PC Programs on a Mac
I know this might be a stupid question but i would like to further my knowledge of the Mac OS. What would happen if you try to install PC software on a Mac without have loaded Bootcamp, just straight through the Mac OS. My assumptions are that it won't work but why not? Can anyone answer this question, and please don't just reply with comments that just shoot down Windows i just want the technical side of this, no Bias please, thank you.

OS X and Windows have different internal file formats for specifying how a set of data values and machine instructions to be executed on a CPU are laid out in an executable file. Thus, OS X alone doesn't know what to do with the binary data that is in a Windows executable. The contents of each executable are also dependent on the host operating system that it is to operate under, so that even if you were to load the executable machine code instructions, a Windows application wouldn't necessarily find the other pieces of the Windows OS also resident that it needs to operate. Same goes for Mac OS Intel binaries and a Windows PC.
This is the reason that applications such as Wine (or the commercial implementation for Mac, CrossOver) can and do work, however. They provide Mac OS with a translator of sorts - that is, the Windows API - which knows the Windows executable format and is able to load Windows executables into memory and provide the hooks to the other pieces of Windows necessary for such applications to run.

I am trying to install a program on my Mac Book Pro Retina from a Apple SuperDrive. Every time I run the installer, it says I do not have enough memory to install. However, I definitely have enough memory (186.74 GB). The program takes only 550 MB. Any ideas why?
Thanks for the clarification on the terms. I consider myself proficent at my computer, but not exactly in its inner-workings! I have 8 GB of memory installed.
I am still confused as to why I do not have any space for the program. This is the exact error message I get: "There is not enough free space on Macintosh HD disk. The Print Shop 2 application requires about 550 MB to be installed. Free some disk space and try again."
Thank you again for your help. -
Parallels: transferring info from a Windows program to a Mac program
I've been devoted to a Mac for a few years now, but I recently had to switch back to Windows because of its far superior voice recognition software. (I was recently disabled, and now rely on voice recognition to type.)
If I were to buy a new Mac and use my Dragon NaturallySpeaking professional software (the Windows voice recognition program) via Parallels, does anyone know if I would be able to use that to type in a Macintosh program? I understand that I could stay within the virtual Windows platform or do separate tasks on the Mac platform, but I'm not sure if I would be able to transfer the information gathered by the Windows program into a Mac program.
If I'm able to do this, it would mean I could finally switch back to a Mac. Thanks in advance! If I were to buy a new Mac and use my Dragon

As soon as video touches my Source or Program windows the Mac Pro (3,1) shuts down
Linc,
You keep showing up when I search for this problem so I hope you can help.
I'm having the same issue in Premiere and Media Encoder (but not After Effects). My Mac just restarts itself as soon as video is loaded. I can start Premiere and open a project and go through relinking media, but as soon as video touches my Source or Program windows the Mac Pro (3,1) shuts down.
I've fixed the problem temporarily two times. The first time I was troubleshooting what was wrong and wound up putting in my old video card and after that fixed the problem, I switched back to my GTX 680. I also did a driver update. After doing that I was ok for a few days so I figured it was a driver thing or maybe the card just needed to be reseated. Then when it started acting up again I figured something was going on.
So I started searching again and came across one of your posts that recommended removing CUDA. I did that and it worked perfectly for a week until about 20 minutes ago. Crashed in the middle of an edit and now each time I restart Premiere it crashes as soon as video touches my monitors.
I found this post because I specifically searched for "com.nvidia.web.NVDAResmanWeb(8.2.7)" from my Problem Report.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Darren

<Re-Titled By Host>Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the shortened log. Here's the full thing. By the way, where do you learn to read these things? Are there keywords like "error" that you just learn to look for or is it something for in depth?
Thanks,

My wife has been having problems with Safari, and many third party software and malware programs infecting her Mac Book Pro. I have tried to reset Safari but it keeps coming back, taking over Safari, changing defaults, start pages, and search engines, Etc.
Is it safe to use programs like MacKeeper, who keeps send my wife's computer message and alerts, or should I just wipe the drive and start over?
SkipI am having lot's of lag time with Safari, etc..
I'll type in a website.. and it will take 15-20 seconds to start..

I do not have a Mac but I want to give a software program for a Mac as a gift. I am not able to access the Mac store. Do I just get an iTunes card?
"Gift Card" is sometimes called a tacky gift, but if it allows the other person to get whatever they want it works.
Besides, anything purchased through App Store is usually "All Sales Final", so I think iTunes card is a good idea. -
I updated a program on my Mac Book Pro and now Safari doesn't connect to the internet but Outlook and my mail does.
I have shut the compluter down completely but I still have the problem.
Any sugestions out there?I suggest you download and install EtreCheck from http://etresoft.com/etrecheck
Run EtreCheck and publish report here.
This will give us a complete report on her Mac and allow us to help you.

I installed Nik:s suite of plug-ins for LR5 but for some reason not all of them were installed. In the end I uninstalled all of the Nik programs from my Mac but before I reinstalled them I opened LR5 again to check. Under "photo" and "edit in" the plug-ins were still presented but no programs opened, of course. after reinstalling the plug-ins one of the programs appeared twice in the list but not the others. I´m going to reinstall them again and I´m wondering if there is anyway of erasing the links to the plug-ins under "photo" and "edit in" ???
Wow that was really quick, thank you so much. Im not sure at all which version it was because i said it was around 4 years ago he bought it. I know it isn't under his username, since he's a PC person (ugh) so i know its probably registered to one of our actual names. isn't there some way to look it up since we did register it, because I'm not even sure where the disks are from when we bought it (we've moved a lot and also have two storage lockers, i know i would have kept it with other disks) but my cd rom drive is actually broken on my computer as well ( i think it got stepped on and is now squished and won't eject or run disks.)
So is there anyway they can look up that its registered to one of our names since we did register it when we bought and installed it, or do i really have to find the disk with some sort of proof of purchase (i know there would be no receipt after all this time)
either way, ill do what you suggested to the best of my abilities and thank you so much for answering my questions, i can't even open the program as its incompatible and find out the info from that) so I'm in a bit of a pickle and your response was so thorough and it didn't seem to be posted long enough to even write a well researched response, thanks, all the best,

I am not able to compile a program on my mac...
I am not able to compile a program on my mac; i am getting the following message :"Class names, 'ClassName.Java', are only accepted if annotation processing is explicitly requested". I am new to programming, and I am using a MAC. Any suggestions? I am typing: "Javac ClassName.Java" at the command prompt.
You might want to be posting to the developer forum here:

Is there a good apple based alternative to the persona finance software program "quicken for mac"? It is a poorly supported program.
I switched from Quicken on a Windows computer to iBank on a Mac. It is a very good program, has very good free download connections to financial institutions (optional), and very good reports. The only negative is that it is just different enough from Quicken that there is a learning curve and the first month or two were frustrating -- but that is likely true of anything that you might change to. http://www.iggsoftware.com/ibank/

Is the difference the device you're creating your app on, or for?iOS Developer Program is only for those who wish to develop iDevice apps. Mac program is for those only developing Mac applications. If you wish to do both, then you need to enroll in both programs.

Predictive typing program for the Mac?
Has anyone heard of a predictive typing program for the Mac?
I am looking for a computer program for typing that "guesses" what word you want based on the first few letters. I have trouble typing because of physical disabilities. Voice recognition is a no go (I also have trouble with my voice).
I know cell phones have this for texting, but I've never seen it for a regular computer. An application I could type in right on my Mac, then cut and paste to other applications like Word, email, etc. Apparently there is a program called "Penfriend" for the PC that does exactly this, but I'm having trouble finding anything Mac-compatible.
Has anyone heard of a company that provides this kind of software? Any ideas on which discussion board might know?
I have a 2006 Macbook Pro.
Grateful for any help!

2006 Powerbook G5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)
Mac OS X (10.4.3)Sorry for the delay, I was waiting for a "good arm" day to start typing!
Were you using the mouse to select words? You can set
hotkeys so you can do it with the keyboard if that
would be easier - you can use a sequence like
option-1,option-2, etc., or whatever else you can
type easily.
I tried both selecting words with the mouse, and with the coded numbers on the keyboard... I think this may be a problem for me with any predictive typing program, the whole needing-to-pick-up-your-hand thing. KeyStrokes seems about as good as you're going to get (honestly, all those languages, like magic). Maybe with a different keyboard, if I can place the numbers closer to the letters. I'll keep trying.
There's no users group that I know about. I keep
meaning to start a Yahoo list for OS X users who use
assistive tech, but I have so many things that I want
to do *wry grin* Maybe one day...
That's a great idea -- I know there must be something out there, but I've mostly found disease-specific boards (ALS, etc.).

Learning Programming on the Mac
Hi All
I have decided to learn programming and hopefully turn it into a career. This current economy is killing off my current trade. I would be starting from scratch as I have very limited understanding of programming, or the fundamentals. But I have a very strong Mac and general computer skills.
From my research I've decided to learn C then C++. So I've picked up The C Programming Language Book (Dennis M Rictche) and Programming Principles and Practices Using C++ (Bjarne Stroutruup). As well I will be entering a collage course.
I am giving myself about 3 months to get comfortable then start designing some software of my own creations. Plus creating software for other platforms.
Software for the Mac is it necessary to learn Object C? And would only having a PPC Mac be a limitation of learning the languages, as this is all I have at the moment. It does run 10.5. I will install Xcode as well. Is there anything else in terms of setting up the computer to learn and create software that I need to do?
ThanksHey, Knitsu -- I know you've since asked this question in a separate thread (welcome to the forums by the way!), but I wanted to touch on one point that you mentioned here. By the way, good for you for looking up and old thread and reading through it -- not enough people do that before they post a new thread (myself included).
but from my understanding, just looking up eduation learning in the toronto area, most schools have this object oriented programming and C learning for windows systems. Now would this be OK to learn, and still be able to use in the MAC environment IE: with Dashcode and Xcode?
First off, Dashcode is just for developing Dashboard widgets, so that's the only thing you would be using that for -- Xcode is the main Mac IDE that you'll be using to develop your applications, in addition to Interface Builder. You write your code in Xcode, and you put together your GUI (graphical user interface) in Interface Builder.
Secondly, to answer your question about learning on Windows and whether or not it will apply to Mac programming, the answer is yes, and no. As far as the C language goes, the answer is yes, more or less. If you take a class for learning C on Windows, what you learn will be directly applicable to Mac programming. The C language is the same language, whether you are programming it on Mac OS X or on Windows. That being said, there will be some differences in the overall experience of programming C on Mac versus on Windows. For that reason, if you take a class on C using Windows, I would buy a book on C programming on the Mac to read along with your course to help you apply what you are learning to the Mac. For this I would recommend the Apress book "Learn C on the Mac", since it is the best book for beginning Mac programming anyways, in my opinion (see my post in the thread you started).
Now, as far as a class on object-oriented programming goes, your C class won't cover this, since C is not an object-oriented language. If you take a Windows-based class on OOP (object-oriented programming), it will probably teach it to you in the context of C++, if you're lucky, but more likely pseudocode. Pseudocode is code that simulates a real programming language, but it isn't -- it's just English words put together to teach you how programming works on a basic level. Personally, I think this is an absolutely horrible practice, since it tried to teach you programming without teaching you a programming language, which is not only less effective (for most people, in my opinion), but a waste of time as well, since that time could be going to learning a real language like C. Pseudocode might look like this:
if this = that then
write "this string"
end if
Something like that (I'm not a master of pseudocode -- I took one class on OOP that taught using it a ways back). Anyways, for this reason, it would be much better if you could find a class that taught OOP using a real language, which would probably be C++ if it was a Windows-based class. C++ is a superset of the C language, which means that it has everything C has plus extra (the "extra" here is object-oriented support, so C++ is kind of like an object-oriented version of C, although it also adds other features as well), and C++ is the OO version of C that Windows programming is likely to use.
Now, Mac OS X allows developers to use C++ as well, but Mac has its own superset of the C language that it prefers you use instead of C++ -- it's called Objective-C. Objective-C is a superset (an extension) of the C language, much like C++, but the main difference (besides the fact that it's a different language) is that Objective-C, unlike C++, was designed with Mac programming in mind. For this reason, it would be best for you to go about learning object-oriented programming using Objective-C. However, the concepts you learn in a class on object-oriented programming using C++ (or even pseudocode) will still be applicable to Mac programming. The language won't be, but the concepts will be. In other words, you will still have to go back and learn OOP through Objective-C at some point, but the concepts you learned in your C++ or pseudocode Windows-based class will help you do so, since all OO languages revolve around similar concepts (objects, in particular).
I hope this helped to answer some of your questions, and best of luck with your journey toward Mac programming!
