PC Laptop Has Limited Access on My Airport Express

I live on the third floor above a restaurant and I've allowed the owner downstairs to use my wireless connection. She is using a Dell laptop running Vista SP1.
She can connect, but she gets a message saying "connected with limited access" and apparently she gets disconnected after about ten minutes. Any ideas why this might be happening?

Hello Noely D. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Most likely, the wireless signal strength that is received by the PC downstairs it too weak to maintain or even create a connection.
I suggest downloading a copy of iStumbler. Use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at the locations where Internet access is desired. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. Start with your MacBook Pro near the base station, note the readings, and then, choose the downstairs location of the PC.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from the MBP, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
SNR Guideline
o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your AirPort. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either the base station or the wireless clients until they are within a 20dB SNR range.

I have an old Airport Express streaming iTunes to a Bose Wave Radio. I wanted to change the name, but it requires Airport Utility 5.6 and that isn't supported by Mavericks. How do I access my old airport express with a computer on OSX 9?

Yes, if you are running Tiger 10.4.x and have AirPort Utility 5.4.2 installed.

  • Time Capsule is Slower and has a Weaker Signal than Airport Express

I have been using an airport express (g) without any problems for several years and usually get full signal strength throughout my small manhattan apartment. I recently decided to upgrade to a Time Capsule. I set it up and found that signal was weak and data transfer was slow. After rebooting it and installing the firmware update, things did not get any better. I took my laptop and TC to the Apple Store and they set it up again for me. In the Apple store, I found that the connection was strong and that the data was extremely fast. When I brought the unit back, I was only able to connect with a few bars (4) and found the data transfers to be extremely slow, practically unusable. I'm not sure what to do, I think there's something interfering with the signal but then again, I put the TC right where the old AirPort Express used to deliver a strong (full) signal.
    Any suggestions?

I set the Time Capsule to channel 11 from automatic. Since then, the Time Capsule has been working perfectly. I love it.

  • Can't communicate/access/find/etc Airport Express

I have a spare Airport Express that I wanted to use to extend the wireless signal in our new house. I haven't used it in about a year, but it was working before I put it away as far as I remember.
When plugging it in, it briefly shows a green light, goes out, and then shows a steady yellow light. Once in a while it briefly turns to green then back to yellow immediately.
It does not put out any WiFi signal.
If I plug in an ethernet cable and try to run Airport Utility with it plugged into ethernet, my network settings say either "No IP Address" or that there is no device at the other end of my ethernet cable.
I have tried to reset it about 1000 times. While plugged in I hold down Reset for 10 seconds (light blinking yellow) and I have also tried unplugging it, holding down reset, then plugging it back in and holding it again.
Basically, I have no way of accessing it at all.
On any normal day I'd cut my losses and go buy a new one, but money is tight the next couple of months so I'd really like to get this thing working any way possible.

    Thanks for the reply Bob!
I didn't have a hacksaw handy, but my wife did have a dremel with a cutting disc
Here was our adventure, delving into the internals of our Airport Express:

  • Preventing outside access for my Airport Express A1264 wireless hub

I am new to Mac and to the Airport Express model A1264 wireless hub?. How do I set it up so that I am protected from other people accessing my computer?
    thanks!
    David

Hello David Carey1. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The #1 way to prevent "uninvited" guests from accessing your wireless network is to employ wireless encryption. I suggest using the strongest available for your AirPort Express Base Station (AX), which is "WPA2 Personal." Also use a strong password - a password that contains both characters, numbers & symbols and cannot easily be found in a dictionary.

  • Unable to access internet via Airport Express

Hi. I'm have trouble connecting to the internet using my Airport Express.
When I plug in my DSL modem to the unit, I get the solid green light. My Macbook is able to connect to the airport, and to other computers on the same Airport.
However, none of my computers are able to reach any internet sites. They were even unable to directly ping a remote IP address. However, if I plug my DSL modem directly into my Macbook, bypassing the Airport, it correctly connects to the internet, which leads me to believe the problem is with my Airport.
A couple of oddities which I don't know if they are normal. First, in my MacBook's network prefs, the DNS box is blank. However, I'm connected via DHCP, so I didn't know if that'd matter. In the airport configuration app, under internet, it's also using DHCP, but the box is empty, with the same address as the router (192.168.1.1) greyed out next to it. The IP address is 192.168.1.5. This number is rather different than when I connect to my DSL router directly on my MacBook.
I'm running what I believe to be the newest firmware (6.3).
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks,
    Nathaniel

    Hi,
I solved the problem using the airport express firmware 6.1.1. and erasing all favourites networks in network pref panel to create new ones. You may also check the keychains utility (applications -> utilities). If there is several times the same pass, just keep the latest and erase the others.
    Hope my english is understandable...

  • Trouble accessing DHCP on Airport Express

    Config:
    Two powerbooks running 10.3.9.
Cable modem (comcast/surfboard) feeding a four-port ethernet switch.
One cable out of the switch to an Airport Express (with a powerbook connected via wifi), one out directly to a Titanium pbook.
The AE gets an IP from comcast no problem, and the wifi-connected pbook gets an IP address from the AE DHCP(/NAT) server no problem.
But the ethernet-connected tbook cannot seem to get an IP from the AE DHCP server. Does the "self-assigned IP" thing.
I've plugged things in every which from sunday. Unplug AE from the switch, and the enet-connected tbook gets an IP from comcast's DHCP server no problem.
But it can't seem to get one from the AE DHCP server.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, Alan, for your prompt reply.
You cannot use the Express's DHCP server for the TiBook
    in that configuration.
Are you sure about that? My previous airport (the original) worked great this way until it died. And the Airport Admin Utility sez (while configging NAT/DHCP on the current AE), "NAT and DHCP will be used to share a single IP address. ... The base station will act as a bridge between the Airport and local Ethernet network."
    Ooops, just found this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108038#4
"Depending on how you have it set up, the Ethernet port can function as a LAN port (defined as either simple bridging or sharing your Internet connection via network address translation) or a WAN port (connecting to your broadband Internet service provider or upstream router). However, it never acts as both simultaneously in the way that the original AirPort Base Station (Graphite) can. When the AirPort Express is using network address translation, the Ethernet port acts as a WAN port. When it is set up as a WDS remote station, it can act as a LAN port. Assuming that your Internet service provider only gives you one IP address (the most common scenario for homes), this means that AirPort Express can only accommodate wired clients when acting as a WDS remote base station or bridge. Therefore, if you need to support wired clients and only want to get one base station (or router, as it's the routing capacity of AirPort Express that is relevant here), you should get the AirPort Extreme Base Station instead."
Sigh. What a pain. Config software message is just plain wrong.
I bought the AE instead of a cheap linksys/whatever because I figured it would be an Apple slam dunk, as usual. To find this obscure but fatal (and--no doubt--marketing-driven) restriction hidden away is damned annoying.
I doubt I can find the receipt for the AE, so, craigslist here we come...
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • ITunes 7 Can't Access AirTunes with Airport Express

After upgrading to iTunes 7 I can't no longer play music through my Airport Express. It worked fine in iTunes 6. It shows up in the pull-down menu, but I can't select it.
On another machine that already had my APE selected, I now get a message "None of the selected remote speakers could be found on your network. Please configure your network settings and AirTunes configuration..."
    Any ideas??

You have to make sure IPv6 is turned on in the Network System Preference panel. System Preferences -> Network -> Airport -> TCP/IP -> Configure IPv6 -> Automatically.

  • HT5022 I can't install a version of 5.6 alongside 6.2, so no access to legacy airport express

according to apple, you can have both 5.6 and 6.0 side by side. 5.6 for the older airport express, and 6.2 for newer devices. But I can't install 5.6 and 6.2 won't control or modify the older airport express's. Any thoughts?

I cannot find any version of AirPort Utility 6.2 on the Apple Support site.  Do you mean AirPort Utility 6.1 here?
Please check to make sure that you are downloading AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
You are likely trying to install AirPort Utility 5.6.1....which will only run on Snow Leopard and Leopard.

  • Windows 7 Laptop Has Wireless Access but No Internet Connection

    Dia duit!
Okay, I have been called to the rescue concerning my mother's HP laptop again, and for once I cannot for the life of me resolve the issue.  The machine is running Windows 7 because friends don't let friends run Windows 8.  She has a wireless network
connection, but no internet access when she is in Normal Mode.  However, she does have access in Safe Mode with Networking.  I brought my own laptop over when I came to visit, and it connects to the wireless with no trouble.  My mother has tried
three different web browsers-- Firefox, Chrome, and IE-- so it doesn't seem to be a browser issue.
    WHAT I'VE TRIED THUS FAR:
Naturally, given that it worked in Safe Mode, my first thought was a possible malware infection.  In Safe Mode with Networking, I ran Malwarebytes and Combofix.  Sixteen infections were found and removed, but none of them were particularly nasty.
Afterward I used CCleaner's registry scanner to take care of several registry issues.  I then completely shut down and rebooted the computer back into Normal Mode.  The same issue still persisted.
I then removed and added the wireless network connection under Network and Sharing Center>Manage Wireless Networks.  The laptop still had no internet access.  I toggled the wireless switch off and back on.  No dice.  In desperation
I finally reset the IP and DNS (cmd /c "ipconfig /release" and cmd /c "ipconfig /renew.")  It still didn't fix the problem.
I have never seen this issue when one of the above measures didn't resolve it, so I would be extremely grateful for any advice.

    Hello,
    A few things to try:
    1.  Did you check Device Manager to see if the wireless adapter is listed and is enabled?
    2.  Did you try to un-install the wireless adapter and have the laptop scan for new hardware?
    3.  Is there an icon in the systray for the wireless network connection and if so, what is its state, bars or no bars with the "No" symbol?
    4.  Is Windows or another utility controlling wireless connections?
    5.  Can you hook it up via a wired connection and check HP's site for updated drivers?

  • Can't Add To Access Control List Airport Express

We have both Airport Extreme (2) and Express Base Stations (3) to create a wireless network. On the Extremes I can click the Add button in Access Control in the Airport Admin Utility to add people to the list. On all the Express Base Staions I can edit or delete entries already on the list but can't add any new ones. I can export an Access Control List but not import one. The button is greyed out only the button works. I could add to the lists in the past and I'm not sure when it stopped working. The network structure and settings have not changed. Has anyone heard of this problem?
Aiport Express   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

WDS is used on two Express units to relay the signal from the main base station but not on third one which is connected directly to the network via ethernet.
On the internet connected Express the Airport Network setting is:
Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network (Home Router)
All base stations have the same name to allow roaming.
    Internet is connected using Ethernet.

  • Where's iPhone's ID for MAC Access Control on Airport Express?

I'm running Apple Express (NOT Extreme) base station v5.5.1, & require Access Control on 802.11g network. Yeah, this kinda had me going as well...at first I couldn't figure out where in the world was the MAC address for this iPhone! I check the iPhone, the box, online everything everywhere! I just happened to be in the Settings and went to About this iPhone...and Blam! there it was!!! Be sure and use the ID for WiFi. MAC Access Control is a great safeguard, though many say people can "spoof" MAC IDs. I haven't seen it and am not sure how it would be done.

  • Apple Airport Express and PC Laptops - Wireless Network Help

    Hello all,
I have two Wi-Fi enabled laptops running Windows XP, an Apple Airport Express unit and a Netgear DG-632 Modem/Router.
At present the DG-632 is running in modem mode and is connected to one laptop using the ethernet connection. The Netgear DG-632 Modem/Router has one ethernet connection and one USB connection.
My understanding is that if i run one laptop off the USB connection on the Modem/Router and connect the the DG-632 to the ethernet connection then the laptop on USB has to be turned on for the second laptop to access the wireless network.
Assuming the above is true (i am very likely wrong), it would be nice if both laptops were able to access the internet wirelessly via the Airpot Express Unit.
However, being a complete novice at networking, i am little confused about how to do this?
Any help, tutorials or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
