once it could they also degraded in stablity over a periond fo a few hours. I reset the cable modem, the Airport unit and rebooted our Mac's. The issue persisted.  I switched back to my older Airport (about 3 years old) and everything worked fine.  We are using a current iMac desktop and an 18 month old 17in Mac Book Pro.  Both running Mountain Lion with current patches.
Any suggestion as to why the Airport Extreme would not be able to provide stable network connections and have degrading service over time ( several hours).

There may be something else you can try...
I had similar issues with my WET610N droppoing connections.  I monitored the Event Viewer on my PC and saw that at approximately 1 hour intervals the adapter would show as disconnected.  When I watched the WET610N it had dropped it's wireless connection.  Sometime the disconnections were only minutes apart and although the WET610N always rebuilt the connection it's obviously a problem for streaming / downloading.
I didn't want to drop from WPA2 to WEP, so I changed my Beacon setting on my D-Link router from 100 to 50.  I've now had a connection running for 4 days solid without a single drop.
Worth a try for anyone still having issues...

  • Retina MacBook Pro is not connecting with Airport Extreme 5 GHz signal

I believe I have done my due diligence to find the answer to my question here and other places but I must be missing it. I have a Retina MacBook Pro that as far as I know should select the 5 GHz signal from my Airport Extreme (Generation 1 with 7.6.4 firmware) which is literally 3 ft. from my computer. When I click on the Airport icon in the menu bar, it is indicating a 2.4 GHz connection. I have looked at discussions which say I can give separate names to to both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals. I can't seem to find that. I also read where you can reorder the order of signal preference. I can't seem to find that either. Interestingly, I have an Airport Express that is extending the network. When option clicking on its icon in airport utility, I can see both the 2.4 and 5 GHz information. I don't se that in the Airport Extreme. I am thinking about gettng the newest Airport Extreme but if I don't need to...
    Thanks for any help!

as far as I know should select the 5 GHz signal from my Airport Extreme (Generation 1 with 7.6.4 firmware) which is literally 3 ft. from my computer
A Generation 1 AirPort Extreme is not a simultaneous dual band wireless router. It can produce either a 2.4 GHz....or....a 5 GHz wireless network signal, but not both simultaneously.
If you want the Gen 1 Extreme to produce and deliver a 5 GHz wireless network, it can do so, but any 2.4 GHz devices that you have will not be able to connect to the 5 GHz signal.
A new simultaneous dual band AirPort Extreme will produce both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simultaneously. Wireless devices will automatically connect to the best signal quality based on their capabilities and location in relation to the AirPort Extreme.

  • Windows XP system not getting good connection with Airport Extreme

I just moved into a house that already has a Mac system with an apple wireless network. The airport extreme router is in the very next room no more than 15 feet away from my PC and I am getting "very poor connection" according to XP. Is there a compatability issue with XP and the Airport router. I have tried everything including getting the latest drivers from the D-link website and I am still getting extremely bad connectivity. I didnt think wireless networking would be this problematic. Let me know if any of you have had issues with this.

This will only be true when using the D-Link Router which uses 108G Mimo technology, otherwise it will only work at 802.11g speeds.

    No
The Airport router is a wifi certified 802.11g wireless router and any wifi certified 802.11b or 802.11g client will be able to connect regardless of who it is made by.
It should be noted that the D-Link device is not wifi certified!
