PC to Mac Lightroom 4 to 5

I currently have  the full version Lightroom 4 installed on my PC and I am thinking about replacing the PC with a Mac.  I would like to upgrade to Lightroom 5.  Do I need to buy a full version for the Mac or do I upgrade my existing version?

The license is cross platform as is the Lightroom Catalog where all you work in LR 4 is stored. Would be good to retain a copy of this file to have it converted to a compatable LR 5 copy in due course.

I'll have to get a better instructor on deleting the preferences since when I've doen it in the past nothing is there when I open LR the catalog is gone. I assumed that was what was supposed to happen so I start importing all over again.  But that is a different issue...
The problem has been happening since at least the beta of 3 came out and I saw other posts back then saying they had similar issues but I assume it was a beta thing...  But since the full version came out and through each incremental change I haven't seen an improvement. If anything it has gotten a little worse with time.
I have to try to be careful to not be in a hurry and start clicking around in the catalog as it seems fragile until it has cataloged all the photos in the library. When starting you will see the numbers populate the folders very slowly and I try not to click on a folder that hasn't had the number of photos pop up yet. Also draging the slider down to see more of the cataloge can have the same affect and crash the system.
I wish I had more to go on.. I believe it may be a resources issue but as I went from 3-4 Gig I thought it would get better. I don't have big programs running but did have outlook and word running in the background along with firefox and chrome.
And yes it only happens on this HP desktop (it's 2+ yrs old) and may be showing it's age a bit. My laptop which has less resources doesn't have the issue.. I have them sharing the catalog. (not at the same time) just when I'm working in other places in the house.

  • Export Catalog from PC Photoshop Elements 10 and Import Catalog to Mac Lightroom CC - How please?

    Hello
I am running Photoshop Elements 10 on a Windows 7 PC and I want to move it to my Mac Lightroom CC / Photoshop CC.
I understand I need to export the catalog from PSE 10 and then import it to Lightroom or Photoshop CC.
I wonder if I could get some advice on how to do this?
    Many thanks

  • Windows Elements to Mac Lightroom

I'm switching from Elements on a Windows PC to Lightroom on a Mac Pro. Is there a way I can import my Elements library so that I don't lose tags, captions and whatever other things I've saved with the images there? Or am I only able to import the images themselves to LR? If I have to do the later, what do I lose?
    TIA, Kelly

Perhaps off topic, in which case I apologize, however, I'm struggling with the exact same scenario. I have ca. 11,000 images in a Windows Elements 3 catalog. It's a great product, I love it, but I'm moving to a Mac.
From what I can tell, Mac Elements prior to the new 6.0 release did not support the organizer feature. But, from the marketing info it appears the new Elements 6.0 for the Mac does support the organizer. Can anyone verify or refute my understanding.
So, my question is which makes more sense as far as moving to the Mac:
    1. use elements 6.0 for the mac?
    2. run windows elements under a virtualization product (e.g., parallels) on my Mac.
    3. convert to Lightroom for the mac.
    4. convert to Apeture? (fwiw, have tried this with limited success.)
    5. convert to iPhoto? (seems too lightweight and loses data.)
    6. something else.
I'd love to hear other's thoughts on this. I definitely do not want to lose the tagging, collections, date adjustments, and captions in a move.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • It seems that I have lost all my photos/catalogs on my Mac - Lightroom 5.  When turning on Lightroom there are no photos listed and nothing comes up.

Upon turning on Lightroom 5 on my Mac Book Pro there are no photos listed in the Library.  I do have external backup but need to understand what might have happened that I have lost the photos and how to get them back into lightroom.  I was editing earlier in the day and now nothing! It is as though I never imported any photos - says photos 0.

Look under File->Open Recent, try the catalogs listed there.

  • Question: Do Any Mac/Lightroom users use a case-sensitive filesystem?

I know most people use the default case-insensitive Mac filesystem. But plugins may have issues in a case-sensitive filesystem (if not explicitly programmed to handle case), which I just learned is an option for Mac users. Just wondering if any Lightroom users actually do it.
    Thanks,
    Rob

I'm starting to think that having a case-sensitive filesystem on Mac would only be done by people with very special purposes in mind - e.g. developers who want to test unix command-line apps..., and would "always" be accompanied by case-insensitive volumes for normal Mac use - e.g. Lightroom-data/plugins/photos...
    Ya think?
    Almost certainly.
As I mentioned before, case-sensitivity is required for, among other things, POSIX compliance, which is of particular interest to a segment of the enterprise and interoperability spaces. Microsoft achieves this by a kernel change (and one of two POSIX-for-Windows licensed libraries) and offering a case-sensitive file system, NTFS. Apple achieves this by offering a way to make HFS+ case-sensitive, with kernel services and a BSD POSIX subsystem that is case-sensitive to the extent the file system is.
Note that apps that treat filespecs as unique when they differ only in case are not necessarily "poorly coded" as this would depend on context and application. There are some very, very good reasons to do so. In fact, one could make an argument that apps that cannot handle a case-sensitive environment are the poorly coded examples. Blindly assuming the case of a filespec makes it unique, or rewriting an existing filespec to a "corrected" one, are very dangerous assumptions.
For most of us, the defaults are more natural, and I would hazard a guess that Lr gets little or no QA under such environments. I know of at least one corner-case (exposed here) that would probably break.

  • Mac Lightroom 4 Videos not importing

    I'm running Lightroom 4.1 on Mac OS X 10.7.4.
I just installed Lightroom. Lightroom will not import any of my video files. After import fails to import them into the lightroom library it tells me "there is a problem with the video file" and it lists all of my videos.
90% of my videos were shot on various iPhones.
I have read the troubleshooting video (http://helpx.adobe.com/content/help/en/lightroom/kb/troubleshoot-video-issues-lightroom-4. html#main-pars_heading_3) and did not find it helpful.
Google searches are not panning out either.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't help. Must be something to do with my OS or the way it's configured (maybe some installed codecs?) as it works on my desktop but not laptop. But then I have a whole bunch of other stuff on my desktop that may have changed the basic configuration. One thing I notice is that there is no preview possible in the import window on LR with my mov files - from memory (not at home ATM) the preview was there on my desktop. So that maybe points to a codec issue?

  • Where does Mac Lightroom 4.4 store all its preferences?

I have a problem importing video into Lightroom 4.4 on Mac OS X 10.9.4, and the problem goes away if I test with a brand new user account.  I'm trying to recreate this virgin state in my main user account by deleting all the Lightroom preferences.  But so far I haven't been able to ferret out all the places Lightroom stores preferences.  Here's what I'm deleting so far (all relative to my home directory):
    "Library/Application Support/Adobe" folder
"Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Lightroom4.plist" file (actually tried all com.adobe.* files)
    "Pictures/Lightroom" directory (catalog, etc)
    "Library/Caches/com.adobe.Lightroom4" directory
    "Library/Caches/Adobe" directory
Lightroom menu => Preferences => File Handling => Video Cache Settings => "Purge Cache" button
Even after deleting all that, Lightroom menu => Preferences => General items still persist (e.g. the "Automatically check for updates" checkbox and the two completion sounds), my recent catalogs in File => Open Recent still persist, and my video import problem still persists.  I believe I've covered all the files listed here, so there must be some other place where Lightroom is storing preferences.  What am I missing?  Thanks in advance!

Thanks John R. Ellis, but I used that reference and deleted all the preference files listed there (see original post).  Some preferences persist even still.  I believe there must be some files missing from that list?  Or there's some other way that my preferences are sticking around?
I'll try to change the title to be more clear about that.  Thanks in advance for any insight.
(--edit-- I can't change the title of the original post...)

If you rented the film on your iPhone or Apple TV then you can't transfer it - when you rent on an iOS device you can only watch it on that iOS device.
The only way to be able to move rentals is if you rent them on your computer's iTunes (you can't use AirDrop nor Bluetooth) : How to rent a movie from the iTunes Store on your computer
Once the rental is downloaded, you can watch it on your computer or transfer the rental to a supported iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV (1st generation):
Connect the device and select it in iTunes.
    Click the Movies button.
Select the movie, and then click Move.
After all movies have been moved, click Apply in the lower-right corner of iTunes.
You must be connected to the Internet to transfer a rented movie.
For purchases from the store, not rentals, you should be able to copy them from your phone to your computer's iTunes library via the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases menu option
For AirDrop, there is a bit of info on this page : Use AirDrop to wirelessly share content.

  • Maximum File Capacity of Mac Lightroom

I am using version 1.3.1 on my Mac Pro with a 2 Terabyte 3ware Sidecar Raid 5.
I have nearly 100,000 images imported into LR. Performance is ok now. I am shooting continuously and have 80,000+ images still to import.
Are there any limits to the quantity of photos that a LR catalog can hold before I have problems?
Is there anything I should be looking out for now?
Thanks for your help in advance,
    Kathryn

You have the advantage over most users in having a hardware raid system so you have very high data transfer rate, without using CPU cycles to do the raid calculations. I suspect that the rumoured slowdown might not hit you so hard. Let us know how it goes when you get the whole library imported.

  • If I edit a photo in Photoshop Elements, I can't seem to re-import it back into Lightroom. If I open the relevant folder on my Mac the image is present, but Lightroom just doesn't "see" it at all.

For some reason, my (Mac) Lightroom 5 won't recognise images in folders on my Mac that I've edited in either Photoshop Elements or Perfect Effects 8. If I've previously imported images from a specific folder, Lightroom will show these as greyed-out images (as normal) but will not show other images I've subsequently saved in that folder. Similarly, if I, say, select three images from Lightroom to use the Photomerge option in Elements, the subsequent saved image won't be recognised by Lightroom.
I've tried moving locations, saving in umpteen different formats etc., but the problem persists. No problem importing existing images from either SD card or old folders on the computer.
    It's very frustrating!

Ah-Ha! Right, think I've worked out the problem!
When I save a photo from Photoshop, I often place it on the desktop with a view to e-mailing it or posting it somewhere on the internet. I've just looked at the file that was supposedly saved as a .psd, but under "properties" it has no file extension. So I added the .psd and bingo, up it popped in the LR import window! I've since gone into Photoshop preferences & ticked it to add a file extension. That's really odd - I've never deselected that option but, hey ho, mystery solved.
Many thanks for your patience Mr Paige, I should have looked at this before. Put it down to advancing senility...
