PC - Mac transfer

I just received a G4 tower, and I want to transfer my iTunes library (~40G) from my PC to it.
There is an existing wireless network in the house. I have plugged a crossover cable into both machines. No joy on either of those. The only way I have gotten the two machines to see each other has been to initiate an ad-hoc network on the Mac for the PC to join. This is an 11Mbps connection, according to my wireless program.
I am copying the files currently, but the Mac says this will take about 31 hours to complete! I hope there is a faster way to do this? I am considering using my iPod as a transfer, but I have no idea how long that will take either; it is a 5G, so no firewire there.
Mac is running Tiger, PC is running XP Pro.

Nevermind. iPod is obviously the best/fastest method.

  • During initial setup of mac pro, used pc to mac transfer, after transfer mac requires new password to enter account but will not accpt password

During the initial setup of mac book pro, I did the pc to mac transfer. After transfer was complete, mac had two user accounts aspen pc machine? and dell. Upon trying to access either, the mac says I have to enter new password to enter. It will not accept new password. What do I do?

Well....I bit the bullet and called Apple tech support this morning and agreed to pay my $49 for the tech support. I ended up talking to a Boot Camp specialist. In the end his position was that "they didn't support Windows" and my particular problem was a "Windows problem". I countered with the fact that they advertise that one of their selling points was that Windows could run on an Intel Mac and that I ought to at least be able to install Windows. They said that most people were able to install Windows with no problems. I agreed, but told them that, after searching the Internet, I had read numerous posts from folks that had the same problem and that Apple really should address it. They were very polite and even agreed not to charge me the $49, but their final position was that it was a "Windows problem."
I guess that at this point I'll try to return the Windows disk to Amazon and see if they'll give me a replacement.

  • Scanner is my only casualty after Mac to Mac transfer

    Hello,
Having just upgraded my iMac, and carried out the Mac to Mac transfer (such a breeze), my only casualty is my scanner. Epson brand.
On launch from the dock, following error message is encountered:
"The application "Epson Scan" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "<EPSON Scan><EPSON Scan><TWAIN Source Manager.Shlb>"
I've downloaded and installed the drivers over again, but gut feel this is adding to the problem.
Anyone prepared to offer an idiot guide quick fix?
    Thanks in advance
    Best regards
    Tim

You need to completely remove all the Epson scanning software; please see this page
    http://kb.epson-europe.com/al/12/2/article.aspx?aid=1973&bt=4
Once done you should be able to download and install the latest software and get it to work. I had exactly the same issue asa you describe when I upgraded to Snow Leopard; after following this procedure it now works fine.

  • Best iPad to Mac transfer

What is the best iPad to Mac transfer software ?

If the Mac use Lion (10.7) you can use Airdrop for that.
With Mac's not using Lion you may set up a computer to computer (ad hoc) connection.

  • Why does my mac transfer files so slow compared to a PC?

I am not very good at computers, but i noticed that my friend's computer (a PC) transfers files way faster than mine, and i don't think has better hardware than me. when i transfer files to a flash drive it takes around 30 mins to fully transfer 8 gigs of files, and his PC takes half the time. any ideas why his computer transfer files faster? can some one tell me what might be the difference between his PC and my MacBook Pro
    My MacBook Pro has:
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory:    8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Hard Drive: 750.16 TOSHIBA MK755MGSXF Media

30 mins. for 8 GB seems too long even for USB 2.0.  If the flash drive is working at 60 MB/sec., the max speed for USB 2.0, it should take about 2.5 minutes to transfer the whole contents.
It may be slower because there are other USB peripherals on your Mac's USB bus...printer/scanner, display card, etc.?
USB flash memory has a format, just like a drive.  Perhaps you'd get faster performance if you formatted the USB stick in the Apple format; (but I can't imagine that's the cause) or there's some other hangup with that hardware.  Try another USB stick.  If you buy a new one, insert it into the Mac, but before using it, go to Disk Utility and format it as Mac Extended.

  • Pc external mac transfer?

My new imac should be arriving on Wednesday and I'm hoping that my itunes transfer goes smoothly & flawlessly. I have 90 gigs of music on my external that has been running off my pc for the last few years. Will I be able to transfer the itunes music folder on the external on to the new imac? I have never formatted the hard drive and wouldn't know how to do it if I was supposed to.
I've heard that if you plug in an external drive that has been used with a pc, it will may get erased or damaged when plugged into a mac for the first time. Is this true? If it does work, could I then use it again with the pc or will it then be strictly for the mac?
When transfering, I know I want to move the itunes music folder, but would I want to move the itunes library file too? Anything else that would need moving?
Thanks for the help...just don't want to lose all of my music.

anyone? The "pc to mac switch 101" says that you can just plug in an external hd and it will work fine, but when I have asked around, I was advised not to do that. Can anyone elaborate from experience?

  • PC to Mac transfer photos and Music from ipod photo 30gb

My pc crashed and I got a mac, I don't know how to transfer music and photos to my new mac. I've read, something about senuti with an ipod shuffle. I want to know if its the same process to follow?
    Any help will be great

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here (you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well):
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
Senuti Mac Only (iPod Touch & iPhone compatible)
    PodView Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
TuneAid Mac only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    Floola Mac & Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
If you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod
If not, there are a few programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:
Keith's iPod Photo Reader Mac only
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
TouchCopy Mac and Windows Versions (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
4). Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • 2006 iMac died, new iMac to arrive today, will my files that are backed up on my external hard drive (a My Book for Mac) transfer to the new computer?

2006 iMac died, new iMac to arrive today, i have my files/music/pictures backed up on an external hard dirve MyBook for Mac. Will these files transfer to the new computer? I was also using Time Capsule on the old Mac but cannot migrate because it is dead!

Yes. Use Setup Assistant when you first set up your new iMac. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872

  • Will PC DVD iTunes Backup Discs work in MacBookPro (PC to MAC transfer)?

The question is simple, I hope the answer is too. I plan on buying a new MacBookPro (MBP)shortly and want to transfer my music from my PC to the Mac. My library isn't that big and I can burn it to several (8) DVD's if I have to.
The question is, will a backup iTunes DVD from a PC work when put into a MBP?? Or, is there something I need to do to the format of the DVD's to make them work in a MBP after the PC has backed them up to DVDs?
Second question, I have copied the iTunes Library to an external HDD (NTFS format). Can I hook the external Drive up to the MAC and transfer the music that way? This would be easier of course.
    Any ideas?

Sounds like you have plenty of ways to transfer all the files. I'm confused, though:
+I was hoping I could drag and drop the iTunes library file from my PC to a MBP by using a external hard drive+
The library file is just a database. You need to move the library content, too (all the music & movies).
If you have the standard itunes setup, all your itunes content should be on the PC in a folder named itunes media. It will have all the subfolders of movies, podcasts, music (arranged in yet more subfolders by artist, then album). That's all you really need to move to the MBP if you don't care about ratings, playlists, & play counts.

  • Document in Word for mac transfer to iPad

I have prepared a document in Excel for Mac on my iMac. Is it it possible to transfer this to my iPad Air and then edit ?
    Thanks

Yes. You can use iCloud to upload the document to Pages or Numbers on iCloud.com. It will then get transferred to the appropriate app on your iPad if you have it.

  • PC to Mac Transfer on External HD

I don't know if this has been addressed elsewhere, I'm running out of time so I'll just go ahead and post here...
I have a G5 and I recently took some 8mm film to be transferred into digital .avi files. I provided them with my Western Digital external hard drive which was formatted for Mac and they use PC. When they tried to transfer the files, the PC wouldn't read my hard drive. I am trying to figure out the easiest and cheapest way to get these files on my ext. hard drive without taking it anywhere. Also, they offered me the option of taking their PC external hard drive with the files on it for me to take home and try it the other way but I'm not sure if that would be a waste of time. I'd really appreciate any info anyone could give me or direction.
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi hazelrah:
FYI, Mac OS X (10.4) can read and write to any Windows HD formatted with FAT (16) -rare now, and FAT32, rare too, but can only read NTFS (XP and 2000), so I suppose you could format an external HD as FAT and be compatible with both Windows or Mac, but be aware of the size limitations of FAT ( less than 32 MB I think ).

  • Pc to mac transfer ........ almost there -please HELP me complete!

Successfully have moved all music, artwork, vids, podcasts from PC to MAC... moved the iTunes files across, and my playlists are present, but in name only..the associated music to playlist didn't connect.... Two different questions..
    1) do I need to backup and do something different w/ iTunes files (.itl or .xml), , if so, need instruction so I don't screw it up.......
    2) my iPhone - attaching it to the MAC for first time - CAN'T lose my stuff! how am I assuring that my backed up data is now on the MAC?

    How did you did this?
The recommended process for simple self-contained libraries is:
    1. Delete or rename any existing iTunes library folder on the Mac
    2. Copy the entire iTunes folder from PC to Mac
    3. Rename *iTunes Library.itl* as *iTunes Library*
    4. Delete *iTunes Library Genius.itdb* (apparently the file is not cross-platform compatible)
    5. Start iTunes
It all gets more complicated if the library isn't consolidated (i.e. all files inside the *iTunes Media* folder) and self-contained (i.e. *iTunes Media* folder inside the iTunes library folder) but essentially the task involves making the library self-contained before attempting to transfer it.

  • New Mac - transfer from previous TM with multiple hard drive backups

I just got a new Mac Pro. Previously I had a PowerMac G5 running Leopard which had two internal hard drives being backed up using Time Machine. When I started my new MacPro (running Snow Leopard), I selected transfer using Time Machine, but it only found one hard drive (my boot drive) and not the drive with all my files on it. How do I transfer this other drive? My new MacPro also has two internal hard drives so that I could have a similar setup.

You can probably use the full restore procedure, per #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Just be sure to select the "other" drive on the screen listing the backups (the 5th point in the green box of #14).
Sometimes, however, it will only let you select the boot disk. In that case, back out, restart normally, and restore from the normal "Star Wars" display.
Since you're on a different Mac from the backups, you'll have to use the procedure in #E2 and E3 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Don't restore the entire folder representing the second disk; select all the top-level folders and restore them.
