PC to MAC reformatting 1st Gen ipod?

I want to reformat my 1st generation PC ipod to MAC.
Is this possible?
My PC laptop has all but died, so would i need to connect my ipod back to the PC first, or can I use ipod updater connecting it directly into my G5?
Obviously I would like to keep my music if possible.
I know it's about time I upgraded, but this little fella has been with me for years.

Can the reverse be done?
Yes, you can. For formatting, connect your iPod with
a PC, and a window will pop up, and asking whether
you want to do a format, click "yes",then open iTunes
7, click Restore.
For 3rd party software to copy your music on your
iPod to the iTunes on your PC, download and install
"YamiPod" (please do a search on Google".
So it this true even for hte very first iPod?? The iPod that is NOT click wheel and does not have the dock connector? I mean it's really that OLD of an iPod.

I had an 8GB 1st gen iPod in it's original box in storage and just took it out to hook it up.  Charged it overnight, plugged it into new Mac Book Pro and it was recognized as being an iPod in recovery but other identifying information was all indicated as "n/a" (so, unknown OS, etc).  Error code 1604 came up so I downloaded iTunes on the Mac Book and it is currently showing version 10.  But now when I try to restore the iPod, error code 1611 comes up and the troubleshooting doesn't tell me what else to try.  The USB connector that came with the iPod was also never used before - brand new also from the box so that should be fine.  I also tried a different USB port on the Mac Book.  Any ideas?

I have mac os x 10.4.11& 1st gen ipod touch 2.2.1, so what itunes version do I need to use?

Thank you!  The box says it is, but I have learned that the newer versions of itunes won't work.  I had an older version than the box requirements, but was not sure how high I could go, so thanks again!

  • TS1410 My Mac recognises all devices apart from 1st gen ipod touch

Just bought a 1st gen ipod touch for my 2 year old to play games on but despite connecting to wifi and charging on its dock, it fails to be recognised on our MacBook, despite all our other devices being problem free!?!

If you are using the USB docking cable connected to the same USB port, when you connect the iPod touch versus the "other devices," the problem may dock connector on the iPod touch.  What are the "other devices"?
When you say "charging on its dock," is that a different power-only connection?  Or is that dock connected to the USB port on your Mac with a docking cable?  If it's connected to the Mac through that dock accessory, what happens when you connect the iPod touch directly to the docking cable?
If you have another USB docking cable, try it with the iPod touch using a direct connection to the Mac's USB port (no dock or USB hub).

  • Any 1st Gen iPod users out there? M8541

All this talk about shiny new iPods has got me all nostalgic over my lovely old 1st gen scroll wheel model (M8541). Alas the hard disk died on that a year ago and it's been gathering dust ever since.
I've been Googling trying to find others in the same predicament, and hopefully some details on how to obtain a new/refurbed hard disk and bring the old timer back to life. Alas, I've not got very far as yet, which either means my searching skills aren't up to much, or it's just way too difficult so no-one's succeeded.
What I'd really like is to find some kind of flash memory with the same ATA-5 interface used by the original disk, so I can have something a bit more durable in there. I'm sure this must be possible and am hoping there might be someone out there who's tried the same or knows enough to convince me I'm wasting my time.
I've found what looks like a viable replacement disk here :
    http://www.evertek.com/viewpart.asp?auto=14710
Price is good too, though the part number is MK5002MAL-R where my original doesn't have the -R on the end, so not sure it's a drop-in replacement.
    Help, anyone?

  • 1st gen iPod touch not showing in iTunes 10.6

    Hi
though it was about time to update my music on my 1st gen iPod Touch, however, when i connected it to iTunes it does not show up.
    Is anyone able to assist?
I have tried hard resets and it doesn't work.
Have Apple stopped supporting the 1st gen Touch?
    Regards

I am having a similar issue. I have a 1st-generation iPod touch, and a MacBook running Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.3) and iTunes 9.1.1. It's a bit old now and the WiFi isn't very good, but my iPod touch still works perfectly, except that it doesn't show up in iTunes, which I discovered yesterday when I tried to sync some new music. I got my iTouch G1 the first week they came out and it worked perfectly with my iBook G4 running Tiger, and also worked perfectly with my new MacBook running Leopard which replaced the iBook when its logic board bit the dust. I recently updated to Snow Leopard (about a month ago now), and now my iTouch doesn't show up in my iTunes sidebar, but a volume shows up in Disk Utility that could only be this iPod and things do happen when I plug in the iPod (the first time I connected it since I added some Snow to my Leopard, iPhoto opened and prompted a download of a screenshot I'd taken with the iPod). I'm mostly writing this right now because the support page pertinent to this issue is down due to some sort of Apple web maintenance and I'm tired of getting the same error message. I actually have everything on my Mac backed up, and when I installed Snow Leopard I just did a basic installation but have been thinking of going back and doing a clean wipe and install and then getting the iTunes and iPhoto libraries et cetera off of my external HD. Would this fix my problem? I figure that since my iPod touch's files and system have been constant throughout this, it must be some issue with Snow Leopard, however before I wipe everything and have to set my system up again from scratch, I would like to know if this problem would be fixed by doing that or if there is some problem inherent in Snow Leopard that needs to be manually fixed.

  • 1st gen iPod purchased music syncing?

Is that new feature only an option on the new iPod?
I have a 1st gen iPod that has been tied to my machine at home. I have a machine at work with the same iTunes login. I bought a bunch of music at work and some at home. Am I reading this right that I should now be able to put my purchased music on my iPod regardless of the machine it was purchased on? (as long as the computer is logged in as the same)
I have not updated iTunes at home, only at work. At work, I plug in my iPod and tell it, under the music tab, to sync selected playlists and check the "purchased" box. Hit apply, it unchecks it. OR... Right click on the iPod and tell it to "transfer purchases." Nothing. No response.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi all - any idea how to download songs from an old AOL iTunes account - have updated to Apple ID which is fine for new songs but didn't realise this wouldn't include the old songs.  Have a 1st gen ipod with the original purchases on if that helps

Hi all - any idea how to download songs from an old AOL iTunes account - have updated to Apple ID which is fine for new songs but didn't realise this wouldn't include the old songs.  Have a 1st gen ipod with the original purchases on if that helps

....... is there a way for me to get my old music library (which was controlled by my dad's apple ID) onto my new mac, but from that point on, start using my own apple ID for purchases?........
Yes, once the content is in iTunes on your computer, just click it to play and authorise your computer to play it by entering your Dad's ID and password.
Log into your own account and start purchasing your own content which will then be added to the existing content.

Can someone tell me how to go back to a previous version of the OS/Firmwere.
Sorry I do not know - but I suggest you try the following first
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    Then
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

  • So WHY would I want to purchase iOS3 for my 1st gen iPod?

Hi there. I've just upgraded my MacBook hdd and OS X. Now when I plug my 1st gen iPod touch in to sync, it says that there's an iOS 3 available and that 2-4 gen iPods get it for free, but 1st gen have to purchase it.
Unfortunately, my iPod doesn't seem to be syncing without this upgrade. So, either there's something wrong or else they're trying to force me to buy it (though it doesn't ay so). I'm not against purchasing an upgrade if I see the advantages. But as it stands, I'm quite happy with my iPod the way it is. I've looked and looked, but I can't find anything that tells my WHY I would want to purchase an upgrade. Mac support pages are completely vague, just explaining that 1st gen must pay for it.
    Any insight into the sitch?

    Hi Jolly Giant,
Thanks, but I was hoping for a more subjective, feedback sort of answer.
I did see that Wiki, but it doesn't answer me really. It gives me technical stuff, but nothing that seems to make it stand out from the former iOS's that explains why a user would find it advantageous to purchase it. It includes a little bug fix for this, a little bug fix for that, security upgrades...all stuff standard to regular OS updates that no one should have to pay for. Not why apple would require one to BUY it. (e.g. upgrading from one OS X to a newer one includes pretty obvious new features.) No outstanding new features jump out at me when staring at that dry dry listing of whatnot.
Looking at it again, it seems that it might be useful for an iPhone as an upgrade. But for the iPod touch it seems absurd to force us to buy it.
I've upgraded my iTunes, and NOW it says that my iPod IS up-to-date. Still, it won't sync (although it recognizes my iPod just find.) What is the deal?!

  • Swapping drives in 1st gen iPod.

It's not clear whether I should be posting here or in the "iPod Classic" forum.  I thought all of the first 5 or 6 generations if iPod were now classified as "Classic."
Oh, well.  I have a 5GB 1st gen. iPod (white, click wheel) that has died.  An iPod service specialist examined it and said the logic board is bad.  I'd like to recover the music on my iPod, so I went on eBay & purchased a working 5GB 1st gen. iPod.
I got my non-working iPod back from the repair service, pulled the drive, & put my drive in the 5GB 1st gen. iPod I purchased on eBay.  But none of the contents appear—it's as if the drive were empty.
Am I missing something here?  Is there some "trick" to swapping hard drives between identical model iPods?  My iPod was formatted for Mac, but the iPod I got from eBay also appears to be formatted for Mac.  I can't come up with a hypothesis whereby my drive got wiped, so I think the contents have to still be there.

hi. i am not following a lot of this since it seems very technical and is too abbreviated a presentation for me to understand.
that said, i have /one/ WD 1 TB blue drives that have Lion installed on it with the Windows 7 Boot Camp workaround described by that url i got from you which failed in the last two or three months and i just now had a SECOND drive (it was simply a daily Carbon Copy Clone of the original drive described above) which failed within the last two weeks.
i am pretty sure i had one other new WD drive (a 2 TB black caviar one) fail in this machine within the last year and this seems like a tone of drives failing.
not sure i have anything special going on and the method of failure detection is simply Tech Tools reporting bad sectors which i am told is in fact indicating failure...
    am i missing something?
    also on this:
"No to DU to zero a drive, better than nothing but you have Windows, you can run WD's own utility which is much better (works on non-WD also)"
you are saying that downloading WD software is going to let me zero out my drives better than Disk Utility does? if so, how do i use this? i have mac OS and boot camp on my OS drive and MAC OS on my data drive and then i have two clones (one clone of each of these). you want me to d/l WD software while booted into Windows somehow before partitioning the drive or using DU to format it for Mac? i don't understand this very well apparently...
    THANKS

  • Could not restore 1st gen ipod touch unknown error occurred(2003)

could not restore 1st gen ipod touch unknown error occurred(2003)

    Error 2000-2009 (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, and so on)
If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software. If the errors persist on another computer and known-good USB cable, the device may need service.
Also, have you looked at the previous discussions listed on the right side of this page under the heading "More Like This"?

  • Issues with iTunes and 1st gen iPod Touch

Since today, iTunes does not start automatically anymore when I connect my iPod Touch. If I launch iTunes manually, it recognized the iPod and syncs normally. What might have happened here and how can I fix this? The option in the preferences to automatically sync when an iPod gets connected is activated.
    I have a 1st gen iPod Touch (2.2.1), a Mac Pro (OS X 10.5.6) with iTunes 8.1.
Funnily enough, iTunes starts immediately whenever I connect my old iPod nanos (2nd and 3 rd gen).
Next steps, which I will try, are reinstalling the Apple Mobile Device Service and if that does not help, restoring the iPod touch.
    Any ideas?
    Best,

You unchecked the "Open iTunes when THIS iPod is connected" on the Summary Tab.
