  • IPod Touch 1st Generation Shuts "Off" Continuously

My first generation iPod Touch will shut it self off after a minute or so, after no activity. It forces me to do a hard reset (pressing both buttons, the only two buttons, lol) to turn back on. When the iPod is on, it works flawlessly, no app crashes, no lag, no problems whatsoever. If I hit the sleep button and wait a minute, it will not turn back on and I'm forced to do the reset all over again. If I hold down the sleep button to actually turn it off, it will still not turn back on unless I do the hard reset again. If I were to leave the music playing and hit the sleep button, it will turn back on no problem. I have tried draining/recharging the battery, which is new by the way, and doing resets/restores with a full battery in case the battery software needs to be refreshed and it still hasn't helped.
This sounds like a software problem so I reverted back to the 3.0 version and the same thing still happens. So I restored back to 3.1.3 and it hasn't helped. As long as music is playing, it continues to work. Regardless if my wi-fi is enabled or not, this problem occurs.
Has anyone experienced this? I am going to get my new battery replaced just to rule it out, but since the iPod works when it's on or when music is playing, it's hard to imagine the battery being the culprit. I will update this after the battery has been replaced but I would still like to know if this problem has been experienced before and if there is a resolution...

I sure did. Trying to rule out a software problem led me to that conclusion as well but it didn't make one difference. I can leave the iPod sitting on the home screen and it will not turn off either until the battery has drained of course, but as soon as I put it to sleep, then it shuts off within seconds, as long as it's not playing music, as I have mentioned before...
In all respects, this really is the strangest behavior I have seen in any gadget I have owned and considering I bought this two days after it was first released, almost 3 years ago and have NEVER had any problems since, this is quite odd...Thanks for the suggestion, I wish it was that simple...

  • Time machine would back up only the first time after I shut off my imac and started it up again.  Then it would fail or claim it could not locate my external Hard Drive even though it's icon was showing in the time machine dialog window.

Time machine only ever backed up the first time it runs immediately after I start up my computer after it has been shut off.  All other back up attemps fail.  Recently it stopped recognizing the icon for my external hard drive in the time machine dialog window where you select the hard drive to back up to, and turn on and off the time machine function.  Now the external HD icon only shows up on the desk top but no longer in the dialog box. I just tried shutting the computer off and turning it on again and now the light is on, on the external hard drive but the icon does not even appear on the desk top.
The external hard drive is a 1TB Seagate. The drive still has plenty of unused capacity.  I ran a diagnostic test on it. It said the disk needed repair but the repair function would not work. The message stated that it could not be unmounted and repair is not available because the disk can't be written to. The Mac OX utility said the disk can still be opened but can't be changed nor repaired.  The external HD is not S.M.A.R.T. supported.
I haven't tried replacing the cable yet. Is that the next thing I should try?

What Mac OSX version are your running ("iOS" as shown in your profile cannot run on a Mac computer)?

  • Has anyone had their screen on a macbook pro shut off randomly?

    Hey,
Recently I have encountered a problem on my MBP (mid 2010).  So, I know that a computer can only operate in a high temperature for so long.  I understand that.
I play WOW a lot.  I know for a fact that my computer's temperature goes from a normal temperature range of around 35 Celsius to about 45 to a higher temperature range of 55 to at its highest 80 Celsius.
I use smcfancontrol and I keep my MBP on top of a cooling fan. The cooling fan I use is Antec Unbeatable Notebook Cooler 200. I like this cooling fan. The numbers above were estimated off of smcfancontrol’s interface.
Yesterday, after I stop playing WOW, my screen goes black complete randomly.  I was using my computer immediately before this screen went black, so the screen should not have shut off from inactivity to sleep.  My computer has full battery life and was on charge.  I also know that my computer’s battery is about 90% health based on istat nano widget.
I previously had a PC laptop that had its monitor shut off and never come back, so that’s why I bought my current MBP.  I was selling my PC lapto for its parts.  But I accidently found that the computer screen still worked probably because a wire wiggled the out of place.  But MBP are more integrated with the hardware than a PC laptop is.
Has anyone else have this happen to them or has something similar happened?

If a SMC reset does not help, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.

  • MSI GT70 2PE Pro Shuts off after power up and sleep mode, then works

I got this laptop less than a year ago and I am kinda getting upset about my decision buying it. It is the GT70 Dominator Pro with the GTX880M graphics card.
Only thing I did was install a SSD drive for my main drive and use the 1TB drive that it came with as a storage drive. Everything was working perfectly for about 4 months without any issues.
My problem started with the laptop shutting off in the middle of playing Watch dogs and wouldnt boot to windows, so i went to the BIOS and found out for some reason it changed my primary drive to the storage so i changed it back and all was good. After about a month it similar thing happened but this time I couldnt even get to the BIOS, after pressing the F10 or whatever it is for BIOS the computer freezes in a black screen.
I contacted MSI and sent it out for warranty, they had to change the whole motherboard as it was not serviceable (Issue was a faulty MB).
Last week the laptop started acting up again, here is my issue. When powering it on the fan and light comes on but after couple of seconds it turns off, then powering it on for 2nd time it works. This happens 80% of the time, i have to turn it on twice before it works.  Even more frustrating thing is when it is at Sleep mod, I press the power to wake it up, so it does but before getting to windows screen it shuts off.
I was wondering if anyone have similar issue like mine or know what could cause this. My tower PC that i built have a MSI board and graphic card thats why I went with their laptop but I had pretty bad experience with it so far and its not a cheap laptop either. I might have to go through another warranty work if it keeps giving me the issue.

    Try update IRST driver.

  • How do I get Mac to finish start-up...it shuts off when bar loads 1/3 of the way.

During start-up, the load bar will get about 1/3 of the way, and then the computer just shuts off. I cannot get it to reboot all of the way.
    Can anyone help with this???
    Thanks a lot!

Hi. See if you can boot in safe mode. Hold down the  shift key at startup and release a the apple logo.  If it boots this way then shut down and try normal boot. You could also do a pram reset. Hold down Command/Option/P/R keys for three chimes at startup and continue boot. If you still have problems startup holding down option or option r to go to recovery and run disk permissions repair and disk repair. If non of this helps Spudnutty may have some other options for you.

  • My macbook shuts off randomly, how do I know what's causing this and prevent it from happening again?

My macbook shuts off and I kept a journal for it because mine's got complications.
    July 1, 2014 (Tuesday)
I spilled a cup of choclate milk on my keyboard, it was soaked! But my battery was drained so I know nothing had short out. So I turned it over and never tried to turn it on.
    July 2
I went to the nearest apple center and asked them to clean it for me. (I knew it wasn't a good idea to clean it myself) They put it in a plastic bag but I asked them to open it as soon as possible so I know what parts are affected. They told me they'd take a picture of the inside for me and go back after an hour. Milk was still inside everywhere so I asked them to take it in.
    July 8
I called to get an update on my mac and they said it wasn't economically practical to repair it because they recommended a full system replacement. I got depressed and accepted my Mac's fate. But what's annoying is I put my mac in on July 2 and they only tried to clean it in July 5 which makes me think that was the reason my mac was irreparable.
    July 9
I took my mac and tried to find another opinion but I showed the diagnostics from the apple store and they said they couldn't fix it. My parents were getting ready to buy a new one.
    July 13
I realized that my mac didn't have charge when milk spilled on it so I tried to charge it and BOOM IT OPENED. They keyboards were sticky and it takes a moment before my computer reacts to the trackpad but it works! Even all the keys works! But it doesn't charge.
After lunch, it was workingp perfectly and my batteries were at 30% charge! I was really happy!
(in the interval my mac works perfectly, it stays for normal 7 hours when battery is charged fully)
    However at July 19
There was no electricity for four days (A typhoon came in the Philippines) and my battery is about 7% so I went to the public market to get it charge while I wait for electricity. I charged it for about 3 hours and sideways because it was inside my backpack while it charged so noone will notice it. When I got home and opened my laptop, it shut off randomly after my desktop appeared after start up. So I was sad.
    July 20
I found a solution online to use the option-shift-power button my mac opened and worked normally!
    July 21
My computer was normal in the morning then in the afternoon it shut off again after I waked it up from sleep. Tried option-shift for about 3-5 times before it worked with varying intervals from 5-20 minutes each
    July 22
I get nervous when I use it but it worked perfectly I was even able to edit with Final-cut pro and HD clips.
    Wednesday
Worked perfectly in the morning but in the afternoon, after waking it up from sleep it won't turn on tried the option-shift then I tried resetting the SMC for about three times (my mac is a unibody) but it didn't turn on the whole evening.
    Today Thursday morning July 24
I tried to reset SMC first thing in the morning after the thing won't turn on. After about an hour, I tried to turn my mac on normally and it opened. So what I did is to back up all my files. (It took the whole afternoon) and at night I ran diagnostics (D during start up) and no threats were found
Haven't been experiencing the trouble, as of the moment I'm writing this Jul 25, Friday (12:13 AM) HK time Philippines.
So what I'm asking here is what do I do to make sure this doesn't occur anymore. I probably written a very detailed log. So what else (diagnostics and other) should I do to prevent this from happening again. School starts in August and I will need my laptop to work perfectly to let me go through college with less burden. Thank you and I hope you reply. Any more questions about details on my Mac will be answered

Get a new computer. Consider switching to regular milk, or even a light fruit juice.

  • IMac Late 2006 shutting off

My iMac Late 2006 started randomly shutting off about a couple months ago. It would normally turn right back on and work fine. Now I cannot get it to turn on at all. I've tried many different power outlets, and I tried resetting all the power stuff with no results. On a rare occasion, it will turn on after pressing the power button over a hundred times. The Apple Store told me the iMac is vintage and they cannot fix it.
I want to know what the issue could be. Apple said it might be either the power supply or the logic board. Has anyone else experienced this? If its the power supply then I will go ahead and fix it but fixing the logic board won't be worth it.
    What should I do?

Given the vintage of your machine, the problem could be anything.
Power supply issues have a specific profile. Your machine suddenly turns off. You reboot, and it works a while, but lasts a shorter amount of time. Reboot it, and the time will decrease. In this case, the only option is to get the power supply replaced.
Logic board has a wide variety of symptoms, depending on the model of your computer. Your issue is not inconsistent with logic board problems.
As RRFS counsels, getting a new computer will be more cost-effective than repairing the old one. Be sure to back your data regularly, of course.

My iPhone 3Gs randomly shutting off at any given moment. I could be in the middle of a text, a call, or doing some games and it'll just shut off.
Now here's the unique part. When I go to turn it back on, the apple loading screen pops up but it takes somewhere from 3-5 minutes for it to boot up. Then the lock screen with the time and whatnot shows up. From this point on, my iPhone has a chance to shut itself back down and I have to repeat the process over and over again. Most of the time the lock screen flashes and then goes straight to black (shut down) but sometimes I can make it a few menus before it shuts itself down.
The only way to keep the iPhone on is to plug it into a charger of any sort. I'm fairly certain it isn't a battery charge issue because this happens at any % of power and sometimes my iPhone can use up all of its charge and not have this happen while other times I can be at 90-100% and it could randomly shut itself down. What can I do in this situation if some has some solution to this problem please let me know on [email protected] Thanks!

Not sure if this Term is Relevant towards an iPhone but, my iPhone won't Post unless if it's plugged into a Charger.

  • I'm having issues booting up my MacBook Pro. When I turn it on, I get the sound and the apple logo with the spinning wheel, then a loading bar appears, then after about 30 seconds it shuts off. Suggestions?

I believe it's OSX 10.7.5 or .4, can't check now. I'm not able to boot up past the login screen. A bar comes up below the apple logo as if it's installing an apple update, but doesn't make any progress. Eventually, the bar goes away and just the apple logo and spinning wheel are there, then it just shuts off soon after. I've tried holding shift key on power up to enter safe mode, but nothing happens.  Any help/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can't backup without booting the computer unless you remove the drive. But it may be you have a more serious hardware problem, so I think you may be better off taking it in for service.
But here's what you might try since you now have an external drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your drive's main entry (topmost one) and click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. This will fix the boot block if it's damaged. Next, select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button.
If you have no problems with the above, then quit DU and return to the Main Menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu. See if the computer will boot properly.
If you get this far you should backup the drive ASAP. You will need to prepare your external drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

Something in your backup may be corrupt. Try wiping it and setting it up as a new device, then sync your apps, data and media back to it from iTunes. DO NOT resotre from your backup. If the problem is contained in the backup, it will bring it right back again if you restore.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

In the process of shutting off, my iPhone 4 froze. The little scrolling circle just keeps displaying. I can't get it to connect ot iTunes or to my charger. So far, nothing I have done has changed anything.

Hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons until an  appears. This should take about 8 seconds, and it reboots the phone. If it doesn't something is seriously trashed in your iPhone's memory.
You can then try a forced restore. Restart your computer, launch iTunes, put the iPhone in the cradle and hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons for a long time (20 seconds). This puts the phone in Recovery mode, and it should prompt you to restore the phone.
