PC Reset failed, recovery USB corrupted...

Tried to reset my WT8, but something went wrong and partitioning was interrupted with an error message.
I have USB recovery stick - but it seems to be corrupted and I'm stuck.
Any idea on how to get going again?
Cheers,
rikluost

If all else fails, Toshiba will supply recovery media. But the S&H cost is exorbitant.
For US machines, go to Get Recovery Media.
Elsewhere, go to the Backup Media Online Shop.

  • [SOLVED] can't boot from ssd after "reset" from recovery usb flash drive

I have a Twist s230u with the original Hitachi 500GB hdd, running Windows 8.1.  I want to replace the Hitachi 500GB hdd in my Twist s230u with a PNY 240GB SSD that i've purchased.
While running Windows from the Hitachi HDD drive I followed the "create a recovery drive" procedure to create a recovery usb.  Then I removed the Hitachi HDD from the s230u and installed the PNY 240 SSD in its place.  I booted the s230u from the recovery flash drive that I made.  I selected the "Reset Your PC" option and then the option to wipe all partition/files.  After the Reset completes, I try booting from the SSD but am unable to do so.  I just go back to the F12 boot menu.
I put the SSD in a drive dock attached to another computer.  Disk Management shows the partitions as follows -
I've looked at the partitions on the SSD after the Reset - Disk Management console shows a 1000 MB Recovery partition, a 260MB EFI System partition, and a 221GB primary partition with volume label Windows8_OS.  It is not marked as Boot, Page File, or Crash Dump.
Diskpart shows an an additional 128MB Reserved partition between the EFI partition and the primary partition.
I do notice that the 10.6 Lenovo Recovery partition is not present - but I did make sure that I included that partition on the recovery key - though the files on the recovery key only use 8.03 GB for some reason.  Made the key on two different flash media.
Diskpart also shows the following for the SSD:
    DISKPART> attributes disk
    Current Read-only State : No
    Read-only : No
    Boot Disk : No
    Pagefile Disk : No
    Hibernation File Disk : No
    Crashdump Disk : No
    Clustered Disk : No
(It also looks like this when I run DISKPART from the recovery media with the SSD inside the internal drive bay of the s230u.)
When I did the Reset on the SSD in the s230u, and when I tried to boot from it - I had the Secure Boot disabled, the "Legacy Boot first" option set, etc.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to be able to boot Windows 8.1 from this SSD in the s230u?  I've been working on this for a couple of days.
(I also tried cloning the HDD to the SDD using Minitool Partition Wizard, Macrium Reflect, Clonezilla, Acronis, etc - the SSD wouldn't boot after those clone operations either, and I thought maybe I'd have better luck with a reinstall from the USB recovery media.
(I also tried installing from a Windows 8 iso I burned to a DVD.  I got a product id mismatch message when I tried to install from that, and I was not allowed to proceed.)

well, I seem to have solved my own problem.  Maybe someone will learn from my mistakes.
I went into System Setup, went to the Startup tab, and changed the boot setting from "Both" to "UEFI Only".  After doing this I booted from my USB recovery drive, and Reset the PC.  After the Reset, I booted the s230u from the ssd, and I booted into a fresh Windows 8 installation.
It seems that the Reset operation could not work properly while the boot setting was "Both" (UEFI and Legacy) and "Legacy First."
I got a clue when I looked at the contents of the EFI System Partition and there was nothing there except a Temp folder. The EFI System Partition had not been properly written by the Reset operation.  I got some helpful hints on how to see the contents of the EFI System Partition here - http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/2013/12/how-to-repair-the-efi-bootloader-in-windows-8/#.U-Qz2_ldW7q
I've also buggered up my original HDD now, so that it won't boot to Windows now.  Now to fix that!

    have a new HP laptop:

Several hours after its first boot the laptop failed to load and I got a message saying it can't load win 8.1 os.
(this was two month ago and since then I am trying to recover it without any success).
HP US support sent me a recovery usb device with win 8.1
Before connecting it and starting the recovery:
    1. I did a System Diagnostics. All Passed (memory & hard drive).
    2. I reset the bios to default factory settings (and change the 'usb 3.0 configuration in pre-os to Auto, in case the usb is 2.0).
    3. I connected the recovery usb directly (no hub).
    I started the recovery...
I finished the "factory image recovery preparations" stage successfully:
I entered Skip and after that i removed the recovery usb device and continue the recovery by pressing "Continue":

  • Z87-G65 power issue with usb(port reset failed)

    All,
I'm having an issue with my motherboard and wanted to see if anyone had suggestions.  In windows 8.1 if I have my webcam or external hard drive plugged in USB.  I get this error the the USB device is not recognized and the port reset failed(code 43).  I noticed when I turn on the PC and it's booting the light on the webcam and hard drive flash like it's not drawing enough power to stay on.  The boot sticks at 9c on the screen and I have to reset.  When windows boots they turn off.    Since it's before windows boots I think this is either a MB issue or a power supply issue.  I have a corsair 750 watt power supply so plenty of power.  Any ideas?

  • Lion recovery usb reset?

I recently made my 8gb lacie USB into a lion recovery USB, and I now need to use it as a normal USB again but it is not read when I plug it in. Does anyone if or how I could reformat or reset this?
    Thanks Alfie

Thank you both (baltwo and Ho Lee MACkeral) for the helpful tips.  Unfortunately even after confirming that the USB was partitioned as a GUID partition and rebuilding a new Recovery USB I'm still unable to boot into recovery mode.  I'm currently reinstalling SL and will patch, then re-download my Lion.  From there I should be able to reinstall my image from my Time Machine backup.  Lengthy process, but I'm not really sure what else to do at this point.  Sigh.
Once I have everything back to normal I'll continue working on getting Windows 7 into bootcamp.

    Hey Captain_Nemo,
Sometimes there are just areas of the HDD that need repairing.
Please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices. ONCE YOU HAVE BACKED UP YOU SYSTEM--- Start by turning on the computer and immediately start pressing F11, Select the section that says you need to perform a repair of Windows or go to safe mode with command prompt.
Can get to safe mode with command prompt?  sfc /scannow would scan your system for errors at the command prompt. You could check this Microsoft document on system recovery options. F10 BIOS setup and restore BIOS factory defaults.
     Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Windows 8 Recovery USB causes UEFI error: "Grub error: Can't find gpt 7" [FIXED]

    Hello everyone,
Here is my situation.  I had a dual boot setup on my toshiba S855D (Win 8/Ubuntu 12.10).  After a few months my win 8 install was giving me strange errors.  I decided to do a full reinstall using the recovery USB I made. (I had reinstalled once before)  When I plugged in my USB after restarting the computer (in USB as first boot), I got the error: 'Grub error. Can't find gpt 7' If I tuned off UEFI, the computer could at least detect the USB but not do a reinstall.  Thinking it was a Grub error I formatted the HD (using an ubuntu liveUSB).  The problem persisted. I installed boot-repair on ubuntu and tried that, but no effect.  I have tried to install an updated bios from the CD image in the bios zip, but it wouldn't execute the commands in the ini file.  I even tried to install an old xp disk I had to see if I could install the bios update that way, but the windows install  repeatedly froze.
Quick version: dual boot (win8/ubuntu)->try to reinstall win8, "error: Grub Error: Can't find gpt 7", when usb is attempted to be booted from. ->Wiped hdd, but problem persisted. -> tried many ways to fix, but nothing works.
I have been reading many forums for the past few days, and nothing looks to work.  Any and all help would be really helpful.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I finally got it!
After much poking around the internet, I was finally able to identify my problem.  My bootx64.efi in the EFI/Boot folder wasn't working.  I found this out by putting UEFI shell on another usb and using that to test my *.uefi files.  Thankfully, I had a backup of my EFI folder from my initial Ubuntu install.  This had a backup made my ubuntu. (bkpbootx64.uefi) I ran the backup and the USB worked!
On another forum someone (Agent268) said this, which may help.  I'm guessing you need to have a windows pe DVD/USB to make this work though.
"You should be able to use DISM to manually reimage this bad boy using the WIM or SWMs on that USB recovery flash drive."
Hope my research helps someone out there.  Cheers to everyone who looked.

  • Windows 8 Reset fails to wipe drive

Hello, First off the ultimate issue right now (then the history).  And sorry for the length but I wanted to be as detailed as possible.
Last night I did a full Windows Reset on a Windows 8.0 installation. I did this because of issues I was having and the possibility of a virus.  This version of the Reset is suppose to take several hours and reformat the drive so that it is completely
clean (in case you give the laptop away or just want to start from scratch - I just wanted to start over).  BUT when I start it up there are still data / files from my old install.  My Internet Explorer Favorites still exist on the C drive AND all
my saved passwords are still listed when I look at the Web Credentials.  So the Reset failed, at least to some extent.  NOTE - I only ran the Reset on the C drive as that is where Windows is installed.  My Data, Music and Program Install files
    are on separate partitions.
The History:  I was starting to have issues with Windows 8.1.  It was slow when browsing and I kept getting multiple errors such as:
    - "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address",
    - Various DCOM errors
    and
    - Constant / Multiple errors where "The [xxx] service terminated unexpectedly...  ".  These errors involved many different services and included service host, crypto (something), DCOM, windows live, networking...
countless.  The event ID's were generally in the 7021 - 7050 range.
The final straw was when the laptop (an ASUS S550C) would randomly shut off or terminate exporer.exe so I had a blank screen.  I had already run a full scan with Malwarebytes and Panda without any notifications.
So I initially did a Refresh.  I ran windows update and installed all the updates (with some problems but overcame them) and upgraded to 8.1.  It didn't help.  Same constant errors.  So I decided to do the
    basic Reset.
After the Reset I updated Windows but did NOT upgrade to 8.1.  I only installed Logitech Setpoint and Office 2010.  ALSO what was odd to me is that some data / files that were on my previous installation (like Internet Explorer
Favorites and History) were still present as were all my saved passwords.  Also still tons of errors, mostly DCOM, DHCP not assigning address and MULTIPLE "The [xxx] service terminated unexpectedly... ".  A google search mentioned
a possible virus with these errors.
So I uninstalled my installed programs and last night ran the complete Windows Reset (the one that is suppose to take several hours and completely wipe the drive so you can get rid of the computer or do a complete start from scratch.  I haven't
done any updates or installs.  BUT guess what.. my IE favorites are still present on the C drive AND all my saved passwords still exist under credentials.  So the Reset (which is suppose to reformat the drive) obviously didn't work.  There were
a few errors during the Reset but appear to have been near the end including:
    - Error - "Crash dump initialization failed!"  [Source = volmgr; event ID = 6]
     - Warning - "Profile notification of event Delete for component {DE3F3560-3032-41B4-B6CF-F703B1B95640} failed, error code is ???"  [Source = User Profile Service; event ID = 1534]
     - Warning - "Profile notification of event Delete for component {D63AA156-D534-4BAC-9BF1-55359CF5EC30} failed, error code is The system cannot find the path specified"  [Source = User Profile Service; event ID = 1534]
    - Warning - "The maximum file size for session "ReadyBoot" has been reached. As a result, events might be lost (not logged) to file "C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\ReadyBoot\ReadyBoot.etl". The maximum files size is currently
    set to 20971520 bytes"   [Source = Kernel-EventTracing; event ID = 4]
    - Error - "Session "ReadyBoot" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188  [Source = Kernel-EventTracing; event ID = 3]
The good news is I'm not getting the "service terminated" errors.  Mainly just the DHCP not assigning an address errors.
ANY IDEAS? Before starting to update and install everything again I would like to know it's safe to do so.  I'm concerned because if there was a virus and the Reset didn't actually wipe the drive then it may still exist.  And
    why wouldn't the Rest work?

    Hi,
First I have a question: Did you redirect any folder under your user profile to another location?
Regarding current information, the event about Readyboot will not affact your operation of this computer.
ReadyBoot is used by the ReadyBoost service that optimizes the boot time of your computer to a minimum.

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?

Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

  • How to restore Windows 8 from a recovery USB on a tablet w/o physical keyboard?

I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad tablet that came with Windows 8 Pro:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?DocID=PD026486
The first thing that I usually do is create a recovery disc. This time I was able to create a recovery USB drive. But then I thought of something -- how would I recover from it?
I asked at the Lenovo community site and people told me to connect a USB keyboard and press Fn + F12 during booting. The issue is that, first, I do not have a physical keyboard for it. Do I really need to pay $50+ just to boot from a USB drive? And
secondly, even if I got a physical keyboard this tablet has only one mini USB port so if I use it up to connect a USB keyboard, how would I connect the USB flash drive?
So can someone clarify this for me? Again, all I need to know is how to restore from a recovery USB drive.

    Hello Again Zubedi35!
Ok, I think I have it covered. First, you need a key to be able to proceed with the installation process. When you get a key, go online and download the windows 8 usb installer to be able to install a properly formatted
installation of windows 8 to your usb drive; make sure you use a windows 7 or windows 8 computer to format and install windows 8 to your usb- very important! Once you have windows 8 installed to your usb drive, all you need is the key and the installation
process on your pc will be a cinch. But before you get ready to do the installation of windows 8 to your desired computer, first you must do one thing- reformat your hard drive again. Since you said you have another computer (preferably a desktop), you may
place the hard drive from your laptop that you are trying to install windows 8 on and place that hard drive into the other computer- but you will need an external device to place the hard drive in to be able to reformat it if you don't have a desktop computer
with an extra bay (slot to put an extra hard drive into) to place the hard drive in and perform the reformatting. I would try to find someone with a desktop that has an extra bay to place that hard drive in and reformat it (it must be a computer with a windows
7 or 8 operating system on it so that you may be able to see the drive and perform the reformatting process. If you choose to do this, you must turn the desktop computer off and open the side of the computer then connect the hard drive to the sata connectors
of the open bay. Then, turn the computer back on and go to 'My Computer' (on windows 7 computer) or click the little folder (File Explorer) on the taskbar and look in 'Devices and Drives' and the hard drive should show up next to the main drive (Local
Disk C:). Formatting your hard drive is just like formatting your usb- just uses a different method of connecting. Try and purchase an external USB Disk Drive to install windows 8 to your pc from a CD if you choose not to go through this process of installation
by usb. I hope this helps and please notify me if you have any other questions or if you need help through the installation process- enjoy your Windows 8 computer!

  • How to create a system recovery USB drive?

My U845-S406 crashes every 15 minutes with a BSOD referencing iastor.sys.
Multiple diagnostics say it is all good.
Multiple virus softwares say it is clean.
It crashes even quicker in safe mode.
I have the latest Toshiba raid drivers, but updated to a more recent Intel set.  The error changes to iastora.sys, and goes back to iastor.sys when I switch back to the Toshiba drivers.
I booted holding down 0, and told it to restore; but it promptly crashes.
I made a W7 disk and tried to load it, but it promptly crashes.
As a last resort before throwing the computer out,  I want to create a system recovery USB drive, format the harddrive and try recovering from the USB; but I don't have the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator (or any Toshiba software at all...)  I downloaded a copy and ran it, but it says I don't have a HDD Recovery Area.
I know I have one because 1) I can access it by hold down 0, and 2)Partition Wizard showes it.
So, how can I create a system recover USB drive (or make Recovery Media Creator find the HDD recovery Area...)
Interestingly, the other day it spent 90 minutes installing a W7 update without a problem, but crashed immediately when done.  Maybe that means something.

Please zip up a few of the corresponding *.dmp files from the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and attach them to your reply.
So the procedure in the section Creating recovery media (p. 53 in the User's Guide) doesn't work? Exactly where does it go wrong?

how to make a  bios recovery usb?

    Hi!
You can download new BIOS versions on the Toshiba website. Search for your model and select BIOS update
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com
Download the right file and follow these instructions:
Extract the zip file containing the BIOS upgrade to a temporary folder.
Make sure that all open files are saved and all applications are closed.
Execute the extracted *.exe file in the temporary folder. Follow the instructions on the screen.
The BIOS update will be done automatically.
After a few minutes the Notebook will restart automatically.
    Bye
