PC to iMac File Copy Question

Last night I copied a directory of photo images over from my Windows 7 laptop to the iMac. It's a very large directory -- approaching 21 GB. In doing a quick compare I noticed the folder sizes and number of files were different. Does anyone know if there is any logical explanation as to why they would be different. The file copy was done over my home wireless network and due to the size of the directory I let it run overnight. There were no errors when I checked in the morning. Is there any way to confirm that everything got copied other than check the file count on a per directory basis.
Thanks.

did you enable windows file sharing under system preferences/sharing?

  • Scheduled automatic file copying question

    Hi,
I'm not sure that this is the right place to post this question. If not, please move the question to the proper place or let me know where I should post it.
I'm using OSX Planet (http://www.gabrielotte.com/osxplanet/main.html) which is a nice program that makes my background screen a picture of the Earth that shows the current cloud cover and light and shadow areas. The image is updated as often as you 'd like showing "live" results.
I'd like to copy the image file that the OS Planet generates to use as the background. Since the imaged changes every few minutes (the settings I use) I'd like to copy the newest image file whenever it's created. After a few days I'll have several images which I'll compile into a nice time lapse movie.
I could sit at my Mac for 48 hours and click and duplicate the image file every time a new image file is created, but I don't really want to do that. How can I set something up to duplicate the image file automatically every five minutes or so?
    Thanks.
    Jim

Unfortunately, there are probably no ways you could do this in a way that would not interrupt your minute-by-minute work without some Automator actions available from the programmer.
I emailed him for you. Maybe he'll get in touch with you.
The easiest (but most interrupting) way would be to have Automator bring the OSXplanet app to the foreground, take a screen capture of it, and dump that into some folder you designate for your desktop pictures, perhaps. You will have to automate naming these in a series as well, so they don't get overwritten.
That's at least one concept for you to go from.
    Let us know your progress.

  • File Copy Question

We are currently developing a Forte eMail service that will send messages
together with attachments. File paths cannot be used to reference the attachment
files as the server the eMail server resides on, cannot see all network files.
Hence files need to be passed to the eMail service via objects. The File.
ReadText (target=TextData, length=integer) method, does not read Microsoft Word
.doc file correctly (encounters EOF before reading all of the file), The File
.ReadBinary (target=BinaryData, length=integer) method does read files
correctly, but how do we re-create a .doc file from a BinaryData object ?
In summary, we need to copy any file types from the client to the eMail service
without using file paths. The FileSystem object has been rejected as this would
not enable applications outside of Forte to use this service. All help and ideas
regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.

  • Does the last updated backup in Time Machine have all my files for "standard" file copy? (i want to copy and paste files to another computer that doesn't have TM)

My personal Macbook pro died, but I did have a Time Machine backup. I have a new iMac that I would like to use as a family computer. I would like to transfer some files to the new computer (and set-up a new Time Machine backup), but archive the remainder on a non-TM drive. I was planning to:
    1. File copy my last backup folder from my old TM drive to the new computer
    2. Copy (and then delete) the files I want to archive on another HD drive
    3. Wipe clean my current TM drive
    4. Set-up TM on my new computer
Is this a good way to proceed?
Is copying the last backup folder (vs. all backup folders) enough to move my files over?
    Any better approaches appreciated!

I suggest you visit MicroCenter and go to there Apple section and ask one of there guys if they are still offering the 2 terabyte Backup For the iMac, Mine was only $100.00.
So the iMac has Time machine plus the USB 2 Terabyte Backup for less than your $130.00

  • File copying problems

Copying some files using the Finder results in a dialogue box error message: "The Finder cannot complete the opeeration because some data in +(file name)+ could not be read or written. (Error code -36). The same files copy without error when using SilverKeeper (v.2.0.2) backup program.
I am also experiencing a problem when quitting SIlverKeeper. A second or so after selecting Quit, and after the program has actually quit, a system dialogue box appears saying that the program has unexpectedly quit and offering choices of Reopen, Report to Apple or Close.
The system also seems somewhat sluggish.
    Can anyone offer suggestions?

Hi John, At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Is it possible to have media files copied to a new location as you import them into a project?

I have roughly 800gb of footage i've taken over the past 2 years of traveling, and I am making a single video montage... The files are located on an external drive, making them slower to work with. I have a 1tb ssd but not enough free space to copy all the files to it for sorting. What i want to do is have the files copy over to the SSD as i add them to the project, so that only the footage i'm going to use gets copied over to the SSD. The only way i can determine if i am going to use the footage or not is to scrub through and mark Ins and Outs in premiere...
So i guess my question, in the simplest terms i can ask is, Is there a setting in Premiere, like the project manager tool which allows you to consolidate used media files to one destination, but one that will consolidate files as you add them to the project? or could i do this manually by repeatedly using the project manager tool to consolidate files periodically?
    Hope that makes sense...
Oh, and yes, i have considered other methods to my madness, like reviewing the footage outside of premiere before deciding if i will use it or not, frankly, i have over 4000 pieces of footage and it's just much faster to scrub through them in premiere than to open each one in vlc to review. It's also much more convenient to mark my ins and outs as i review the footage, so premiere is my only option.
    Thanks!

You can easily (and better, IMHO) do what you want in Adobe Prelude.  It's part of the CC subscription, and may have been included with CS6.
Open the Ingest panel, navigate to the external drive where you have your source clips, make the thumbnails in the Ingest panel comfortably large, click a video clip to enable scrubbing, and use the J-K-L keys to navigate playback through the clips.  Put a check mark on the clips you want and be sure to select and set up the Transfer option on the right side of the panel before ingesting.  Don't select the Transcode option.
    Cheers,

  • Problem with UTL FILE COPY

    Hi,
I am facing one small problem in UTL FILE COPY package. We have an automated scheduled batch process. As a daily batch process it moves the files from one folder to other. During movement, it first copies the file from source folder to destination folder using FILE COPY package and then removes the file using FILE REMOVE package from the source folder.
Few cases are found that the file when files are copied they are copied as 0 bytes in destination folder but the source file had 1 MB file size. The interesting part is I am unable to replicate the issue. Means when i try to run once again the package its working properly and files are copied with correct size. This kind is issue is occuring very rarely though as once in month but the question is why FILE_COPY package is not working properly sometimes.. I am unable to understand.
Thanks a lot for going through this. Any suggestions.
    Regards,
    Ashish

Anyhow make sure that the copy will start after the full generation of files.
You can think like a spool file generation with huge data. In that case initially spool file available with 0 byte only. After finish of query only it shows its actual size.

  • 10.6.3  -   still error 36 file copy errors

After getting a new mac with 10.6 I started having problems copying files, namely that copying aborts with error 36 quite frequently. I never had such problems on my old powermac with 10.3.9. After some reading here, I discovered this was a known 10.6 problem when copying to windows formatted disks.
Recently I let my mac upgrade itself to 10.6.3. One of the listed fixes was for file copies to windows servers. Unfortunately, I'm still getting error 36's. I have 2 ways that I transfer files which yield lots of error 36's :
First is with USB thumb drives formatted FAT32, for backup and taking files back and forth from home/office & pc/mac. I haven't yet experienced a problem with this in 10.6.3, but really I also haven't transferred many files this way yet, so can't say for sure whether the issue is fixed here or not.
Second way is uploading completed projects (mostly pdf's) to our corporate site via internet, doing a "connect to server" with afp://mycompanysite.com. I have no idea what server/software they are running with that, but I still get consistent error 36's when uploading files to it. If I make that afp connection with my ancient 10.3.9 powermac, I can transfer files all day without any errors, so...
obviously Apple still hasn't quite fixed the file transfer problem!!
    Help, Apple, Help!!!!!

Thank you for your reply, Charles.
    1. I thought that this thread was about Finder in 10.6.3 generating Error -36 errors when trying to copy files to an external drive, which is what I wrote about.
Yeah, but it appears that the OP had a different problem.
    2. i know that I shouldn't have to force-eject DVD-RAMs; I mentioned that precisely because it is unusual. I was hoping that by raising all the problems that I noticed, maybe someone would recognize something that would lead to a solution.
If you have to force-eject discs, odds are that you have a problem directly related to that device.
    3. Hardware problem is unlikely. The drive works fine in all respects with my older (17") iMac running OSX 10.4.11; the drive works fine with the new iMac running OSX 10.6.3, when copying any size file to or from a DVD-R or DVD-RW disk; the drive also works fine with the new iMac when copying small files (less than 1.4MB or so) to a DVD-RAM; the drive also works fine when copying any size file FROM a DVD-RAM. The error occurs ONLY when copying a file larger than about 1.4MB to a DVD-RAM. To me, the key point is that it works perfectly with 10.4.11, but not with 10.6.3. The only other difference is that with the old iMac I used the Firewire 400 port, and the new one is 800 (so I use a converter cable); but i don't think that would explain why there is no problem with DVD-R and DVD-RW, nor with small files, nor with copying from the drive to the iMac.
It would appear that there's a software problem somewhere which relates directly to that device. You need to check the drivers.
    4. The mechanism is TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH - 5203N, firmware version LA00 (which is the latest). I have already contacted LaCie about this as well. They don't know why it doesn't work, either. But, on the other hand, they admitted that they do not know of anyone who does have 10.6.3 and IS able to copy larger files to a DVD-RAM. Do you?
Nope. Most people around here use DVD-Rs or DVD-RWs, not DVD-RAMs. I've not heard of that particular model DVD-RAM.
    Thank you.

  • Any way to change system sounds such as File Copy Completed sound?

    Hi folks,
When I copy or move a file, Finder makes a sound — as you know. The particular sound it makes did not sit well with me when I first heard it (new to Mac). It sounds like an alert for a system error, or that copy failed. I thought I would get use to it, but alas, I have not.
Is there a way I can change the sound that is used to notify me when a file copy operation has completed?
    With much thanks,
    Jonathan

    Thanks for the info.
So I gather there is no official osx supported way to modify system sounds?
I got used to the fact that in Linux and Windows I can specify whatever sound I like for whatever system event I like.
    Not the case on OSX?
It begs the question, why did Apple choose such an odd sound for "file copy complete"? To me it sounds like an error occurred or the copy failed. I am getting use to it, but would have liked to be able to change system sounds, without hacking sound files.

  • File Copy Dialog box hangs in mid-copy; Cancel does nothing.

    Hi all,
I'm having the aforementioned issue fairly often with Windows 7.  It seems to happen when copying to network shares.  It is more than annoying--it is literally stopping production at our company.  I would really appreciate an realistic fix
for this--that is, one that isn't the catch-all "Reinstall windows".
Let me further state that it has nothing to do with hardware--I can reliably copy the same files in XP.  It is a Windows 7/Explorer thing.
It also seems to be size-related--but I haven't had the time to do scientific testing to verify this.  I know that if I'm copying an Access .mdb file from my development machine (Windows 7) to a client machine (mostly windows XP) with a mapped drive,
it seems to hang.  But if I compact/repair the .mdb file and bring it from, say 25 meg to 12 meg, it seems to copy fine.
Worse, is that when it hangs, I'll finally hit "Cancel" after a few minutes, and then the entire Windows 7 locks!!  I can't do anything until I ctrl-alt-del and kill the Explorer.exe process, which wipes out my desktop, etc, until Explorer.exe auto-starts.
This is such a huge problem that I  have to think there's a fix upcoming.
    Thanks,
    --Jim

    Hi,
May I know how it works if you copy files between local drives? Please also boot the system to Safe Mode with networking and check this issue.
In addition, may I know more information about the machine which hosts the share folder you mapped is located, a Windows based computer? Please also
let us know the operating system.
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
    1.
Try disabling Receive Side Scaling, Chimney Offload, and NetDMA support and see if it works:

Also run the following commands in Windows 7:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled
    3.
    Try Robocopy:

  • File copy results in kernel task high CPU usage

Copying files over the network, or via external Firewire 800 harddrive invariably results in rather hight cpu utilization for kernel task process. The number are in the range of 15-20% in the Acivity Monitor. To compare, iMac 27", 2009, full speed FireWire bus file copy at 80 mb/sec makes only 2-3% kernel task CPU use. Why is Macbook pro so much worse? Is it due to chipset limitations, or what?

Just now I have been copying some movie files over Gigabit local area network, the data received per second is up to 55 mb, and kernel task consumes 50% or more of CPU. The same task on iMac or on Windows based computer does not tax the CPU in any way, since it is handled properly by network adapter I suppose. So what is wrong with 2010 Macbook Pro?

  • File copy photos to thumbdrive

I'm trying to help a friend (both of us unfamiliar with Macs) copy the photos found in iPhoto to an external thumb drive. There are several thousand photos, so we are trying to do a mass copy by selecting all of them and dragging them to the thumb drive. In doing this, we discovered there are several files that have the same file name. This causes the mass file copy to error.
My question is, is there any way to make this happen where either the mass file copy ignores or overwrites files with the same name so that the bulk or them are copies without having to copy line by line and sometimes file by file?

Select the files and export to a desktop folder using the rename option to name as you wish - drag from that folder to the Thumb drive

I have the latest Airport Extreme with a Seagate drive connected. I copied files to the drive while it was connected to my MacBook Pro. The files do not show up when connected to the AE, but they appear when connected to the Macbook, Files copied over the network to the drive appear. The drive is formatted HFS+.

After playing with this for the last few days, I found a solution. Under the "Disks" tab in Airport Utility, the "Secure Shared Disks" drop down needs to be set to "With device password". Mine was set to "With acounts", which even after correct authentication, none of the files would appear.
Another interesting note:  The files that I could see, the ones I copied over the network, do not appear now. I can copy over new files, and they show up, but the ones copied prior to changing the "Secure Shared Disks" option, do not.
