Pc suite backup files

Im basically trying to view my contact list without the phone attached to the pc. I have backed up the data on the phone including the contact list to one of your lovely .nbu files.
How exactly do i do anything useful with these files? There doesnt seem to be any tools in the pc suite that allows me to view the contents let alone edit it in any way.
what im really trying to do is migrate my contact numbers to a new phone (shock horror its not a nokia) but it seems like an impossible task.
Random stuff you like included
operating system : windows xp sp2
nokia pc suite software : 6.81.13.0
connectivity : datacable
phone : 6210 one not so carefull owner

I had a small problem with the 6230i phone and I thought that I'll just get it fixed. (The phonebook freezed time to time.)
So, I made full backup from the phone memory with latest pc-suite (6.81) before giving it to the service.
The trouble began yesterday when I got the phone back from service. I found that I can't restore full backup because they had updated the phones software to version 03.88. Now I can't restore contacts at all. Everything else.. pictures and all that rubbish can be restored, but not contacts. I was stupid enough not to synchronize contacts with the Outlook before. The problem seems to be that things can't be recovered because the phone is different according to the pc-suite software.
Nokia has a policy that they don't dowgrade phones software version. So, now I must find a way to restore contacts from this nice .nbu file. Any bright ideas? I know that it's possible to fix those old backup files so that pc-suite don't mind if the phone version is different.

  • PC Suite Backup failed to backup contacts

Went to update my firmware today, and it said that it would delete all contents on my phone. So, I updated PC Suite, and then clicked the backup button. It appeared to be successful.
I then had it install the firmware update. After that successfully happened, I went to backup, and clicked Restore. It updated my saved profiles, applications, files, and images.
My contacts, however, are now all gone.
The log shows it backed up Contacts, but there is nothing in that heading. If you compare it to how the log formats files, there were items under it as a heading, like so:
    Content restored:
    - User files
    Images\Backgrounds\underdark1_176x208.otb
    Others\ClientLoginTest.swf
    Others\FlickrMobile.swf
    Others\show_keycodes.swf
    Others\testing_login.swf
    etc...
    - Contacts
    - Calendar
    - Settings
    - Messages
    - Bookmarks
    - Full backup
So, following that logic I'm lead to believe that my Contacts didn't actually back up. Um... darn?
I have some contacts backed up on my SIM card, but they are 2 years old, and don't have the 2 years worth of contacts I've added since then.
Just thought Nokia might want to know their Backup program doesn't work with Contacts on a Nokia 6680.
BTW, just so today wasn't a total failure, what DID my firmware update actually give me? An "up to date Symbian OS" doesn't count; that has no tangible user value.
Finally, here is my system info, hope it helps the engineers to prevent this problem for other users in the future:
    Operating system:
    Microsoft Windows XP
    Build 2600
    Service Pack 2
    Language: English
    Language for non-Unicode programs: English
    Locale: English
    Input language: English
    Nokia PC Suite:
    Version 6.82.21.0
    Language: English
    Connectivity Cable Drivers:
Not installed [this is bs, they are installed]
    PC Connectivity Solution:
    Version 6.43.8.0
    Microsoft Outlook:
    Version 11.0
    Build 5510
    Bluetooth stack:
    Microsoft Bluetooth stack
    Version 5.1.2600
    Build 2180

I had the same problem today when trying to restore a full phone memory backup of my Nokia 6680.
All data was restored except contacts data.
The phone went through a repair and the motherboard was changed (=> new IMEI) in a authorized Nokia Service Center.
So the Contacts in Phone Browser were empty.
    BUT I FOUND A SOLUTION!
It only works if you have backed up only your contacts (so you have a .nfc file in "C:\Documents and Settings\*YOUR-USER-NAME*\Application Data\Nokia\ContentCopier\".
(Before taking the phone to the repair shop, I made the backup twice - one full backup, and one backup selecting only contacts)
So, if you have the .nfc file, copy it to a separate folder. (If i leaved the .nfc in the same folder with the .nfb, pc-suite-content-copier only sees the .nfb file(s) and the Contacts/images checkboxes are grayed).
After copying the file, in ContentCopier select Browse and select the folder with the .nfc file in it.
Now the checkboxes are not grayed anymore (what a stupidity!), contentcopier says it found a backup file, and you can restore it succesfully.
For precaution, now i will manually copy the c:\system\data\contacts.cdb file, instead of using the **bleep**py content-copier.

  • Can i view the contents of a backup file made in N...

Is it possible to view the contents of a backup file created using the Nokia PC Suite?

backup file is meant to be restored to phone when in need, so it is not designed to be viewed in PC. (this is obviously because it contains contacts, calendar items, settings, pictures etc., so there is no simple way to view such diverse data in PC just by double clicking one file open.
You can open the backup file with notepad, but you will se that it is cribble, if you look really carefully and are desperate to find say contacts in the middle of everything, you can scroll and look for that certain data.
If you like to view the contents, you should use Image Store to move pictures, File Manager can do that too(sync gallery to PC) and file manager also syncronises SMS's and contacts to PC in readable format.
You did not describe what you actually are after, so here are just my thoughs.Message Edited by manta on 23-May-2006

  • Help with Nokia Communicator 9500 Backup Files - N...

    Greets,
I have come to a realzation that a vital piece of information may be within some old Nokia Communicator Backup Files.  I of course don't have the phone, I also had several Communicator Phones, and I believe I may have more
backup files from those, which may also contain the info.
I of course, haven't had the phones for years...
Am I able to use any Nokia or 3rd Party Software to work with the Communicator Backup Files and extract data?
Thank you for any and all Asisstance, I can't state enough how important and helpful this would be!

Are these backups upon MMC or within PC Suite upon PC? If the latter you could try NbuExplorer: http://sourceforge.net/projects/nbuexplorer/

  • PC Suite backup not working

    Hi,
yesterday I performed a backup of everything. Messages, calendar, contacts etc.
Today I succesfully performed a update via Nokia software updater.
Now I am struggeling with putting my backup back on the phone. (Can't remember what it is called) Runníng Danish version. :-D
Everything is back on my phone except the phone settings.
It gets to 8% and then my phone gets disconnected.
Running PC Suite 7.0.8.2 - Windows XP SP3.
My Phone is a Nokia E51

you can try to use Noki to verify that the backed .nbu file is correct.
The backup file is a .nbu file which usually is in folder: C:\document and settings\[user name]\Appliction Data\Nokia\Content Copier\.
'Application Data' folder is hidden by default. You might need to change it visible.

  • Anyway to restore backup files from s40 to s*3 dev...

I made a backup of nessages in my nokia 2730 device. I have the backup file its in .crt format.
Now i have nokia c7 and i want to restore that backup file in c7. but it dont support ?
any idea, how to get messages in c7 ?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the forum!
How did you back up your messages? Did you use the Nokia PC Suite or the Nokia Suite to back up your messages? Note that you can use both the Nokia PC Suite and the Nokia Suite to back up your files but there's no guarantee if your C7 will recognize it. Since both devices are different in terms of software.
If you still have the 2730 Classic, another way to transfer your messages is by syncing or exporting/importing it using the Nokia Suite.
You can download the latest Nokia Suite from this link: www.nokia.com/nokiasuite
Transfer all your text messages to the Nokia Suite:
Connect your Nokia 2730 Classic to the computer.
In Nokia Suite, go to the Messaging tab.
To get messages from the phone, press Sync messages and follow the instructions on the screen.
Once your messages imported to Nokia Suite, you can view them under Conversations.
Alternatively, choose a file to export the messages, select File > Export all text messages.
Browse to the folder where you want to save the file. Then, type a name for a new message file in the File name field, or select an existing message file to overwrite it.
Click Save. All your text messages are stored to the file.
    Disconnect the phone.
Open the message file and sync the content to your Nokia C7:
Connect your C7 to the computer.
In Nokia Suite, go to the Messaging tab.
You can view your messages under Conversations.
Alternatively, choose a file to import the messages, select File > Import text messages.
Browse to the folder where you have the CSV file that contains your messages and select it.
Click Open. All your text messages are copied from the file to Nokia Suite.
To sync the content to your C7, press Sync messages and follow the instructions on the screen.
The text messages appearing on your C7.
    Hope this helps.

  • Nokia n73 backup file

    sorry for my bad english.
i have been made a backup file long time ago cuz i couldn't copy the pictuers that i'v been captured.
so i took a backup file and now when i wanna backup it again it seems that the PC suit doesn't regocnize the file
but i'm sure that it is the correct file.
so what i'm gonna do? i had a very important files in the backup and i'm very worried about it.
    thanks alot,
    Alon gani
    P.S
i can upload the file if you want to see what is going out with it.

I understood now. However, if you made a backup before you have formatted your computer without any backup for your PC, all files are wiped off and nothing left on the harddisk. Normally, it's not easy to get them back by any means. Professional data recovery services in your area may be able to help you out.
Or if you still have that particular backup file in hand, try to put it back on the default location. It would be C:\Documents and Settings\{your user name}\Application Data\Nokia\ContentCopier (on Windows Xp). The backup file has .nbu extension.
PS. If it's Vista, ask again I will have a look for you later.Message Edited by delixis on 12-Nov-200704:05 AM

  • ***** .nfc Content Copier backup file format incom...

The PC Suite 6.70.22 Content Copier’s Restore function (running on Windows XP SP2) cannot restore the Contacts to a 6680 mobile from a .nfc file on a USB flash memory stick created earlier on another computer by PC Suite 5.8 Content Copier’s “transfer data from the phone to the PC” function (running on Windows 98SE) which copied the contacts from a 7250i mobile.
Wishing to copy my contacts from my old 7250i mobile to my new 6680 without the expense of purchasing a DKU-5 USB cable for the 7250i (the 6680 has a DKU-2 USB cable in the box), I first copied the 7250i’s contacts using the infra red link to an old laptop running Windows 98SE by executing PC Suite 5.8 Content Copier’s “transfer data from the phone to the PC” function which created a file named “C:\Windows\Profiles\my name\My Documents\Backup files\Nokia 7250i contacts 15-12-2005.nfc”.
I then copied this file to a USB flash memory stick and subsequently plugged the flash memory stick into a USB port on a desktop machine running Windows XP SP2. I also connected the 6680 to another USB port using the DKU-2 cable. After starting PC Suite 6.70.22, I clicked on the Get Connected! Button to get connected to my 6680. I then clicked on the Backup icon to load the Content Copier Program and clicked on the Restore button. On the next screen headed “Select back up file to be retored” I browsed to the folder on the flash memory stick containing the file “Nokia 7250i contacts 15-12-2005.nfc”, clicked on the checkbox labelled “Restore contacts, calendar etc” and clicked on the OK button.
The following warning message was displayed :-
You are about to restore contents from another phone model than the connected phone.
Some content might not be restored.
and I clicked on the OK button.
Then the following warning message was displayed :-
This backup file has been made from a phone that uses a different language than the target
    phone.
To make sure that your phone and Nokia PC Suite applications function properly, it is
recommended that you restore the backup files only in phones that use the same language as
    the source phone.
and I clicked on the Cancel button which caused the initial Content Copier screen to be displayed.
I think it is totally unacceptable that PC Suite 6.70.22 Content Copier cannot correctly process the files created by PC Suite 5.8 Content Copier.
Please reply if you agree with me.
Has anybody successfully transferred contacts between mobiles using the same or similar procedure as I have described above ?
If so, what did you do that was different ?
Does anybody know whether Content Copier’s .nfb backup file format is compatible between PC Suite 5.8 Content Copier and PC Suite 6.70.22 Content Copier ?
Before I report this problem to Nokia, has anybody reported this problem to Nokia previously ?

Yes, I am aware I can connect my 7250i to pc suite 6.7 to transfer all the data from the old phone to the new one.
But I think you missed the point.
I was attempting to use the resources I had without any further expenditure on hardware.
The 7250i has an infra red and USB connection but I do not posses a DKU-5 USB cable for it.
I was quoted around £29 for a new DKU-5 cable, although I have recently discovered that they sell for much cheaper on eBay.
The only computer I have with an infra red link is an old Sony laptop running Windows 98SE. Sony are probably the worst computer manufacturer for not providing the latest versions of Windows with the required Sony device drivers and the Sony utility programs for their old machines. Hence if I install Windows XP SP2 on the laptop from a retail CD, I lose some Sony functions/capabilities. So I am stuck with Windows 98SE, which means I have to use pc suite 5.8 as pc suite 6.7 cannot be installed on this laptop becuse it only runs under Windows XP SP2 ns Windows 2000.
As the 6680 mobile requires pc suite 6.7, I did this on a desktop machine running Windows XP SP2, but this machine does not have an infra red port. Hence my attempt to tranfer the .nfc file from the laptop to the desktop machine on the assumption that Nokia software developers would NOT be stupid enough to not provide backward compatibility.
I have been a computer programmer since 1966 and know that you must always provide backward compatibity even if this means providing another program to convert a file in an old format to a file in a new format.
I intend to lobby Nokia to do something about this and was hoping for support from others who have attempted something similar.

I've been updating my N95 from V11 to V12.0.013 right after I did a backup file. Backup went ok and no error reported.
After fw update, I tried restoring data but Content Copier informs that "no earlier backup file exists for this phone".

  • NBF file corrupted? "no backup file available" whe...

    hi there,
i have problem in restoring data i backed up before upgrading the firmware from 4.62 to latest 7.23 and managing a full restore of my quite old supernova 7210, as i wasn't able to let nokia pc suite recognizing the phone (error every time i plug the phone).
i created an internal nokia backup file (NBF) with messages, calendar, settings and contacts.
i updated the firmware and now i'm trying to restore everything i need.
now the issue: i'm able to restore "contacts", "settings" and "calendar", but when i check also "messages" option, after 2% of completion the phone told me that there's "no backup file available".
    what can i do now?
i know those NBF files are zip files; is not possible to create a new backup file and merge the old messages folder "predefmessages", stored in the original NBF-zip file, into the new one?
    please help me!

  • PC Suite Backup problem!!!!

i used content copier to bankup my e51 phone memory content, connected pc with data cable,90 minutes later,it was still processing, why?

I have tried by using the content copier in PC suite, but it just doesn't seem to recognize the backup file made from N70 and I cannot find any settings that I could change. PC suite evidently presumes that the back up is made from same phone model as the one used to retrieve it.
It is also possible that I am not smart enough to figure out the right way to do it.
I feel stupid because I didn't syncronize the calendar and other information at the same time when I made the backup, that would have made it so much easier.

  • PC Suite Backup Folder

How do I specify the folder I want to backup my phone to?
    Jerry

Assuming you're using PC Suite 6.84, the online help in the PC Suite backup/restore program (Nokia Content Copier) says under the heading "Defining where to back up" the following:
To define where to back up
    1. Define a name and a storage location for the backup file. Here you have two options:
    - You can use the default file name (consisting of the backup date and phone model) and location.
    - You can click Browse to save the backup file with another name or to another location.
    2. Click Next.
