PC user with obvious (or not) questions about iChat AV

Hi, I apologize in advance if this had been discussed or is blantantly obvious to old and new mac users, but I couldn't find it in the forums.
I'm going to buy a new macbook in the next few months, but I was wondering if iChat cost anything to get some of the more advanced features (for example, audio and video chatting). Thanks!

HI electic_beauty,
Nope. iChat is free with the rest of the OS.
AIM screen names are free as are @mac ones if you go for a trial account which will work in iChat after the 60days is up.

  • Network Users with network homes not really working for me

    I have with great pain setup a OS X Lion server on a Mac Mini that was supposed to be my central server to have 4 network users accounts and all the users data is stored on an external disk array with mounted network homes to the 2 iMacs and 2 Macbooks I have in my home.
    I have gotten it all working and all my Macs are joined to the Open Directory and each User can login as a network users on any of the Macs and get their files via mounted home directory from the server. The home directories on the server are backed up with Time Machine.
    I have found the following items that do not work proberly:
    1) Desktop backgrounds settings are just lost sometimes for whatever reason. Desktop background goes to default and you need to manually set back to the one you have selected. This happen mostly if users have their own desktop pictures.
    2) Keychain get's screwed up. The user often get the "Keychain doesn't exist to store ..." message and need to select to reset the keychain. Anything I have tried from "Keychain First Aid" to removing and have a new one created doesn't fix the problem. It keeps on coming back.
    3) iTunes Storage and AppStore are getting confused about authorized computers. This is because a user logs in from another computer and then iTunes store would tell the user this computer hasn't been authorized to play the purchase music. Same happens with iPhone apps from the AppStore. Apparently those two stores are not setup to hanlde network users proberly.
    4) Permission issues happen sometimes in Application like iPhoto where it would complain not being able to see photos or cannot add new photos to the library. Need to run a permission repair on the Iphoto Library to fix this.
    5) One critical one is that it's not really possible to restore files from Time Machine. The Time Machine backup is done on the server by an administrator account directly backing up the user directories. When you go into Time Machine on the server even the admin can drill down into the user directories so no restore possible. The individual users have no idea that there was ever a Time Machine backup done as Time Machine is not setup in their accounts on the individual Macs. This prevents any possible restore.
    I reckon that many of the problems are related to having only one location for ~/Library as the individual Macs are writing their user related settings into this directory in a central location. So what happens is when something on iMac 1 and then I log in on iMac 2 that might not exactly match this Macs config and it get's confused throwing one of the above erors.
    Trouble is witth central network home directory the way they mounted i can't exclude the ~/Library folder. The only option I can see is mobile account because I have seen in the preferences that when they sync the handle Library items differently.
    Does anybody have any experience out there with this sort of thing and can advise what's the best way forward?
    If i can't resolve this I'll go back to have network users with local home directories on each Mac and just setup for each user a network share to which they copy files if they want them available on other Macs. Not as nice but at least it works!
    As a said note I did this to make things easier but it has up to now cost me trouble then i had before!

    Haven't heard anything from anybody so probably to daunting a topic ...
    I have now moved on to try Portable Home Directories (PHD) and syncing ... what a disaster!
    First it took  me ages to get this right as the way the home directores are mounted on the clients from the server it's just weired which has to do with how AFP mounts are implemented. Since one AFP mount can't be mounted by several users on the same system they use a workaround of mounting it to a temp directory and then linking it back to where it should be. Of course this causes major problems.
    Okay it kind of worked so let's move on to syncing PHD. First of all on initial creation it only sync a small portion of the directory that should be okay but on some of my accounts it never went passed this stage. It said it's all synced but it only had synced the first 10% or so of the data. I wasn't able to make it sync anymore.
    On other accounts it correctly synced all the data down, or so I thought. Apparently a few sync session back and forth and 50-60% of the data was gone. On further investigation it turned out to be iTunes and iPhoto libraries. Turns out does don't sync probably via Home Sync!!!
    Apple product is not able to probably syncing Apple specific library files!!!!
    So here my warning to everybody: DO NOT USE PHD and HOME SYNC to sync your data as you will lose stuff if you have iTunes and/or iPhoto libraries with Lion OS X Server!!!
    The whole Lion Server experience has been a disaster for me. Now I have a server that does file sharing and time machine backup sharing. I can do the same thing with a standard Mac using those services. What's the point of Lion Sever for Home if nothing works proberly?

  • Sharing IPhoto among multiple users on ONE computer. Question about article

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304890
    Does anyone have an idea why the article doesn't mention using users/shared instead of creating a separate partition. It seems much easier, though from some of the other posts it looks like Permissions on users/shared may not work properly.
    This seems awfully complicated for the machine that advertises itself as easy to use. It was much easier to share files on Windows.

    I have followed the famous Apple article and have created a disk image with permissions ignored and the iphoto library in it. But in order to have the other user access the disk image, I have put it in the users/shared folder. As a result, when trying to access the library from the other user account, it says that I do not have enough rights to access the library. Any thoughts ?
    Thank you.

  • WRT160N v2 - problems with WPA2 and some questions about N

    Hi guys
    WRT160N V2 (F/W 2.0.03)
    So I've been operating on Wireless G with WEP for a good while because of the problems I had in the past. The other day I decided to try again with the "N" and the WPA2... and spent 4 hours going around in circles; now I'm on B/G Mixed/WPA-PSK.
    When I tried to use "N", (by enabling "Mixed" with everything else set to "Auto") even my HTC Sensation would only pick up a "G" connection... and all my laptops (which are not "N" capable) would not connect at all. So I ditched that and looked at the encryption and authentication.
    When I enabled "WPA2" "AES/TKIP", my machines and phones would either not connect at all, failed to get an IP address, or connected fine with an IP address but routing wasn't working... and these symptoms seemingly occurred randomly - no direct device correlation and one device might show all the symptoms at different times.
    I dropped down to WPA, and (touch wood) everything seems to be working at the moment... but I don't trust it. Can you tell me what I need to do to get this working on N and WPA2? Have I missed a firmware update?
    p.s. Is this model 2.4GHz or 5GHz please?
    Cheers

    That's 2.4.. G network would only work in this case since you don't have N cards on your computers
    Check out this article so you know what security you can set on your computers, some devices are not WPA capable so you might want to think about that too.

    I have 3 users in my office that are not able to download and install programs due to a security prompt that says that they are unable to install the program due to not having administrator rights. But in the users menu the user accounts are setup with
    full administrator rights. Is this a common problem?

    Hi,
    Are they domain administrator or local administrator? Is there any group policy restriction?

  • First Time Mac User with Boot Camp Partioning Question

    Hello Mac Community. I am a long time windows user. I just purchased my first Mac product: A 15" MacBook Pro and and excited to get started. I plan to install Bootcamp and run OS X and Win XP. I will need to be able to share files with Programs in Both OS X and XP. After researching I am confused as to whether the best option is to:
    1) create 3 partitions for example 1)50GB OSX, 2)50GB Win XP & 3) 155GB shared Project and Documents Drive
    or
    2) Split Drive in half and have 2 Partitions 1 With each operating system and 90-100gb of free space on it.
    *Important Info About My Usage*
    I plan to use my MBPro primarily for media applications (video / audio production) so it is very important to me to be able to in windows for example render a quick time movie in After Effects then save it to HDD Boot Up in OS X and use that file in Final Cut. Also with windows to prevent disk fragmentation I have XP on a smaller OS drive and all my video work is done on a large project Drive.
    For this reason I would assume option 1 would be my best best? Is this correct?

    Steve, you don't have to run Migration Assistant right away. You can set it up as if you weren't going to migrate anything. You can start using your Mac right away.
    Later, you can run Migration Assistant any time you want.
    Depending on when you cancel MA, it is probable that whatever it did up to that point will be lost. 36 hours is unreasonable.
    After you start using your Mac and are comfortable that it works to your satisfaction, connect the two with an Ethernet cable. Make sure it's a Category 5e or Category 6 patch cable (most are today). Then run MA. That ought to work and nothing will be faster.
    For what it's worth I never got MA to function properly upon initial setup. It ought to work in theory but mine would get stuck at about the 99% point. Running it after initial setup has always been more reliable. I don't know why.

  • I have a Samsung Galaxy Stellar 4 GB first time user. I have a question about ringtones.

    My basic smart phone before the Samsung was a LG touch cell. What I liked best about that phone was the ringtone. It would call out (voice) the name of the person calling or sending a text. I can't find this feature on the Samsung. Does anyone know if this cell has the capabilites of a verbal announcement ringtone for names on my contact list? Since it doesn't appear to be on the selection list for ringtones, is there an app I can download to add it to my Samsung for incoming texts or phone calls? I'm starting to like this new cell but I miss the verbal ringtone announcement.

    To my knowledge, there's nothing built in on the phone itself, though I could be wrong. On my DROID RAZR M there is a way you can have the phone announce calls and text messages, so it's possible to do. I would look in the Google Play store to see if there's a free app that can do this for you, or see if you can find in the phone "app" some settings for announcing callers

  • Few Questions About iChat...

    It's a really big change to go from AIM to iChat. It's a lot prettier/easier to use but there are some features I miss.
    How do I add capitalization/spaces in my screenname? Other people's screennames will show capitalization/spaces, so I know it recognizes it, I just want to know how I can do it to my name.
    Also, is there any way to see how long other people have been online? In regular AIM, it could tell you, but I haven't figured that out for iChat yet.
    Thanks.

    Hi Wantedtobeyour,
    Changing or at least stating your Display name is part of the AIM screen name set up
    iChat only tells you how long someone has been Idle. There might be an AppleScript tweak out there but I do not have a direct answer if it can be done.

  • Question about "synchronized" and "wait"

    Hello, everyone!
    I have seen a piece of code like this,
    synchronized (lock)
    //do operation 1
    lock.wait();
    //do operation 2
    I think in the above piece of code, when a thead finished operation 1, it will release the lock and let other threads waiting for the lock have chance to run the same block of code. Am I correct?
    If I am correct, I have a further question, a "synchronized" block means a set of operations that can not be interrupted, but when invoke "wait" method, the thread running in the "synchronized" block will be terminated (interrupted) by release the lock and other threads will have chance to enter the "synchronized" block. In short, the execution inside the "synchronized" block will be interrupted. So, I wonder whether the above piece of code is correct and conforms to the principle of "synchronized". And what is its real use?
    Thanks in advance,
    George

    Thanks, pkwooster buddy!You're welcome
    I just wondered whether "wait inside a synchronized
    block" technology is thread safe. Please look at the
    following example,wait and synchronized are thread safe.
    public class Foo {
    int mVal= 0;
    public final Object mLock = ...;
    public void doIt() {
    synchronized(mLock) {
    mVal = ...;
    mLock.wait();
    if (mVal == ...) {
    // do something
    } else {
    // do something else
    }If we have two threads, T1 and T2, enter the block in
    their respective order, and T1 is woken up first, T2
    may have tampered with T1's execution path because T2
    changed mVal while T1 was asleep. So T2 manipulate
    instance field mVal is a side-effect.when you do the wait() you give up the lock and the other threads get a chance to run. When you exit the wait() you get the new value of the myVal variable which may have been changed. This is exactly what you want. To make that not thread save you could do
    int temp = myVal;
    wait();
    if(temp == ...)in this case the variable temp contains the old vale of myVal.
    >
    I think the most safest way is never wait inside a
    synchronized block, but it is less efficient. What do
    you think about the trick of wait inside a
    synchronized block? I think you are very experienced
    in thread field from your kind reply.
    Thanks in advance,
    Georgewait(), notify() and notifyAll() are very useful. You need them when you want threads to cooperate in an predictable manner. I recommend that you review the section on consumer and producer classes and wait and notify in the Threads Tutorial. It gives good examples. For a practical example of this you could also take a look at my Multithreaded Server Example. It implements a simple chat server that switches String messages. Look especially at the send(), doSend() and popMessage() methods in the StreamConnection class. These allow the receive thread of one user to send messages out using the send thread of another user. If you have questions about that example, please post the questions on that topic.
    Hope this helps.

  • Question about mac mini applecare

    i'm getting a new mac mini soon, and hesitating if i need to buy applecare with it. got several questions about the applecare for mac mini:
    1.if i upgrade the hard drive of mac mini, which will void the warranty of applecare, will the apple display & wireless keyboard & mouse that i purchase along with mac mini still be under applecare warranty?
    2.if i sell the mac mini after one year, will the apple display,keyboard,mouse still under the protection of applecare?
    3.i already have a wireless mighty mouse (within one year of purchase) before purchasing mac mini, may i add it to the applecare?
    4.if i purchase iSight with mac mini, will be it under the protection of applecare as well?
    appreciate any help!!

    I'll try to help:
    1. Are you a certified Apple Authorized Service Provider? If you are not and you damage anything, the repair will not be covered by the original warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan. I would be up to the service technician doing a repair in the future to tell you if the entire warranty was voided by your actions or not. Since we're all users and none of us work for Apple, we cannot speak for Apple. I would suspect, however I can't be certain, Apple would still give you service for the peripherals since they were not involved in the original incident.
    2. The warranty for the peripherals will travel with the computer. If you no longer own the computer, you will not be able to get service for those parts. If you sell your Mac mini, you have two options: Transfer the AppleCare Protection Plan to the new owner or get a refund for the amount of time you have not used. I would suggest you sell the peripherals with the Mac mini and the AppleCare Protection Plan. This would be a valuable add-on to your sale. Or you can keep the peripherals to use with your next Mac and they'll be covered by your new AppleCare Protection Plan.
    3. You do not need to "enroll" all your peripherals. As long as you own the computer with the AppleCare Protection Plan, you will get support for the peripherals you're using. For example, Apple gave me support for the AirPort Express that I bought before my Mac mini with a plan. As long as it's a mouse, keyboard or AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme, they're covered no matter when you purchased them. However, for a display to be covered, you must purchase the display at the same time or purchase a separate AppleCare Protection Plan for the display.
    4. The AppleCare Protection Plan FAQ (link is a PDF) does not specify that an iSight is a covered peripheral.

  • Questions about Nvidia Optimus

    Hello guys,
    I've planned to buy a new laptop and I'm hesitating between the Toshiba R830-118 ( i5-2410M, Intel HD 3000 ) and the Asus U36SD ( i5-2410M, GeForce GT520M 1GB GDDR3 with Optimus ).
    My question about Optimus would be : is it possible to fully disable the discrete card to be sure that only the intel hd is used, in order to save the battery, which is a big thing for me ? Because I assume that on the Asus, the integrated card must be an Intel HD 3000, and so I would prefer to buy the Asus and only use the integrated card.
    Also, if there is any user of Bumblebee around there, as far as I've understood, I would need to use the proprietary drivers from nvidia ? Is your battery time still ok with this solution ?
    Please excuse my poor English!
    Thanks,

    remeh wrote:If I disable the discrete card, will I be able to use the HDMI output ?
    From what I know HDMI tends to be wired to the nvidia card on these machines. So I guess the answer is "no". No idea if HDMI works at all. Check http://linux-hybrid-graphics.blogspot.com/ maybe you'll find relevant info there.
    If I were you, I'd get an Asus machine where you can turn Optimus off and switch between graphic cards. It's not only Asus that makes such machines, but with other manufacturers it's rare that they have this, while Asus has many such machines. Check that link, you'll find somewhere a list of such laptops.
    A fun fact - when I was at the media store last week, only the Asus machine didn't have an Optimus sticker on it, despite also having nvidia graphics. It was a cool machine too (i5 Sandy Bridge processor, Geforce 540M I think), and cheap.

  • Questions about iWork06

    Am I holding my mouth wrong? Is it some king of internet or discussion group bad breath? I've posted a pretty basic question (twice) in the last week regarding iWork06 and compatability with iWorks05, plus a question about iWorks06's compatability with EndNote. If nobody has an answer, I understand.
    But I'm wondering if I can't get answers here, where can I? I guess I could call the Apple online store. But Mac users are usually such a helpful group.
    I notice folks freely get on this discusion to both complain about iWork and Apple's upgrade practices but also to praise and promote them, not exactly what you would expect from a "support" discussion group.

    Sometimes people just don't want to respond, because the questions are really redundant (no offence)
    I'm thinking of purchasing iWork06. I frquently share documents and presentations between my iMac, iBook and Windows PC at work. I only want to buy the single user iWork and put it on my mac Mini.
    Great. good idea.
    If I upgrade to iWork06 on my mini, will I have a lot of compatability problems when transfering Pages docs and Keynote presentations to my iMac or iBook where I have iWork05?
    Why not upgradde all machines. you get a single user license, not a single machine license.
    Also, did I understand correctly from an earlier post, that Pages 2 supports EndNote?
    I haven't noticed, but try doing a search in the Pages forum.
    I notice folks freely get on this discusion to both complain about iWork and Apple's upgrade practices but also to praise and promote them, not exactly what you would expect from a "support" discussion group.
    You get people who want a soapbox to vent their frsustrations, and you get people who are a king honest questions and you get people who are doing their best to help others.
    You have to remember those three groups and not lump everyone together.

  • Msi Lightning 770 - question about boost

    Hey. On my new Lightning i had 1228max boost. When most peoples had 1254mhz or 1241mhz.. Its ok or not?
    Will be any difference in fps on games like COD GHOSTS or BF4 between my 1228mhz vs 1241 vs 1254mhz ?

    Enough of this. Obviously you have yourself the 5th GTX770 Lightning by now after rma over rma for nothing. You have been told about Boost 2.0 multiple times now. No one's here to waste his time with your always repeating questions about issues that are no issues.
    As you have been told already default boost clockrate is 1202Mhz. Everything above is a matter of the individual sample and luck. As you wasted nicely clocking samples your current sample is at a lower but still perfectly fine clockrate of 1228Mhz. Be happy with that or - like it has been suggested a couple of times before - finally stay away from computer stuff.

  • Question about QoS in Wireless

    Hi,
    I've spent some time reading about QoS in Wireless but can't get my head around a few things. QoS is a confusing subject.
    In the WLANs -> Edit WLAN you can set a QoS profile, from Bronze to Platinum, as shown in the picture.
    1) Does this level tag ALL traffic on the WLAN to Platinum if the client does not tag the traffic itself to other values? In other words, is Platinum the default level?
    2) I've read that this setting is the maximum level of QoS permitted on the WLAN, in that case I should set it to Platinum if I have VOIP traffic and regular DATA traffic on the same WLAN? For instance Lync/Skype?
    3) How does this relate to AVC profiles? I've prioritized certain apps (lync gets DSCP 46) and down-prioritized others (youtube gets DSCP 10), will the values I've defined be tagged with Platinum since I set the WLAN QoS profile to Platinum? Or will they retain their original value as I defined in AVC Profiles.
    4) Which clients are not WMM compatible? It seems almost all regular computers support WMM.
    Can someone confirm the following QoS is true for the wired infrastructure: WLC ports are mls qos trust cos and AP ports are mls qos trust dscp. But what about trunks between switches and the uplink to your ISP? trust dscp?
    Will be thankful if someone can shed some light on this.

    NO

    Yes, this is max level allowed. you should tag to platinum if you have VOIP clients. i dont think skype sends data with priority voice. not sure about lync.

    wlan setting takes precedence over AVC if i recall correctly
    4) Which clients are not WMM compatible? It seems almost all regular computers support WMM.
    yes all modern clients are WMM compatible. you need WMM compatibility for 11n/ 11ac rates
    Can someone confirm the following QoS is true for the wired infrastructure: WLC ports are mls qos trust cos and AP ports are mls qos trust dscp. But what about trunks between switches and the uplink to your ISP? trust dscp?
    trunks are usually trust cos and access ports are usually trust dscp. you need to make sure end to end qos is configured properly.
