PC sometimes doesn't boot

Hi, I have a PC problem which isn't really a big deal, but I thought I'd find out if there was an easy fix.  My PC sometimes wont POST (although power led comes on)from a cold boot (probably 1 in 5 times), but then switching off and on again usually fixes the problem (if not, a second switch off/on fixes it).  I upgraded my PSU from the Aopen 300W to a Codegen 400W but the problem still surfaces (although less frequently), and it's only started doing this since I added the GF4 video card.  Presumably it's not getting enough power from cold boot, but I don't have any other cards in the PC than the GF4, and it only has standard psu & cpu & video fans.  Do I have to go higher than a 400W psu?  Could it be other devices that draw power but not power directly from my PC? (ie. zipdrive, monitor, speakers, printer, etc). Oh, and I don't O/C.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks.
My PC specs are below:
MSI K7N420 Pro Bios 2.4
AMD 1600+ XP
Triplex GF4 Ti4200
Hyundai 2x256mb PC2100
IBM 60GXP
Codegen 400 watt PSU
XP Pro

johnny5,
I have seen this problem with RAM that works when booted but when you reboot it will not post. You have to turn it off and on again. It is a simple fix, but will require new RAM.
I hate to burst your bubble,  I do not think this is a memory problem, nor a power issue... for I too have the exact same problem with my system.  Now Jhonny5 states that this has only started whence he put the geforce 4 in.  So, if it was the memory do you not think that it would occur with or without the geforce 4??
As for my system I thought it was power at first, but even with my enermax 431 watt psu (which has more than 200w of combined power).  I still get this random no boot.
I do believe that there is some bios/chipset issue here that really needs to be addressed.
So Jhonny just so you know, you are not alone on this issue.

  • My mac is slow, crashes if iPhoto is opened, doesn't boot sometimes

    Hello.
In the last time, my MacBook Pro is very slow and crashes sometimes if I open iPhoto or some other programs.
Sometimes, there comes a black display with some thin white lines and then I have to restart the computer.
Also, sometimes the mac doesn't boot right (you see only a grey display after the apple symbole).
I already repaired the system with Disk Utility and erased it to install a backup of my system.
    Thank you for your help!
    Best regards....

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

  • Compositing in KDE sometimes doesn't work on Nvidia hardware

I tried searching whether similar issue was already discussed on the forums, but didn't find anything; sorry if I missed it.
I have two different systems with Nvidia hardware, one with a 9500M GS, and another one with a GTX 580. After updating to KDE 4.11 (as far as I remember, this issue started appearing at about that time; now it still happens with KDE 4.12) compositing in KDE sometimes doesn't work. By "sometimes" I mean that once in a while I boot the computer and compositing isn't working, then I reboot and everything is fine. Sometimes hitting Alt+Shift+F12 twice helps, but sometimes it doesn't. I didn't gather statistics, but it seems to happen on the 9500M GS system more often than on the GTX580 one. On the former it happens once in about three boots, while on the latter it's something like once per ten boots, but I may be wrong.
I use proprietary driver, since I sometimes use the computer for gaming, and the opensource driver is still not quite up to the task. Btw, games work fine even when compositing doesn't work.
I haven't noticed any similar issue on my other machine with Intel graphics.
If anyone could help in identifying the cause, I would be much obliged, because I have no idea where to start searching.

Good guess but even if I miss the word or any text, in normal use it still brings up the menu (with options limited to 'zoom in' and 'zoom out'). When I'm not getting the menu for word correction I'm not getting any menu in the body of the document at all - it's strange!

  • Weblogic doesn't boot - production environment - URGENT

    I'm using weblogic 8.1 SP2
I have an Admin server and one Managed server.
I have an application deployed (servlets and stateless session beans); the
target for all the components is the managed server (only one EJB is also on
    the Admin server).
The problem is that a lot of times the managed server doesn't boot, it
    stucks and wait forever.
When this situation occurs I have to kill (Solaris kill -9) the managed
server process, delete all tha weblogic cache (.wlnotdelete, stage,
internal) and try agains. Sometimes works, sometimes no.
Below a stack trace of the managed server stucked.

    Hello,
    Thank for all tips.
The reason why my PC wasn't booting was a bad hard disk (an old ATA100 Seagate disk). Anyway my PC is configured to boot from another hard disk. I tried to boot without that hard disk but I didn't realized that it needed to be unpluged from PSU and ALSO mobo and not only from the power source.
Trying this hard disk in other PC results in no detection of the old disk from the OS.
I assume that the guilty in this case was the hdd fan. The HDD fan had two connections: One to connect it to the PSU (the same molex that use ATA HDDs) and the other molex to connect it to the HDD. I assume it's because some PSU hasn't enough connections.
I think fan is guilty because I tried this same connection using the molex that is connected to the PCIE port (connecting the molex to fan and fan to PCIE port) and my PSU detected a short circuit and power off the PC immediately. Thanks to this feature that my graphic card is good!
Very bad that TT make a bad fan like this. Connecting the fan directly to PSU works OK.

  • Vado doesn't boot up / stuck in the splash screen

My recently bought Creative Vado HD doesn't boot anymore - I press the power button and I only see the red led blink for a second. Before this it used to turn on, but wouldn't get out of the splash screen "VADO HD". (and it wouldnt turn off, only if I took out the battery)
The camera has frozen sometimes before, but then I would take the battery out and put it in again to have it working ok. Now reinsertingthe battery doesnt fix it.
If I connect the vado to the pc, it just shows the splash screen and doesnt boot or even charge the battery (I left it connected ov3ernight but It didnt charge the battery, It just killed it because it stayed all night showing the splash screen. - and thats why , i think, it only shows the red light blink instead of showing the splash screen when i try to turn the camera on.
I dont know if this issue might have triggered the problem but here it is:
minutes before vado died I connected the vado to my vizio tv and watched some videos. Then I pulled the hdmi cable and connected the camera to the pc. I noticed it wasnt detected at all -- the vado was stuck in the splash screen.
i cant install a firmware or anything else because the camera is not detected and is stuck in the splash screen.

    Hi Setmedown,
It sounds like something is wrong with the Vado HD, if you have not already I would suggest contacting our Customer Support.

  • Toshiba A350 sometimes won't boot properly

I notice there are number of problems similar to this but no one has a fix.
    Problem:
    1) *Sometimes* when I boot my laptop the power light comes on but the screen stays black. Doesn't go any further.
    2) *Sometimes* when I boot my laptop it boots to the Windows start up screen but with thin rainbow coloured lines on the screen (occasionally you can make out the background Windows start up screen). Doesn't go any further.
    3) Most of the time it boots and it works perfectly. No crashes or screen problems.
After holding the power button down for a few seconds during 1) and 2) to "shut down" after a few attempts booting it will boot properly.
So far I've flashed the BIOS to the latest version and changed Processor Power Management to 100% under power options (advice from a link on Google). Neither have helped.
Any ideas on this problem? It seems quite specific to start up as it works well otherwise. Very annoying having to try multiple times to boot.
    Specifications:
Toshiba A350 (approx. 1 year old, out of warranty)
Windows 7 Pro x64 (upgrade from Vista)
    Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13Ghz
    4GB DDR2
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (512MB discrete video memory)
    Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem
    (Problem:
*Sometimes* when I boot my laptop the power light comes on but the screen stays black. Doesn't go any further.)
My laptop only doesn't start on battery only. The power light comes on and the stays on with the laptop in a freeze (nothing displayed on screen). The only way to get this light off is to remove battery.
Starts EVERY time with the AC power connected (with or without battery).
    Works perfectly normal once booted
SOMETIMES starts with the battery only if I boot soon after I have already been using the laptop
I have tried the static release processes but doesn't work.
After having this trouble I updated to latest BIOS but has not helped
Tried a different battery and has not helped
    Is a Toshiba Satellite PRO L500 T4400 4GB 15" Win7 Laptop - only 3 weeks or so old
    Very annoying!
    Please someone with an answer??

  • PowerBook G3 doesn't boot - Help!!

    Hi Everyone,
I'm a new apple user since i got this old computer - Apple Powerbook3.
This is the background so far:
I bought the powercord since it came without it. And i connected to the laptop. Then the computer doesn't boot it makes a sound at the beginning and then stays on the gray screen. So i found that when click "z" it goes to a "Open Firmware"; and says: "to continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press return" and to shut down, type: "shut-down".
I did type "mac-boot" and it goes to the gray screen and nothing happend.
This is all what i know, Can somebody let me know what can i do next or what to do?
    Thanks!!!

    Sp1der6,
You have the last and best of the black G3 powerbooks, and is popularly known by its code name "Pismo".
When a Mac cannot find a bootable system, you will see the gray screen with an alternating folder and '?'; it will automatically shut down after a few minutes if nothing changes. Resetting the PRAM will sometimes cure this issue and also the incorrect booting into Open Firmware.
I have read where a user bought a Pismo with the same symptoms and it did not have a hard drive installed! Two simple ways to check for the presence of an HD: (1) When you press the power button, put your ear next to the 'delete' key and listen for it to spin up and the chatter of the read/write head; (2) lift off the keyboard.
    Here is a guide:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Pismo/6/
Do not disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable; just carefully tilt the keyboard face down on the palm rest. The HD is in the upper-right corner.
At this point, you need a compatible MacOS System CD or DVD. The Pismo supports MacOS 9.0.4 > 10.4.11. I recommend installing Tiger/10.4, the last version of OSX that this machine supports.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514?viewlocale=en_US
These Tiger DVDs can be quite expensive, but you can still find new DVDs at the original price of $129 or less. There is a lot for sale on eBay but most "Tiger" DVDs are machine-specific (came with new computers) and can problematic; you ideally want a retail copy.
Do you have access to another Mac that is fairly new, e.g. year 2001 or newer? there is a way to connect your Pismo to another Mac that may be helpful.

  • PowerMac G4 Quicksilver Powers On Doesn't Boot

    PowerMac G4 Quicksilver 867Mhz (2001)
    Running OS 10.5.8. 1.5Gb RAM.
Ny old machine has been running well. Recently after "shutdown" the machine would hang and I would have to powerdown by pressing the power button.
Did some reading on the topic and it suggested that resetting the PRAM might help. I tried this but have run into a problem.
When I press the powerbutton to turn on the Mac, the Power button lights and the machine turns on, *but then the Powerbutton light goes out*. *Normally it would stay on*. The machine then just sits there and doesn't boot up. Nothing happens, and after a while I power the Mac off using the powerbutton.
I did this again with the PowerMacs door open. The main boards little red light comes on, and the fans are working. However I think the Mac Mouse and the keyboard aren't responding/receiving power.(?). (The little red light under the mac Mouse doesn't come on).
I did further reading and tried pressing the "PMU" button, (just once as advised), to reset the "Power Management Unit".
    This didn't improve the situation.
As of this writing the PowerMac will power on, the powerbutton light doesn't stay on, and will not boot up. I've read as many posts as I can without finding anything relevant to resolving the issue.
I've tried booting from various disc's but as I said, I don't think the keyboard is responding.
Any suggestions for what to try next, most welcome.

    Hi, Robert -
It may boot successfully that way, although the date and time may be off.
The internal battery provides power to maintain PRAM and clock chip settings when the machine is unplugged; as long as the machine is plugged in to live power, a trickle current is used from that rather than the battery (which is the reason for a small spark appearing whn plugging a machine in).
However, not everything is turned on at the same instant - there is electronic switching circuitry that, once initiated via the on button, sequences the power on to various sections. For some reason the presence of a less-than-adequate battery can affect that sequencing negatively. Sometimes removal of a poor battery will allow normal startup.

  • Virus Control doesn't boot

Unfortunately, VC doesn't start at all sometimes. I use it with Apogee Enseble driver as a Core audio driver. If I forget to turn the TI on before loading Logic and project, then turn the TI on I see the window with question about using TI as a Core audio. Whatever I choose "Yes" or "No" and try to open VC nothing happens. VC doesn't boot and respond. The only way is to quit Logic and start it again.

Let me get this straight; by lead you mean the connector to wich the drive is plugged in? Because there is just one of that.
I've tried a different drive, but same problem. :(
But the drive works just fine, I can read and write to a disk, including the bootsector.

  • My ibook doesn't boot

    hello,
my iBook G4 1 Ghz 14" doesn't boot, it's freeze on a blank blue screen. It happened just after i plug an usb audio card (M-Audio Mobile Pre, which worked just fine until now).Sometimes when the ibook is unplugged some hours it boot again but it freeze 3~4 Minutes laters.
I can't boot from the Tiger installation DVD, i can't do the hardware test (i have lost this disc).
I have done all the things described here : http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464. I also tried to reset the nvram, the pram and the pmu. I have repaired the auth and the filesystem. I have unplugged every usb device, the ram, the airport extreme card, the battery, and tried another power adapter. The safe mode doesn't boot. I can boot in Single User mode, but can't boot using sh /etc/rc. In verbose mode, i have only this error BootCacheControl : Could not start cache : No such File or directory. the Hard disk is new.
    Please help
ps: sorry for my bad english

The indicator LED's at the bottom of the battery say it has, and the illuminated ring of the adapter is also lit green.

  • K9N Platinum - Doesn't boot with PWR2 connected

    Hi,
    I've just built a new PC with a K9N Platinum Motherboard (7250 Ver 1.0)
    I immediately discovered a problem:
-If I connect to the power supply the PWR2 Molex (the additional power connector on the motherboard, to provide additional power to the video card) the system doesn't boot. Computer's LEDs get on for half a second, then it shuts down.
-If I deconnect the PWR2 connector, computer boots fine.
Bios already flashed to 1.51... no results.
It sounds weird to me. I have an Enermax Noisetaker II 485W PSU, the CPU is an Athlon X2 65W...
Have I got a damaged mainboard?
    Thanks for support

Quote from: WillyTP on 15-February-07, 05:36:01
Just tried... nothing. Lights and fans turns on for half a second, then everything dies.
I tried to remove video card too, nothing changes :(
sound like somethink is shorted. try take board of case and retry. it maybe dumb question, but are you connect 4pin cable in a right direction?(i know its can be plugged in one way only, but if you use little more force can be done...)

I am using mkinitcpio already: /boot/grub/menu.lst:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux
    root   (hd0,2)
    kernel /vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/hda4 ro
    initrd /kernel26beyond.img
    my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
    MODULES=""
    BINARIES=""
    FILES=""
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide filesystems"
I tried removing scsi and sata, since my root is on an ide disk. But the problem persists.
also recreating an image using mkinitcpio or reinstalling the kernel26beyond package using pacman doesn't help.
Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how this problem might be resolved.
It seems like a trivial issue since the systems basically works fine otherwise. However, I can't figure it out by myself, I have tried for a week.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I suddenly was having a lot of trouble booting. My system would just freeze with a blinking cursor. I thought it had something to do with my floppy drive because if I changed the boot priority in my bios to boot from the hard disk 1st, the system would boot but would hang for a very long time in areas, and as long as 5 minutes loading uevents. I suspected this was a udev problem.
I issued a few commands to reset udev, thinking maybe recent updates didn't take effect, which did the trick...
    # udevtrigger
    # udevcontrol reload_rules
After that, everything is back to normal. I'm still learning about udev and I'm still fuzzy about a lot of the techy stuff.

  • Tecra S1 doesn't boot and hangs at (boot) splash screen

    Tecra S1 Model PT831E-107EQ-GR
Problems started a month ago. It randomly didn't booted. After some power off/on tries it finally booted and worked properly. Because it happened more often I've bought a new hard drive (Toshiba 40 GB). I've had Acronis True Image and planned to make a disk clone to the new drive. The problem is that a notebook now doesn't boot anymore so I cannot boot it from A CD nor hard drive. It stops at "In Touch..." logo with "Press [F12] for the boot device selection menu" text and doesn't react any key. I tried to boot with no CD, no hard drive - the same. I also connected internal HD using ATA-To-USB adapter - the same. Does it mean that's not a disk problem but motherboard or other components? Is it possible to enter BIOS before boot selection screen?

Problem solved. There was a broken PCB under the CPU socket. I've found that pressing with my finger and holding CPU while booting allowed to startup the system while releasing the finger caused system hanging and its total crash. Our local service tried to repair it but with no success. Finally two days ago we've found a working motherboard (a used one) for about 200 USD and now I'm waiting for installing it in the laptop. Th regular price for a new one (about 400 Euro) is too much, but 200 USD is OK. I do like the laptop because of its ports (LPT, RS232). It's used for programming and controlling some older devices. Newer laptops have no LPTs nor RS232s and it's not easy to find a working USB adapter because the software we're using is even from DOS times and has hard-coded IRQs for those ports.
Anyway, I hope it'll back from the service fresh and new, and of course working ;)
    Thank you for your tips.

    Jacek
