PC Suite 7.0 memory hungry?

Yesterday I installed PC Suite 7.0 (Windows) so I can make a backup once in a while.
When looking at my running processes I found out the total suite uses about 40MB (PCSuite.exe 25MB, PcSync2.exe 15MB) with my phone disconnected and actually doing nothing. As far as I remember this is a lot more then PC Suite 6 used to use so it seems this goes into the wrong direction.
Is this normal behavior? I'd say the same task (sit and wait) can be done by about 0.5MB.
Is there any chance Nokia developers split up the software to keep the memory abuse a bit less while sleeping? I love the slick artwork* when actually using the software but when it doesn't I'd prefer to use my precious resources for more productive tasks.
(* No I don’t, but I know you do.)
To people who don't care or don't know I'd say:
Ever noticed your PC is running slower after a few months. That's mainly because all devices come with their own software and they all want some memory.
Even when memory is less expensive these days your PC will write more to disk which makes it slower and runs faster out of battery power when using a laptop.
There's no need to use this space. It's just because all developers have fast PC's and a bucket of free memory in the corner, or because companies use those little icons as free advertisement space.

I spoke to a friend last night and this is what he said:
[Quote]The 270MB used on C: exclusively is most likely because it is used as a sandbox (an area that is stable and unaffected/doesn't affect the system). C: would be used because it is the most stable location (the system drive is not available for format through [the current] Windows installation). My guess is the allocated space is integral to the PC Suite software (most likely PIM, etc.). The %TEMP% folder would be a ridiculous place to store such synchronisations as it's prone to cleanup and/or deletion. Similarly %SYSTEMROOT% would be an unsafe bet as it's never a good idea to interfere with OS level stuff. This leaves the most likely option as %SYSTEMDRIVE%, which is readily accessible as an environment variable (Start -> Run -> cmd [enter] -> echo %SYSTEMDRIVE%)
System vars need never be called through API calls; that's usually reserved for things like registry reads/writes
API calls will be natural throughout the entire Nokia Suite. It installs drivers (DLLs) which are accessed through C-based API calls for communication with the device.[EndQuote]
Hope this clears things up ??

  • OVI Suite 2.0: memory consumption and disk activit...

    Hi all,
the new Ovi suite is consuming ridiculous amounts of memory:
    - nokiamserver.exe - 150 MB
    - Nokiaovisuite - 240 MB
    Come on!
in addition to this the nokiamserver.exe keeps the hard drive extremely busy in every boot for more than 20 minutes!
I have this latest OVI suite now installed now in my BUSINESS laptop and I just don't need or want mediaservers running in it. Just want the internet connectivity and occasional photo/message sync.
Is there a way to disable it and start it I ever happen to need it?
    JH
    Running on XP SP2

    Absolutely the same here.
It seems so avid of resources because it is in "Watchfiles" mode (absolutely consuming if you, like me, use OVI on a virtual machines whose folders (almost ever on VM) are located on a net share.
I didn't try it on a normal machine, but IMO if OVI have to handle large pictures/music folders its background watchfiles process do a hard job to monitor changes in real time.
So I launched regedit and removed (or you can leave it putting "REM" before the path) the registry key
    REM C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\MPlatform\NokiaMServer /watchfiles startup
    that you can find here:

  • Nokia 5300 - Pc Suite Cd and Memory Problem *pleas...

Hey, Well i bought the nokia 5300 (love it minus my 1 problem)
So I installed the disk that came with the box (pc suite) and it worked. Now I enter the program and transfer a song from my computer to my phone and it says I dont have enough memory in my phone.
Problem is- The only thing I have on my phone is 4 ringtones I downloaded off of the phone. and about 6 contacts. Everything else that came with the phone is still on it minus a few graphics..me thinking it will free memory. But NOTHING. Still won't work! So do i need to buy a memory card or something (if theres such thing for this phone) so that i can get music on it, or do I have to do something else, like compress the file and if so how do I do that?
...thought it would be simple to do this but im really having problems with this. Help is much appreciated

Similar problems, but on a N73.
Every time I sync my phone it's a mission to get it working either via Bluetooth or USB. USB is a little more reliable.
So usually I get it working, but yesterday nothing could get it working. I managed to get a Bluetooth connection which stayed alive long enough to delete all my calendar entries ready to write a replacement but then failed. Now I have no appointments in my phone.
On the usb cable the symptoms I get are that the phone recognises when I plug the USB cable in and briefly displays that it is enabling PC Suite mode, but that's it. No other indication (I think usually there's a little icon on the right that indicates PC Suite operation,
PC Suite on the PC doesn't recognise that there is any phone connection.
I went into the PC Suite profile in my phone and I was intereste to see that only two options a given for connection "Bluetooth" and "Internet". Is this normal? Remember I have been using USB with PC Suite fine for some time and with no other change it now doesn't work.
I eventually uninstalled and reinstalled all Nokia stuff and the Bluetooth drivers and software.
But alas no change. Phone is still not recognised.

  • Why is InDeisgn so (memory) hungry?

    Hi there.
I am working on a document that is 16 pages long, with only text- no graphics, but Task manager says that Indesign is eating up 421MBs of Memory. I have 2 other documents open, but they are both one page long, with only a bit of text. Whenever I try doing anything a little taxing it freezes for a moment
    I have Windows 7 sp1, 64-bit, processor: 2.6gb (Athlon), 6gb RAM.
What can I do, that InDesign will stop taking so much memory?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I disagree with your comments about the RAM. Extra RAM allows for more applications to be open at the same time. If you stripped out your RAM and went to 4gb of RAM you'd have the same laggy experience switching between apps or having more apps open.
Anyway - we both agree the computer isn't great and the only thing upgradable is the RAM - so other than buying a new computer that really is the only option, upgrade the RAM.
Who knows there could be DDR2 Ram installed and that processor supports DDR3.
Video card might be responsible too - but if it's integrated there's little you can do.
I'd still look for firmware upgrades for the BIOS and Processor first - this is free
2ndly I'd look at the RAM and try to boost that - this is cheap
3rdly I'd look at getting a new computer - more expensive.

  • Memory hungry linux

when my system had 512M of ram, linux (with gnome as a desktop) used about 98% of it (top tells me the used part was 500M). so i ugrade, i buy another stick of 512. now top shows a use of 1000M. what the hell is taking all that memory? and why is it that every new stick of RAM i put in is invaded? in windows XP, my memory usage is a constant 200-300M. is top buggy?

ok, i understand. so i guess this is normal :

    Swap: 265064k total, 8k used, 265056k free, 618108k cached

  • Why is FF 5.0 so memory hungry? It is barely functional, and then not for long.

On a 6 month old Acer that was functioning ''perfectly'' with the very latest 3.6.whatever version, it is now almost nonfunctional.
It is slow beyond belief. The "swirly re-freshing" symbol has moved into my house permanently.
I can barely open an IE window while FF 5.0 is running. If I can, it takes forever.
The entire screen freezes for periods of time while the "swirly thingy" insults me.
The entire screen will fade out if you get impatient & click something while the swirly thing is busy.
When the screen fades out, you're toast. You have to close FF with task manager, and you CANNOT retrieve any of your tabs when you bring it back up, because the 3 tabs that are supposed to work in the history bar, like Restore Previous Session are faded out & non-functional.
I am a professional sports writer. I have not been able to write an article in 3 days due to losing all my tabs when I upgraded, then losing them all again every day.
There is something wrong with this upgrade. My CPU cannot deal with it.
    What's wrong?
    EDIT:
There is a box titled "Troubleshooting Information" on the page I wrote this query on.
Below the box it says "Copy and paste the information from Help>Troubleshooting Information.
Guess what? That line is not a clickable link. When I pasted Help > Troubleshooting Information into the FF search it took me to a page with more options than fleas on a hound dog.
When I "paged back", I got what I expected, everything I had typed in this entire page except the question at the top was gone.
So far, everything that could possibly go wrong with this upgrade has happened. What's next?

    Hi Brett,
I got the same issue and I am very frustrated about it.
Its the same thing I experienced in Lightroom 4 and its still not fixed. I cant use the book module because of that. So BLURB is not getting my money. :-(

  • Ibook freezes, colour wheel spins, and hd clicks? Help!?

hello all you lovely mac people, i'm hoping that one of you will be able to advise me with a problem i've been getting with my g4 ibook.
i've got a standard built model, 30gb HD, 256 ram, 1.2 Ghz. it's about 18 mths old and the HD is pretty full.
in previous months i've had no problems running multiple apps, even adobe illustrator and PS at the same time. in the last week or so my ibook seems to have developed a random dislike for too many apps - the coloured wheel thing just spins and spins and the hd makes a regular clicking sound, like it's trying to fire something up.
the last two times i've had to resort to powering off cos force quit wouldn't work. i know creative suite apps are memory hungry but i've not had problems before - is there any thing that might be effecting my machine?
i've run a virus check with clamxav (can't afford virusX or similar right now!) and found nothing.
Any thoughts on what it might be?
    thanks

First of all, letting your hard disk get too full is not a good idea. In fact a general consensus says the arbitrary amount of 85% full is the maximum you should allow your hard disk to get full. The clicking can be fan, or hard drive related, and if it is the latter, your drive is nearly dead. My recommendation is if you haven't already, find a way to backup your data as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Once you are backed up, then work on cleaning up your least essential files using my tip here:

  • PC Suite doesn't show the messages in memory card

    Hei,
    Phone - 6210 Navigator
    PC Suite - 7.1
    Memory in use: Memory card
When I open the  Communication Centre from PC Suite, it doesn't show the messages. In the left pane, number of messages in the folders is shown as zero. This happens if the memory is set to memory card.
On the other hand, if I set the memory to Phone memory, the messages are shown properly. Why is this happening and what's the solution?
When I tried to take a backup, all data, except messages, is backed up.
Few days back, I could access all the messages via PC Suite. It worked fine. But, now, there's some problem.
I've lots of messages in the memory card & I wanna move them to different folders. How else can I do it?
    -Babloo

    Hello,
I think I found the cause of the problem. There's some problem with the memory card.
I set the memory for Camera also to memory card and when I take a snap, something something happens. If I set the memory to phone memory, it works fine.
But, I can access the files/folders in the memory card both from the mobile & via PC Suite.
Now, my question is "How do I retrieve the messages from the memory card?"
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • CC 2014 Progs leave me plagued with out of memory issues which the previous versions don't exhibit.

The new CC 2014 suite of progs seem rather memory hungry? I am plagued with out of memory issues trying to use them. The old CC progs work just fine! Is there a new minimum spec for memory now? For now I am forced to use the old versions as the new ones are just un useable...some 'upgrade'!
    Phil

Me too!  Seems whenever I run more than one CC app I get out of memory errors.  I have Win 7 with 32GB ram.  Only have this problem with CC 2014, not CS6.

  • Can you run Adobe Creative Suite CS on Tiger

I am thinking of upgrading to OS X Tiger or Lepord, depending when it comes out and want to know if you can run the adobe creative suite (Illustrator CS, Photoshop CS etc) without having problems?
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

How fast CS feels on an Intel Mac depends on what computer you are moving from and how much memory your Intel computer has. (Rosetta is memory hungry as are the CS applications so 1GB is necessary and 2GB is better.) Those who upgrade from a G3 or slower G4 computer will find CS runs faster than what they are used to. If they are upgrading from a fast G4 they'll notice little difference other than a longer load time. The only people who'll feel CS runs slower are those who don't have enough memory and those who used the fastest G4 or G5 computers.

  • How to install ovi suite to a drive other than C:?...

how to install ovi suite to a drive other than c:??? my c: drive is almost full with other partitions perfectly free to install it, how do i do that? can i use previous versions of ovi suite to use with my e63? at this point, i'm unable to use ovi suite at all, because there's no room to install it on my c: drive.
allllllllso there's one more thing, when i originally had tried installing ovi suite on my computer i had more than 1gb free. after installing it i on'ly had 500mb free. i had only intended for it to use a very small amount of space, and since i also use my c: drive for virtual memory i quickly uninstalled it, looking for an option i'd maybe skipped over while installing it the first time. no luck. anyways, when i looked in the add/remove programs control panel the installed size of ovi suite was only 40-50mb. even after uninstalling ovi suite the extra memory space that seemed to all of a sudden taken up by the installation stayed used.
when looking at the file sizes of everything on my hard drive, (including system files and paging file) there is still a descreprency between the amount of memory used and the size of all files total on the drive. at this point im quite disgusted and disapointed in ovi suite as i'm mostly unable to use it to connect my phone to my computer and i'm also having problems with the CA101 cable as well. i guess i'll have to go check for another cable.
nokia!!! wake up and fix yo **bleep**!!!!
anyone have any solutions for the main problem? (installing to a drive other than c? is there support for this option in any of the new beta versions? can that be included in the newest betas? i'm suuuuuure i'm not the only one begging for this option!!!

Hi ostrenga4, sorry to hear about your experiences.
When installing Nokia Ovi Suite to PC, Windows makes "system restoration points", which are available to restore operating system to previous condition, if something goes wrong, for example in driver installation.
You can change install location of Nokia Ovi Suite with following:
    - Download Nokia Ovi Suite install package from Nokia Ovi Suite pages
    - Start Windows Command prompt
    - From Command prompt, navigate to folder containing Nokia Ovi Suite install package, which you downloaded
    - Start Nokia Ovi Suite install package with command line "Nokia_Ovi_Suite_webinstaller.exe /TARGET="D:\TestDir\Test"
    - This results, that Nokia Ovi Suite installer creates folder D:\TestDir\Test (if that doesn't exist) and installs Nokia Ovi Suite there.
    - Unfortunately, Windows Installer still keeps installer cache files and system restoration points in C: drive (or whatever your system drive is)
As you can see, this is possible, but it is very much recommend to have enough space for installing software into system drive.
    Cheers, Samuli

  • Can i upgrade my macbook pro memory?

i would like to increase my macbook pro speed, i have 4 gb RAM, 500 Gb HD, 2.3 ghz, what should i upgrade?
HD to a SSD or RAM to 8 Gb???
whats the most important thing to increase speed? is it the processor the most important or its not at all?

It all depends on which MacBook Pro model you have - I have a late 2011 and have upgraded to 16GB of RAM and a SSD, shortly after I received my 'new' MBP in April. You'll notice great speed differences in memory-hungry apps if you upgrade your RAM but you'll really be amazed at the shear speed of an SSD.
You should consider what's really slowing you down before making any upgrade - I can't imagine running on 4 GB of RAM these days, but then I can't imagine running without my SSD either. If I were you, I would first make the least expensive upgrade - RAM - taking your MBP to it's maximum, and then look at SSD options.
Please let us know your model - by year is most helpful.

  • My first 9.02 "Out of Memory!"   ????

So, I finally installed Logic 9.02 on my mac pro with 12 gigs of ram.
Started a simple project yesterday, with NO VI's, and a few plugins. I was testing drum mic setups, so I recorded an 8 track drum take. Then I wanted to see how the new 'drum replacement' feature works.
At first the "drum replace" option was greyed out. Figured out that you had to flatten takes to get it as an option... So did that, selected my snare track and hit "replace".
"OUT OF MEMORY. No further editing or data allowed" or some nonsense like that.
?????? With 12 gigs of ram, and only 8 tracks of audio, no instruments at all?
This is an "upgrade" to Logic 8? This is the first time in all my years as a Logic user that I've ever had any kind of memory related problem. Pathetic, and utterly inexcusable in my professional opinion.
    What a disappointment.

    samplaire wrote:
    I'm sorry for my words...
    No problem, but thanks.
Back to the topic: can you try to reproduce the situation? Try to do it and when it comes to the warning message, launch Activity Monitor and observe the memory consumption having in mind all the tips other users wrote. Additionaly I've read somewhere that if you have many apple loops in a project or other time processed files (perhaps the thing you do can be those?) they are memory hungry.
I can reproduce this situation easily, simply by opening a new project from my standard autoload, recording a multi-track drum take for a minute or so (8 to 10 tracks), and then choosing one of those tracks and selecting "drum replace". Boom - out of memory.
It MAY be true that this somehow pushes Logic close to its 4 GB limit. Maybe.
But here's the thing. If I were still in L8, I could go ahead and add DOZENS of more audio tracks, dozens more plugins, and another 10 or so virtual instruments before there'd be any significant sign of Logic breaking a sweat.
Here, the song has barely started - just 30 bars of drums and nothing else -- and already L9 is begging for mercy? This is a very, very bad sign in my books.
I will check activity monitor next time though. Maybe my template is too complex (lots of aux busses, and plugins ready to go on drum and instrument tracks, mostly Waves SSL).
But nothing can change the fact that L8 would have cruised along happily in the exact same situation. So the only solution for me would be to avoid using L9's new flex/replacement features. So, if I don't use Flex, and I don't use the guitar amps (already got plenty), and RAM usage is way worse, then what the heck is the point of this "upgrade" in the first place?
Issues like this just make me more displeased with Apple's lack of tech support for this "pro" software... I really think I'm just going to go back to L8 and if and when L10 ever makes an appearance I'll give it a shot and see if anything's improved this time.
    (curmudgeon mode: ON)
    Harumph!

  • My mac is eating up memory.

Hi, I recently filled my scratch disks, thinking it was due to all the photos I have on my MAC, i began moving them all to a backup external hard drive and then removing them from my MAC. I managed to move about 60GB of photos off my machine and contined using my MAC as usual. The next day after adding nothing or even using my mac my memory has somehow filled itself back up and i now have only 1GB left on my hard drive with nothing to show from it. I thought it may be a virus and have ran Sophos anti virus software but found none.
any thoughts of what i can do to stop my mac from being so memory hungry?

  • Query memory consumption

    Hi,
Need some expert in SQL here. May i know how much memory (RAM) consumption for a simple query like 'SELECT SUM(Balance) FROM OCRD' cost.
    What about query like
select (select sum(doctotal) from ordr) + (select sum(doctotal) from odln) + (select sum(doctotal) from oinv)
How much memory would it normally takes? The reason is that i have a query that is quite similar to this and it would be run quite often. So i wonder if it is feasible to use this type of queries withought making the server to a crawl.
Please note that the real query would include JOINS and such. Thanks
    Any information is appreciated

    Hi Melvin,
Not sure I'd call myself an expert but I'll have a go at an answer
I think you are going to need to set up a test environment and then stress test your solution to see what happens. There are so many different variables that affect the memory consumption that no-one is likely to be able to say just what the impact will be on your server. SQL Server, by default will allocate 1024Kb to each query but, of course, quite a number of factors will affect whether SQL needs more memory than this to execute a particular query (e.g. the number of joins, the locks created, whether the data is grouped or sorted, the size of the data etc etc). Also, SQL will release memory as soon as it can (based on its own algorithms) so a query that is run periodically has much less impact on the server than a query that will be run concurrently by multiple users. For these reasons, the impact can only really be assessed if you test it in a real-world scenario.
If you've ever seen SQL Server memory usage when XL Reporter is running a very large report then you'll know that this is a very memory hungry operation. XL Reporter bombards SQL with a huge number of separate little queries and SQL Server starts grabbing significant amounts of memory to fulfill these queries. As the queries are coming so fast, SQL hasn't yet got around to releasing the memory used by previous queries so SQL instead grabs available memory from the server.
You'll get better performance and scaleability by using stored procedures but SDK certification does not allow the use of SPs in the SBO databases.
    Hope this helps,
    Owen
