PC problems........i think im ready to switch to MAC

hi people. my first time here.
i make music. i have a windows xp. i have encountered 3 years of problems, with music apps, midi, audio syncing, crashing, parts dieing, you name it. well, the latest thing = i bought m-audio fast track pro audio interface cause i wanna learn pro tools. well, pc keeps freezing. ive had enough.
so i wanna buy a mac now. cause i know the general opinion is 'mac is better for music' etc. and ive used one too. i think its true.
i think i wanna get a laptop first, cause i may be moving to america in near futre. eventually desktop is the way to go, i know, laptop is more portable and i can take it with me. rather than getting desktop shipped over!
the main thing i wanna do is use pro tools m-powered on the mac. i realy wanna learn pro tools. so its not gonna be a gigantic studio set up, small, simple, trim. so i will be using the fast track pro usb audio interface.
what do you guys think? what kind of spec? is laptop good choice for me?
what do i need? in terms of specs? i mean, i need multiple usb ports, (my PC only allows one usb device at a time!)
do latptops have more than one hard drive inside? or is there only space for one hard drive inside? and so i would have to get external drive too? i want at least 2 drives. one for apps and one for audio.
and i guess ill get logic too. as im running version 5.5 on the PC.
shall i get a second hand mac or brand new from apple??
if a mac starts playing up etc, do we have to go via apple stores to fix it?
expensive to repair and troubleshoot?
would a laptop be ok for music production? strong enough? like i will have a midi keyboard hooked up, guitar into audio interface too. i will only be doing stereo one track recording at a time.
it just dawned on me last night. when my pc started crashing. 'get a mac'. they wont have half the probs ive had with pc.
ok people. thanks for any thoughts.
cheers

hi, i think you'd do well moving to an new iMac (unless you want the extra portability you would get with a MacBook or MacBook Pro). I wouldn't be tempted to go down the cheaper route of a second hand mac, especially as an audio user - done that myself and you'll be wishing you'd held out for a new one (less performance etc).
I have an iMac G5 (previous generation) which I've used for live music gigs.
My purchase at the time, swayed between the iMac and a laptop mac, but the bigger screen and hard drive capacity + extra ports of the iMac, helped me decide.
Buying now, you'd be getting a great machine for producing music on.
Not sure why you need to split your apps from your audio - worried about audio concurrent track count? The iMac has plenty of ports, including firewire and USB, so attaching an external drive would be easy.
Regarding spare parts etc, I bought mine with an additional three year service plan on top of the one year guarantee, which didn't cost too much - which should help reduce your nerves in making the step over to a mac from a pc.

The iPhone 5 is less than a year old, so all of them should still be in warranty unless they have been jailbroken or physically damaged. If you have a hardware problem as you describe the only option is to get the phone replaced by Apple or repaired by a non-authorized shop. The Apple replacement will be free at any Apple store in the country where the phone was purchased. If Apple determines that the phone was physically damaged or jailbroken it will cost $229.

iPhone warranty is not international. You will have to return your
iPhone to Saudi Arabia for repair/replacement. Either take it back
yourself or send to friend/relative for them to take to Apple. Apple
will not accept international shipments for repair nor will Apple
ship repaired/replaced iPhones out of the country where the repair
    was done.

Apple never bopthered to explain that this would happen
Your iDisk is still accessible after moving to iCloud in exactly the same way as before. Nothing is deleted until June 30th 2012.
, so I could easily have lost ALL of the files I kept on iDisk.
No, you couldn't. Firstly, nothing was deleted from your iDisk. Secondly, any files stored on your iDisk should never be your only copy. Even if your iDisk spontaneously combusted, you should keep local backups elsewhere.
Does Apple WANT people to move their storage elsewhere and stop paying Apple for it?
Yes. Apple doesn't provide such a service anymore, nor are you paying them for it.
Apple has made no effort to suggest remedies for the problem it has given iDisk users
They've provided instructions on how to download your files from your iDisk. What you do with them after that is your choice.

  • Hi, i wanted to resize my windows partion. I was thinking of using the default backup system for windows. Then switching to mac partion, deleting the bootcamp and then restoring a new enlarged partion from the backup. Is this possible?

    hi,
i wanted to resize my windows partition. I was thinking of using the default backup system for windows. Then switching to mac partion, deleting the bootcamp and then restoring a new enlarged partition from the backup. Is this possible?

I see youhave gotten recommendatons for using WinClone or CampTune.  I have used both and they both work well.
You have asked about using the WIndows 7 utility to backup your drive and restor it onto a larger partition.  I will tell you fro experience that this will probably not do what you want, and may do something that you don't want.  You can use the Windows 7 native backup tool to make a backup of your Windows 7 partition.  It will most liekly end-up making a dive image of the whole drive.  When yourestore that backup, it will try to re-create teh partitions of exactly the same size as they were when the backup was taken, so it won't increase your partition size for you.  Worse, since Windows doesn't natively know how to read./write HFS+ volumes, the backup will make a partition for your MacOS (replacing any you may have now), except that the copy restored by WIndows will be totally worthless, and you will not be able to boot MacOS from it, or even read it under MacOS.
Now I will tell you that I've also had some fairly good success working with the free tool CloneZilla.  Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, and everything else mentioned does cost you money, I thought I would throw it out.  CloneZilla is not as easy to use as the tools mentioned, but it has worked for me int hte past, so it is something to consider.  I tend to use CampTune myself, but that was because I purchased a bundle deal for them and it was included in that deal.

  • Problems with Old and New Appraisals (switch HAP00 / REPLA)

    Hello Experts,
I'm working on a HCM Global implementation and my country is joining now, and there are others countries that have already been there since 2002.
Through of switch HAP00/REPLA (transaction OOHAP_SETTINGS_PA), it is possible enable the use of Appraisal Systems subcomponent (Old Version) or Objective Setting and Appraisals subcomponent (New Version).
The others countries are using the Old version and we need use the New version.
When I activated of switch to flag u201CXu201D and after I tried create appraisals to employees through transactions APPCREATE or PHAP_PREPARE_PA, I could see only the new appraisals forms templates that Iu2019ve created through transaction HAP_CATALOG_PA and I could not see the old ones  that I created through transaction OOB1.
After this problem I have tested activation of switch HAP00/REPLA and the screen in infotype 24, tab Appraisals where appraisee changed after the switch was activated, in other hands all the Appraisals on tab  u201CAppraisals where appraiseeu201D disappeared and the columns are totally  different comparing to old version.
My question is how can I activate (flag X) the switch HAP00/REPLA and without losing the existing Appraisals on TAB u201CAppraisals where appraiseeu201D in Infotype 0024?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Lima,
The old appraisal system only supports appraisal templates with object type BA where as the new template uses object type VA. It is therefore you cannot view both of the appraisals in one tab 'Appraisals where Appraisee' or 'Appraisals where Appraiser'.
I suggest either use new or the old appraisal because by the time you run APPCREATE report for creating appraisals, the SAP systems queries the table OOHAP_SETTINGS_PA to identify which appraisal system is used. Based on the selection made in this table, the system opts for the settings.
I've went through your issue but cannot find the solution to it. It seems to be impossible.

  • Gettting Ready to switch from PC to MAC-Can I use my back-up catalogue?

Hi!  I am getting ready to switch from PC to MAC.  My pics and back-up catalogue files are on an external hard drive.  I am wondering if I can just use an up-to-date back-up catalogue to place in lightroom on my new MAC and then be up to speed.  Will that work?
    Thanks so much, Leora

Yes, this should be fine! You may wish to give your catalog (the .lrcat) a new name (prefix) when you first copy it to your Mac. This will force build a new Previews folder on the new machine, sometimes a very good thing; sometimes wholly unnecessary.....

  • Thinking of switching to mac

    Hi there.
I am thinking of getting a intel duo imac.
im a linux person, so im not into
all the user friendly stuff, yet i was very impressed
by mac os x; the integration of power user abilities with a terminal, and stunning user interface is great. but, however, i do like gaming on windows (counter strike: source, combat flight sims, Age of empires 3).
    so first off:
Linux! anybody get some gentoo running on thier mac?
how does it work compared to x86 linux?
windows stuff: games, mainly. yet maybe that educational program, demo disk, and that random program that has been not been ported to mac.
whats the best windows emulator? is it necessary to
use some commercial products like microsoft virtaulPC? VMware? can you get by on linux's wine? cedega? crossover office?
    so basically:
do emulators on linux work? if so do free ones?
if not, is there a mac version of wine? how does
virtual PC work on the intel?
Sorry for the huge post, but im quite curious and i want to ditch windows already!
    thanks
    troy

I'm only going to address your first point, being that I've not the energy in me to strain my brain for exceeding information. Anyway, you mentioned that you're not really into "user friendly stuff." Obviously we all know what you mean by this, but there's a few things you need to know before making that assumption. Yes, for the average Safari browsing Mail sending iChat chatting buyer, Mac OS X is extremely friendly, and is barley an effort. But it can get much more complicated if you want it to. I just switched to Mac from many years of Windows XP, and I must say, Windows is more user friendly in a general sense. I can sit here and honestly say that Mac OS X takes more general knowledge to run than does Windows, and I'm happy with this. Many, and I mean many, make the false assumption that "Mac is too easy, Windows is hardcore!" That's totally false, and pains me to hear/read. Running the OS isn't all in black and white like Windows, and it takes getting used to and learning the OS to run it smoothly, and to your liking. Now, I've never used Linux, but I'm going to finish by saying switching to Mac will never be a mistake.

  • Thinking about switching to Mac from Windows, Good Idea?

I've always had a PC and I've never really used or work with a Mac.  I'm a little questionable about buying one.  What all do I need to know about Macs?  I plan on using it for college and personal reasons. I hardly do anything outside of my house with my laptop. I've got an iPad and an iPhone which is what lead me to buying a Mac. I've done some research myself, but I don't know whether the Macbook Air or the Macbook Pro would be better for my uses.  Is it better to go for the 512GB flash storage or should the 256GB work out fine? I've got a lot of questions, so sorry in advance.
    Thanks for the help!

Storage size depends on use. If you store a huge photo and video library, go with the 256GB.

  • Switching to mac, questions on best place to host reference masters

I am getting ready to switch from PC to Mac and have a question I am hoping I could get some advice on (I have a lot of questions actually, but will start with this one).
I have a large library of photos and videos and plan on getting an imac for my wife and macbook pro for me (I do the tagging/organizing and video editing).
Based on what I read, I am planning on keeping the masters on a separate drive and the aperture library on my macbook pro.
Question is, am I better off keeping the masters on the imac and access that folder as an external folder on my macbook pro for the masters, or should I use a NAS drive for them?
I have an older NAS that I can probably reformat for this purpose, but I often run into complications using a NAS (offsite backup issues, connectivity issues, can't use Time Machine, ...) and have read on the forums about people having issues writing to files on NAS's...
I have a buffalo terastation pro ii, it is about 3 years old.  It is 2 terabytes.  I would get the imac with 2 terabytes and the 256gig ssd drive so the 2 tera could be dedicated to media.
Thanks in advance for any advice, appreciate it.

I am about to buy the macs, so both the desktop and macbook pro will be fast.  I plan on buying the fastest processor, 8gig of ram on the macbook, debating 8 or 16 on the imac, though from the previous thread sounds like it should be 16, and ssd on both (imac with 256 ssd + 2 TB HD, macbook with 512 sad).
I suggest ordering both Macs with the minimum RAM and adding 3rd party RAM yourself.  The task is trivial and will save you heaps.  I bought my iMac with 4GBs (that's two 2GB modules plus two empty slots), and then added two 4GB modules into the empty slots.  So I have 12GBs.  My plan is to try to live with just 12GBs until 8GB modules become affordable, and then replace the two original 2GB modules with two 8GB modules, bringing it to 24GBs.  If needed, I'd ultimately go to 32GBs by replacing the two 4GB modules I have just installed.
I think the MacBook Pro (MBP) still has only two slots, so using 4GB modules, you are limited to 8GBs.  If the architecture of the MBP supports it, you may be able to go to 16GB when 8GB modules become affordable.  But you'd need to check this.
    - using an attached harddrive on the macbook pro - Definitely a reasonable idea, but I was hoping to be able to bring up the library from anywhere in the house.  I do have gigabit ethernet throughout the house and can wire in as needed, but again, was hoping to be able to sit on the sofa and do some tagging.
Another way to achieve this still has your Aperture Library and Masters on the iMac as I recommended above.  You could use the MBP to share the screen of the iMac.  It's a standard OS X function, no software to buy.  You enable sharing on the iMac and log in from the MBP.  That way you have the function on your sofa, but the power and capacity of the iMac for your actual work.  This works fine over wifi for me via an Airport Extreme using 802.11N
    - Backup - by putting the masters on the imac i was planning on using time machine to back them up onsite, and crashplan to backup offsite.
Good plan.  TM and Crashplan are good products and free.
I'd also recommend making a second onsite backup by cloning to a pair of external drives, and periodically send one of these drives offsite.  You may find that Crashplan for offsite backup over the internet is too slow if you have a big photo shoot.
What if I plug into the gigabit ethernet whenever I am going to run aperture?  Would that allow the imac/macbook model to work?  Concerned about the performance issues described above though, even for the machines themselves.  Would copying the library nightly to my wife's computer work?  How big does a 20+k library get with referenced masters?
Size of the library depends on many factors such as choices for previews, and the amount of editing (adjustments) you do, but here is a data point.  I have 47K images, many RAW and the Library was about 60GBs, the referenced Masters another 280GBs.  I say "was" because I have let it grow by importing recent images into it.
Today we are on PCs and I use windows live photo gallery and tag all my photos, which are stored on a NAS, my wife also runs WLPG and can see all the tagging I do.  This works pretty well and is simple, I just import from the camera, show all 'untagged' photos/videos, and tag them.  I also move them to a basic folder structure to be safe.
I understand this is not as feasible on mac, and if you are wondering why I am switching, it is because I have been having a lot of stability problems with the pc's and have had enough.  I use iphones, ipads, and apple tv's.  Recently got a macbook air and really like it.  Just need to figure out how to manage the photo/video library.
A lot of my concerns about your plan are because I'm impatient.  On my MBP, it was taking about 5 seconds to render each image as I reviewed them.  I typically take a very short time to tag the images, so the computer was slower then me.  Now, with the iMac, I'm the slow link in the chain.
It may be that you are used to a leisurely tagging process, but I have no experience with WLPG.
The great things about Aperture that I really love, having come from a Photoshop background are that Aperture is always non-destructive in its editing and it is non-modal in the UI.
There is a price to be paid for non-destructive editing.  Aperture often has to go back to the Master and then apply your adjustments.  This takes resources.  But it saves you time.  And you don't have to muck around creating another external folder structure yourself, as it seems you do with WLPG.  I just import my images into "Projects" in Aperture (the Masters are Managed), and when I want to selectively change Managed Masters to Referenced Masters, I just tell Aperture to do this and that it should utilize my Project structure as the external folder structure.  Aperture does all the folder creation for me, yippee!
Finally, you may even find that the MacBook Air is good enough to do the tagging on with the shared screen approach I mentioned above, and then maybe you don't have to buy a MBP.
    HTH.  Happy to discuss further

  • Switching to MAC from Windows: How to open files in Office 2007  VMFusion?

    Dear all,
    Intro:
I switched to MAC and now cannot find the solution to a simple problem.
First: I need an Office 2007 PowerPoint FULLY compatible solution.
What did not work: IWork, NeoOffice, Office 2008 (this is not fully compatible with Office 2007 Files)
I also had problems with: Parallels (not stable, too many hangups), codeweaver crossover (office files do not even open sometimes, good idea but not suitable for serious office jobs)
Now I have VMWare Fusion with WinXP and Office 2007 as this seems to be the only truly stable and best solution to run Office 2007 on Mac
    Question:
How to open files in Office 2007 on MAC VMWare Fusion easily?
It would be nice to spotlight the file and click and it opens in powerpoint or excel or word 2007 in Virtual Machine.
The only known solution to me is to use the Windows explorer to navigate to the file and then open it from Fusion WinXP. This is very cumbersome and honestly makes me think of getting back to a windows machine as I work with office frequently.
    Thank you for your help.

Thank you for the quick reply.
Yes, I have Office 2007 installed. The problem is that to open files in Fusion virtual machine I have to use the windows explorer and navigate to the file to open it. Now that I have the mac I want to use the good feature of spotlight. So when I search and find the file I want to open I cannot click on it on the mac (or in finder) but I have to switch back to the virtual machine, locate the file again and open it from windows.
You might think - ok, why not skip the first step of using spotlight, and look up the file in windows explorer before anything else?
Correct, but I know from parallels that there is a file association possible to directly access the file in office 2007.
This does not seem possible in Fusion - So the question is whether there is a possibility on the mac to associate the file and to click on it in finder/spotlight and the office 2007 application in fusion opens the file. So far I could not find anything.
    Thanks

  • Kernel Panics - Ready to Toss My Mac Pro

I am using a Mac Pro 2.66 with 5GB ram. A couple months ago I had a kernel panic issue when I upgraded to 10.4.9. I took it in to the apple store and they reinstalled OS X and I was up and running. Now it is happening again. Pretty much all I do with the computer is run Logic Pro and related plugins and applications. Well, last night I had another kernel panic. I did a hardware test and it showed a problem with the processor (as it did the first time a couple months ago). I did an archive and install. It got me up and running again, but lost all my user settings and 3rd party software (like plugins). Once it booted up, I upgraded to 10.4.9 (I think my install CD is 10.4.7). Then I was resintalling the plugins when I got another kernel panic.
I switched to mac because I thought it was more stable and trouble free than a PC. But now I am getting fed up. Is there something simple I might be missing? Right now, I can't even boot up with the the kernel panic "you must restart" screen. Any ideas on what I can do??? Thanks.

The most important is to find the cause(s) of the kernel panics and fix it. Not sure why, if you ran Apple Hardware Test originally, that all that was done was a fresh install of the OS. Most of the time that is probably "try this first" - reinstall and see.
The first thing I do with a new computer was to run AHT. And with new RAM to run it again, and to run Memtest as well. Memory errors, being we use ECC will show in System Profile -> Memory and in the system.log and if there were kernel panics, in the panic.log.
Computers are just computers, in the end, and this one runs Vista or XP as well - very well.
OS updates should not be a problem, but sometimes it takes time for 3rd party hardware and software to "catch up" with it. And it often stresses the hardware further (and can result in 20% improvement as 10.4.8 did for CS2). 10.4.7 came in three different builds, not really "built for that OS" at all, but was / is the minimum that can boot the Mac Pro.
The trouble with even one kernel panic is that they can cause and lead to a corrupt filesystem, directory, and files. You could have been writing garbage, so a fresh OS install can make sense, and is absolutely essential after the cause has been resolved.
Apple has put more troubleshooting tips online, a "Mac 101 Help" section, and there are lots of people and sites with help and advice on how to deal with a problem like kernel panic. I'd like to see a kernel panic screen put up instructions "PLEASE RUN INSTALL DISK #1 and HOLD DOWN "D" to RUN APPLE HARDWARE TEST" followed by a way to submit the results to AppleCare if there are any errors.
