PC's disappear from Airport Extreme Network

I have an Airport Extreme and three computers (MacPro and 2 PC's) Ethernet hard-wired to it for internet connection -- which works fine on all three computers. I set up a network between the three computers about a month ago and it worked perfectly for two weeks, then the two PC's disappeared from the Mac's Finder, and the "shared" marker also disappeared. About a week later, everything reappeared and again worked fine -- now it is gone again. I am confused because there is nothing wireless in play and when the computers appear in the "shared" list, everything works flawlessly, for as long as it lasts. I have been reading about a possible problem with Airports losing printers when attached through a hub, but that is not the case here either, the printers work fine. Does anyone have any thoughts? I really appreciate your time.

check the network setting... I mean all PC + Mac accessing the same network group... check on your airport utility - advanced - wins and select the workgroup named workgroup from the drop down menu, or whatever the name of the network is. also on systems preferences - sharing - file sharing should be on, and select options on file sharing and select afp, ftp and smb.
all these things always with firewalls off. keep firewalls off until you see the pc always and then start working on firewall settings

  • Constant Disconnection from Airport Extreme Networked iMac (late 2009)

I keep trying to copy fairly large files (2-7GB) over my Aiport Extreme (latest—5th generation) network from a early 2011 Macbook Pro to a 27" iMac (late 2009), and I keep getting disconnected from the iMac while the file is copying. I've tried repairing permissions on every computer in the house and restarting them, but I'm still having issues. I have no issues copying files to another late 2011 Macbook Pro in the house, so it seems to be happening only when I copy them to the iMac. The iMac is running Snow Leopard and the Macbook Pros are running Lion, so could that have something to do with it?
Additionally, I had been trying a wireless extended network with another previous generation Airport Extreme, but I found the connection wasn't much stronger with the extension, so I've just been leaving the second Airport Extreme unplugged. I've had that unplugged for months and haven't had any issues, so I don't think that's the problem.
I'm hoping this isn't a sign of something being wrong with the Aiport card in the iMac. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Loosing internet connecti when removing router from airport extreme network

Hello. I have an older airport extreme: the alien one. For years I have had the following setup:
Modem --> Belkin Router --> Airport Extreme --> wireless signal to macbook and hardwire line to mac pro. There is also an airport express downstairs acting as a relay to boost my wireless signal. At the time i did it I had other computers so i needed the router to distribute the internet signal. I no longer need the extra capacity as I now only have a wireless macbook and a wired mac pro. Unfortunately when I disconnect the Router and connect the modem directly to the airport I no longer get internet service at either computer. I can't figure it out. The Airport Extreme is already sending all the signals to the two computers...the router is just sitting in the middle doing ostensibly nothing at all. Why, when I take it out of the loop does everything stop working? Thank you!!

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Your AirPort Extreme was configured in "Bridge Mode" when it was used with the Belkin router.
Since the Extreme is now the main router, you must configure the Connection Sharing setting for "Share a public IP address".
If you are still using Tiger 10.4.x as your profile indicates, you may still have the application that came with this operating system...AirPort Admin Utility. I cannot remember back 4-5 years to tell you much about this.
If you have upgraded to Leopard or Snow Leopard, you'll use AirPort Utility.
I can help you if you have AirPort Utility. Post back if you need help.

  • How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme? My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured" and my AirPort tool on my PC will not permit me to add my new Airport Extreme network (no network names to choose from)

How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme?
I have a PC running with Win7 and just replaced my Jensen With a brand New Airport Extreme.
I have set up the Airport Extreme to the internet, Iphones and Ipads and it work as it should.
I have downloaded latest Version of Airport tool on my PC. In addition i have downloaded the airport tool for Ipad.
I have reset one of my airport Express and it now shows up both on the Ipad and on the PC airport tool.
My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured."
I have wired the airport Express to my Ethernet to be able to "see it" on my Airport tool.
My AirPort tool on the PC will not permit me to add the airport Express to my new Airport Extreme network (no network names on the drop-down list to choose from). I wished for an easy set-up, but nothing seems to be plug and play as the Commercial says.. can you please help me?

    Hi
    Thanks for Swift reply.
Yep - I in fact have two A1088 and one A1264
I actually bought the new router because the Jensen
router always lost connection to the Airport Express after some hours or days. I
always needed to restart my Jensen to play music and that was driving my wife
mad. The hope was that the Extreme should fix this. Both A1088 have been set up
to only stream music to two of my stereo amplifiers from my PC’s Itunes library.
    Are the A1088 now useless?
The A1264 has been set up to feed internet into a Denon Reciever that needed Ethernet cable.
    Please advise

  • How do I prevent other Mac users from changing my Airport Extreme Network Name and Password within the Airport Utility?

How do I prevent other Mac users from changing my Airport Extreme Network Name and Password within the Airport Utility?  My company is using an Airport Extreme in our office now and I want to prevent other employees from messing with the network/settings.  Is there a way to place a password on the settings to allow only the admin to access the network name and password?

Hi - you have will have to change the device passwords on all the base stations and then don't give them to anyone except the administrators and tell them not to save them on their computers that use the older versions of the Airport Utility - for the newer versions like the mobile apps, as soon as you enter the pasword it is saved and is visible in the advanced pane along with the network password - so if anyone gets a hold of your iPad or iPhone, they can edit the whole network - I have this same issue with my networks in the office and it is inconvenient but doable - I hope this helps

  • I have Airport Extreme (802.11ac), which disappears from Airport Utility

Why does it disappear?  I am not further than 50 feet from AE and it flips out!  AE is connected to a switch from ISP located floor below my apartment that only works if set to "Bridge Mode" on network settings tab.  I am trying to use connected 1TB drive to stream movies to AppleTV that is not 50 feet away from AE.  When AE disappears from Airport Utility, I still have connectivity to web via Wi-Fi, but I cannot stream from HD.  Very frustrating!!!!  Running MBA with all software updated.  Any thoughts?

Are you running Yosemite on your MBA? If so, this may be the culprit. There are a number of posts here describing this exact issue. At present there doesn't seem to be a solution. Even the latest OS X build 10.10.1 did not seem to resolve it. One theory going around is that this may be due to a conflict between the Bonjour protocol and the AirPort Utility. Some have tried temporarily disabling their OS X software firewall which appears to work ... BUT not consistently ... nor would I recommend it.

  • How to connect a second computer to an airport extreme network

how do I connect my macbook pro to an existing airport extreme network. The AE basestation is showing up on the macbook but when I click on it it tells me its not connected ??

How can one determine if another person has leeched
onto an Airport Extreme network? Is there a way to
    list users?
Run Airport Utility, Manual Setup, Advanced button, Logs and statistics, Wireless Clients.
...just changed my password and now my internet
connection is much, much faster...the wireless
broadcasting strength was fine, but, web pages had
recently slowed to a crawl...after changing the
password download speeds returned to normal...could
someone have been leeching on the network?
Sure, if you made a more secure password, that is quite possible. Minimum recommendation is the following:
    1. use WPA
    2. use a password with no word from ANY dictionary
    3. use a password that is a combination of letters (upper and lowercase), numbers and special characters
    4. use a password at least 12 characters long.
Better yet, use a "strong" password generator, such as the one at:
    https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

  • Where did my AEBS go???  AEBS disappears from AirPort Utility

I have set up my new AirPort Base Station using the Airport Utility but once it is setup it disappears from the utility. I am able to use the AEBS as an ethernet router for my mini HOWEVER my secondary MacBook is only able to "find" the wireless signal periodically. It is not a distance problem since the two computers and the routers are in the same small bedroom!
Any suggestions to improve performance? Reliability? I am beginning to think that I was better off with my not so fast Airport Extreme. . .

Thanks for the quick response! I will not discount the idea that I made a mistake in the setup but I have not duplicated any of the names or passwords in the setup.
I also thought that maybe there could have been that type of issue so I reset the AEBS and used the Airport Utility to set up the router again (it seems like whenever I setup a router at home it takes at least two tries before I get all the steps right. . . so it was not a big deal).
After completing Airport Utility on my mini everything looked great, then without any action on my part the AEBS DISAPPEARED from Airport Utility!!! It makes sense to me that if the utility cannot see the AEBS then the MacBook is going to have problems too. . .
Any other plans of action? My partner, the MacBook user, is voting for taking the **** thing back even though I am really liking the much faster ethernet connection. . .

  • IPhone 5 unable to join airport extreme network, help!!!

I just bought an airpot extreme a week ago. After I configured it, my macbook pro can connect the wi-fi flawlessly. However, my iphone 5 was unable to join the airport extreme network. It sees the network, just can't join it. It doesn't say unable to join, I choose my network on my iphone, it shows it is trying to join, and never successfully joined. I've been trying miliion's way to fix this problem. I reset my iphone completely, reset my airport extreme, and reset the model, still never worked. Any idea?

Was one of the million ways that you tried.....changing the name of the wireless network on the AirPort Extreme and also changing the wireless network password?
    If not.....
Keep the wireless network name simple
Use only letters and numbers.....no special characters (like an apostrophe or asterisk, etc)
Limit of 20 characters or less in the name....8-10 would be ideal.
    No blank spaces
Same rules for the wireless network password
If that does not work, I can only conclude that the operating system on the iPhone has become corrupted....and this is an iPhone problem....not an AirPort Extreme problem.
Best to post in the iPhone support area to let the experts over there have a crack at things....but in general you will need to reset the iPhone back to its original default settings, then restore it again from your backup. If that does not work, the iPhone needs to be replaced.

  • Samsung Blu-Ray player, Airport Extreme network, and streaming Netflix

I am very frustrated. Can you help? My husband just purchased a Samsung Blu-Ray BD-P3600 player and TV. I have read all of the forums on trying to connect this to an Airport Extreme network. After several days of trying different options, I still can not get the Blu-Ray player to connect to my network and be able to stream Netflix. The only way that I have gotten close is through the wireless connection devise and putting in the IP address etc. When doing a network test, if checks the MAC Address and the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, DNS Server. It then pauses for a long time and tells me that the Gateway Ping won't work. It says, "Your network cannot operate properly." I have not had any trouble connecting any computers or printers to the network. Why can I not get this to work? Please tell me what I am doing wrong. I know just enough to be dangerous. Thank you!

Hi - I found this on CNET but not a techie so not sure if this will work - I have Airport Extreme & just bought 2 Samsung Blu-Ray BD-P3600 players to use w/NetFlix and have called Samsung tech support 3 times w/no luck - the last time the technician said that Apple/Samsung WIFI not compatible - I have a 13 character pswd so that my roommate who has a PC can connect - we don't have any problems with any other connections to Airport Extreme -
Post today from CNET discussion on same topic:

found this about setting up a psp with airport should help:
"Apple does not mandate that your WEP password is the correct length. In the real world of WEP (non Apple devices) they actually require that your WEP key is a specified length dependent on the bit level of encryption. If you are using HEX or ASCII encoding these passwords can get as high as 26 to 40 characters long. Yea, thats a long pass code! Your Mac sitting in your house doesn't care about all that mumbo jumbo. You can put any old password in the AirPort Admin utility and it will take it.
I learned over at Gaming-Age that I could get away with a 13 character WEP Key. You should, however, stick with 128 bit WEP as this is better protection, and works well with the PSP (I run my AirPort Express in 802.11b/g Compatible Mode). Once you set your WEP key and update your AirPort you can setup your PSP. Now just setup your PSP for Wi-Fi Infrastructure mode"
    and this:
The trick is that to use the hexadecimal key with an Apple AirPort Card, you must enter a dollar-sign before the hex number, like
    $1E2B3C4FAA

  • Airport Express can't find internet during initial install to extend wifi from Airport Extreme

Currently have Airport Extreme but need to reinforce signal.  Bought Airport Express.  Only way to get Airport Express to find Internet is to connect directly to cable modem (even then, it did NOT show up on Airport Utility).  Thus, have not been able to configure Express either wirelessly or using Ethernet.

    Thanks for the info.
Please power off the AirPort Extreme, wait a minute, then power it back up.
Power up the AirPort Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 8-10 seconds and release, then allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
If you plan to leave the AirPort Express permanently connected to the AirPort Extreme, run the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
If you plan to have the AirPort Express connect using wireless only, then do not connect an Ethernet cable to the Express at any time
    On the iPad home screen.....
    Tap Settings
    Tap WiFi
Wait a few seconds for a setting of Set Up a New AirPort Base Station to appear
Tap on AirPort Express just below that setting
The utility will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the AirPort Express will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network
Enter a device name that you want to use for the AirPort Express.  Keep the name short and simple, like Express, for example
    Tap on Next
The utility will set the Express up for you automatically with the correct settings.
When you see the message appear of Setup Complete, tap Done
You are done, assuming that the AirPort Express is operating correctly.

  • Cannot add Airport Express to Airport Extreme network

I keep getting the message "There was an error setting up this Apple wireless device for WDS. Quit Airport Utility and try again." So I've tried a few times with different reset/reboot/configuration changes all to end up with the same message at the end. This problem seems to almost exactly coincide with my update to 10.5.8. At least the Extreme is finally playing nice after I restored it to the factory settings and updated it to v.5.7. This is really frustrating since I pipe my music downstairs through this Express and feed the TiVo.

I'm trying to do the same thing - extend my wireless network from my Airport Extreme to 2 more Airport Expresses. I don't have a solution yet but hopefully between us both and the help of others we can get it.
First thing I realized - I needed to go to settings on Airport Extreme and in the 'Wireless' tab check 'Allow this network to be extended'.
Instead of WDS, I plugged in the new Express and in the 'Wireless' tab chose 'Extend my wireless network' and then chose my Airport Extreme network. Still not there, as for some reason Airport Utility no longer picks up the extremes even though I've got them plugged in right here. Perhaps a reboot after this post and we'll see what happens.
One question to all - does it matter if any/all of these wireless base stations have encryption set to WPA or WEP? Would it affect the Extreme's ability to connect to the Express'?

  • Adding Airport Express to Existing Airport Extreme Network

I have a wireless network created by an Airport Extreme which works well but with a disppointingly small range so I bought an Airport Express with the intention of extending the original network by using the Express as a repeater (which the chap in Regent Street store told me it could do).
However when I try to join the Express to the existing Extreme network, the Airport Express does not even recognise my Airport Extreme network - do I need to connect the two via ethernet cable for this to work and, if so, what is the point of being wireless?

    Ok, thanks for clarifying.
Let's double-check your extended network configuration.
o Temporarily connect both the MacBook and the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) directly to an available LAN (opposing-arrows) port of the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) for the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the AEBSn.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the AXn, and choose Manual Setup.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network (the one created by the AEBSn) you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Setting up PC to print on Airport Extreme Network

I just purchased an iMac and Airport Extreme. I've set up my printer on the Airport Extreme Network and can print from the iMac. While I've got the PC on the network, I'm having troubles setting up the printer. When I try to "Add a Printer" I'm not sure how to find the network and correctly setup the printer. This has to be any easy thing to do... Any suggestions?

Hello Jklink. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If not already, be sure to install Bonjour for Windows to facilitate printing to an AirPort base station.

  • Extending Airport Extreme network with Airport Express using WDS

I have been having some trouble using WDS between an Airport Extreme and Express, with the Extreme acting as the internet router in the network.
Both devices have been updated with the lastest firmware.
I am using Airport Utility 5.5.1
    *Airport Extreme Configuration*
    *Wireless Tab*
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network
Allow Network to be extended: Checked
    Radio Mode: Auto
    Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Channel Selection: Manual (Same as my Express)
    *WDS Tab*
    WDS Mode: WDS Main
    Allow Wireless Clients: Checked
WDS Remotes: (MAC of my Airport Express)
    *Airport Express Configuration*
    *Wireless Tab*
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network
    Channel: (Same as my Extreme)
    Network Name: (my network name)
    Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Allow this network to be extended: unchecked
    Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible)
    *WDS Tab*
    WDS Mode: WDS Remote
    Allow Wireless Clients: checked
WDS Main: MAC of my Airport Extreme
I think that covers the pertinent stuff. If there's anything else that might be useful, please just say so.
So, the Extreme is green-lit, working fine. Wireless clients can connect to it just fine. On the Wireless Clients page the MAC of my Express is showing up, with a type of WDS listed. It does not, however, show up under the DHCP clients section.
The Express is yellow-lit. Sometimes after a setting change it goes green for a minute or so, then back to yellow, reporting a WDS Error ("the AirPort Wireless device is set up as part of a WDS network, but no other AirPort wireless devices were found").
The Airport Express is ending up with an ip address of 169.254.49.198 (an automatic private). It seems it's not getting an ip from the Extreme's DHCP.
Do I have some sort of authentication issue here? Honestly I'm totally baffled.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Would the routers' logs be of any help?
    Thanks

Wait, just did a bit more reading. Am I correct in assuming now that the "Extend a network" option will function as a wireless repeater, with no ethernet connection to the main router required
Yes. This will provide much better wireless performance...and...its much easier to configure.
On your AirPort Extreme, open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Update to save settings
On the AirPort Express, open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network (hold down the option key when you click on the selection box if you do not see this setting)
Wireless Network Name = Click on the selection box and name of your AirPort Extreme network should appear
Check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as the AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme network
    Confirm Password
    Update to save changes
A good starting location for the Express is a point that is about 1/2 to 2/3 the distance from your AirPort Extreme to the area that needs more coverage.
The ethernet port on the Express is also enabled, so you can connect an ethernet device if needed. Post back to let us know how things are working.
