PC to iMac:  Photoshop to iPhoto

I've been transitioning over the past 3 weeks from the PC world to the Apple one, and after reading everything I could find here (and elsewhere) have had some success in getting my 58k photos into iPhoto.
I was hoping to post a topic which detailed the process I took (since generally people ask questions and get suggestions, but no one seems to go through what they did which worked) and include screencaps. I'm not seeing a way to include external pic links, am I missing something?
I thought this would be helpful, but perhaps it's not needed.

The problem with posting here is that in a day or two it will be lost down the pages.
You could post it to the User Tips Library here
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=599
or blog it and post a link here.
As to posting illustrations: the forum doesn’t host them. You need to upload them somewhere and then post an embed link here to get them into the post. I use Skitch (http://skitch.com/) which is an app with built-in hosting.

My camera Canon G3 (i know it's old) no longer connects to iPhoto (8.1.2) on my iMac, I have checked with my friends iMac same model iPhoto version and it works fine using my cable, I would appreciate any help getting this sorted

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Please help! I have photoshop and iphoto does not show it in my preferences edit window. How do I get it as an option in my preferences.

I tried it and nothing changed. Even when I right click on an indiviual image all it does is duplicate it. Iphoto seems to be recognizing my external hard drive as an editor......cannot get photoshop except to drag a picture into photoshop from iphoto, and once I have worked on it and saved it to iphoto I cant find it anywhere.

  • Get error msg when opening iphoto from Photoshop: "Open iphoto 5 or later..

I get an error msg when trying to open a photo in iPhoto from Photoshop: "Open iPhoto 5 or later to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list." ... but in info it says I have iPhoto '08.... I am confused.... what is iPhoto 5, and how is it different than iPhoto '08? I have not had this issue before today.... previously it was working fine.
Please email me when answered as it took me a while to find this forum and I'm afraid I won't be able to find it again.

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

You are right, but how could i send it to Apple? when the phone company first replaced my iphone they had in stock alots of iphones and they just sent mine back to Apple and gave me a new one, so all i did is to give them my phone, but now how could i sent it to Apple? and i cant send it by myself, and the store wont do that, its a lost for them.. so sending it to Apple wasnt an option from the begining.
and for the record, i dont think the store where i bought it is an authorized shop.. its just a store who boughts phone's from Apple in a low price and sells it in much more money..

  • IMac with the iPhoto application

Using an iMac with the iPhoto application. When trying to email a photo, the message appears to be sent. However, a popup box requests the Yahoo password. When entered, an error message occurs.
Is there a way to set the Yahoo! email username?
Firefox is set to Yahoo! mail.

doesn't yahoo mail need a plus service to be used in such POP applications??

  • Printed images...sRGB vs. iMac color profile / iPhoto vs. PSE...

Hello – I have searched the various forums available, found a wealth of information on the subject, and then became even more confused. So, here goes:
The question is in regards to color profiles on my display vs. color profiles embedded in the printed image.
I have my display set to iMac Color Profile (or should I use the sRGB Profile, which gives the display a coolor, or more bluish overall tint), and then in PSE I have sRGB embedded. When I make a print going through PSE, the colors look good and overall is a pleasant image. When I take the same image and save it into iPhoto and then print it, the overall image is slightly darker and the colors a little more saturated. Overall, another pleasant image, just slightly different.
So, I suppose my question is: what is iPhoto doing that makes the printed image a bit more saturated? How should I have my colors on the display set?
    Thanks.

sRGB is Adobe's default RGB color space. It is the standard for world wide web. It is used by Pantone. In short it is the RGB profile most commonly encountered
I will re-iterate it's not my working RGB space, I don't care for it, I don't consider it ideal for CMYK conversion.
The idea that sRGB is the most common profile is a misconception. That profile was created to simulate an uncalibrated enviroment (monitor).Thats why if you use Photoshop function "Save for Web" it converts to sRGB then strips profile information. And this is only because until recently most web browsers didnt have any Color Management.I know Firefox has but the others until recently didnt (might be diferent know thought).
If its used by Pantone or not I dont know, but if it is I would like to know why and for what purpose cause it doesnt make any sense...
Its not ideal for any print (CMYK convertion) since it's very narrow gamut will most probably clip many satured colors.
The only good thing about it (besides being a grey balanced profile) is that you can be sure the person you send it too will not see many variations (shifts) in color from what youre seing on your calibrated monitor using Photoshop or any other ICC aware aplication.Thats why I always send previews of work in sRGB, because most of the time people that have to evaluate it dont even bother to open them in Photoshop, they use e-mail programs or browsers, let alone calibrated/profiled monitors.
I think the idea behind making it default is just that, being on the safe side.People that are aware of that ussually change it unless theyre working mainly for the Web.
This and much more you can find on the links about Bruce Fraser. He made great contributions to make people aware of Color Management.
    Hope this helps.

  • I cannot export my changes in Lightroom to Photoshop or iPhoto

    Hello,
I have recently acquired Lightroom 1.3 and what a great package. However, I am having a lot of difficulty in exporting my photographs elsewhere.
    For example:
I have converted a number of pictures to black and white using the greyscale feature. Additional tonal adjustments were also made. I wanted to put these photographs into iPhoto as an album. The export process was fine, but all the photographs were converted back to their original colour settings. I tried doing the same using Photoshop CS; the result was identical - all my photos had been restored to their original colour.
I have tried some extensive research looking at forums, exploring FAQ's and answers, referencing Adobe for topics to lend assistance, the instruction book, etc. I am utterly dumbfounded. I am sure there must be a simple solution that I have clearly missed. I would be very grateful for any help and advice offering steps to resolve my plight.
    For further info:
    I have an iMac 2.8GHz Intel Duo Core, 4 GB RAM, OS X 10.5.2. Lightroom 1.3. Photoshop 10.0.1 CS3 Extended. iPhoto 08.
Many thanks in advance for your help
    Adrian Kidd

What you have to do is export the files as JPEGs or Tiffs, or whatever you want. That way you will have a copy of the photo with your lightroom changes baked in. Put all those photos into a folder then import that folder into iPhoto. Remember that LR does not change your original RAW files, so if you just export them, you will only see the original images.
    Hope this makes sense.

  • What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from old imac to new imac. both have iphoto 9.2.1

What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from current imac to my new imac.  Both imacs have iphoto 9.2.1
os on old imac is 10.6.8.   os on new imac is 10.7.2.   I want the albums  and events to stay intact.  I have 4500 photos and 79 videos. 14.9 gb. looking for some advice here. Thanks so much.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Just installed iMac firmware update - iphoto no longer works (beach ball)

I just installed the most recent iMac and keyboard firmware updates. Now when i try to use iphoto it opens quickly and then as soon as i try to do anything i get the spinning beach ball until i force quit. I have no idea how to fix this. I have rebooted and the same results.
    Any ideas?

Well it somehow fixed itself ... now everything works fine ... hopefully it doesn't return.
    Thank you.

  • I just reformat my imac and my iPhoto is gone too. How can i get it reinstall back to my imac? :)

    Hi,
Anyone can help me with this problem? I have no disc to reinstall back also. My imac orginally come with iphoto and stuff. i try to install via Appstore. but i need to pay instead, so i never do that. Please help

Unless you can find your install disk, you'll have to buy them from the App Store.
If they came with your Mac (pre-Lion), they will be on a gray disk that shipped with your Mac.
If you've misplaced those disks, I have heard that Apple will replace them for a small fee. Call AppleCare.
If your Mac came with Lion pre-installed, you should be able to download the apps from the App Store. From the About OS X Recovery article:
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.
