PC to Mac Webcam?

Hi,
Our friends are moving to Australia from the Uk and we would like to keep in touch via webcams.
The thing is, i have an iMac with a built in web cam and they have a PC with a plug in webcam.
I know nothing at all about web cams or how to use them. My question is: what is the best way to set this up and what do i need to do?
Thanks

Thomas is right in the incompatibilities you face here, although there are some ways round it. There are two messenger applications that may assist. First, the Open Source aMSN (Alvaro's Messenger) which I find a little clunky and not too easy to use. Another way round would be Adium, which is favoured by a lot of Mac users over MSN. This has a number of plugins, including a MeBeam plugin that will allow video, although this is via a webpage that both parties access.
In addition, try the iChat forums as there are some knowledgeable people in there and there are ways to get iChat and MSN to work together -- not easy, but this can be done.

  • TA25603 Audio and visual out of sync iMovie using built in mac webcam?

On the latest imovie - april 2013, I have made many videos and had no problems, but recently I've been using the macs inbuilt webcam and a couple of times when I re-watch the footage the audio is badly out of sync with the visual, how can I fix this?

Same issue I've seen. I have a Sony DCR-TRV30. Had 40 tapes to transfer to iMovie 10.0.6. Had no issue on first 16 tapes then all the sudden I experienced the audio/video timing issue. Video looks good when it is getting imported, audio/video in sync on camera and in preview window on iMovie while importing. Tape finishes and you start to watch import when beginning of tape is in sync and by end it is several seconds out of sync. Tried deleting and installing iMovie again and that didn't help.

I recently purchesed a MacBook with the built in isight Camera. I have tried to use the webcam options with AIM, Yahoo, and MSN. None of them work! I have the newst versions of all 3 messengers and none of my friends on PC's can see my webcam, not even on AIM through iChat. What is the problem? is the iSight cam only usable with iChat?

  • Suggestion for a compatible hd logitech webcam or any other for mac pro..

Please suggest me a hd webcam for my mac pro, as i want to use it for facetime video conferencing and many other things.. please help me!!!!

    (1) You have a choice of many Mac-compatible USB cam.  Some examples of current compatible cams are described at  http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/.
    (2) If you want a wireless cam, consider http://ecamm.com/mac/webcam/bt1/
    (3) OS X already has everything it needs for Mac-compatible cams.  I recommend that you not add any OS X software that comes with your chosen camera to your OS X Mac, at least until you have tested your new cam without adding anything.
As OS X user Kurt Weber, who is using the Logitech C615 explains in this recent topic, the Logitech software is required in order to provide its HD images.  However. as user Dave Stowe reports in the same thread, the added third-party software can contribute unexpected effects on some systems.  Such possible interaction is the reason I do not recommend adding third-party software unless the image is not acceptable without it.
This added software caution applies only to Mac OS X.  For use with Windows® on a Mac, feel free to install any compatible Windows® software your external camera may need.

  • HD webcam for the Mac

Does anybody have suggestions for a HD webcam for the latest Mac Mini that will actually perform HD video calling (720p) in all applications that support HD video calling (like Skype, Facetime HD, Bria, VidyoDesktop). Please don't post a recommendation for a camera that doesn't support HD in more than the applications that come with the camera.
For instance, I have a Logitech C910 camera that supports HD, but ONLY in the installed Logitech Webcam Software (Logitech VID HD). HD does not work in any other application. I think that to fully support HD calling on the Mac, a camera needs to install it's own driver, and not use the UVC driver that is used by default by most Mac webcams.

Well according to Skype's website, only Skype for Windows supports 720p HD video calling. So no webcam on Mac, be it HD or not will support Skype HD video calling on Mac until Skype supports it on the Mac.
    Culled from Skype.com: http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/features/allfeatures/video-call/
*The latest version of Skype offers the clearest, crispest, sharpest quality video calling, and High Definition capability. If everyone on the call has an HD quality webcam, you can see the video in High Definition.*
    *What you’ll need:*
** _The latest version of Skype for Windows_*
    ** An HD quality webcam*
*A dual core processor, and a fast internet connection of 512 kbit/s or more is required.*

Webcam - Mac mini - HDTV
I want to know if I could set up ichat to be displayed on my TV. The webcam would be near or no top of my HDTV, and I would be able to call up friends via Ichat and see the full screen on the TV, so I could sit on my sofa and chat away to family/ friends etc....
Does anyone know if this is possible?

  • Msn with webcam for mac?

as you probably know, microsoft msn will not allow my mac webcam to work on it.
Are there any programs that I can use online or download that will let me talk to my msn contacts and be able to use my webcam?
I've used amsn, but it was extremely slow on my computer.
I have also tried skype, but I could only have contacts who were a part of skype, so it was no use.

  • Webcam Pod not working on Macs

I use the standard webcam pod that comes with the SDK. My users (Mac users also) have been using it without incident until recently.
I have not updated my software since Nov 16, and it was working for users on that day. Users resumed testing the site today and yesterday, and Mac users cannot use their webcam with my service. On Chrome and Firefox, they don't even get the Flash pop up asking them to allow usage. On Safari, they do, but nothing happens when the click "Allow". Three separate Mac users have reported this to me all using 10,1,102,64 of Flash, and I'm affraid no Mac webcams are working. Have you heard of any other incidents since Nov 16?

    Hi,
Are you using Player 10.2 ? In that case, can you try removing this line from your WebcamPublisher source
                             var l:int = Camera.names.length;
                             for (var i:int=0; i<l; i++) {
                                  if (Camera.names[i]==ISIGHT_NAME) {
                                       _cameraNameIndex = i+"";
                                       break;
This hardcoded line was added earlier due to a player bug in MAC( as eric mentioned). You can remove this line and check it out linking to the source and let us know.
    Thanks

  • How can I use two webcams simultaneously?

    Hi,
I want to hook up two external webcams to a Macbook or an iMac and be able to display a live view of both camera images at the same time.
It doesn't matter if the live view is a single app showing both cameras or two separate windows, as long as both images can be viewed simultaneously on the desktop.
Can anyone recommend the hardware (webcams) and software I would need to accomplish this?
    Thanks.

  • Webcam for iMac

    Hello,
I'd like to buy an external webcan to use with Skype on my 3 year old iMac.
iSight seems to have been withdrawn ?
Is there a new Mac webcam out anytime soon ?
Or can somebody please recommend a good one for about £70.
    Thank you.
    Ken in UK.

    Hello Ken,
I do not use Skype, but Skype Help offers comprehensive support to answer your Skype questions if you do not get the answer you need here.
If you have a Mac compatible Firewire equipped DV camcorder, you can use it.
If you want a USB cam, although other USB cams will likely work, Skype offers several for use with their app linked at this page. All of them cost less than £70.
As explained on this Skype Help page,
Most PC-compatible webcams should work with Skype, however some older models may not work. You should ensure that you always have the latest drivers for your hardware to ensure that the camera will work.
Moreover, Skype's minimum system requirements for Mac show you must be using Mac OS X v10.3.9 Panther or later. Your posted System Info shows Mac OS X (10.3.x), so you need to update to use Skype if your system is currently at 10.3.8 or older.
Additionally, at 10.3.9, you will need iChatUSBCam and additional driver software. Consider the "Known Working Configurations" section of the iChatISBCam camera guide for recommendations unless the seller gives you specific instructions to make his camera work on your system.
From my look, at least two cams appear in both Skype and iChatUSBCam's lists of compatible webcams:
    Logitech QuickCam Chat
    Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks
Both of them require iChatUSBCam and the macam driver to work with your Panther (10.3.9) equipped Mac. With 10.3.9, iChatUSBCam, and macam driver software, either should work for you.

  • How can i use a second external webcam on my MacBook Air 11

How can I use a second external webcam with my MacBook Air 11" 2011?
    Are there specific compatible webcams?
Can both cams be use at same time?
How would I choose which cam would be the active one, for example with FaceTime or Skype?
    Thanks for any tips.

paolo@spring wrote: How can I use a second external webcam with my MacBook Air 11" 2011?...
Plug it in and launch the app you will use to run it.
paolo@spring wrote: ...Are there specific compatible webcams?...
Yes.  In general, any current USB model (will meet the "UVC" standard) can work on any Mac running Mac OS X 10.4.8 or newer.
    More specifically:
    (1) You have a choice of many Mac-compatible USB cam.  Some examples of current compatible cams are described at  http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/.
    (2) If you want a wireless cam, consider http://ecamm.com/mac/webcam/bt1/
    (3) OS X already has everything it needs for Mac-compatible cams.  I recommend that you not add any OS X software that comes with your chosen camera to your OS X Mac, at least until you have tested your new cam without adding anything.
paolo@spring wrote:... Can both cams be use at same time?...
Multiple cameras can be connected at one time, but asking your Mac to actually use (capture and process) more than one video stream at a time might cause processor and data bus capacity problems.  The normal method is to connect your cameras and switch between them as needed, actually using only one at a time.
paolo@spring wrote:... How would I choose which cam would be the active one, for example with FaceTime or Skype?...
The software you use to operate the cameras controls that.  For more info, start with the answer in this topic link.

  • DVD burner & webcam for eMac

    Hi
I had a Lacie DVD drive for 18 months & it has just stopped working. Have tried another cable & another computer & no luck. So I have to get a new one as they don't repair them. I don't want to get another Lacie after this experience, so am looking for recommendations. We are looking at Sony at the moment.
I also want to get a webcam. Are there other options besides iSight? It seems like most on the market aren't compatible with a Mac.
Is there any difference between using a firewire vs USB for these devices?
Any help much appreciated as this is pretty new to me. Thanks

If you don't have a USB 2.0 eMac an External iSight camera would definitely be the best as it will probably have the best compatibility. They do sell for quite a lot on eBay though. You can often use firewire DV camera as webcams too etc..
It may be hard to find a USB 1.1 compatible Mac webcam . There are a bunch of webcams that will work well on USB 2 ports though, The Xbox Live Vision is a good and cheap option.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XboxLive_Vision#PCcompatibility (Provided you are using OS X 10.4.9 or later which by the looks of your signature you are),
Also suits the style of an eMac :P.
    Good Luck!
