PC vs Mac dl speeds on Linksys

Hi
My provider recently upgraded to provide download speeds up to 16Mbps. I have a Linksys G Router (WRT54G) serving three PC and two macs. I am seeing throughput on the PCs averaging around >8Mbps and occasionally in excess of 12Mbps; however, my Mac G5 Dual 2.5, never gets above 5Mbps, and my G4 TiBook hovers around 3.5Mbps. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
John

So if I format my 5G ipod for my office PC, Can I take my ipod home and add music and video files from my itunes on my imac at home?
Yes. Here's how:

I have seen you in quite a few of these discussions, and most of the time you don't answer the question that was asked
You're more than welcome to review the 2000+ posts I have made over the last 2 years. You probably should if you are going to suggest that MOST of my posts are wasted space.
Feel free to ignore my posts in the future if you don't like the way I deliver my responses, or the the content of my contributions. I have no desire to start or participate in a flame war with anyone.
All you usually offer is some diatribe about how everyone else is wrong and how they shouldn't complain
I won't argue with you there. Feel free to consider me arrogant, but most of the time I am correct. As for complaining... yeah, I do think people shouldn't do it. It's pointless and gets no results. Complaining on a public forum is juvenile to me. In fact, it violates the Terms of Use for these forums to come here and complain, but that's another issue altogether.
but if you're gonna pick apart my last post to try and start an argument, please move on to another discussion.
I was merely clarifying your response. My apologies if the tone of my response suggested otherwise. It was not my intention to "pick you apart".
Have a pleasant day.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you also have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • How to connect my Mac Book Pro to Linksys WRT160N router

    HI,
I just bought a   Linksys WRT160N router. I pop the installation disk in my mac book pro and walk thru the installation procedure successfully.
But I can't connect wirelessly from my MacBook Pro (running mac os x 10.5).
It sees the router and I did type in the password correctly (i copy from the text file generated by the installation procedure), but I keep getting 'coonnection timeout'.
Anyone has similar problem and know how to fix it?
    Thank you.

I experienced this behavior today.  My client had a WRT160N version 3 running on firmware 3.0.02.  I upgraded it to the current version, 3.0.03, because checking for upgrades is part of the service I provide to my clients.  After that point, I could not connect wirelessly -- I got the "connection timeout" message every time I provided the password.  Reviewing the firmware release notes, I saw a mention of "Fixed wireless channel 11 being unstable."  My client was operating on channel 11.  When I moved the router to channel 1, bingo -- the wireless connected perfectly.  And no, no one in the vicinity was running another network on 11 -- there was only one other, and he was on 6, which is non-overlapping.
The best part was when I called Cisco for help and got told there would be a charge for assistance to solve the problem their own firmware obviously caused, that (unlike every other manufacturer in the business) they don't recommend people upgrading their firmware unless something is clearly broken (where is that on the website or in the upgrade instructions, please?), and that they don't keep copies of the older firmware.

  • How can I upgrade my 21 inch mac to speed it up

I have had a 21 inch mac from new for approx 3 years & am now finding that the unit is slowing down considerably. The screen is still perfect & everything else works well. We have recently been in contact with Apple regarding a way to defrag the unit & the unit has been cleared of all videos & most photos.
Is there any way I can pay for more memory to be added or a faster processor? Anyone's help would be appreciated.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Increasing the Upload and if possible download speed of Linksys X3000

Hi I'd like some assitance in increasing my download an dupload speeds of my Linksys X3000.
Mian reason I want to increase them for include:
1- TwitchTV hardly ever loads properly for me, what methods can I go about to make it stream normally?
    2- Here's my SpeedTest results:
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/2820023231.png
I'd like to increase my upload speed as I never manage to get a good connection with friends from the mid east and in europe and USA when I play on my PS3. As is, my upload speed based on the PS3's Network Test is between 0.5-0.7 MBPS but never goes higher than that.
What options should I alter in 192.168.1.1 to get the desired results?

Port forwarding or on turning on DMZ would help if your issue is regarding unable to connect to server and the like. If your concern is regarding slow download and upload speed, then you need to ask your internet server provider if how much speed they are giving you. In the event that the problem is with the router then you can try the following:
    Upgrade the router’s firmware
    Reset the router
Check this link: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=fbf8e8564632422eaa8ea80bf9dcba64_386.xml&pid=80&re... to know on how to  change the router’s mtu size
Enable QoS and prioritize your PS3 for faster connection

  • Mac mini AirPort and Linksys

I have a Mac mini with an AirPort Extreme Card built in. I got a Linksys Router because I am having Cable Internet installed next weekend. The cable modem will have to connect to my brother's PC because he doesn't have a wireless internect card. Anyways, I got a Linksys Router and I was wondering if it is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.6 and AirPort. I also, if it isn't too much to ask, how to connect it because I am a newbie at this... Thank you so much for your time and taking the time to read this.
    Mario

OK… the first thing you're going to have to do is set up your modem/router. Once you have done that I suggest you use your brother's PC to set up the wireless network (following the instructions supplied by LinkSys).
Once you have set up the wireless network on the modem/router and you are armed with the SSID (wireless network name), encryption method (I would suggest WPA/WPA2) and the password you can set up your Mac mini.
On you Mac mini if you open…
System Preferences > Network > Airport > Airport
… you will see "By default, join" option. Change it to "Preferred networks". Now, you should see an empty list with a +, - and Edit buttons below. Click on the + button and inster the Network Name (SSID), seelct the encryption mether you chose when you set up modem/router and when the password fiueld appears insert that too. Click OK and the window should disappear. Now click Apply in the Network System Preference and if you've done everything right your mini should now join your wireless network.
    That's it.

  • Help! Extremely slow Internet speed using Linksys WRT54G router

I have an eMac running OS 10.3.9 and wired to a Linksys WRT54G router using ethernet cable. I have to use this router for my work PC. I'm also using WildBlue satellite internet. The problem is, I'm getting about 1.5 Mbps on my PC, but less than 33 Kbps on my eMac. It was running faster before using dial-up. I've called WildBlue and Linksys tech support, and they can't help. Can anyone help?
By the way, my son is using his iBook on the same router, only wireless, and he's happy with the speed he's getting compared to dial-up.
    Thanks,
    Eric

1400 kbps is a lot nicer than 33 kbps, isn't it? You can possiblly tweak it a little more --- I know I've seen a MTU of 1460 mentioned --- since you can also revert back to the 1400 MTU setting you found.
(Broadband Optimizer is in one sense a nice GUI to the terminal commnads you found and used.)
One more thing to be aware of, satellite internet is subject to longer latency times than cable or DSL, due to the unavoidable geometry of bouncing data packets off a satellite in orbit. That could be an issue if you ever want to play real-time online multiplayer adventure type games. It shouldn't be an issue for being able to grab OS updates in minutes instead of hours, through. Enjoy your broadband access!

  • How can I improve my Mac's speed after installing Leopard on a G5 PowerMac?

    Hello everyone,
I have a 1.8 G hz PowerMac G5 (late 2004) - single processor. I recently installed Leopard 10.5.4 and now it's performance is VERY slow, including the Internet. Launching any application takes 4 times longer at least, and the speed at which tasks are performed and/or saved are extremely slow too.  I want to know if this can be corrected. If there is anything I can do to improve performance, short of buying more RAM? But if the answer is RAM, wil THAT improve the internet speed? It was pretty fast before.

More RAM & bigger faster Hard Drive will help, maybe a better Graphics card also, since 10.5 ises the Video much harder.

  • How to improve my mac pro speed

how to improve my mac pro speed

You don't have a Mac Pro, you have a MacBook Pro. There is no way to make it faster because you cannot replace the CPU with a faster one. You can add more RAM to help improve performance when you have a lot of concurrent applications running or use memory hungry applications. You can add a faster disk drive to improve the speed of I/O. You can sell it and buy a faster model.

  • Missing MAC addresses filtering in Linksys E2500 config

    Hi,
I'm currently setting the MAC address filtering for my Linksys E2500 router.
I have about 20 devices which i'm allowing to access my router, so i keyed in the MAC addresses into the config page and save setting.
But only 16 addresses are registered, the rest refused to register no matter how many times i key in, it just reset back to 00:00:00:00:00:00 after i click on save setting.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

I am having exactly the same problem with the same device (E2500; Firmware Version 1.0.01).
For the first several days (less than a week after I upgraded from excellent by every measure WRT54GL) E2500 worked fine with twenty one MAC addresses in the list.
Yesterday I tried to add a twenty second MAC address, and the list went down to 16 items (the rest being zeroes) .
Now I am limited to 16 addresses in the list.
It looks like a firmware bug to me.

  • .Mac server speed vs. other web hosting services

Does anyone have any direct experience comparing the speed with which iWeb pages load on other web hosting services in comparison with .Mac?
I find that when I access my site using IE on a Windows platform, the load times can be pretty slow. Do other web hosting services load iWeb pages quicker?
Is the problem iWeb, the .Mac server or both?
I am going to need to use iWeb, does it make any sense to switch to another web hosting service (e.g., blue host) to post my site developed in iWeb or will it make no difference?
    Many thanks for your comments.

iWeb offers try WYSIWYG page, which is cool, but if you get away from the standard websafe fonts, your site will be a bunch of fat PNGs and not HTML text, since the text fields will all turn into images. I went to a iWeb-created site recently that had two screens worth of text that iWeb had converted to a PNG. The text on the page took forever to download since it was a 650K image.
As previously mentioned IE (Mac or PC) has never rendered PNGs well. It's hard to imagine it doesn't support a Web-standard image format that's been around as long as the Web has. No wonder FireFox use is growing so fast.
There are other things that can be done to shrink site size and speed up loading. Basics, like limiting most pages to one screen, using a basic font like Verdana, and keeping images to small screen sizes. Also importing photo albums and images for blogs through iPhoto's button keeps them all as JPEGS. Movies and music are a really killer too, since iWeb loads those cool QT frames. When you have more than one per page, loading time can take forever.

  • Slow Internet Speed on Linksys router

I have an ibook that I use for work and when I am at work the inter speed is just fine (we're on an Airport). When I take it home and try to get on the net it is very slow. The crazy thing is, we have an Imac at home and connect via wreless to it and have no problems what so ever. Have any suggestions?

Mass market routers like Linksys are not very efficient with high speed broadband. I really don't think there's much you can do to improve the Linksys performance.
Just to be sure its the router you might want to check your cable modem signal strength; and the connectors from the street to your cable modem. Sometimes a bad splitter can cause very bad signal strength. You might want to test your speed by hooking up your iBook directly to the cable modem without a router. Run a speed test from somewhere like http://speakeasy.net. Be sure to pick a test location close to your home. If you get really fast speeds without the router than with the router then you know its the Linksys.
I had similar problems with Linksys. I upgraded it with the dd-wrt firmware. This improved reliability but not performance. You might want to buy a ZyXEL router which is very fast and very efficient. Also, its much more reliable than your Linksys router.

  • Solution to low download/upload speed on Linksys E900

I lost almost 2 days and nights searching to solve this problem. I pay for a 50 Mbps connection using PPPoE. When i put the cable directly into the computer, i could reach speeds of 7.5 - 8.5 MBps download within the network. However, when plugged in the router, on LAN from router i would barely get 4.7 MBps and on wi-fi about 4. Not to moention that on www.speedtest.net i would have less then 30 Mbps upload speed, and when i put the cable directly into computer, i would get speeds aroung 70Mbps. The problem is not that this router cant handle PPPoE or such thing (explanation read on somewhere on this forum) or that the router cant handle those speeds or some another stupid (defending Linksys) explanation. The problem lies within the firmware of this router. I also tried the LiveSupport but to no avail, reflashing with the same version of flash, getting the same speeds. Lost one hour there. The solution is to upgrade to Tomato custom firmware from Shibby. Get the E900 version from here http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26RT-N/build5x-115-EN/Linksys%20E-series/, and flash it from Administration>>Upgrade Firmware. Before and after the flash, do the so called 30-30-30 reset (just check for it on youtube). I configured the wireless on 40Mhz Channel Width and Short Preamble. And that's it. Now i get 7.5 - 8.5 MBps speeds from LAN router, and on wi fi i got speeds up to 7MB. Thats aproximately 40% gains in terms of speeds, so it definitely worths it. Plus you get some pretty options, especially on QoS. Linksys should spend more time offering a better support for firmware, rather then selling devices that the user cant take full advantage of their hardware properties. I hope this post helps everybody who got this problem

Up higher in that post is some speed test results regarding a wireless N comparison between the TP-Link and EA3500. At those speeds I don't think the internet connection is the bottle neck. How do those wireless speed compare to your router Tomato speeds?
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.
