PC + Softphone over WLAN QoS

I could not find after hours of searching what Cisco’s best practice when using a PC and softphone in a wireless environment.
We have always had wireless phones in one WLAN (platinum) and PC in another WLAN (silver). But now we have PC + Softphone scenario which is growing
Do we now put all PC's into the voice WLAN (hundreds of users) which is setup as Platinum and mark the voice traffic from the softphone DSCP 46 (maybe 48 because of WMM and COS mapping) and everything else from PC mark as best effort?
If WMM is turned off on the PC will the AP then treat all traffic as Platinum level regardless of DSCP marking.
If I leave the users in the Silver WLAN then all traffic will get marked down to best effort.This is current setup and voice quality is suffering.
I don’t feel comfortable putting hundreds of users on a Platinum level WLAN but how else can I prioritize softphone voice traffic. What are the implications of putting pc + softphone users into the voice wlan? What does cisco recommended for this scenario?

WLC does not do anything to the QoS on the packets it forwards except the translation between 802.11e ot 802.11p.
If you have clinets that are connected to a Platinium profile but they use normal DSCP (data. No priority) the traffic will be treated normally as data with no priority.
If another WMM enabled client connected to the same WLAN and send voice traffic with platinum profile, the traffic will be mapped to the appropriate 802.1p and will pass the wire with priority.
The controller does not apply its own QoS. The QoS support on the WLC gives the WLC the ability to apply the same priority that is set on the wire (or application).Therefore, the only action a WLC or AP will do is copy the value of the original packet to the outer header of the LWAPP packet. The whole purpose of the gold, silver, and bronze QoS options on the WLC is to perform proper QoS translations between 802.11e/802.1p UP values and IP DSCP values, which depend on the application or standard that is used. Once again, QoS on the WLC ensures that packets receive the proper QoS handling from end to end. The controller does not perform its own QoS behavior. The support is there for the controller to follow suit if QoS already exists and priority needs to be applied to wireless packets.You cannot have QoS only exist on the controller.

Note WLAN client support for WMM does not mean that the client traffic automatically benefits from WMM. The applications looking for the benefits of WMM assign an appropriate priority classification to their traffic, and the operating system needs to pass that classification to the WLAN interface. In purpose-built devices, such as VoWLAN handsets, this is done as part of the design. However, if implementing on a general purpose platform such as a PC, application traffic classification and OS support must be implemented before the WMM features can be used to good effect.

    This is easily done with dial peer statements . The dial peer in your originating router must route the calls to the terminating router first. That would look like :
    dial-peer voice xxxxx voip ( the xxxxx is just a tag)
    destination-pattern 45... (that would route any 5-digit calls beginning with 45)
    session-target ipv4:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ip address of the terminating router)
    If digitones are to be dialed after the connection is established, use the statement:
    dtmf-relay-h.245-alphanumeric
    You could also use a statement to specify the codec to be used:
    codec g711ulaw
    You would need multiple voip dial peers if the calls were going to different routers based on the dialed digits. If all calls are sent to the same terminating router, use all wild cards in the dest-pattern statement.
    At the terminating router configure pots dial peers:
    dial-peer voice xxxxx pots
    dest-pattern 45...
    port x/x (whichever port the call is to be terminated on)
    prefix 45 (this re-inserts matched digits which are stripped off by the pots dp)
    Repeat for other ports which will receive calls.

  • Number of connections over WLAN bridge?

    I have a network that has been working flawlessly for many years but when I recently added a printer I ran into some problems. The printer is connected to a switch that is connected to an Airport Express that is connected over WLAN to an Airport Extreme. My problem is that I can only connect four devices to the switch. If I connect a fifth device it does not get an IP adress until I disconnect one of the other four devices. Please see the attached overview of the network. Red dotted lines represent wireless connections.
    Any ideas about what causes this behavior is appreciated. Thank you.

    on a jetpack or mi-fi 5 GB is nothing. Streaming Netflix can use 2.3 GB an HOUR. Even streaming YouTube in HD can use 1 or 2 GB per hour. I'm not sure why people think 5 GB is a lot for a regular internet connection. it's not. That why people should be using cable or DSL or fiber for internet

  • Nokia C7 - Problem with VPN Connection over WLAN

    Hello,
    today I installed Nokia VPN Client 44.01(5) for Belle.
    Before this update I used the following configuration: I set two SIP-profiles up and for each profile a own VPN-connection. One for connecting over radio and one for connecting over WLAN or hotspots.
    So over all I had three kinds of connections or connection groups to choose: "Internet" with the radio and home wlan connections, "Intranet" for the VPN-connection over radio and "Intranet over WLAN" for VPN-connections over other WLANs.
    The advantage of this configuration was that I could use the SIP-profile depending on my location and the phone had not to use the "standard" VPN-connection ("Intranet") over radio.
    Now after the update I have the problem that I can't connect to my VPN over WLAN at all. Not with the SIP profile and not manually over the internet browser. There is always the notification "Connection Problem".
    I tried also to put the "VPN over WLAN access point" from the "Intranet over WLAN"-group to the "Intranet"-group and gave it the first priority, but that doesn't helped too.
    Does someone of you had or have the same kind of problem or otherwise has any clue about that?
    Any help is very much appreciated!

    testing with the faceplate removed and into the master socket witha brand new filters result's below . I tried the quiet line test and it seems silent so no issues there. Can anyone see an issue, I've posted the noise results etc as well with the faceplate removed. (using a butter knife cause i'm just out of bed and tools are in the garage!)

    Hi, We are in the process of deploying Cisco IP Communicator 2.1.1.0 but we are having voice quality issues when use IP COmmunicator over the wireless...We want to know if the AP 1200 series can be configured for QoS or the configuration has to be done only the switch port level..Thanks in advance..Our laptops are 802.1p enabled.     depends if you're using vlans on the ap or not (if yes configure qos on the ap, if no configure them on the switch.

  • Voice over WLAN - Cisco 2504 and iPhones/Androids

    All:
    I'm working on a solution for someone who already has a Cisco WLC 2504 running 7.6.100 and 2602i APs.  They are running iPhones with a SIP application instead of purchasing Cisco 7925G phones.  They are having issues when roaming to different APs.
    Site survey is good.  I also used a laptop with Net Surveyor on it - signal looks good.  SNR is good.  They used to have coverage issues as well but I got that taken care of for them.  Only issue now is roaming.
    WLAN SSID:
    -Qos: Platinum
    -FT-PSK and PSK enabled
    802.11a/n/ac Radio:
    -Client Roaming: -67dBm for RSSI threshold and -62dBm for scanning threshold. 
    -Disabled 6mbps and 9mbps and 12 mbps is set to mandatory.  All others are supported
    802.11b/g/n Radio:
    -Client Roaming: -67dBm for RSSI threshold and -62dBm for scanning threshold. 
    -Disabled 1mbps - 12mbps.  18mbps set to mandatory.  All others are supported
    Switch to which WLC is connected:
    -switch ports used to connect to the controller are set to trust CoS and ports to APs and uplinks are set to trust DSCP. 
    With these setting changes - I believe most everything else is default.  I am confused about the following:

    Says to configure voice WLAN to use 802.11a.  Issues with that: Some Android's could not connect AND the big one - I am not able to set Qos to use 802.1p for the SIP WLAN.  It tells me to disable 802.11a and 802.11b.  If I go into each radio on 'Network' tab and disable these - NOTHING can connect to any SSID.  So unless I've misunderstood something - this is a contradiction in the best-practice link I posted above.
    another question:  If I enable FT-PSK and PSK - for devices that support FT-PSK (which i'm under the impression is 802.11r) will these devices use that and for devices that don't they'll use 'regular' PSK?  How do I know if my client is connecting using PSK or FT-PSK as both are enabled on the same WLAN.
    Again - only issue is roaming.  I second or two of 'choppy' voice then everything is back to normal working as expected.  Any ideas as to what else I can enable to get these iPhones to roam better - if this is even possible.  Can iPhones roam using a SIP app with zero voice interruption?  This is the equipment that they got and can't get anything else so I got to make the best of this.  Perhaps I've already done that?  Any ideas/suggestions are very much appreciated.

    Before any other think  I would like you to upgrade your WLC image to 7.6.130.0 & FUS to 1.9.0.0. FUS upgrade will require 30-40min downtime to your wireless.

    This simply says, you have to disable radio band before changing QoS profile values. Once you change those value you can re-enable the radio band. :)

    Read these 802.11r post & you will understand how 802.11r works. There are certain client devices does not like PSK & FT-PSK capability advertise on the same SSID & may have connectivity issues. But most of the clients like iPhone, iPads,etc  will connect without any problems.

  • SoftPhone over VPN audio issue

    Having a "one-way" audio issue when IPC connects over VPN to any Main Office IP Phones (7960). Remote IPC (softphone) shows "0 Received" Packets, but the IP Phone shows them as being sent.
    This does NOT happen if IPC contacts another IPC on a PC at Main Site, or any kind of phone at the other branch offices.
    Have looked at all of the audio settings on the VPN IPC unit, they are correct.
    Any ideas?

    Try to sniff the Ethernet traffic during call setup at the CallManager. When Callmanager sends Call Control messages to remote party, it could send wrong IP address or UDP port as an RTP parameters.
    Another components could block the traffic are firewalls. How do you have your VPN tunnel built? Do you use Cisco VPN Client? What terminates your VPN traffic at the central location? PIX, VPN3000 or Router? Traffic may go one way without a change, and some protocol FixUp may be triggered for this traffic on the way back. If you have access to firewall logs, check if you have any traffic dropped.

  • How do I add a Vista printer shared over wLan?

    I knew how to do it in Tiger. I Alt-Clicked Add printers in System Prefs, then I went to Advanced>something like Windows Printing over SAMBA and then I would add something like:
    [email protected]/Brother HL-2030
    and that would create a new queue in my Printers list.
    I can't seem to do it anymore in Leopard.
    Right now I need to print from my MacBook Pro running 10.5.6 over wi-fi to a Brother HL-2030 which is connected via USB to a Dell Vostro Desktop running Vista. It also is on the same wLan.

    Hi PAHU, I already have done that, but the problem is that I can't seem to figure out what to enter into the fields that appear. It's different to Tiger's screen. Here's what I've done, to no avail though:
    Alt-Clicked on Advanced, waited a long time until the fields become active underneath,
    Type: Windows
    Device: Another Device
    URL: smb://guest@Business-PC/Brother (where 'Business-PC' is the Win Vista Desktop which is connected to the Brother HL-2030 laser printer I want to print to)
    Name: Business-PC (what is this, really?)
    Location: Again, what is this?
    Print Using: Select a driver to use...
    and in the ensuing new field, I select the Brother HL-2030 series CUPS driver.
    But, like I said, it doesn't work.

    I've got these 5 external USB 2.0 LaCie drives, all plugged in to a USB hub into the back of my MacMini. The MacMini as well as my MacBook Pro are on the same wLan. Any way I can see the external drives from my MBP?
    Or do I actually have to unplug the hub from the MacMini and stick it to the MBP?

  • Can't find my printers over WLAN

    I have 2 servers, a ethernet LAN. All printers and macs are connectet throug cables and a switch.
    Now having a WLAN router and can connect with airport to server, internet and all.
    But I can't find (see) any printer.
    How can I print over this WLAN?

    Is your base station acting as a router or a bridge?
    As a router, it has different IP addresses on each 'side' - one for the wired and one for the wireless networks. In this setup the wired and wireless devices are separate, and the router performs Network Address Translation (NAT) for connections that go across the link.
    In Bridge mode, the base station acts as a simple bridge between the wired and wireless worlds - everyone is on the same network.
    From your description it sounds like you're in routed mode and that's why you can't print - the auto-discovery system can't see past the wireless router to see what's on the other side.
    Changing the wireless router to bridged mode will remove that block and allow you to print.

  • Can I make an iPod Touch emit sounds over WLAN?

    Hello everyone,
    I have a very embarrassing problem here... A few days ago, I somehow lost my iPod Touch in my apartment (which is neither messy nor huge, so this borders the surreal). I looked everywhere, and it seems that over night, it slipped into a parallel dimension.
    Be it as it may, I still heard it send a beep for an iCal alert yesterday from another room - but there are no more alerts coming, so I cannot hope for more audible clues.
    Now I see this iPod is still connecting to my WLAN router every day precisely at 4 p.m. - I can see its name, IP and MAC address in the router's log, so it has to be near.
    The obvious question:
    Is there a way to "ping" an iPod Touch on a Wireless Network and make it emit a beep or play a song?
    This is a regular 8GB unit with OS 3.1 and a bunch of WLAN-using apps such as Skype and "File Sharing" by Softalk - but I had none of them running when I last saw my iPod, so this probably won't help.
    I'm out of ideas, and soon, the iPod's battery will die - so if someone has a suggestion, I would really appreciate it.

    OK, my lost iPod's re-appeared - still, I'm curious if there is a way to locate/"ping" an iPod on a WLAN in the same way one would call a lost phone. Does someone know of an app that would do this?

    Does anybody know if it is possible to connect a computer/laptop/handset to a Nokia handset (N80, E61, etc.) using WLAN and share its 3G connection?

    Yes... I have done it, but it seems a bit flaky. I use it via a Bluetooth 2.0 EDR connection to my Apple PowerBook - we didn't get that far with our Windows machine (a Dell Inspiron) as the Bluetooth doesn't seem to work properly on that. Use Internet Connection Sharing on Windows XP or the Sharing Preferences on Mac OS X to set it up.
    The 3G connection is OK for email and web browsing, but Skype didn't like it much. Maybe Skype optimises itself for broadband if that's what you usually use?

    My Cisco router is working fine with Ethernet and IPv6. There is a “little” problem concerning the promotion of IPv6 addresses under WLan. When I’m using WLan the router is not providing any IPv6 addresses, only IPv4. Do you have any clue why the router is not promoting the IPv6 addresses.
    btw. I will post the config later on, when I’m at home.
