PC running extremly slow with iTunes

Hello all,
Question is why my laptop would be running extremly slow with cover flow when it has more than enough horsepower to run almost any application (2.33 dual core, 512 graphics card, 2gig ram). iTunes runs just fine on my work laptop with cover flow, and its specs arent on par with my personal laptop. The only difference i can think of is that the work laptop (the good one) is running xp pro and the home is running vista 32bit. the other difference i can think of is that at home, all the music is stored via external HD while on the work laptop the files are stored locally on the laptops hard drive.
any advice would be greatly appreciated
Cheers!

Vista has been reported to be a bit more buggy/laggy/unstable with iTunes. Music running of an external will also be noticeably slower and more jumpy than running off an internal. You answered your own question.

Dreamweaver has been running extremely slow with reflow.css. Wondering if anyone else is encountering this issue? If so, any fixes or known variable that causes this to happen?

I haven't see this. Can you describe a little more about what you are doing and what parts are slow? If there are specifc steps you can also file a bug with the Dreamweaver team:

  • Macbook Pro running extremely slow with version OS X 10.10.2

Since updating to Yosemite, version OS X 10.10.2 on my 2010 MacbookPro, it has been running extremely slow in all applications.  Everything from booting up and shutting down to getting mail open, printing or using Safari takes a long time!  Lots of beach balls spinning and other delays.  I have 4 GB of memory and 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

When you see the beachball cursor, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • IPhone 3G running extremely slow with iOS4

Anyone else having issues with their iPhone 3G running extremely slow since the iOS4 update? I am mainly noticing it in my messages, when typing a text message, it takes about 20 seconds to respond after touching the letters and when receiving a text message when in the middle of replying the previous messages disappear up, and you must swipe your finger down the screen to get them back.
Any suggestions to help resolve it?

All of us 3G users are waiting.
I just got off the phone with Apple Tech Support (I have the Apple Protection Plan for the 3G iPhone) and he had we do a reset as a new user.
After reading these recent posts, it is obvious that Apple owes us a real fix to their software upgrade.
It's very frustrating to use this phone now especially when it ran so well with the previous OS, 3.1.3.
The fact that Apple does not allow or support downgrading (or, in this case, an "upgrade") to the previous version or a fix now, is not favorable to the company's customers or image, in my opinion.
I specifically asked the tech when a fix will be coming out and he said in a couple of weeks, but that is mainly for the antenna issue. When pressed for an answer to our problems, he said he wasn't sure if that update to version 4 will address the 3G issues.
He suggested I post "product suggestions" @ apple.com/feedack and said that Apple does read these comments as well as the Discussion Boards....
Hey, Apple, if you're reading this......Help us out already with this software mess or face losing customers!!

  • Anyone having trouble with computer running extremely slow with the color wheel continuously spinning.?

Updated with Yosemite and think that's when my problems started with my IMac being very slow.  The color wheel keeps popping up and spinning not allowing me to move forward on typing or moving between websites etc.  Extremely slow and never had this problem before Yosemite.  Any real answers to this out there?  I was on the phone with apple support for two and a half hours the other day and it's not made any difference in what the tech had me do to resolve this issue.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1266 ' 0.5 0.25 10 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 1 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1 250 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20 2000     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

  • Windows 8.1 running extremely slow with high disk utilization

My recently purchased Toshiba laptop with Windows 8.1 with 16 GB and I7 processor takes 3 minutes to start new programs. Running programs like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDF reader, etc stop in their track with every few minutes and show a circling
cursor. Task Manager shows 100% Disk Utilization all the time.
I ran McKAfee as well as Kaspersky to see if this was a virus/Trojan issue. Both came up with nothing.
At this point the laptop (though spanking new) is completely USELESS and I have no hopes of using it !!!!!
I noticed from many forums that I am not the only one facing this issue. The complaint count for this issue is growing in multitudes.
    Please help!

    Try these steps.
    Open task manager
Click on processes tab. You can see all the apps and processes that are consuming memory.
Click on top of column showing the memory. This will arrange them in ascending or descending order of how much memory is consumed.
Find the ones which is consuming maximum memory
Uninstall if you don’t need the program or app. Re-configure or re-install the software or app if it is an important one.
    Hope it helps.

  • Imac 27' is running extremely slow with pinwheel

Ok so everytime I open any program I get the pinwheel for up to 10 min.  If I go online and try to log into any account I get the same thing.  If I get into my email I can't attach files and it takes about 7 minutes to log into my accounts.  As soon as it comes out of sleep i get the pinwheel. Some one please help!!!!
quick update, I just tried to check and verify my software system. When it came out of sleep I had the piwhell for over 10 min.  Shut down for now.

sounds like your machine is going the same way as mine - good luck.
My son convinced me, after many years of suffering the indignities of Microsoft, that Apple computers were the way to go. So we purchased a shiney new, top of the range iMac 27" in November 2010.This machine has been plagued with countless problems and has been a horror from day one.
Foolishly, I struggled on with this machine only to suffer the ultimate indignity of total hard disk failure. This left me with a £1600 paperweight. Apple computers could not be less helpful. The machine should just be replaced – it is obviously a dud.
No chance with Apple computers –happy to replace the hard disk of a machine that is only 18 months old at a further, extortionate, £250+VAT cost to me. This is outrageous.

  • MacPro  Running Super slow with Photoshop CS5

My MacPro is running extremely slow with Adobe Photoshop CS5. I have tried uppping the ram usage to over 14 gigs of ram and its still even slower than my macbook pro. the healing brush is the slowest, but even layer masking seems to lag a lot. how can I fix this?

There are dozens of threads, faq, guides, tips on how to configure a Mac especially for CS5. Best places to start.
    http://macperformanceguide.com/index_topics.html
    http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshopCS5-Intro.html
    Scratch drive or array
    Disable Spotlight on scratch
Move your files to scratch for work and then save as you go and move back to media drive when done
fast system drives. maybe even SSD if you can, or 10K 600GB VR
Upping RAM helps if you work with large images, layers, etc (in some cases 16 or 24 or 32GB, and if you can run in 64-bit mode get a little better).
    Some specs on the setup?

  • Dreamweaver cc 2014 running extremely slow

Dreamweaver CC 2014 is running extremely slow - with essentially no response (using split mode or any other mode). My version of CC runs perfectly - quick & clean. I haven't changed anything - all I did was install the new CC 2014 and tried it out and it basically doesn't work. What is going on? I have a 2012 iMac - my OS is updated plenty of RAM, etc. I have a lot of fonts open but this has never effected any other program - just wondering if maybe behind the scenes its reading all of that stuff (why would it?).

    1.  Re: Dreamweaver cc 2014 running extremely slow
           Preran
I've determined why MY Dreamweaver 2014 was "slow." BUT AGAIN, I HAD NO PROBLEM running CC with the exact setup.
I'm running and I-Mac with OSX (version 10.9.4) 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 and 16 GB of 1600 MHz DDR2 ram.
I have 8 exterior drives with 10 Terabytes total.
I noticed lots of activity accessing drives when running Dreamweaver 2014. I unhooked all drives AND DREAMWEAVER 2014 acted "normal" with it's spinning cursor retired.
Again, no problem with all of the drives on while using Dreamweaver CC.
    Any thoughts from DreamWeaver/Adobe?
    Thanks,
    Greg

  • Hello, I have a macbook pro late 2011 15 inch with 4 gb ram. My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Is there a fix?

My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Furthermore, when just using safari to watch streaming television, my computer gets really slow, and locks up, and the dock appears blank and I sit here frustrated. Anytime i wake up my computer, my keys don't respond and I've waited at most 3 minutes untill i can type in my password. Even sometimes when i type in my password and hit enter, it takes forever to open up my mac. I have barely used any storage in my macbook, since i only use it for college, and I have run clamscan wiht no viruses showing... Any ideas?

when just using safari to watch streaming television, my computer gets really slow, and locks up, and the dock appears blank
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

my final cut is running extremely slow after having for 6 months.  I use external hard drives and save nothing on my computer.  it takes a long time to render now. do you think something is wrong with computer. took it to mac store but they fail to help me.  I have a 13 inch mac book pro 10.6.8 8gb 2.3 gfz intel core i5

What did Apple tell you about what they did (or did not) find here?
See if working on the main disk is any faster.
USB2 is glacial, as I/O interconnects go.  And USB2 disks have been known to fail, or sometimes to drop back to USB1 speeds, too.  FireWire 800 is substantially faster than USB2, but still not as fast as the internal drive connections can provide.
Put another way, start varying your configuration, and see which configuration changes (still) have the problem, and which don't.

  • MacBook Pro running extremely slow- something with RAM maybe?

I'm using a MacBook Pro, and yesterday, out of nowhere it stated running extremely slow and constantly freezes. I did some research and ended up looking in the Activity Monitor, and it seemed like I have no free space available - so I deleted a bunch of files and the computer is still running exactly as slow as it was before. My stats on the activity monitor are:
    Free: 9.7 MB
    Wired: 851.7 MB
    Active: 2.11 GB
    Inactive: 1.05 GB
    Used: 3.99 GB
    VM Size: 162.33 GB
    Page ins: 541.0 MB
    Page outs: 4.02 GB
    Swap Used: 10.41 GB
Finder says I have 317.3 GB available. What's the problem here?

Safe mode prevents almost all third-party software from running such as preference panes, plug-ins, extensions, and launchagents and launch daemons. Normal boot lets all that run. So the issue is with one or more of these third-party items. Perhaps you can download EtreCheck 1.9.10 and run it when your system is at it's worst state. Then post the results here for us to check.
    Also,
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.

Recently my IMac with osx 10.4.11 has been running extremely slow. It takes forever for Safari to switch screens. You can hear the computer constantly working. To the point where I have tried restarting.I have run Sophos antivirus software and have found nothing. Any suggestions?

First remove the antivirus software, it's possible that could be part of your problem! Slow Mac's can be caused by many different issues, including failing HD's, a HD that is too full (OS X really likes to have about 10-15% of the HD available), insufficient RAM, etc.. To troubleshoot your problem I'd recommend looking over 25 Ways to Speed Up Your Mac.

  • Macbook Pro running extremely slow since updating to Yosemite

    Hello All,
I am new to the community and I'm hoping your pooled expertise can assist me with my issues. I went ahead and posted the results of my diagnostic scan below. My main concerns are that my Macbook Pro is now extremely slow after OSX updates. Also, laptop is running extremely hot to touch. I have mentioned other ongoing issues. I offer thanks in advance for any assistance.
    Problem description:
    Macbook Pro 13":
    Purchased in mid-2010.
    Most Recent Issue (Main Concern):
    (1) I recently updated OS X from Mountain Lion to Maverick. Computer began running extremely slow and “jerky.”
(1.1) Shortly after this I updated to OS X Yosemite. Computer runs, and types, even slower than before.
Ongoing Issues (Greater than one year):
    (1) Extremely short battery life (may last two hours on full charge)
    (2) Macbook runs extremely hot to touch (fan runs continuously but can’t begin to keep it cool)
    (3) SD Card reader doesn't recognize/open an SD card when inserted.
    Lex Cschellings Requested the Following:
No obvious elements in the list.
This may well be a dying disk and/or a very bad battery.
    Do following:
make a new etrecheck list and in the problem description put what Applications->Utilities->SystemInformation says about the battery (under the Power heading in the left panel): give cycle count and battery condition.
Then post the link in a new thread.
In the meantime the crash report is probably a French Dictionary issue (font? garcon garçon) you have installed, uninstall that and see if it happens again.
