PC says Ipod Nano not plugged in...then says it is...than says it isn't...

So, I downloaded the 1-10-06 software update and got the "firmware error" followed by the folder with an exclamation point icon on my Nano. Followed suggestions on the website and restarted from the CD and redownloaded the 1-10-06 update and this time it was succesful...EXCEPT that as soon as update was completed and itunes tried to re-download songs, my PC would say that no Nano is plugged in...then a few seconds later it would say it WAS plugged in...then a few seconds later it would say it WAS NOT plugged in. Now everytime I try and plug my Nano into PC, it does this. Checked USB ports and they are fine. Tried on other PC's and got same result. Sent it back to Apple and their "diagnostic" said it was OK. Can anyone help me?!

Hi j,
If it is a hardware issue and you're still inside your warranty period (three years if you purchased an Apple Protection Plan), it is covered. I'd have it checked out by the "genius" bar at an Apple Store (free).

I supposed you have downloaded and installed iTunes 7 on your PC.
It can be either a problem of your PC or the iPod, let have a prove.
Try to find any computer (of course with iTunes preinstalled), if your iPod showed up there, then it is a problem on your computer, read this
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
If your iPod does not show on any computer, then bring it back to the shop

Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

I would think, Twins1995, that if we are having the problem, others are as well. Hopefully, Apple will shortly issue a follow-up software release to fix the problem. Or is that just wishful thinking on my part.
It would be helpful, if there were some kind of work-around in the interim, so we can use our devices. Pretty frustrating when you consider that all of the hardware and software is produced by Apple.

  • Can I copy the current content of my iPod nano 7 en masse to an iPad, rather than have to replicate the content item by item?

I've had an iPod Nano 7 (16 GB) for just over a year, and I don't sync my entire music library at once--just a few gigs of favorites plus current podcast episodes and an occasional audiobook. I recently received a second-hand 3rd generation iPad (also 16GB) as a gift, and pondered adding at least a portion of the music I carry on the Nano to the iPad.  Is there a simple method in iTunes to just transfer the content from one to the other, rather than having to go over the list of songs on the Nano and transfer them from my PC to the iPad one by one?  I've already tried copy & paste and drag & drop methods from iPod to iPad directly, and neither of those appear to be options in iTunes.
Barring that, is there a wired or wireless option for the two devices to communicate directly with each other, and allow the content on the Nano to play through the iPad--essentially using the iPad's sound system as speakers for the Nano, and eliminate the need to carry headphones or a portable speaker for the Nano?  Note that I mean the two linking directly to one another, without using a wi-fi network (as I don't have a portable wi-fi hotspot) or other method of outside connection (the iPad is not cellular-capable).  Just on a lark, I turned the Bluetooth capability on for both devices, and neither device detected the other, so I see that connecting via Bluetooth doesn't seem to be an option.  (You may also note by the above that my understanding of wireless connectivity in general is limited, so feel free to correct me about any misunderstandings that the above may indicate).
Thanks for taking the time to read.

The simplest method would have been to use one or more playlists to control what you sync to the iPod nano. You could then sync that same set of playlists to the new device. You cannot sync directly from one device to the other. All content is copied from iTunes. You may be able to export one or more XML playlists from the device, import those back into iTunes, and then add the playlists to your iPad.

  • When my ipod nano is plugged into my computer it says ipod not found

My ipod nano no longer connects to computer.  It still works when playing elsewhere and Itunes is working as well.  It is exempt from firewall so that's not the problem.  Not sure if my ipad or iphone will connect.  I am afraid to test them at this point.  I tried another usb cable (Apple) so that's not the problem.  Diagnostics says ipod not found.

  • Ipod Nano Not responding when plugged in to charge

I just got my new Ipod nano 4 eddition about 8 days ago. And I was listening to it for about 20 minutes today. I turned it off and when I turned it on again about 1 hour later it was completely dead. It wouldnt turn on.
Then I tried to plug it in to charge and it wasent showing up on Itunes at all. Now this keeps popping up:
The apple sign (The one when you reset)
    Then the main menu
    "CONNECT TO POWER" then.
    HELP

I've had mine for 3 months and it started doing this. I unplugged it when the battery had run down when plugged into my car adapter. I went to plug it into my computer and the screen didn't come on when I plugged it in. My iTunes then proceeded to crash. I restarted my computer and it did the same thing. My computer does recognize the IPod as plugged in sometimes though and shows it as a removable drive but I can't access it and iTunes doesn't show it as being plugged in. I did get a message once that said it was formatted for mac or something but when I clicked ok to get iTunes to format it, iTunes never came up. Help please!

  • 6th generation Ipod nano not recognised in itunes

When I plug my ipod into my laptop, it is recognised in my computer but not in itunes or as a device when trying to safely remove it.
I tried plugging my 4th generation ipod nano into my laptop but again the same thing happens.
I tried plugging it into a different laptop and my 4th generation was recognised but my 6th wasn't. In another laptop, my 6th generation was recognised in itunes and worked fine.
I have tried resetting my ipod both ways, uninstalling itunes and reinstalling, using different USB ports and uninstalling everything apple related and reinstalling it but that hasn't solved the problem.
My laptop was sent away to have the hard drive replaced and this problem has happened since but that doesn't explain why it worked in another laptop but not in another one.
Can anyone suggest anything else I could do to try to make it work?
    My laptop runs windows 7.
    Thank you!

I've tried all of the USB 2.0 ports on my laptop and I have tried using a different cable.
I've tried resetting the ipod whilst connected to the laptop and still isn't recognised.
I am working through the iPod not recognised in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows:
    Step 1: didn't help
    Step 2: didn't help
    Step 3: didn't help
Step 4: Empty your Temp directory and restart - When I tried to delete the Temp folder, a message came up saying 'action can't be completed because the folder or file is open in another program' but I didn't have anything else open so I can't delete that folder.
Step 5: Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed - when I opened the Device Manager window, it was empty, there was nothing, so I couldn't continue with that step.
    Step 6: didn't help
Step 7: I've already tried to remove and reinstall iTunes and it hasn't helped
Step 8: Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items - I did this and restarted my laptop then tried opening iTunes but it said Bonjour had been disabled so I enabled it but setting it to Automatic and then opened iTunes but the iPod still wasn't recognised.
Step 9: I turned off security and tried but he iPod still wasn't recognised
Step 10: doesn't apply to me as I'm using Windows 7
I've tried the steps in iPod troubleshooting assistant and they haven't helped.
I've put it into disk mode and its still not recognised.
    My ipod isn't Macintosh-formatted.
My ipod doesn't sync via FireWire.
I have now worked through each and every single suggestion from Apple.
I have run a device connectivity test with the iPod attached and here are the results:

  • NEW IPOD NANO NOT WORKING, PLEASE HELP

    Hi Guys,
I have the large IPOD (4 YEARS OLD) and bought a 2nd Ipod Nano that's smaller for the gym. I plugged it into my MAC BOOK PRO and it keeps saying it needs to be updated which I press "OK" and then it asks for my password and when I type it in, it keeps stating it's "incorrect"? What should I do, any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

    Hi VS,
What "reading device" are you using?
As it started the macbook told me I was '+running on battery power+' and '+was I sure?+'. With full battery I said yes and continued.
It is best to have the power adapter connected when running a long process like this which cannot be interrupted.
The new internal drive was also making a repetitive noise - not loud or anything but certainly sounded like it was searching for something. As the whole thing was stuck and nothing was working I held down the power button.
    How long was it "stuck?"
I tried again with the first disc but it wont even do anything anymore! I took out the new drive and put in the old one. Booted up. Connected the new drive to the reader with the idea of re-formatting it via disc utility.
But now the brand new drive is not readable and is making the a few funny repetitive noises.
Please help me someone - I'm very worried about this new drive now!!! Is is broken or corrupted or something???
It sounds like there is something amiss with the new HD. If you have access to a different external enclosure, (even on a PC, just to see if the HD will function), you could try erasing/formatting it again. If not, I think it's time to contact the vendor about a return.

  • 4 year old PC turns off when new iPod Nano is plugged in

    Hi,
I have an older PC running Windows XP. I just bought a new 8G iPod Nano. When I attempted to plug it in to my computer for the first time, the computer abruptly turned off (it did not go through the shut down process) and I was unable to turn it back on for several minutes. Now the compuet is back on and appears to be functioning normally. Can anyone help me with this problem? I have not yet tried to plug in the iPod again. Thanks.

I have the same problem and wondered if it was loosey goosey headphones which were just cheap 10 dollars buds.  So are you saying I should get new ear phones that fit tighter?
That would be my guess....Here is what Apple has to say about the problem.
       http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3700
My guess is that it is a compatibility problem with older or aftermarket ear buds.  My daughter has a 6th generation Nano and does not have this problem but keep in mind she is using the ear buds that came with the 6th Generation Nano.  With the replacement program they are not sending new ear buds.  I just did a test with my daughters 6th Generation Nano using an old set of aftermarket ear buds I had in my desk and I was able to duplicate your issue.  I then used the ear buds from my Iphone 4s and did not have an issue with the Nano going to sleep and the music turning off.
