PC-MAC migration Passwords?

Hi,
I recently bought a new MacBook Pro. I transferred all my data from my old PC to the MacBook using the Migration assistant. After that I signed in with my AppleID. Beneath that it had a box saying "Allow this AppleID to change the password of this computer". It was checked, and I hit "CONTINUE". After finishing the set up I tried to change the password of my user account (as I am prompted to do, as the old one has "expired"). I typed in my old user account's password, my new one, verified that and typed in a hint. However I am denied access to the computer ("the box shakes"). I have certainly checked spelling/typing several times, and I have not changed my password (the old one) using my AppleID (I do not think it could ave done this all by "itself"? Generated one randomly?). I can't get into my account, unsing my old password either, so....some help would be helpful!

Evelyn,
Here is a link that may help you, Lion Setup Assistant tips. You didn't mention how the connection is being made between the two machines. If you are attempting to do this wirelessly then that could be the problem. I'd recommend a FireWire connection for the quickest and most reliable solution. If your PC only has FireWire 400 then you will need a cable like this one from Amazon. These can be found at Radio Shack, your local computer store, Walmart, Best Buy and of course Amazon.
If you continue to have issues then contact AppleCare, you have 90 days of free telephone support. You can also purchase AppleCare which will extend your warranty to 3 years from the original date of purchase and include 3 years of phone support. It's strongly recommended.
Finally as a recent switcher I would recommend you book mark and use the following links. While using a Mac is easy making the transition and unlearning old habits sometimes can be challenging.

  • How do you get password on old .mac account that has been changed? For some reason my iphone updates wants old mac acct password.  Can I change that to new one I've had for years?

Years and years ago when I paid for an email address with mac.com I opened my itunes account and all.  After getting tired of paying for an email account I made a new one, which I can't remember but I thought I changed it, but obviously the .mac stayed on.  My itunes is a gmail account and I have no problems there.  But today when I updated my iphone, after downloading, iphone asked me to enter password for the .mac account.  Well I have no idea what that is now.  I don't know how to even retrieve it.  I can't find the settings to change it over to my gmail account either on my phone.  I go to itunes and it has the gmail account listed, but when trying to activate some things that involved the update, it still asks for .mac account password.  I'm beginning to think this is why I can't get authorization on some of my itune songs to play, they keep saying can't authorize when I am still within the 5 computer limit.  I think I'm going to get a Droid...

    its very specific.
If you are seeing the old Apple ID with regard to this Mac, then it would seem that somehow you have incorporated the ID in the setup of this new Mac.
Iphoto i use never used imovie.
If you began using iPhoto without having Accepted it into your Apple ID, then that would explain why you are unable to update the app. If any of the iLife apps are used without Accepting them into your Apple ID, the ability to accept them will lapse and you will not be able to update them.

I know my Apple Id (it isn't ".mac") and password but I can't log on to ichat.  I keep getting a message of password not matched.  I saw somewhere that my Apple id is the same as my ichat account.  Do I need to create a new account for Ichat?  I've already reset my Apple id password 3 times in the last 2 days.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
At one time only Email IDs from Apple (when it was just @Mac.com) were referred to as "Apple IDs"
Other IDs such as to log in to Discussions were know as Discussion IDs
Things like the Online Store and iTunes and Apple realising that people would prefer one ID to have access to Everything tended to move things together.
There can be a variety of combos now
    iChat Name
    @mac.com before MobileMe
    @mac.com post MobileMe
    AIM Names

  • Bought a new Mac, migrated data, now CS4 doesn't work. Why?

I bought a new Mac, had the Apple guys migrate my data and apps to it. Now CS4 doesn't work.
I researched a bit and found that I SHOULD have deactivated and uninstalled CS4 from my old Mac. I've now done that.
But do I have to uninstall CS4 files from my new Mac now--and reinstall? Will that work?

    Hi,
I have a question related to one you answered above: "bought a new Mac, migrated data, now CS4 doesn't work."
My situation is a little different. I am hoping you can help me with it. I hope I am not violating any protocols by asking you specifically?  A year ago I reinstalled my Mac's operating system. My CS4 is on my computer under "Previous System." I am unable to open it from there and I do not want to attempt migrating it for reasons noted above. I did try to reinstall it as you suggested to hbrady67 by dowloading from CS4 products with my serial number but I got this message: "Upgrade Check  We looked in the default location for qualifying products installed on the machine, but none were found. You may verify upgrade eligibility now by completing the fields to the right. 1) Select a product you already own. 2) Enter a serial number for this product.  CS4 wasn't in the list of selections. The protocol suggested won't work for me since I am not doing an upgrade but trying to reinstall what I already have. Can you direct me on where to go/what to do?  Thank you very much.      Bergi.
I found the solution to this problem. I was able to download the trial version of what I have and enter the serial number from there. However, it still asked for a serial number from previous software: "your setup is for an upgrade version of Adobe Creative Suite 4." (I entered the serial number that I have for CS2. And it was accepted.  Thank you.  Bergi

  • HT1338 How do I retrieve my Mac OS password? Without that I am not able to upgrade from OS x 10.6.8 to higher versionsto

I have bought an iphone 5 and signed up for icloud service to sync my imac. But minimum requirement for icloud is 10.7.5 and my imac is OS X10.6.8. Also the itunes version in my imac is old so cable sync with iphone 5 not working.
I am not able to retrive my Mac OS password, without that I cant upgrade softwares in my imac. Looking for some advice.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you have the Snow Leopard DVD, read "Resetting your original administrator account password" > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
Then, check that your computer is supported > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs. If it's supported, open the App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. Make a backup of your files and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
When the download finishes, the OS X Mountain Lion installer will appear, so follow the steps. After upgrading, open System Preferences > iCloud, and set it up, so you will be able to use iCloud on the computer

  • New Mac migration - CC 2014

Has anyone used the Mac migration assistant to flawlessly move CC 2014 apps to a new Mac?
I've read some older threads where people ran into problems and had to completely re-install CC. I ordered a new iMac and am just wondering the best way to set it up. I could start from scratch, but I have so many other files, apps, system settings that I'd rather take my chances with the migration assistant. Or is there a way to use the migration assistant but leave out Adobe apps?

I solved it. i just moved all the adobe application folders into the wastebasket. started the creative cloud application download again. signed up my old mac from the creative cloud by using the cc app. then started the applications download again and it worked.

    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

  • HT4889 can i interrupt a mac to mac migration

I just started a migration from my old macbook pro to my new one thru wireless.  It says it will take over 19 hours to transfer, is there any way to interrupt the migration and start over with firewire?  I don't think my old mac will hold up that long.

    annieg88 wrote:
thanks for the quick response, I think I'll just try and wait it out
Often in Mac migration, it can be migrating a large file and give a false 'time remaining' calculation. This can fall quite rapidly at times. I have seen copy times drop from 20 hours to 30 minutes in the space of 5 minutes. It has never been a true indication of time, so don't panic too much. If you interupt it and do a full erase and reinstall, then you will be spending a bit of time at the Mac anyway. By advice, go to the pub and let it go. lol
    Cheers

  • Does Mac Migrate copy bad files/sectors?

I upgraded my MBP internal hard drive to a Samsung 1TB and it crashed for the 2nd time (will never buy another Samsung). So this time, I purchased a WD and migrated my system to the new drive sucessfully. I just wanted to see if anyone knew if the migrate function simply copies files or if it copys sectors of the hard drive. Basically I just want to know if Mac Migrate will copy the crap from the Samsung drive that might cause my new WD to act up - or if that's possible?

Migration copies files. If the files are corrupt, the corrupt data will be copied, but it won't affect the integrity of the disk in any way. If the disk that you are copying from has bad sectors, the copy may fail outright. If the disk can't be read, it can't be read.
Contemporary hard disks track bad blocks in firmware on the disk. Formatting and zeroing out the disk will force the disk to refresh it's internal map of bad blocks. All disks have a certain number of bad blocks on them at the time of manufacture, and these blocks are already mapped and ignored when you receive a new drive. The appearance of new bad blocks on a disk generally indicates either wear or a manufacturing defect. I would treat a drive that 's accumulated new bad blocks as a drive that has reached then end of its operational life and replace it.

  • Forgot my mac mini password

I forgot my mac mini login password, how can I reset it so I can get in to my mac mini?

    Reset password using Lion Recovery
If you bought a brand new Mac with Lion pre-installed, it includes a recovery partition with various system recovery tools. One of them allows you to reset your Mac’s password:
Restart your Mac while holding down the ⌘ and R keys at the same time until you see the Lion Recovery screen.
From the menu bar at the top, select Utilities > Terminal.
In the Terminal window type resetpassword and press Enter.
Use the Reset Password utility to select your startup volume, choose your user account, enter your new password, complete the password hint field, and click Save.
Quit Terminal and restart your Mac.
You can also reset your password by using your Apple ID. It ought to be the same one you just used to log in here.
Reset your login password using your Apple ID
Make sure that FileVault isn’t enabled on your computer.
Make sure that an Apple ID is associated with your user account, and that an administrator has given you permission to reset your own password using an Apple ID.For more information, see: Associate Apple IDs with your user account
Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
In the login window, click the question mark in the password field, and then click the arrow in the dialog that appears.
Enter an Apple ID and password, and then click Reset Password.

  • Is my mac acc password the same for iCloud ?

Is my mac accout password the same for iCloud?

It would be the same password for anything you do with the same Apple ID. The following quotation is from https://appleid.apple.com
An Apple ID is your user name for everything you do with Apple: Shop the iTunes Store, enable iCloud on all your devices, buy from the Apple Online Store, make a reservation at an Apple Retail Store, access the Apple Support website, and more.

In my newly purchased MacBook Air, Dropbox does not function properly (it shows MS Word, Excell and Power Point docs but not pictures). It asks for Mac OS Password for my computer which I do not have. How should I get this password ?

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.
