PC to Mac Transfers

I just bought a macbook and am a previous PC user. My PC crashed and nothing was recoverable, including my music. I have it all on my ipod but can I connect to to my macbook or will I have to reformat and lose all my music in the process?
Anyone know of anything?

If you purchased all your content from iTunes, all you need to do is authorize your Macbook with your Apple ID. Once this is done, connect the iPod; you should get a message giving you three options: Erase+Sync=NO, Cancel=No, Transfer Purchases=Yes. This will transfer all your purchases from the iPod, to your iTunes library. If you don't get a window asking for these options, in iTunes, click on File>Transfer Purchases from iPod. Now, if you have multiple accounts, and have content from multiple accounts, you will need to authorize the computer with the next Apple ID and repeat.
As for the re-formating question, an iPod in Windows Format can be read on PC and MAC, a Mac formated iPod can only be read on MACs. Since you were using it with the PC, you're all good.

  • PC to Mac: Transferring music NOT WORKING!!!!!!

hello! perhaps i've been staring at this new wonderful new mac for too long, but i CANNOT seem to transfer my iTunes library from my PC to my new Mac. i followed ALL the instructions from the apple website (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329). on my PC i have 6162 songs and when i transferred my music to my Mac it said something like 5200 (give or take). the way in which i copied the music was by copying the iTunes folder to my iPod (as a hard drive). then i plugged that into my mac and copied it into the "music" folder. i had to try several times to get some of the music to copy to iTunes. finally some did, but all the playlists were gone. the web site said that there was a way to copy everything including playlists. HELP HELP HELP HELP. i do NOT want to have to upload everything all over again from CDs!! thanks!

not sure if my suggestions will help as I've never had to transfer from PC to Mac.
but is there away to check your iPod to make sure your ~6K mp3's from your PC made it to your iPod "disk"?
That's my best guess on where items are getting lost.
Are they all MP3 formatted on your PC? (not sure if iTunes on a PC can play Windows media files or not...).
I've never had this problem so i'm sorry i couldn't help.
A while back (~2002) I ended up getting a external firewire HD for my mp3's as my library outgrew my internal Graphite iMac Hard Drive. It was a breeze when I upgraded from that to my current computer in 2004ish. But i went from Mac to Mac so....

  • Local mac-to-mac transfers goes through the internet connection (very slow)

Transfering files from my iMac to my MacBook Air (or the opposite way) over my local Time Capsule wireless network is extremely slow. I connect to my MacBook Air using my local username account on that machine (which is the same as on the iMac). When I click on the connected MacBook Air again (under shared in Finder’s left column) it says I'm connected as [email protected] (my MobileMe address). Transfers then goes with around 50KB/s which is the same as my outbound capacity on my internet connection. If I disconnect the internet from the Time Capsule I get transfers around 2.2MB/s.
I can’t actually log in as a local user on my other local machine. It goes through the internet no matter how I log in. Back To My Mac is even turned off on both machine.
    How can I fix this?

You actually are close enough to their 3meg down that you can't complain. 2.8meg down and 700kb up is fine, unless it's supposed to be their FIOS that is.
Sounds like it is the site(s) that are slow, like these boards at times.

  • AOL Desktop (PC) to AOL Desktop for Mac - Transferring Saved Emails

I just installed AOL Desktop for Mac and I'm trying to transfer my emails. There's no issue setting up the accounts and accessing my emails Saved on AOL, but I cannot access my emails Saved on my PC. The software doesn't have any feature to transfer these locally saved emails from PC to MAC.
The suggested solution is to forward all my saved emails to myself and save them on AOL. Then they'd be accessible on the mac. But I have thousands of emails so this isn't feasible.
Does anyone know how I might go about transfering my saved emails from AOL Desktop to AOL Desktop for Mac?
    Thank you

    Greetings Papahemi;
I too had the same problem.  Here is the solution.
Go to System Preferences and select General.
Near the bottom of the window, deselect (uncheck) "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps."
Launch AOL Desktop, you'll still see the untitled windows.  No problem.  Now quit AOL and relaunch.  No more untitled windows.
    Hope this helps.

  • New Mac, transferred library, safe to sync ipod?

I transferred my itunes library from old pc to new mac using the migration assistant.  Is it safe to now sync my ipod to the new mac, or will I erase everything?  Old PC has since crashed.  Ipod was previously sync'd to old PC.

It will erase the ipod and replace with the info from the new computer.
If you have copied everything from the old computer to the new one, then everything will be put back.

  • Mac transfers from iTunes - .m4a problems

    Hi
I have a Nokia N96 and use iTunes on a Mac.
The Nokia software transfers all non DRM protected tracks to the phone as .m4a files and stores them in sound files/external/itunes folder/music
I CAN play them by accessing the tracks via file manager but NOT through the Music Player which does not seem to recognise the files.
Can anyone tell me how (and if) Music Player can play the tracks?
    Thanks

and sorry, to answer your question, it just doesn't SEE the files
strange - you used Nokia Multimedia Transfer to get the songs across, right?
if you manually push songs over, perhaps that would introduce more possibility for this problem... so let's make sure we're starting from the same place:
    1. latest version of Nokia Multimedia Transfer (NMT)
    2. phone connected via usb (or bluetooth, which?) in PC Suite mode
    3. iTunes folder containing relevant tracks, linked to NMT
    4. NMT performs the transfer automatically, you don't click and drag any music files anywhere in the process
if you ARE following the above steps exactly (and i think they are the path of least resistance, so you probably are) try an experiment to see if the music player is actually able to play this sort of file at all:
    1. open iTunes
    2. select a song
    3. drag the song to your desktop (copy it there)
    4. on desktop, select the duplicated song
    5. in menu bar, Finder -> Services -> Send File To Bluetooth Device
    6. select your phone in the window that appears, click send
    7. on phone, new 'message' appears in Messaging app
    8. open this new message, the song should play
    9. click the right soft-button (BACK)
    10. you should be prompted, "Save file?"
    11. chose YES - message will appear, "Saved to music player"
    12. goto music player, refresh should not be needed, open Recently Added playlist
    13. see the song there? if yes, you're phone is working (this time) just like my N95. no? there is some underlying problem deeper than the scope of the manner by which you transferred the file (since 2 transfer methods have failed)
    goodluck,
    -bit
    N95-1 ---> N97-NAM ---> N900 ---> E7-00 + N900 (I use them both)
(N95 was pretty good, N97 had potential but utterly failed to deliver, N900 is absurdly good. Those of you wondering, "should I try N900/Maemo/MeeGo"? The answer is a resounding YES)

  • Windows to Mac + transferring ratings

    Hi guys,
i'm currently using my ipod on my Windows PC which is about to pack up (based on the sounds it's making) and so i'm going to purchase a mac (iBook).
I've pretty much got the transfer sorted (backed it all to CD/ DVD should the PC blow up) and will transfer to the mac once I have it. i do have 2 questions though.
    1) What is best - a)format the iPOD on windows (i.e re-set to factory out-the-box settings) AND then install and format it on the mac OR b) just plug it (in it's current music filled state) in the mac during installation and let the mac format it.
At the moment i'm tempted to restore on windows and then install it. It came pre-windows formatted anyway.
    2) Is there anyway I can easily transfer all the ratings across? I really don't want to have to do it manually so any help with this would help me out no end.
thanks for your input guys and I look forward to joining you all in the "mac world"
    Thanks
    Phill

    Thanks Zevoneer!!!
One quick question. before I transfer the itunes folder across, i assume that i have to install the ipod on the mac using the installation CD? Or does OS-X tiger already have ipod software on it? After using the CD supplied with the ipod, I can then proceed using the guide you highlighted.
Also (sorry) once I have succesfully done this and the ipod is working on the mac, is it best to then restore the ipod on the mac in order to format the disk for mac use or can I just leave it as it is (windows formatted).
    thanks for your help.

  • Getting a new Mac, transferring image.

I recently finished school and was thinking of giving my new MacBook Pro (just got it 6 months ago) to my dad and buying the 27" iMac for myself (portability no longer being an issue). I have the 1tb time capsule and have my MacBook backed up on it. I have a ton of music, media, and other files I obviously will want to transfer to my new iMac.
Will I be able to buy my new iMac and transfer that image of my MacBook from the Time Capsule on to it? That way its like my "Mac" just switched shells. Then will I be able to to give my MacBook to my dad and just reinstall the operating system so the MacBook is like new? Are there any issues here with my plan?
I appreciate any and all help.
    Cheers,
    Chris

I think it would be better and faster to (1) put your MacBook into "target disk mode" by holding down the "T" key when you boot it, (2) connect the two computers with a FireWire cable, and (3) let Migration Assistant (invoked by Setup Assistant when you first turn on your new iMac) transfer everything from the MacBook to the iMac.

  • Switching from PC to Mac transferring filies?

Hello I just bought my Mac yesterday at Best Buy and I have a Pro and I was wondering what do you need in order to transfer your PC stuff to your MAC? Can you conntect your computers together and try it from their? I just don't know what to use. I herd from the Mac people that you do not have to buy a hard drive and I read this page http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2518 on how to transfer and I'm like so confused lol!

Click the triangles to the left of both 'Use Migration Assistant' and 'Manually migrating' and pick the option most convenient in your case. Using the Migration Assistant will put the files into a new user account instead of an existing one.

  • Whole workgroup (SMB) dies for Macs but not PCs

    Hello all,
I'm having a very frustrating problem with a mixed Mac (Snow Leopard, all latest updates) and PC (Vista/XP) home network. Normally everything works fine and I can share files and printers between the Macs and PCs (i.e. this is not a simple configuration or permissions issue).
However, when I try to do a large (~500MB or so) file transfer from any Mac to any PC (wired or wireless, doesn't matter), the WHOLE workgroup dies for all Macs on the network. When I say the whole workgroup, I mean all the Macs lose access to any machine in the SMB workgroup (i.e. WORKGROUP or whatever all the machines are set to). Specifically, this is what happens:
    - All SMB shares immediately stop working on all Macs (transfers in progress are cut off)
    - All Macs and all PCs can still access the internet just fine and can still ping each other, so it isn't like the network connections have physically died or the router froze, etc.
    - Using Finder Go > Connect to server, none of the Macs can access any SMB share on the network, either by name (smb://pc-name) or by IP address (smb://1.2.3.4). Doing so results in an immediate "Connection failed" message (i.e. it doesn't time out or stall, it just fails instantly)
    - Windows machines can continue to access all SMB shares (including Mac shares) just fine! Just not vice versa.
Here are some things I've tried so far:
    - Rebooting any/all Macs does NOT clear up the issue. It's as if the whole SMB workgroup is stuck in a "corrupt" state which is not cleared by rebooting the Macs.
    - Switching from wired to wireless or vice versa doesn't help.
    - Turning ALL machines off, waiting a while, then turning all back on again clears the problem, but only until the next large file transfer.
    - Changing the workgroup name on all machines temporarily solves it until the next large file transfer (but this requires rebooting all the PCs which is a huge hassle).
    - Tried clean reinstalling Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on several of the Macs -- no change.
    - Clean reinstalled Vista on several of the PCs -- no change.
    - Changed the internet/WiFi router for a different brand (now using DD-WRT) -- no change.
    - Changed the Ethernet switches to different brands and used new Ethernet cables to each wired machine -- no change.
I'm not a networking guru but I'm a software developer and have been running a mixed Windows/Linux/Mac home network for some time now, so I'm not a novice either. This is one of the more frustrating problems I've ever faced.
If anyone has ANY ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I am not a network guru either, but perhaps if you set the Macs' network ports to jumbo packets, the problem might be fixed. Information on how to do that is available in this web page http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21333?viewlocale=en_US
Also, if that doesn't help, you might need to get or borrow a fluke and start packet tracing some of the network connections. Maybe there is a bad or misconfigured hub or switch in your network fabric. Flukes are expensive though, so an alternative might be to find a packet sniffer for the Mac or Windows and start sniffing packets during one of those problematic file transfers. This might point you to an underlying hardware problem or misconfiguration in how your network is configured.

  • How to get mac to recognize external HD

Hi. I just got my first Mac! I plugged in the external HD into the USB port and nothing is happening. How to I get the mac to see the HD? Thanks!

If you can't connect the Mac and PC up on a network, would it be possible for you to copy the files on your external back on to a PC? Then you could erase the external and set it up so it's recognised by both the PC and the Mac. You could copy everything back on to the external then on to your Mac and you'd be able to use the external for future PC to Mac transfers too.
A bit convoluted I know, maybe someone else has a better suggestion?

  • Uninstalling Photoshop "alias" on Mac

    Hi:
I hope I have the right group. I recently purchased the mac listed below. I was having some problems installing my cs3 photoshop program which has been resolved. However, I created about 5 alias's in the process that have the following error message attached and I am a not sure if I can just trash them. "The alias add or remove Adobe Photoshop 1 could not be opened because the original item could not be founded". I'm not even sure what the alias means in this context.
A little history on this matter is that my old mac's mother board crashed and I had all the information from that mac transfered to this new one.

An alias is like a shortcut. It is just a reference to the original item. You can delete an alias without affecting the original files. In this case, there are no longer any originals and the alias points to nothing.
