PC monitors on a mac mini

I'm considering buying a mac mini in replacement for my HP Pavilion PC. Will my HP mx705 monitor work on it???? One the back of the mac mini I see the monitor port but my monitor's cord end is a different shape than the one shown on the mac mini. Is an adapter included with it????????????
URGENT HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

Believe me I understand what you're saying. I was
thinking about the iMac G4 but Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
is coming out and the iMac still starts out with 10.3
Panther and upgrading the OS is an additional $127
and the processor is only 800Mhz and the newers one
are dual and are 1Ghz and my Pc that I have now is
2Ghz.
It may be of interest to know that on my desk I have a 1GHz G4 system, and a 3GHz PC, both with 1Gb RAM. Of the two systems, I typically work on the Mac - not so much because I'm a happy mac user in itself, but because the Mac is not notably slower to use, but considerably more pleasant an environment to work with. It helps that it's not bogged down with antivirus software and other defensive tools which gobble up CPU load on the PC (I do run ClamXav antivirus software on the Mac since it's in a PC network, but ClamX makes very little demand on the system) but by and large the clock speed is not all that meaningful as a measure of performance across such disparate architectures.
As to leopard - Indeed, it will cost extra if added to a used system, and as yet we don't know what minimum system specifications it will require. But it seems most likely to run on a significant proportion of older systems, just as efficiently as Panther and now Tiger have done. I'd also have to say that I'd much prefer to work with an oldish G4 running 10.3 than a newish PC running XP or even Vista, for a whole host of reasons! Actually panther was a very solid OS and a remarkably powerful one. That it is now replaced and part of history doesn't detract from the features it has or the software it can run!
But then, as a former Mac owner I don't need to tell you that, because you'll know these things already! I look forward to welcoming you back to the Mac-owning fold as and when your situation allows for the purchase of one!

  • Can I use My Ibook G4 as a Second Monitor For My Mac Mini G4

    Hi
I wonderd if theres any way of being able to use my 14'' Ibook G4 as a second monitor for my Mac Mini G4? I already have a Samsung SyncMaster 913n. Is there any way of doing this by firewire using both monitors, if not what cables would I need?
    Thanks

There is a application called Synergy which you may find useful. It allows the keyboard, mouse and clipboard to be shared across computers, and even different operating systems. It's not strictly what you have asked for as each computer still runs it's applications (and operating system) separately, meaning you can not drag windows between the screens, but by allowing you to copy and paste between the computers, and seamlessly slide your mouse and keyboard input between them you may get the effect you desire. Oh, and it is free and open-source, so why not give it a whirl?
You will need to connect the machines with a TCP/IP network, which can be done either with an ethernet patch cable, or alternatively as you suggest, using FireWire - these two articles may assist you in setting that up: IP over FireWire in Panther and Tiger.
As a point of note, a commercial program, MaxiVista allows exactly what you are looking for under Microsoft Windows.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can i run two monitors on a mac mini?

I'm wondering if I can run a 5 year old cinema display and a cheap flat screen monitor on a mac mini. Someone at Apple said yes but someone at a Mac store said no.

OK, I am a musician also and I just purchased a Mac Mini (late 2010 version).  So I can tell you with out a doubt that it has support for 2 monitors of any kind.  If your cinema display has the Apple ADC connector it is going to be tough. Some people use the displayport to dvi adaptor connected to a DVI to ADC adaptor and plug and claim to have it working. I have NO IDEA how it would.
The MINI comes with this adaptor:

  • Can i have multiple monitor with my mac mini ?

Can i have multiple monitor with my mac mini like i do with my PC ?  2 differents screens.. not mirror.

There's lots of Mac Mini models since 2006 or so. What do you have?
Most support two monitors but how you do it is different depending on model.
    Put this phrase into Google
            dual monitors, mac mini
and you'll come up with the solution needed based on which MM you have.

  • Can I connect 2 monitors to a Mac Mini?

I am thinking of buying a Mac Mini for an art installation project and will need to connect two monitors to it. Please can someone let me know if I can connect more than 1 monitor to a Mac mini. Can they be 19" monitors or must they be smaller resolution? Do they have to be of a particular specification? Any recommendations? Thanks very much.

A simple splitter would theoretically support anything up to the mini's maximum resolution, but in practice it depends on the actual displays being used as the whether the mini correctly identifies the devices and offers the correct range of resolution options. Some juggling (such as disconnecting one display while the system boots or wakes from sleep) can help, but it really does depend on the display(s) as to whether the mini behaves correctly via a splitter of this sort.
The Matrox device is technically far better because it presents itself to the mini as a single display, but of course it limits maximum resolution across both screens, and thus isn't really all that attractive a proposition unless 15" LCDs are to be used rather than anything larger.
The USB-based device seems to offer the best of both worlds - or at least will offer the best of both worlds when released with tried and tested Mac drivers. It's not all that clear why Mac drivers have been slow in coming for these devices when they have been around for Windows for some time now, and a number of manufacturers had pre-announced Mac versions as much as a year ago. At the general price of $99 or so, a USB adaptor would provide a reasonably low cost and (importantly) flexible way to add a second display.... if such a device can be currently had!
The forgoing is the reason the 'yes' answer is not the short one!

No. Your iMac only has DVI video connection. You would need an iMac with Thunderbolt.

  • Lenovo monitor connected to Mac mini

I have a Lenovo LI2223s monitor connected to Mac mini - and works fine when from full start up.  But when has been in 'sleep' mode overnight, does not display any longer upon wake-up.  Is there something I can do to correct this problem? (waking the monitor does bring up a very very dim light there somewhere - but general appearance of monitor is blank - mini is no longer sleeping)

The above also applies to other monitor connections

  • Using an emac as a monitor for a mac mini

    Hi,
Sorry if the question was already asked, but a quick search in the forum brought no answer.
I have an emac (OS9) and a mac mini(OSX). I'd like to use the emac as a monitor for the mac mini. Is it possible? How? (Both are G4, although I don't think that's relevant : I don't want to use them at the same time, only to use the Emac as a "screen")
    Many thanks.

I happen to know for a fact that you can use the internal screen on an iMac G3 333, and presumably also a 266 and 233. It has a fixed horizontal frequency so it will only display the resolutions that you can choose with it's motherboard installed: 640x480@117Hz, 800x600@95Hz, and 1024x768@75Hz. With DisplayConfigX I was even able to get other resolutions, as long as I stayed within the 60kHz horizontal frequency. If try to set it to any other resolution and refresh rate it will not work, so the best way to test it is to have another screen as your main screen so that you can set the resolutions on the iMac screen from there. I imagine that the screen in the eMac does not have a fixed horizontal frequency, so if you got the pinouts, you could probably get it working. However, I made a custom video cable for a slot loading iMac G3, and I couldn't get it to work.

  • 3 DVI monitors with Thunderbolt Mac Mini

Is it possible to have 3 DVI monitors with Thunderbolt Mac Mini?

    Maybe.
The first could be via a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter
The second could be via a HDMI to DVI cable
The third would have to be via a Displaylink USB adapter
It should be noted that the AMD powered Mac mini 2011 model will handle this workload better.

Not sure what you mean, but I truly think it requires far more than just a 3-D Monitor.

  • Compaq Laptop as monitor for a Mac Mini

I was wondering if it would be able to use a Compaq laptop as a monitor for a Mac Mini because I want to be able to easily switch between Mac and PC for as cheap as possible I would like to use the laptop as a monitor for the Mini.
    Thanks a lot,
    Alex

    Richard,
Unless the Compaq has a video
    i input
this is not possible. However, you can use VNC to control your mini from your Compaq. If this is an option for you depends on the intended use for your mini.

The James Colby system (123macmini link) seems to be the only one I could find with an color display. He went for an LCD, instead of CRT. He kept the original look of the CRT by cutting the picture tube (so the glass face stayed in place, but behind it is an LCD).
Here's the discussion where he specifies the source for the LCD display:

  • Need advice on a monitor for my mac mini

    Hi,
I am going to buy a monitor for my mac mini.
I had been using a CRT monitor with my PC.
I guess LCD monitors are the norm these days.
Can someone recommend a monitor size and other details which I must look for before buying a monitor?
My computer runs 24 hours a day. There is very little downtime.
I am not looking for something flashy. I am looking for a monitor which gets the job done.
I am not into graphical/video editing though I will be viewing a lot of photos/movies/mp4/avi movies on it.

Almost any LCD monitor that will accept a digital signal, via a dvi cable, will work. With digital, the computer doesn't have to convert the video signal to analog, so what you see is a bit crisper. Many LCD monitors will accept both analog and digital video inputs. I have a Samsung 19" 904BW LCD monitor - a basic model, not too expensive, accepts digital or analog signals (I use digital from my mini), which is a good display.
Some LCD monitors come with speakers built in, which can be a plus if desk space is at a premium.
You should go to a store to view the various LCD monitors available - see what you like, what appeals to you. Note that sometimes LCD monitors come with dead pixels, and some vendors have a minimum number of dead pixels required before they will exchange the monitor. The recommendation above to buy from someplace with a good return policy should be considered when buying an LCD monitor.
