PC Pagemaker Files

A customer came into our print shop today with a CD with 3 .PM6 files on it. InDesign CS3 won't open them. I tried them on our old Mac running OS 9 and Pagemaker 6 and it won't recognize the files either.
I tried a few tricks such as setting the missing type/creator codes from pre-OSX days and not sure what I did but now they show up as being openable in InDesign but now they just crash InDesign...
I have CS5 at home, going to try that too but I'm at a loss what to do next.

I have Pagemaker files I open here all the time with indesign cs4 this is on a mac.
If you will try opening them here if you like. I can then save them as cs4 for you.

Update:
Just tried opening a pm6 file with indesign would not work
Renamed file from .pm6 to p65 and indesign would open it (yes i lied to the program)

  • Error converting Pagemaker file to PDF

    Hi there,
I've been trying endlessly to convert an Adobe PageMaker 7.0  file to PDF. I've followed the process of "click on File, and then Export to PDF"; however, during the conversion process, an error message always pops up:
"When you create a PDF file, you have to send the host fonts. Please go to the Acrobat distiller printer properties, 'Adobe PDF settings page' and turn off the option "Don't send fonts to Distiller."
I've searched tirelessly where this option can be found and unchecked, but it seems elusive.
Can you help with this please?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
Thanks for posting. Unfortunately, at this time Acrobat.com doesn't support the conversion of Pagemaker files to PDF. For a list of supported formats, please see our help page on converting to PDF:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat.com/Using/WS4c4da310f3b0910a64131dac123f400852b-8000.h tml
What you're trying to do is possible with the desktop version of Acrobat; if this is an urgent need and you don't currently have a copy of Acrobat, I would try downloading a free 30-day trial version here:

    I hope this is helpful!

  • Opening PageMaker files on a Mac running Leopard

What program can be used to open windows pagemaker files on a Mac running Leopard?

None. You'll need to install Windows on your Mac.

  • How to send a Pagemaker file to people who don't have this software???

Since Pagemaker has been mentioned in regard to my last question about finding a new ink jet printer, I thought maybe someone could tell me how I can send a Pagemaker file to people to don't have a Mac and/or who don't have Pagemaker. I can't seem to convert anything to a PDF file by going to "save as". There are times that I can simply drag a Pagemaker file onto an old version of Microsoft but sometimes the type changes drastically and sometimes there is a large space between letters, especially on bold titles. Many of the files I need to send contain some simple graphics for magazine ads.
I realize you probably can't offer a lesson but maybe there is a simple answer.
    Thanks a bunch, in advance.

You need to select PDFWriter (or PDF something) in the Chooser as your default printer. I have something called PDFWriter in my Extensions folder and PDFPlugin in the Printer Descriptions folder. I'm not sure where these came from, and i'm not sure what Print2PDF is, but you're actually printing your Pagemaker file, not saving it, when you create the PDF. As for page setup, the formatting isn't always quite right with my PDFWriter either, but that's mainly when i print webpages. Haven't actually tried PDFWriter with Pagemaker.

  • Combining two seperate pagemaker files into one pagemaker file.

We are having done two seperate pagemaking files in two different systems. We are in need to combine/join these two pagemaker publications into one pagemaker publication. How to do this?

    There's several options.
    1. If the two publications are on different PCs, then create a PDF of each and combine them in Acrobat.
2.Use the Book utility to combine the files when you print.  They need to be on the same PC.
    3. If the two publications are on the same PC (with all the necessary fonts and images), and the files are small, i.e. no more than a few pages, then open both publications in PM.  Tile the two publications side by side.  Add the required number of new pages to the first document, and have "New page 1" opposite "Page 1" of the second publication.
With the pointer tool selected in the second publication, click Edit - Select All.  Then quickly drag all the objects acroos to "New Page 1" in the first publication.
Do the same for the remaining pages - hence the requirement for not having too many pages.
Use File - Save As to save the first publication with a new filename.  All links to images will be preserved.

  • Can InDesign CC open PageMaker files?

I'm trying to open some old PageMaker files using InDesign CC and it doesn't seem to work. Do I need a plug-in?

I was not able to open a Pagemaker File directly with InDesign CC. We got the same message that you did that you need a plug-in to open the file, but there is no plug-in available. None of that Ctrl+D or place stuff that Adobe told us to try worked on the macs. We never tested their support suggestions on Windows
However we were able to open the very same file with CS6. Fonts and a very simple relinking of the Images were all we had to do, then save it as a CS6 InDesign file and then open it with CC InDesign.
An example of a feature that was in CS6 InDesign and gone from CC.
Hope this real answer based upon a real person's experiences help.

  • Error Message Opening PageMaker file in InDesign CS2

I'm using Windows Vista with Adobe CS2, the educational version.
When I try to open any previous Pagemaker files 6.5 and earlier, I get an error message that says the Pagemaker file is seriously damaged and cannot be opened. It happens with all PageMaker files I try to open.
This is a new HP computer and I used to have PageMaker 6.5 and InDesign CS 1.5 working fine on the old computer. Do I have to have PageMaker installed on this computer? I've tried clicking on the file to open it and from Indesign with file open. Any ideas?!

Since installing XP SP3 in addition to being unable to open Pagemaker 7 files in Indesign CS I now find I cannot open Indesign again if I close it. I have to reboot XP for a fresh start.
Also Illustrator CS opens only to present a box "Could not complete operation" and then closes. There are no problems then in opening it a second time, except it takes the usual significant time to start.
Are these symptoms of the same problem with SP3 and the Adobe software. It is disappointing to see people say neither Adobe or Redmond are at all interested.

  • New problem opening Pagemaker files with InDesign

I have quite a lot of archive files made in Pagemaker 6 and 7 and now use InDesign CS2. Until recently I could open pagemaker files from InDesign then save them as InDesign files and away I went.
But now I am just getting an error message saying the document is damaged and cannot be recovered. First off I thought it really was a damaged document but then realised all my old .pmds were saying the same.
Is there a known issue maybe with a recent upgrade of InDesign or something?
I would really love to be able to access my old pmds!!
    Thanks in anticipation.

Yes Joel you're right - XP and recently installed SP3.
Just pondering the best way forward.
I'm responsible for the IT for a small charity with 8 staff members.
I have Master Suite CS3 and use a variety of the programmes but the other staff members are only using InDesign and MS Office.
We're not a high end design set up but producing all the sort of leaflets, posters bits and pieces that we need day to day.
Decided to upgrade to Office 2010 and to do that I had to install SP3.
Stuck with ID2 for everyone else (and went to great lengths to buy some extra licenses to do so) because opening an ID2 file with ID3 creates a new file which is a big nuisance and it's expensive to upgrade across the board (even with charities having access to educational licensing concessions).
Fact of life is we do tend to have quite long-lived files and I will go on wanting to open pagemaker ones for some time to come.
I probably only want to convert a pmd once a month I guess - it's just suddenly a huge nuisance not to be able to do those few ...
I can't roll back to SP2 because of Office 2010.
I could re-set one workstation wtih XP2, Office XP and InDesign CS2 purely to be able to convert pmds. Again, nuisance and ties up a licence on a little-used machine.
I could bite the bullet and move everyone over to InDesign CS3 - will I definitely be able to open pmds from there?
Ah, just thought - I have an ID3 licence but not loaded on my computer. If I load that and use it just for opening pmds then export them for backwards compatibility with ID2 like this http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/5.0/help.html?content=WSa285fff53dea4f86173837510 01ea8cb3f-6d4d.html will I then be a happy bunny?
Would be glad of expert comment before I start faffing about!
    Thanks

  • How to Convert older Pagemaker Files to InDesign CC?

I have a number of older Pagemaker files from 1999-2001 that I would like to open in InDesign.   How do I accomplish this?

You'll have to download InDesign CS6 (available as a CC subscriber). The method is described in this thread:

Is it possible to open PageMaker files in CS2? or CS6?  How can I download it while keeping my CC2014?

  • Opening PageMaker files in ID?

Hello, I have some old PageMaker files I would like to try opening in ID, but I'm getting an error message that says, "Cannot open the file "[filename]". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application." I assure you it definitely isn't a problem with it being open. So, it seems either ID doesn't support it or I'm missing a plug-in. Any help with figuring out what the case is would be appreciated... I can't seem to put my hands on the answer, myself. Thanks.

Converting Pagemaker files is "iffy" at best. If you convert in CS5 you'll need CS4, CS3, and CS2 as well to make a file that can be opened in CS1, and it probably would be just as easy to start over if the document isn't too long.
By default, Pagemaker embedded many images, which will need to be unembedded and linked before conversion, and you'll need any other images that were linked all along, to get a successfult conversion or a rebuild.

  • How do you open PageMaker files in CS5?  I need to update an older PM6.5 multi-page document.

I am fairly new to CS5.  I need to update a multipage document that I believe is either a PageMaker 6.5 or 7.0 file.  When I try to open, I can't.

What happens when you try? Do you get an error message? If so, the word-for-word content of the error message might help.
Are you sure it's a PageMaker file? It sounds like you might be uncertain. If you can make it publicly available (by e.g. sending it to yourself on YouSendIt and posting or emailing the link) then I could open it up in Notepad++ and see if it really is a complete, undamaged PageMaker file.

  • CS2 Opening Pagemaker files

I'm a PageMaker hold out - been using it for years - have CS2 Premimum but have only dabbled with it prefering to stay with the more familiar PageMaker.  However, I realize I have to go to Indesign because of support, operating systems, etc.  I have a problem in that Indesign won't open any PageMaker files.  I was able to open them before but now am getting a message saying that the PageMaker file is corrupt and can't be opened.
This is occurring on all PM files - even test ones that I create and try to open.  The files are apparently not corupt because PM opens them all.
I'm using InDesign CS2, PM 7.01, trying to open the PM files direct from the hard drive that the file was created on, recently reinstalled Windows XP Media Center, and had to reinstall PM and ID.  Since then can not open a PM file in ID.
Can anyone put there shed some light on this.  I have years of PM files that need converted to ID if I am to move on to ID.  (Plan is to open them as I need them.)    I would appreciate any hin ts, solutions you might have.

Thanks Bob, Peter  . . . . . you guys have saved me a lot of heartache and time.  I'l l roll back to SP2 and go from there.
    I REALLY appreciate the help.

  • HELP!!! Problems in opening Pagemaker files in Indesign

I am an editior for mathemtics books. I used to use the Pagemaker 7.0 to prepare my book. Before inputting the materials into the Pagemaker, I typed all of my contents in Microsoft Word. In the Microsoft Word environment, other than the text, I¡¦ve used WordArt, Equation Editor as well as some diagramsand effects. Then, I copied all the stuffs into Pagemaker directly (some as texts and some as objects). The process went smoothly and there were no problems in the past. But when I switched to use Indesign this week, I¡¦ve encountered serious problems.
First of all, if I tried to open the old Pagemaker files, the following
    contents cannot be displayed normally:
Some of the fonts with special effects
Mathematical equations (I made them in equation editor in Microsoft Word. In fact, I found equation editor in Pagemaker also but I can¡¦t find that in Indesign.)
    Some of the diagrams.
The error message says the following:
¡§Tracking values were modified. Please check text composition in converted
    document.
No fill patterns are supported at this time.
Lock/Unlock property of objects are set based on group¡¦s property.¡¨
Then, I tried to copy the materials from Microsoft Word to Indesign (which I usually did for Pagemaker as before). But still, it didn¡¦t work. I¡¦ve looked into help and then used ¡§Paste without formatting¡¨ but the result was still no good.
As Indesign is a placement for Pagemaker, I think there should be solutions to the problems above. Is there any procedure done wrong or do I need to adjust some settings?
Hopefully you can understand my situation. I¡¦ve prepared all the materials under Microsoft Word and want to copy them into Indesign to publish a book. It¡¦s painful for me to re-type all the materials into Indesign again. There were no problems for me to copy into Pagemaker. So would you please kindly help me to figure out how I can fix it? As the deadline for me to submit the materials to the publisher is approaching, I¡¦m really in a hurry.
Thanks very much for your attention and looking forward to receiving your
    reply!
    Regards,
    Alex

If you have a subscription to the Creative Cloud, you can download InDesign CS6 as well as CC.
Go to creative.adobe.com. If necessary, log in with your Adobe ID. Click on the Download Center tab. Click on the InDesign link (don't click Download yet). On the InDesign page, under the heading "In This Version" is a menu. Select InDesign CS6. Then select Download InDesign CS6.

  • Trying to locate all PageMaker files on my Mac

I'm trying to locate all PageMaker files on my Mac. It's difficult because they bare no common extension, for that matter, no extension at all.
Can use AppleScript to collect a list of file names for any file with any of the following Creator codes. If so, any suggestions?
I've successfully used Mac OS's Spotlight to find my PageMaker documents ... employing command-F, with the Other/Creator or Other/Type option.
I know this much about the Creator codes, but I don't know how to make a complete list of files. Seems like AppleScript would be great for that task:
    PageMaker 6.5: (roughly 1998)
    Creator: AB65
    Type: AD65
    PageMaker 4.1 (roughly 1992)
    Creator: ALD4
    Type: ALB4
    PageMaker 3
    Creator: ALD3
    PageMaker 2 (roughly 1988)
    Creator: ALD2
    Type: PUBF

    Hello John Blasquez,
AppleScript's filter reference by 'whose' clause can be sadly slow in filtering large set of objects. Since it has been so for a long time, you'd better find another way when it is too slow.
I'd try mdfind(1) to invoke Spotlight query (OSX10.4 or later) from command line. E.g. -
    # SHELL COMMAND (NOT tested)
    # mdfind e.g. to obtain paths of PageMaker files under Home directory.
mdfind -onlyin ~ "kMDItemKind == 'PageMaker' || kMDItemCreator == 'PageMaker'"
    # END OF SHELL COMMAND
And in AppleScript, you may use 'do shell script' to execute shell command. E.g. -
    -- SCRIPT (NOT tested)
set outfp to "" & (path to "desk") & "test out.txt"
    set query to "\"kMDItemKind == 'PageMaker' || kMDItemCreator == 'PageMaker'\""
    set s to "mdfind -onlyin ~ " & query & " > " & quoted form of POSIX path of outfp
    do shell script s
    -- END OF SCRIPT
I have not tested them, for I don't use OSX myself.
Hope this may be of some help.
    H
PS. Spotlight query will (generally) work fine for user home in local volume, but will not for any un-indexed directories, such as under /System and/or CD/DVD volumes (and perhaps under network volumes either, not sure though.)
