PC to MAC video chat ALMOST there

After updating my OS today with a new version just released (14 Feb, 2006) I gave iChat another try.
It works ALMOST flawlessly but one glitch remains. This gotta be easy for an expert.
When I call from the PC using AIM 5.9 I can video chat with no problems. Video, sound, everything there with good quality and speed.
When I call from the MAC it's another story. After attempting to respond for a few seconds, I get the message on the MAC side that says "Failed to start Video Chat because: username did not respond", where "username" is myself!
How can I not respond if I am the one initiating the video chat request??
Since it works fine from the PC to Mac I know that camera, modem, etc are all OK.
Any solution for this problem?
I am running tests with BOTH the PC and the Mac at my home, have a BT Voyager 205 modem with a Belkin wireless router, the Mac is connected to the router by an ethernet cable and the PC is a laptop connected via an Intel internal wireless modem, at 54 Mb/s.
The laptop has no firewalls and is running windows XP service pack 1...
Anxiously awaiting enlightenment

I went to this site before... it says the following about this particular problem:
"Can not initiate video conference with AIM: If you cannot initiate a video conference with an AIM user yet they can initiate one with you look at their buddy name. Does it have a space or an uppercase character? There's the problem. The solution is to update iChat to version 3.1.1 (v429) which comes with the 10.4.4 update. (Click Software Update... in the Apple menu) This latest update specifically allows iChat to initiate a video conference with an AOL Messenger (AIM) for Windows user whose name include spaces or uppercase characters."
But not only i have already upgraded to the latest iChat, Tiger, etc but both usernames are all lowercase with no spaces... so this is NOT the problem.
I am no firewall or modem port expert but find it strange that either one could be the culprit since when initiated by the PC the video DOES work perfectly.

  • QQ International for Mac: Video Chat problem

    Hello Communities,
I downloaded the MAC version for QQ International to talk to a cousin of mine who will be working in China.  He's had it on his Windows system here in the states for sometime with no problems.  I can get the audio part to work, but the video function works sporadically, and it seems only to turn on my camera if I'm the one making the call.  What I've read says there is no video chat function for the Mac version, but that's strange given that my camera does come on in the cases I've mentioned.  I also then opened up Windows using Parallels, downloaded that version of it, and am having a similar problem.  I have since uninstalled the one on my Windows (in parallel) and the Mac one from my Mac.  There is an update for the Mac version of it, but when you click on it, it takes you to the Chinese version of the website, so I didn't proceed further.  Anyone have any experience with this and have a fix to make it work?
    Regards  and Thanks in advance

    HI Bassplayuh,
Since I downloaded the last QQ version on Tencent Website, as soon as I am called or I call for a video chat, my QQ crashes.... Tried to get the older version from the App store, but now it is the same.... Anyone got a solution?
    Thanks in advance.

  • .Mac video chat with AIM

    Hi all.
I'm trying out iChat with a friend of mine, but it isn't working.
We're both on Mac's - I have a .Mac accound and my friend has an AIM account. We both get the video symbol in iChat, and once we click on it, we get a video window. So far so good.
But then it says that it couldn't complete because either one of us didn't respond, thought clicking on accept.
We're in two different companies, both behind firewalls - and both on the new iMac's.
    Any help would be appreciated

Your companies' firewalls may be blocking you.
Some companies do not allow employees to use video chat. First, check with your respective companies' network administrators to see if video chat is allowed.
If your companies have no objection to video chat, your network administrators can verify that their firewalls are configured in accordance with Apple's Using iChat AV with a firewall or NAT router document.
Both ends must be so configured to allow the two of you to connect from your current work locations.

  • Best Mac-to-Mac video chat (AIM or .Mac)

I have a Core Duo Mac mini w/ an iSight. My parents will be getting a Macbook or Macbook Pro.
I currently have a .Mac account. My question is, do my parents need to sign up for a .Mac account and pay $99 just to use iChat video converencing with me?
They have an AIM account already, can they just use that with iChat on their new Mac?
And for Mac-to-Mac video converencing, does it matter?

    Brian
Your parents can either use their existing AIM screen name, as suggested by the first respondent. Or they can take out a trial .mac account and the screen name will still work after the trial expires (but not the other .mac services).

  • Isight used for other video chats

Is it possible for you to use your webcam for other video chatting sights ? I have been trying to video chat online with my friends in college in atl, but its not really recognizing my webcam. I have the Imac with the built in isight. Can anyone help me ?

As Ralph has already posted, iChat is the clear winner for quality and features in Mac to Mac video chat, but there are LOTS of other choices. If you have iChat quesitons, Ralph and his comprehensive iChat FAQs site will help you with the answers.
Other video chat apps are shown in the "Chatting and Conferencing" section of Some Applications You Can Use With iSight
If you are trying to use your OS X Mac to video chat with a PC user who will use nothing but MSN Messenger or Microsoft Messenger, use aMSN or Mercury on your Mac to get video (but no audio) when you text chat with him.
Additionally , there are web based video sites such as Stickam (to use them, configure your "Flash" settings as described in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4761707&#4761707 ), and video conferencing sites like MeBeam (see the "MeBeam ™ Blog" page for instructions.) There are many others.

  • One-way video chat with iSight on Mac to PC via AIM

I recently bought an iSight camera for my powerbook G4. I am having trouble getting a video chat connected to my friend who is using AIM 5.5 on his PC. I am using AIM 4.7 for macintosh. Are there any tips on getting a one way video chat started?? he doesn not have a webcam

    Hello Ivy,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your PC pal should upgrade to the current AIM 5.9. If fixes some of 5.5's problems.
AIM for Mac has no video (or audio) capability). More info in the MSN, Yahoo, Win Messengers & iChat? FAQ.
See Using iSight with iChat AV for info on how to use your iSight for video chat.
Then, see Mac Video Chat with PCs for info on making video connections with PCs.
For more information on one-way video, search your Mac's
    b iChat > Help > iChat Help
for "one-way video" (without the quotation marks).
The requirements for one-way video are the same as for two-way video except for one camera.
One-way video between an iSight-equipped Mac and a correctly configured PC is possible for most users. However, some users report that they can just NEVER get it to work. We do not know why that is. Adding any compatible USB webcam to the PC system (and "tuning" correctly after the addition) should let you make video connections if you are one who cannot make it work without a camera.

  • Video chat & Screensharing unavailable with Jabber account in Messages

    Dear all,
I use Messages to connect to 2 Jabber services: Google Chat and Facebook Chat.
I've read that Messages can deliver Screensharing and Video Chatting services for Jabber account. However I've never seen this option next to friends' name in Buddy Lists (seperate list). And whenever I select a friend's id (in GChat or FChat), there's always one available action possible: start conversation, and the buttons for starting video chat or screensharing (at the bottom of the buddy list window) are always greyed-out.
After much reading on this site I've still not found out the answer. Can someone helps me on this point ?
    Thanks a lot,
    M

    HI,
A Jabber specific App or a Web Browser with the Google Video Chat Plug-in  can do Video chats using the Jingle Protocol that Jabber apps use.
At one time Google seemed to use Flash to do Video chats and there have been reported conflicts with having both Flash and the Google Plug-in active  for your web browser.
    To state this another way.
Jabber apps tend to be a collection of modules.  One of these is the Jingle Library for Video Chats.
Google include this Protocol in their Video Plug-in for web Browsers.
I don't have a Facebook account and cannot tell you if Facebook uses Flash or a similar plug-in for web browsers.
iChat and Messages use a protocol called Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) to make Audio Only, Video and Screen Sharing Connections.
SIP is used with Voice over IP apps (VoIP) such as software phones that can use SIP.
Skype also uses SIP but is not compatible with iChat or Messages
What this means is that iChat/Messages will Video or Audio Only or Screen Share to other Macs using iChat or Messages apps irrespective if they are using Jabber based or AIM based names/IDs
What it will not do is connect to PCs using the standalone App called GoogleTalk or to Web Browser logins (on any Platform) of Jabber apps on any platform.
So a Login to Google Chat via a Login to Google Mail's Web Page or iGoogle with the Video Plug-in is likely to show you your Buddies available for Video chats where as iChat to Messages will not.
As Facebook is also a Jabber server the same things will apply.

  • Using Bonjour for video chat to windows computer

I'm wondering if it is possible to use Bonjour to do video chats accross the network from a mac to windows xp pc. Thanks in advance for any help or answers.

Sure can. You would need to have Bonjour installed on the Windows PC, along with a chat client.
    Here's Bonjour for Windows: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows103.html
Don't forget to adjust the windows firewall settings: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301514
And here is a 3rd party chat client for windows: http://xurble.org/projects/iChatMiranda or you can use Trillian http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/
    I hope this helps!
OOOPs. I just saw that you were asking for video chats, unfortunatly, there is no client that I'm aware of that supports Bonjour Video on the PC...sorry!

  • Switching from screen share to video chat

I'm using iChat ver. 4.0.2 on an iMac. I collaborate with colleagues and we frequently use the screen sharing mode, but I cannot figure out how to change back to video chat direct from the screen sharing mode. If I click on the little video camera at the bottom of the iChat box, nothing happens. If I end the screen sharing, the entire iChat session shuts down. Any advice on switching from screen sharing to video chat mode without hanging up?
    Thanks!

You have to End Screen Sharing and start a New Video chat.
There is no elegant way to do it.
In iChat go to the iChat menu and Feedback option send in a Wish List item. (there is a Free text Box and one of the Drop downs is for Enhancements Requests.)

  • One-way video chat to PC not working.

So, I have an iSight and I tried using it as a one way video chat on iChat with someone on AIM (on a WIndows machine). Problem is, when I try to connect, after they accept it says the video chat didn't start because I, the person who initialized it, didn't respond. Help?

If the PC user has NEITHER a camera NOR a mic, iChat interprets the lack of data from the PC as a failure to connect. To connect with iChat AV, be sure the PC user has at least ONE of these AV devices.
Even with a mic, some PC users cannot make one-way work. Addition of any cheap USB PC webcam cures the problem for those with whom I have tested.

  • Talking to New People on Playbook Video Chat : App Idea

    Hi,
I had this idea to create an app that can help you discover people with similar interests and connect to them via Playbook video chat.
There will be no registration necessary. The application will manage discovery of people. This would be great for meeting new friends, business contacts or just someone to video of voice chat.
    Your thoughts?

That could be good, I look forward to seeing it

  • Audio problems with video chat between Mac & PC

    Hello,
My parents and I both recently purchased web cams to use for video chats. I am on a Mac, using an iSight through iChat, while they have a PC and are using a Logitech Quickcam 5000 through AOL IM version 5.9. I have successfully video chatted with other mac/isight users. Almost everything works fine chatting with my parents - the video works, and they can hear me. I however, am unable to hear them. I thought this might be a problem on their end, but when they open a video chat with me, an error message pops up saying that I "do not support the talk feature, or am not accepting talk invitations." They have been able to get the audio to work when doing so between two PCs using AOL IM. Is there anything I can do on my end that will let their audio come through to me?
    1.6 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Raoul,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
If you mean you are trying to do Audio only chats with a PC which is using AIM 5.9 or 5.5 then it will not work.
The AIM application has never been able to do Audio Only chats to iChat
One end needs to have a camera (preferably the Mac end).
The PC end stilll needs to do the "Tuning" after getting to the Porperties.
They may also need to enable the application through the XP firewall.
And it goes without saying they have to be on XP.
