The external HD might be set to Read Only on your eMac.  Try this:
If the external HD shows on your desktop, single click the HD to highlight it.  From the Finder Menu bar at the top of the screen, click on File, pull down and click on Get Info.  At the bottom of window that opens, under Sharing and Permissions, you might see something like:
    System:  Read & Write
    Admin:  Read & Write
    User X:  Read Only
User X being your user account.
    Good luck.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your best method would be to connect via USB and transfer that way, since videos are not transferred using photostream.
However you can stop photos on your mac being added to photostream in the iPhoto preferences > photostream by unchecking the automatic upload box.

  • Mac will not eject disc, mac will not eject disc

My mac will not eject a Drive Genius 2 Disc and if you reboot computer it just pops disc menu back up and wont let you do antything.

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • To Secure Mac or not to secure Mac??????

I am fairly new to Mac, switching over from PC, and one of the biggest hurdles that I have come across is protection of the computer. Is it advisable to get a protection for Anti-Spyware, Adware and Virus protection for this system. If so does anyone have any suggestions as to which are the best one to use.
When I ask at the Apple Store they always say that none of that is necessary and I was just wondering what the people out there that have been using Mac, think.
I figure that it can't hurt to have it, but if it is just waisted space on my computer that can possibly slow down the computer, then why have it if not needed.
I thank all of you in advance for help in this matter........Apps224

Welcome to Apple Discussions and welcome to Mac
While there are no known viruses that attack Mac OS X at the present time it is possible (though improbable) for other malware to get onto your Mac.
So I go to lenghts to protect my user. A hosed system can be replaced but a compromised user folder is compromised forever. Along with all your important data like bank records, credit cards, ... I.e. your "identity" stolen.
The best way to avoid that is by being a frustrating target. Use your built-in firewall which is industrial strength and/or a hard wired router, downloading only from "trusted" sites, installing all security updates and being careful about what you give administrative power to.
Don't use Limewire or any other P2P service to download your software, get it from reputable sources. In addition, always keep at least your users backed up, preferably a clone of your entire system on a separate disk. And put your sensitive passwords, bank accounts, credit card numbers in a "secure note" in a new keychain or in an encrypted folder.
If and when a Mac virus does appear it will be headline news and you can download the AV software then. If you feel you have to run an AV program I'd suggest ClamXav a mac friendly freeware app that is very stable with OS X. It will check for known virus signatures at any rate.
    Hope this helps.

  • BootCamp XP recognizes internal Mac Volume not the Firewire Mac Volume!

BootCamp 3.1 / XP only recognizes the internal Mac Volume, but not the FireWire 800 external Mac drive!
Do I need MacDrive software in order to see the external FireWire drive or is there better software than the MacDrive?

BootCamp will only install Window's on an "Internal" drive with no more then 2 partitions.
You would need a 3rd party "Drive Software" to install it on an EXternal drive. I don't know which ones work but they have been mentioned in these forums so maybe do a search for something like: "Window's external HD install?"
    Good Luck....

  • Print Crash on Intel Macs but not on PPC Macs

I have two MacBooks exhibiting the same problem. When I try to print from nearly any application over the network, the application quits when I try to print. I restart the application and it usually prints. The printer I try to print to is an HP Deskjet 6540 that is shared from a G5. The G5 has no problems printing to the same printer; it never crashes. The log has been unhelpful -at least to me. I have already reset the printing system and manually installed the printers from scratch a couple of times to no avail. Any ideas would be apreciated!

    Hi there,
You may have a compatibility problem with PowerPC and Universal applications and drivers.
Your MacBooks are Intel-based. Most of the supplied applications are written in Universal Binary, meaning that they will work on Intel and PowerPC Mac's. But there are still a lot of applications and drivers that are written just for the PowerPC chip and to work on the Intel they have to use an emulator called Rosetta.
If the driver that is installed for the HP is PPC, then sometimes that can cause spooler errors, especially ones written in Universal. The workaround is to get a Universal version of the driver or to make the application run using Rosetta.
Now, given that the HP is shared by the G5, this may be causing the problem also. The HP driver on the G5 will be PPC and if you have added the printer on the MacBooks by just connecting to the share, then you may have PPC drivers installed instead of Universal but more of a problem is that you will have version differences. I have seen this cause the most amount of problems for shared printers.
Check HP's web site for the latest version of driver for the printer. If they have a Universal version, then download this and install it on all Mac's so that you are using the same version on all three. (You may find this driver is already installed on your MacBook's so if you can get the same version for your G5 that would help heaps).

Ok Apple users...Is there a way to delete e-mails on my Mac and not have to delete the same e-mails on my iPhone, and iPad...and vise-versa. I have the Cloud, and thought that everything would sync all of the time. If you know of a setting I need to adjust, please let me know.

Are you referring to @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com emails? Or some other email providers emails?
If the former, it should do that automatically. If the latter, no. iCloud does not (nor is it supposed to) sync non-Apple provided emails.

  • Iphone and Ical on mac do not sync anymore. All my events are in the iphone calendar! How do I backup iphone calendar, and how do I fix the syncronizing problem?

After getting iCloud the iCal on my mac does not sync with my iPhone calendar. All of my calendar notes are in my iPhone (while the mac's Ical remains empty) so I need to backup the iphone version. How?
Itunes says that "your calendars are being syncronized with iphone using icloud" - but the mac's ical does not show any of the new events I have added on my iphone.
I would like to install the new update on my iphone, but I am afraid to do it without knowing that I will be able to restore my iphone calendar. I have made calendar events for many years to come, I and will not risk losing them!
I have been looking for tips online, but the solutions usually suggest that I backup the ical on the mac and start fresh using this version. In other words overwrite iphone calendar with the ical from the mac. Which is not an option. What can I do?

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.
When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.
Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

  • To Mac, or not to Mac, that is the question...

Okay, so I don't know if I'm allowed to ask this in this forum, but I'll give it a try anyway.
I will be starting college in the fall and will need a computer. I've had myself convinced for a while now that I want a MacBook...but now I'm starting to have second thoughts.
It's just that I've always used PCs in my life, I know how to do anything I want really on a PC, and I don't know if it's worth the bother to relearn a whole new system. Plus, I mean, I'm starting college, I should know how to use my computer before going, don't you agree? Just how hard is it to adjust?
Another issue is the whole windows/mac os thing in that I'm worried about programs running on it. I don't really understand how Boot Camp works. You just install Windows XP (do you have to buy it? is it a special mac version?) and your Mac turns into a Windows machine? As in it looks just like my HP lap top looks now, wiht the bar at the bottom, etc.? But then I've read some posts on these threads and ppl say you could get viruses that way b/c you are using windows. Which is one of the reasons I would want to switch to a mac. If you do use Windows and the Mac OS, you can just switch back and forth whenever you want? Are all the programs and files the same then in both systems? Like I wouldn't want half my files to be in one program and the other half in another. I don't know, I don't really understand it all.
Also, my mom got a MacBook and I guess they bought a new laser printer yesterday and had to return it today b/c they realized it's not apple compatible. They went to Office Max and realized barely any printers are apple compatible! The had the toughest time finding an affordable printer that they liked! How can this be? Is this how it's always going to be when I'm buying accessories?
I just love all the features the Mac has. I am constantly frustrated w/ Windows and all the **** viruses and adware I have on my computer, which is a major reason for my wanting to switch. FrontRow seems like the coolest thing ever. And the cool magnet things. And I already have an iPod, so they'd run nicely together. Plus, it's pretty. (I know it's a dumb reason to buy a computer, but I'm a girl, what can I say, that stuff is important to me.)
So anyway, I'm now debating between a MacBook and a tablet PC, possibly Gateway or IBM. Could anyone try to convince me one way or the other (considering I'm on a Mac discussion board, I'm sure it'll be the Mac way)? Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your help.

My guess is that you're likely to find more Mac users at a college than most other areas, so I wouldn't worry too much about 'making the switch' right before going to college -- you'll have lots of help nearby.
    Boot Camp is pretty cool!
It's a free utility from Apple that basically prepares your Mac so it can run Windows XP. Boot Camp divides your hard drive into seperate areas (partitions) -- one for OS X and another for XP. Boot Camp doesn't come with a copy of Windows XP -- you'll need to provide that. The XP that Boot Camp installs isn't a special version for Mac -- it's the same version that runs on any computer, although to work with Boot Camp, you'll need an XP install CD that has Service Pack 2 applied. Once XP has been installed on your Macbook, it should look (and act) like XP on your HP (with the exception of any special tools/programs that HP loaded on your HP laptop, obviously).
When you restart your MacBook, it will boot into whichever OS that you set as the default. If you want to boot into the other OS, you just hold down the OPTION key when you restart and then you pick which OS to load. Your computer is basically divided into two systems, so no, programs are not automatically on both systems. If you install the Mac version of Microsoft Office in OS X, you're not going to have Excel/Word/etc when you boot into XP unless you specifically install the Windows version of Microsoft Office.
Regarding accessories, you always need to check that they work with OS X. My printer was a problem too. It was an el cheapo Samsung laser printer and Samsung apparently didn't feel like spending the money to write OS X drivers for it, but it turned out that an older Samsung OS X driver worked just fine. I had zero problems getting my Kodak camera to work -- I just plugged it in an OS X started using it ... no drivers to install or anything, which made it way easier than the crap I had to do in XP to get XP to see it. My iPod nano worked with no problems too.
I really, really love my MacBook. I don't know when you have to make your decision, but try using your moms as much as you can (if you can). I bought a Mac mini for my other half last year (birthday present). I had NO interest at that time in Macs or OS X, but after a few days of watching over his shoulder, I was hooked and got myself a mini (and then a PowerBook and then a MacBook Pro and then a MacBook) .. it's addicting.

  • My Mac will not let me install any software I download. In some cases (Like quicktime) i get a message that says "Can't create the folder" I have it with adobe air and its creating all sorts of issues. My software is up to date and I have 10.8.2.

A whole bunch of issues here.
I can't install any software. It started when iPlayer stopped working at all.  This led me to try to update software versions such as Adobe Air to 3.5 (Failed) then quicktime player 7.6.6 as recommended (Failed) then the printer packed up and I have tried to install the downloaded software drivers for Canon from the Apple site (Failed again)
In all cases they let me download so I have the file, but not install.
Quicktime tells me it can't install a file "/var/folders/15....then a long string of numbers....ending in T//install.1347YKihUc".
The Canon Print Driver has a very similar message.
Adobe Air says "An error occurred whilst installing....contact my administrator" which is me and I am fine with it ;-)
Remember this all started because my iPlayer (and my printer) just stopped working and I have been trying to fix those.
I am a bit techy but not much.
    Can anyone assist?
    Many Thanks.
    Fozzie65

I have Firefox 3.6.6, and now that Firefox 4.0 is available, it crashes constantly. Sometimes less than 5 minutes after I open it. I have a Mac 10.4.11, so Firefox 4.0 isn't an option for me. When I asked Ff to check my plug-ins it said there was an error and to check back later. Twice.
Because I didn't have any (any) problems with my Ff before the upgrade became available, I am forced to question if Ff has done something to make the earlier version crash so you'll upgrade, but I can't afford to upgrade my Mac right now.
In the meantime, I do need a browser that works! I dislike Safari, Chrome is also not available on Mac 10.4.11, and Explorer is just plain not available on Mac.
Do you have any suggestions on how to fix my Firefox 3.6.6?
    Ty
