PC to Mac external drive compatibility

Is there a way to make my PC external drive compatible with my macbook pro?

Your Mac can read & write PC Volumes in FAT-32. It can Read but not write NTFS, but there are add-ons that can allow it to write NTFS if you need it.
Windows does not acknowledge that there ARE any other kinds of computers.

Apple replaced my hard drive on my Imac.  I'm lucky I backed up everything on a Seagate Go Flex Desk for Mac external drive via Time Machine .  I followed directions in order to restore my iphoto library , but I can't seem to find it on my computer.  Are the files locked?

No reason to assume they are locked. The library will be restored to the location it was backed up from, unless you specified somewhere else. Have you looked in your Pictures Folder?

  • My imac won't recognize my passport for mac external drive

I just bought a WD my passport for mac external drive to back up my imac with Snow leopard OS. the passport icon doesn't show on the desktop and when I look using disk utility the external drive isn't recognized. The external drive has nothing wrong with it as I plugged it into a newer imac running 10.9.5 and it works fine on that machine. I went through the troubleshooting steps from WD and the only one left is trouble with the OS. I have updated the software and downloaded the drivers from WD and still no change. Any suggestions? thanks!

  • Mac combo drive compatability

We use an eMac G4, currently running OS 10.2.8. This model came with a CD only drive. In order to upgrade to Tiger, we had a Samsung 16X DVDRW with LightScribe installed in the Mac. We were also having problems with the cd drive, so this seemed like a better option than an external drive or getting the cd version of 10.4
When we put the OS 10.4 disc in, "Mac" just sits there. The new drive is reading cd, cd-rom, games on dvds, but not dvd. We don't have iLife, so we don't have iDVD. Could this be the problem or might it be something else?
    Thanks!

    mumx6,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Generally, if a third-party internal optical drive isn't working out of the box, your first stop would be Patchburn. Unfortunately, the FAQ there notes that while Patchburn works with most drives, there are a handful that don't play by the stnadard rules, specificaly citing Samsung as the primary offender. You might try searching the xlr8yourmac site for your specific drive model under Database> Drive compatability. I doubt the Superdrive Firmware Update applies to your drive, but it shouldn't hurt to try it.

  • HT1751 What is the best way to move my iTunes library from an external PC drive to a Mac external drive?

I just make the move to Mac computers.  My iTunes library is currently on a PC formatted external drive.  I would like to move it to an external drive that i have formatted for Mac.  What is the best way to do this?

Is the entire library on the external drive or just the media folder? If it is the latter, and you still have access to the PC then see make a split library portable.
If the drive is in FAT32 format you can connect a portable library directly to the Mac, holding down Option as you start iTunes. Otherwise you either need to copy it to a local drive (Mac should be able to read NTFS) or install a full service NTFS driver so that the library can be read and updated.

  • Just purchased 27" iMac had my iTunes library on PC on an external drive I've been trying to copy from pc external drive to mac external drive. at a certain point while copying i get error system 8260 unable to continue any suggestions

trying to copy my Itunes music library from external drive(previously had PC) to new hard drive. at a certain point system error 8260 warning appears unable to continue coppying

What formats are the two drives?  NTSF on the PC side is usually not readable by Macs unless they have changed something recently or you are using some third party support.
Since this is a file copying issue and not really iTunes, you might wish to have this moved to the Lion forums since people there might recognize it.  I couldn't find that error anywhere on the web for Mac.

  • Transferring large library from PC external drive to Mac external drive

I have a library with 600 GB on my pc / windows 7. The media content is on an external drive, since my PC has only an internal drive with 500 GB space. now I want to transfer the library to my new Mac book, which has an internal flash drive with 256 GB. Because the internal flash drive could not hold the complete media, I bought an external drive fior the Mac where I want to move the library to. Also I have many playlists on my old library which also should move.
Any clues how I can Move the iTunes from PC to Mac?

Seems like a round about way of moving the library. A much easier way would have been to copy the iTunes folder from your internal onto the external drive where you library already resides. Now open iTunes with these instructions...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
and point it to the external drive location. If all goes well you library should open like it always has but now you are using ALL files off the external and none from the internal. Your library is now completely located on the external, database files and all.
To move it to any other location including a larger drive, simply copy the iTunes stuff to the new location and again use the above instructions to point iTunes to the new location and it should open as it was before on your new larger hard drive.
No XML files to mess with doing it that way.

  • PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!! Transferring music Mac external drive- Windows

Hello my fellow community members. I have an external hard drive where I used to back up my MacBook's hard drive, and more importantly my iTunes music collection, a decade long culmination of my ever changing musical tastes. The MacBook finally gave out on me and now the only computer I have access to apart from my iPad is a PC running windows 7. So my question is, how can I transfer my iTunes folder off of my Macbook's external drive onto the Windows 7 PC? And also, would there possibly be some kind of USB extension I can get for the iPad that could possible allow me to access those files on the drive? but most importantly is transferring that entire folder onto the PC. If someone could please help me I would greatly appreciate it. I would be devastated if I lost my collection. About 90% of my collection wasn't purchased on iTunes so iCloud is no help for the majority of it. So please, help a brother out as they say!!!!!!!

There is no way to connect any iOS device via USB to an external drive.
What format is the external drive in?  If it is not in NTFS format, the windows computer will not be able to read the data on it.

  • Pc and external drive compatibility

My HP Compaq presario does not recognize a new usb external hard drive. Any suggestions?

Assuming the drive in question is USB, then Windows should be able to use it.  The possiblity of bad USB ports or a failed external drive may come into play.  Try it on a different computer to see if the drive actually works OK.  If yes, then try a different USB port on the computer in question.  There is a possibilty that if this new drive is really big, 3TB and the Windows is old, they might not work together.  What is this new drive - make and model?
Oh yeah Windows version, too please

  • My Seagate 80GB EHD is shown in Finder Mac External Drive but it will allow action to Verify or Repair. If there any hope to fix with software like Paragon NTFS?

My Seagate EHD seems to have died long ago even though it was spinning, the LED was on and I thought everything was backing up automatically. Working by phone with an Apple CTU Advisor 03/15/2015 to correct iCloud Keychain Security Code prompts, we determined there is reason to suspect the Seagate EHD failed way back whenever. Before I give up on the Seagate I'd like to check and use all resources and advice of others. With guidance from Seagate Tech Support I ran their diagnostics procedure which failed at the Verify step. I presume the EHD cannot work and will probably have to replace it. Can anyone out there in A. C. help?

Are there files on the drive that you're hoping to recover? If so give DataRescue a try http://www.prosofteng.com/datarescue4/
it has a free demo you can try to see if there are recoverable files and if there are you then need to pay for the full version if your files are worth it. If you're not worried about files throw it away 80GB isn't worth fooling with.

If all you're trying to do is move the files from the Windows external to the Mac external, you can simply connect them both to the Mac and drag the files from the Windows drive to the Mac drive. If you want to move the files back and forth between them, you'll need to establish the format of the Windows external. Macs can read and write to FAT32 and exFAT (which can handle files larger than 4GB) formatted drives but can only read NTFS formatted drives without additional software. With the Windows drive connected, you can check its format with Disk Utility.
