[PC / Mac] Modal vs. Non-modal ScriptUI windows issue

Hi,
in Photoshop ScriptUI 'dialog' Windows are supported (they're modal windows), while 'palette' Window's behavior is peculiar (they're non-modal, and as long as there's something going on in the script, they keep displaying - otherwise they automatically close). Apparently, this is different in InDesign (for instance), where palettes can stay idle - at least this is what I've been told.
I've found a couple of workarounds to work with palette Windows (my goal is to show them in order to let the user interact with either PS and the script's GUI - just like you'd do with regular panels and extensions - that is: to work with them as non-modal, idle palettes that mimic extension behavior), namely:
// usual Window stuff
win.show()
while (isDone === false) { // isDone is set true in win.onClose() etc.
  app.refresh();
or
var s2t = function(stringID) {
  return app.stringIDToTypeID(stringID);
var waitForRedraw = function() {
  var d;
  d = new ActionDescriptor();
  d.putEnumerated(s2t('state'), s2t('state'), s2t('redrawComplete'));
  return executeAction(s2t('wait'), d, DialogModes.NO);
// Window stuff
while (isDone === false) { // isDone is set true in win.onClose() etc.
  waitForRedraw()
The problem is as follows:
1. They both work on Mac, either CS5 and CS6
2. app.refresh() seems to work on PC + CS5, but not PC + CS6
3. waitForRedraw() fails on both PC + CS5 and PC + CS6.
Mind you: When I wrote that the workarounds fails in CS5 and/or CS6 on PC, I mean that the 'palette', idle windows are modal and not non-modal as it is on Mac (which is my main coding platform).
[EDIT] Further testing has shown that PC palettes are... halfway between modal and non-modal. For instance, you can click on menus, but not select a Tool; you can collapse or drag a panel, but not access its content. You can't absolutely click on the image - for instance I'm desperately trying to enable panning on PC palettes: no way, you can't have the Hand tool to click&drag the image. For some reason, a "soft-scrolling" is enabled (on my MacBookPro, two fingers scrolling in all directions in the trackpad - but how to mimic this behavior in a desktop PC with no trackpad I don't know). Weirdly enough, the trackpad's "soft-scrolling" works in all directions on PC + CS5 64bits only, either CS5 @32bits, CS6 @32/64bits goes up and down only, no left/right allowed - frankly, to deal with platform-dependent issues is one thing, to take into account 32/64bits too is... ehm...
So, to sum up there are big differences in the ScriptUI behavior depending on how platform and PS version are combined:
PC, 'palette' Window:
CS5 + waitForRedraw() = modal
CS5 + app.refresh() =  non-modal
CS6 + (app.refresh() OR waitForRedraw()) = modal
Mac, 'palette' Window:
(CS5 OR CS6) + (app.refresh() OR waitForRedraw()) = non-modal
Is there any... "working workaround" to make on PC CS6 a 'palette' ScriptUI Window to keep a non-modal, idling behavior? (the unasked question is: why is that palettes are behaving as non-modal in CS5 and not in CS6?! )
Thanks in advance!

  • Printing Non Modal External Window - print out additional blank page

    Hi All,
    I am printing out a content of a web dynpro view as a non modal external window with the browser print functionality.
    Even if the content of the web dynpro view is not more than the half of a page the browser print functionality prints 2 pages. The second page is a blank page.
    I tried to change the external window size in web dynpro, but it is still printing 2 pages.
    How can I set / configure the browser print functionality, so it prints only the page that contains the web dynpro view content?
    Thanks,
    Yasar

    Hi,
    I'm guessing the concurrent program is outputting text (character mode) as opposed to PDF?
    This could be a number of reasons:
    1. Printer driver issue, e.g. the number of lines printed on the page is more than is defined for the printer driver: Try reducing the "Rows" on the current program definition
    2. Printer PRT issue, extra page break could be being inserted.
    3. The "box" in the report definition containing the address could be being expanding due to the extra address line, but not enough space so it forces a new page to be printed.

  • Position of an non modal external window

    How is it possible to set the position of an non modal external window?
    I've tried it over
    window.setWindowPosition(new WDCssSize(500,WDWindowUnitOfLength.PX),new WDCssSize(200, WDWindowUnitOfLength.PX));
    and also over
    window.setWindowPosition(500,200);
    The result is always the same, the window is shown on the top left.
    Best regards,
    Thomas

    Hi Thomas,
    I tried the same. The code I tried is:
    IWDWindow pop1=wdComponentAPI.getWindowManager().createNonModalExternalWindow("http://www.google.com","google");
         pop1.setWindowSize(512,600);
         pop1.setWindowPosition(50,100);
         pop1.show();
    Its working fine for me. Even I tried changing the parameters for size and position. It worked fine.
    Just 1 thing I noted in you post. You gave the code as:
    window.setWindowSize(512;400);
    although I think it should be
    window.setWindowSize(512,400);
    I do not know whether it was a typo or its in the application(it would have been syntax error in your application).
    I am using IE 6.0. May be its something to do with the versioning.
    Regards.

  • TIP: Building Modal Popup Windows

    Build Modal Popup Pages
    Introduction
    The following is based on the 'How To Document' - 'Build Custom Popup Pages'.
    This How To will show the developer how to create Modal Popup windows with the ability to pass information back to the parent window.
    Example Scenario
    The example described in this how to adds a custom modal popup LOV to a form on the SCOTT.EMP table. Clicking the popup LOV link on the form page will popup a Modal LOV page that allows users to search by ENAME, JOB, and SAL. Selecting a value from this LOV page will close that popup LOV page and populate the ENAME, JOB, and SAL fields on the form page with the selected values. Additionally, had the user entered some data into the ENAME, JOB, and/or SAL fields on the form page, that data would be used in the initial search when the popup LOV page is first shown.
    Step 1 - Create a simple form page on SCOTT.EMP
    To create the form page, simply step through the HTML DB "Form on a Table or View" wizard against the EMP table accepting the defaults. For this example, create the form with a page number of one, and make sure to allow the ename, job, and sal fields to be editable. When the wizard completes, page 1 of the application should have the items P1_ENAME, P1_JOB, and P1_SAL on it as text fields.
    Step 2 - Create a popup page with search fields
    Next, create a page that's to be used as the popup window: Page 2. Ultimately, this page will have javascript, a report region, and some buttons. For now, though, just create a page 2 with the items P2_ENAME, P2_JOB, and P2_SAL on it as text fields.
    Step 3 - Set Modal popup page header requirements
    A) Modal windows by default cache the information they display. When creating a popup window which displays different information each time it is called or to allow searching the caching default must be switched off.
    Add the following meta-tag to the "HTML Header" field of the page-level attributes screen for page 2 to accomplish this:
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache">
    B) Modal windows by default open a new window when running any redirect calls. When creating a modal popup which passes back parameters to the parent window. The modal window has to be forced to fire redirect calls within its own window rather than open a new window for the redirect.
    Add the following tag to the "HTML Header" field of the page-level attributes screen for page 2 to accomplish this:
    <base target="_self">
    Step 4 - Add Javascript call to the popup page
    Because the popup page should filter its result set based on any values that the user might have entered onto the form page, you need to add a javascript function that would pass those values off. Add the following function to the "HTML Header" field of the page-level attributes screen for page 1 to accomplish this:
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
      function callMyPopup (formItem1,formItem2,formItem3) {
        var formVal1 = document.getElementById(formItem1).value;
        var formVal2 = document.getElementById(formItem2).value;
        var formVal3 = document.getElementById(formItem3).value;
        var url;
      url = 'f?p=&APP_ID.:2:&APP_SESSION.::::P2_ENAME,P2_JOB,P2_SAL:' + formVal1 + ',' + formVal2 + ',' + formVal3 ;
      // IE Browsers modal popup window
      if (window.showModalDialog) {
        w = showModalDialog(url, window.self,"status:0; scroll:1; resizable:1; dialogWidth:25; dialogHeight:43");
        // w is an array returned from the modal popup containing the passback values
        if (w) {
          document.getElementById("P1_ENAME").value = w[0];
          document.getElementById("P1_JOB").value = w[1];
          document.getElementById("P1_SAL").value = w[2];
          document.getElementById("P1_SAL").focus();
      else {
      // mozilla based browsers modal popup window
      w = open(url,"winLov","Scrollbars=1,resizable=1,width=800,height=600", modal="yes");
      if (w.opener == null)
        w.opener = self;
      w.focus();
    </script>Though you don't need to know how to read javascript for this example, it helps to understand that this function only does one important thing: it opens a modal popup window of page two in our application while passing values to P2_ENAME, P2_JOB, and P2_SAL. It gathers those values to pass from the names of the HTML DB items provided to it. The call to this function will be added in the next step below.
    Step 5 - Add a popup link next to the P1_SAL field on the form page
    Add a link to the form page that will call the callMyPopup function above and pass it the values it needs. To do so, place the following HTML in the "Post Element Text" field attribute of the P1_SAL item:
    <~a href="javascript:callMyPopup('P1_ENAME','P1_JOB','P1_SAL');">Click for LOV<~/a>NB. remove ~ from above when deploying
    Step 6 - Add the LOV report to the popup page
    The next step is to create a report on the popup page based on the values passed from the form on page one. The tricky part of this report is providing a means for the selected values to be passed back to the form page. This can be achieved by having a column of the report render as a javascript link that would close the popup window and pass the ename, job and sal values for that row back. Start by adding a simple report region to our Modal popup page that uses a query such as:
          select ename, job, sal , 'placeholder' the_link
            from emp
           where ename like '%'||:P2_ENAME||'%'
             and (job = :P2_JOB or :P2_JOB is null)
             and (sal = :P2_SAL or :P2_SAL is null)Note that the last column in this query is just a placeholder. once the region is created, turn that placeholder into a link by doing the following:
    Navigate to the Page Definition for page 2
    Next to the name of the report region created in step 6, Click Q
    Next to the column THE_LINK, click the edit icon
    In the "Link Text" field enter the string "select"
    In the URL field enter: javascript:passBack('#ENAME#','#JOB#','#SAL#'); Click the "Apply Changes" button
    Step 7 - Add the javascript function to the Modal popup page to pass selected values to the (parent) form page.
    In the previous step you added a call to a javascript function, passBack. Now add that function to the top of Modal popup page 2. In the same manner as step 4 above, add that passBack function to the page 2 by putting it in the "HTML Header" field of the page-level attributes screen. The function should look similar to the following:
    <script language="JavaScript">
       function passBack(passVal1, passVal2, passVal3)
         // IE Browser return the passback values in an array
         if (window.showModalDialog) {
           var retVal = new Array(passVal1, passVal2, passVal3);
           window.returnValue = retVal;
           window.close();
         // Mozilla based browsers right the passback values directly into the parent window
         else {
           opener.document.getElementById("P1_ENAME").value = passVal1;
           opener.document.getElementById("P1_JOB").value = passVal2;
           opener.document.getElementById("P1_SAL").value = passVal3;
           opener.document.getElementById("P1_SAL").focus();
           close();
    </script>This function simply sets the values of P1_ENAME, P1_JOB, and P1_SAL with the values of the whatever's stored to the three HTML DB item names passed to it. It also closes the current window and puts the cursor back into the P1_SAL field.
    Step 8 - Polishing
    The basic functionality of this custom modal popup window has been created in steps 1 though 7. To make its usage a little more friendly, it's advisable to add Cancel and Search buttons to the popup window page. The Search button should just be added as a regular button that branches back to the page 2. Adding this button allows users to re-query for LOV options without having to return to our form page. The Cancel button should be created with an "Action" of "Redirect to URL". The "URL Target" of the button should be javascript:window.close(). As the code suggests, the Cancel button would just close the popup window (with no values returned).
    Hope this is of use....

    Everything said above is working fine but in Mozilla small popup is coming in top left corner of browser..
    so please help me so that it is opened in proper width and height in mozilla.

  • Modal popup window refresh the parent (calling) window/view

    I have a modal popup window that is adding detail records.  When this window is closed via the Hide method in my controller I would like to refresh the parent (calling) window/view.
    What is the best way to do this?
    Regards,
    Diane

    Here's my process.....
    2-windows & 3 views
    Window 1 - Selection View and Detail View
    Window 2 - Add View (used as a modal popup window called by a button click on the detail view)
    Selection View has all the options for obtaining a list of data for the detail view.  The detail view has an Add button.  Component controller has the hide method and access to the other components that do the update/query methods. On the detail view the user can click Add and a popup modal window shows.  User enters data and clicks either the add or cancel button.  The Detail view needs to refresh to show the additional data that has been added by the modal window.  There are calcuated values in the detail view from a supply function.  This function is not running and the values are not changed.
    What should be put in the hide method that will cause the detail view to obtain new data and supply the calculated values?  If I was using the Add view as part of the same window as the detail/selection views I'd just put in a navigation link between the detail and add views and fire the plug.  I like the idea of the popup window so I'd like to get this to work.
    I put the wdContext.initialize() in the hide method - which yes - caused the detail view to run - however the context lost all the key values so I received a data not found.  I then tried to initialize those nodes that did not contain the key values but the detail view did not display new values.
    Thanks for any ideas.....Diane

  • Passing values to a modal dialog window...

    Hi All,
    Is there a way to pass massive amount of data into a pop-up
    modal dialog window? I have this following code that keeps giving
    me a JavaScript error whenever I have like 2000 characters in the
    documen.myForm.Product_Details textarea field. Any suggestions or
    advice is greatly appreciated, and thank you very much in advance!
    function Modal_NewWin() {
    var width = 750;
    var depth = 200;
    var productDetails = document.myForm.Product_Details.value;
    var url =
    "PreviewProducts.cfm?ProductID=#GetProductInfo.ProductID#&ProductDetails="
    + productDetails;
    var sfeatures = "dialogHeight: " + depth + "px; dialogWidth:
    " + width + "px; dialogTop: px; dialogLeft: px; center: Yes; help:
    No; resizable: No; status: No;";
    return window.showModalDialog(url,'',sfeatures);

    can you use JSStringFormat() without first submitting the
    form??? (so CF can see the value in the form field jsstringformat
    is applied to..)
    submitting a form to the preview page will solve the problem
    for sure, but then you will somehow have to have 2 different action
    target for the form, so that clicking 'preview' button submits the
    form to the modal window, and clicking a 'save' button will submit
    the form to another action page that inserts values into a db...
    you can do that, again with some more javascript...
    as html-escaping javascripts are readily available on various
    script sites, i think it will be easier to employ one of them...
    (please note that i am assuming quiet a lot about how the
    AppDeveloper's form works and what it does, since he never
    explained it himself...)

  • base target=_self issue in modal popup window.

    Hi,
    I have implemented a modal popup window as described in:
    TIP: Building Modal Popup Windows
    I also created a Search button (per step 8 "polishing")
    The html header of the page attributes of the LOV window contains (step 3):
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache">
    <base target=_self>
    Still for some reason when I hit Search, a new window opens.
    What am I missing here?
    Toon

    Andy,
    I added the quotes: but no difference in behaviour.
    However I did find something:
    On the search button I had erroneously defined a url-redirect going back to the same page.
    And I also had a conditional (request=search) branch going back to the same page.
    I deleted the url redirect on the search button, and it works fine now: the branch takes me back to the same window (without opening a new one).
    On further testing I found another issue concerning the pagination (it is of type: row ranges in select list with pagination).
    If I press next and previous all works well. But if I select a range from the select list it opens a new window...
    Any ideas here?
    Thanks,
    Toon

    two modal windows must be made by inheritance of JDialog.

    the jdialog has constructors where you can set another jdialog as owner. (the same as frame)

  • Conditional display of modal popup window?

    Hi,
    I'm currently implementing a file-upload in Apex 4.1. The workflow I envision is this:

    stephanI don't think you would call the java-script function from PL/SQL as much as (maybe) use PL/SQL to write it - embed the Javascript code in the generated HTML of the page. Another option would be to put the JavaScript code as page or item attributes to be executed at run-time

  • Stay on Top vs modal error windows

    I've noticed that if a window's properties include "Stay On Top" and a

  • Opening modal browser windows

    I have a question concerning opening modal browser windows.
    The UIX framework provides a javascript function called "openWindow". E.g. the ui:dateField uses this function to open it's separate browser window.
    The good thing using this function is, that the opener browser window gets shadowed and isn't accessible anymore.
    Therefore I also want to use this function to open my own modal windows. The problem here is that any postback in the modal window enables the opener window again.
    Interesting point is, that the date picker for a ui:dateFields also performs postbacks but the opener window stays shadowed.
    How can I perform postbacks in my own modal window and keep the opener window disabled?
    How does it work when using the date picker?

    Christian -
    I can provide some background about how the modal date picker window deals with this issue - and I think that you can use the same technique...
    The UIX body component has a built-in unload handler that gets called when the page is unloaded - for example, when you post data in your modal window. The unload handler will check to see if the page is a modal child of its parent window - and if so, will re-enable the parent window (the assumption here is that once the page has been unloaded, the modal child will be hidden).
    The solution that UIX uses for the date picker window is to place the contents of the child window inside of a frame set. The actual contents of the window are embedded inside of a frame inside of the frame set. That way, when you navigate inside of the child window, the body's built-in unload handler is still called - but, it no longer enables the parent window, since the body is no longer a child of the parent window - but is a child of the frame set.
    I think that you can implement a similar solution by embedding your modal window contents inside of a UIX frameBorderLayout component.

    Hello,  I have a web application that has two host header site collections in it.  When a user is on Host Header A, I need to open a list's display form that's located on Host Header B.  I'm using the JS function  SP.UI.ModalDialog.showModalDialog(options)
    to open a dialog window to the host header B list's display form.  It loads and shows all the columns, but there are a couple issues.
    1) The scroll bar on the dialog window is not active (can't scroll up or down to see all the columns).  This is an issue on all browsers (IE 8 &9, Chrome, FF)
    2) In IE, the SP ribbon does not display.  In Chrome and FF the ribbon does display and the buttons work fine.
    There's no errors in the ULS logs, and if I use IE8, there's a JavaScript "Access Denied" error.  I've confirmed the user account has permissions on both sites & list.
    My first thought had to do with anonymous access being turned on at the web application level (not the site level) and the credentials not being passed to the new site collection.  But this isn't the case because in Chrome, the ribbon shows and the
    buttons are security trimmed correctly based on the users permissions.  So I know the credentials are getting passed through the dialog window.  And when I use the "Edit' button on the ribbon in chrome, it opens a new dialog window and everything
    works correctly (Scroll bar and ribbon).
    Has anybody been able to successfully open a list form across two separate host header site collections?

    I ended up getting around the cross site collection in the modal window issue by using a custom ASPX page that works as a redirect using JS.
    The link the end user clicks pops open the aspx page in a dialog window.  I then pull the URL of the list item I want to open from the URL and have JS open that form in the modal window.  The key seems to be to open the redirect aspx page under
    the same site collection as the list item you want to view.
    Here's the JS that's in the aspx page.
    <script type="text/javascript">
    // We name the current dialog windown
    window.name = "newSiteWindow";
    // wait until we know the the JS lib is loaded
    ExecuteOrDelayUntilScriptLoaded(loadNewSite, "sp.js");
    function loadNewSite() {
    //grab the list item URL from the URL of the dialog window using a pre created function
    newURL = GetUrlParmByName("listItem");
    //append our dlg query to the end so everything displays correctly. If you do not use IsDlg=0, the ribbon does not display and the window will not scroll.
    newURL = newURL + "&IsDlg=0";
    //use the current window to open the list item we want to go to.
    window.open(newURL, "newSiteWindow");
    </script>
