PC won't boot: fans stop spinning at start up!

Hi all
I have a Compaq CQ5335fr that worked just fine for a few years (3).
Then one day, it went off suddenly and wouldn't boot any more:
When I power it up, fans (CPU and chassis) start spinning for 15 seconds then they stop spinning. Only GPU fan keeps spinning. I have still blue and amber lights in the front of the desktop.
I usually push the power up button until it powers off. Then when I restart, same thing!
I tried the following with NO SUCCESS:
- clean & dust parts
- Reset CMOS
- Bought another PSU
- Played with DIMMS (put one by one, inverted etc.)
- Unplugged all components and replug one by one
- And a couple of other desperate things
- Put the hard drive in another computer to check if data are there: OK (although had "cant' access"  errors in the beginning
Nothing worked.
NOW I NEED YOUR HELP TO LOCATE THE ISSUE IN ORDER TO SOLVE IT!
Thank you in advance.

Hello again Moyiize.
I can't safely say if other motherboards would work or not.  However, you should be able to get the same motherboard through HP.  Here is a link to your computer's HP Part Surfer page.  You should be able to order it there.

  • Installed Safari 3.1, reboot, computer won't boot fans go into overdrive

Okay, I installed the Safari 3.1 update and restarted my computer. However it won't boot now. The displays stay black and after about 30 seconds the fans in the G5 kick on full blast.
I've tried shutting it manually and unplugging the power cord from the back. I also tried zapping the PRAM.
    Help? I would appreciate it.

My computer is also now not restarting. First Safari 3.1 had other apps stop working and now the computer won't restart. I tried Safe Boot and zapping the PRAM but it just cycles through two different blue screens.

  • Pavilion G2-b27SA Laptop Won't Boot - Fan Whirs and Hard Disk Light Comes On but Nothing Else

    Hi
My Pavilion G2-b27SA laptop won't boot. The fan whirs, the hard disk and wirless lights come on but nothing happens on-screen and the fan goes quiet after a couple of seconds (to a low whir).
I've gone through and tried the solutions in this thread - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-e-g-Windows-8/Laptop-will-not-turn-on/td-p/102825 - with no luck. Specifically, I've tried a hard reset and hitting F10 when the laptop tries to boot. Neither has had any effect.
Is there anything else I can try to get the computer working again? If I take it to a laptop repair shop (I'm out of warranty) will they be able to do anything, or is it effectively dead now?
Thanks in advance for your help.

The laptop can always be fixed if you have a bottomless wallet. On a no-start with flashing lights it is likely the motherboard and a motherboard replacement if you have the shop buy the board and bill you for labor will be about $300 give or take 25%. Before we give up, it could be bad memory or a few other less expensive things. Assuming they do not charge too much just to diagnose it; take it to the shop.

  • How do I back up my MacBook Pro from an external hard drive if my macbook won't boot up from the white start up screen? HELP!

I went to the Genius Bar a week ago, and the guy helping me there was nice enough to help me save some money by telling me I could replace the bad hard drive my MacBook Pro had by myself. I bought everything I needed (hard drive, screws, external hard drive) and my computer won't boot past the white start up screen. It doesn't even show the Apple sign at the start up screen. How do I back up my computer so I can save all my music, school files, etc.? Could really use someone's advice on what to do! Thanks!

Ok, to be sure I understand what's going on. You were able to boot the Macbook from the existing "damaged" internal drive, and it has been backed up to the internal.
If that is correct, your internal drive is working. Just to be sure, try booting with the R key down. Then run Disk Utility to repair the internal drive. That drive may in fact be useable.
You should be aware that you cannot boot the MBP from a Time Machine back up.
Please post back so I am sure I am understanding the situation.

  • System won't boot up constant spinning colored pinwheel

I installed Leopard on my Mac last night. After it finished I received the message that the install was successful. I noticed that my desktop items were not showing up so I restarted my computer. When it boots up now, I still don't get my desktop items. My icons all appear in the navigation bar at the bottom, but the little colored pinwheel spins and won't stop so I can't access anything.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Bill

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
First, I trust you made a backup of your previous system.
Did you repair HD and permissions prior to install?
Did you choose the default install (merge)? If so some of your older or non-compliant 3rd party apps may cause problems.
If you had any of these non-compliant apps in your "Login Items" list, that might be the problem.
Insert the Leopard DVD and reboot. When the system starts to boot (after the black screen) hold down the "C" key and you should wind up in the DVD. Skip past the Language screen and top left you will see a menu. Select Utilities and Disk Utility and repair HD and permissions.
    Remove DVD
Then reboot in the safe mode (hold down shift key at boot) and at the login screen click restart.
See if any of this helps. No guarantees.
Your profile tells us little of your computer. More data would be helpful.

  • Mac Mini G4 won't boot; fan full blast . . .

    Hello!
I was using my G4 Mac Mini when it decided to re-boot itself, and on start-up, all I heard is 1 loud whrrring sound from the fan, a short pause, followed by continuous whrring sound from the fan going at full blast (very loud!). The screen shows nothing.
I've tried the troubleshooting steps in the Apple site but nothing seems to work. Each time I start it up, it does the same thing.
A few months back I'd the unit repair under warranty by Apple (replaced logic board). So it's quite frustrating to have it down again - and now it's out of warranty.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Mac Mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It's perhaps telling that the problem occurred after the system forced a reboot. That tends to suggest there's a significant fault - likely hardware, since if the issue was with MacOS it would not be likely to cause the fan to ramp up to full speed on startup with the screen showing nothing.
You mention that you've tried troubleshooting steps, though not which ones. Likely, given that it features in G4 mini troubleshooting of startup issues, that would have included a PMU reset, but if you haven't yet tried that, do so. I would not hold out much hope that it will assist in this situation, but the power manager is the only hardware component that could cause this sort of potential issue, and the only one that can be reset by the user.
Assuming a PMU reset doesn't help at all, and since the system doesn't show any display, it's not worth trying to boot from the original install disk to run the hardware test since the system isn't even managing the power on self test, thus won't move on to loading MacOS. At that point, I'd say you should take the mini to an Apple store if you have one in your location, or to an Apple authorized service provider for them to give you an idea of what is wrong and what it would likely cost to repair it.
If you don't want to do that, the only option is to open the system and examine it yourself. The problem with that, however, is that there really aren't any user-servicable parts inside so other than checking that everything is correctly connected and properly seated, there's really not much else you can do.

  • MBP won't boot past grey spinning gear screen

I tried to turn on my computer the other day, it turns out it wont boot up past the grey spinning gear screen.
First thing I did was reboot from SL install disk, I ran disk utility and tried to verify and repair my HD, both came back with errors... uh oh
I then tried to back up the hard drive by creating a new disk image of my HD and placing it on my USB external, came up with and I/O error... oh sh*t
I tried reinstalling snow leopard and it could not be installed... F*CK!
I tried starting it up single single user mode to see what was happening, turns out it get to the line "dis0s2: I/O error blah blah blah" and then keeps iterating it indefinalty, leading me to believe my hard drive is dead or dying.
    so now for the question:
Is it still possible to backup my hard drive in this state? I know, I know, should've been backing it up all along but I'm stupid and didn't. I don't really care about my user setting or anything like that but I use this computer for college and have tons of documents on it that I need.
Also my applecare has expired so i would like to stay away from those genious bartenders.
    Any suggestions?

If you have access to another Mac with Firewire then you can connect the two via Firewire cable. You can then attempt to boot your computer into Target Disk Mode. If that's successful then boot the other computer normally. If your drive is accessible it will appear on the Desktop of the other computer. It may then be possible to copy your files if the drive is at all intact. If not you may be able to use recovery software to restore your files. If the drive is not accessible even to recovery software, then you would have to send it to a business that specializes in drive recovery. These are very expensive alternatives - $500 minimally.
You can also try third-party disk repair software. The best of the lot is Disk Warrior, but if the drive has a hardware failure preventing access, then I'm afraid there's little you can do to recover your files beyond sending the drive to a data recovery service.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • G5 tower won't boot; fans ramp up until I shut down

I'm running a Dual 1.8 GhZ PowerPC G5, with 1.5 gig of RAM. I recently replaced the power supply, as the one that came with the machine died.
I left the machine running last night, and this morning I found the fans ramped up as high as they could go, and the screen telling me that one of the external devices had been disconnected improperly. (This had happened once or twice while I was using the computer before I went to bed. Couldn't figure out what the problem was.) I shut down the machine by holding down the power button. When I turned it back on again, it wouldn't boot. I get the startup chime, and the main HD spins up, but the screen remains blank (the light on the display still works the way it should).
I was somehow able to get the machine to start from my backup drive once, so I verified and repaired the main drive. It checked out fine. I tried another restart, and the machine wouldn't boot again. It has since refused to boot, getting no farther than the startup chime.
I've tried pressing the power management button. I've tried booting from the Leopard disks, and I've tried zapping the PRAM. However, it appears that the keyboard isn't having any effect, as the last two didn't work either.
Anybody have any thoughts? I've removed and reseated one of the RAM cards, but haven't had a chance to try the rest yet.
I can't afford a new machine right now, so I'll try pretty much anything to get it to work again. Thanks!

UPDATE: I removed the Belkin PCI card I had installed in the machine, and it started up with no problems. So, it would appear the card is the problem. It's been working fine for months. Is it possible that it just up and died for no reason?
This is the card I had in the machine:

Having a problem with my old A1260 - When I hold down the power button, the fans click, but the system won't turn on. Opened it up and can visually see fans ticking slightly, but they do not turn on all the way. Tried with full battery, without battery (only on adapter), tried resetting SMC.
    Thoughts?

  • ATA drive won't boot alone-gray spinning startup screen. But will w/others

I'm troubleshooting a friends G4-PCI. And i can't get past a certain problem with the hard drives.
The hard drive (a 2003 80gb maxtor) doesn't want to boot.
But it will boot 10.4.11 if something else is in as well. So alone, i get only a flashing question mark. If another bootable hard drive in as well, the maxtor will boot. Same with a retail Tiger install disc.
    This is the situation after all the things that i have tried which are these;
The initial problem was that it would crash if any real work was attempted. Then after a few powerbutton downs, the spinning 'watch' with gray apple screen at the beginning of the boot.
What i have done. Transfered all files onto a bootable drive, by first booting into the installer DVD in order to direct the subsequent boot to be on the good drive.
question 1) there is no 'option' boot in order to choose the volume, on the PCI, correct?
Once booted into the good drive, the maxtor mounts no problems.
Disk Utility. Disk Warrior. Still the Gray screen spinner. Fine.
Zeroed the drive. And super dupered the good drive (also a 80gb, 20% full) onto the maxtor. I figured if one copy boots, then the other will. After choosing the maxtor in system prefs, it booted fine. I then took my drive out. Then booted to test again, the maxtor alone. And again, the spinning gray apple startup menu that just keeps spinning.
Both drives were cable select and i tried both positions on the cable.
question 2) What did i miss?

You may have confused the G4 by not correctly setting the volume Jumpers to Master and Slave correctly. Look at the coonnection pins on the drives and you will see one of them has a small plasticlink which slides over two of the pins. That’s your Jumper. You may need tweezers to lift it off the pins. Your main Drive is served by the first of the two IDE cable connections, (the one closest to the Motherboard). Set that drive as Master. There should be a diagram on the HDD case to show which pins the jumper slides onto to create the Master. The second drive needs no jumper as it is the Slave volume. It sounds like you may have used your Slave as a start-up volume without transferring the Jumper onto that drive to make it a Master. Check it out. Good Luck.

  • MSI R6870 Hawk (p) Fans stopped spinning

    Hi there
i Have a MSI R6870 Hawk graphics card and havent really had any trouble until two days ago, when i noticed my fans had stopped.
I do have MSI Afterburner and the newest driver (and tried to reinstall both)
i've had a look at the card and tried fiddling with the fans without any luck.
Sometimes they move a littlebit and yesterday i got them to run for a couple of hours (without actually doing anything as far as i know)
do you know what i should do to make them run proper again?
    br Bugge

Looks like they died what can happen. If still under warranty rma the card to fix that or use an aftermarket cooler like Accelero Twin Turbo II

  • Hard Drive failed- new one installed - won't boot - fans going full

I have a mac mini one of the earlier intels. I came home and the fans were going full on, I turned it off and treid to restart.. and got the empty folder. So I guessed it was the hard drive. Took it out and tested it on my enclosure - with disk utility - buggered.
So I installed another hard drive after I had installed the OS. As soon as I connected the powere cord the fans still going full on.
I still get the missing folder symbol.
I tried booting off a usb connected hard drive and it starts up.
    Any ideas?
I am guessing the hard drive has caused some other issue, can I do an internal reset?
Also, when I boot off the external hard drive and open disk utlity - I can see the other internel hard drive??
But it wont boot from it?
Appreciate any ideas... I have run out!!
    Thanks in advance

    AHA, just fan issue?

Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
    HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating
Instead of HDDFan Control, get the free SSDFan Control

  • IMac Won't Boot, Fans Working Loudly

Hello, I'm posting this as a favour for a friend. He has a 17" iMac G5 and has ercently let Software Update install the latest security patch for him. Directly after this happened he got a kernel panic so he shut down.Upon trying to reboot the screen stays off/dark, the fans work very loudly but nothing else happens. He's tried booting from his discs but still gets the same result, any ideas?

I've just posted a question, which I beleive is as a result of exactly the problem you describe. The faults you mention are pretty much what happened to my G5, my serial number falls after the mentioned Apple repair faulty machines. It went away for repair and had a new logic board and PSU. Since it returned the fan is too noisy and affects concentration when trying to work. Therefore, I reckon your problem is hardware and you may well need a PSU and Logic Board. When the engineer tests it make sure he does some procesor intensive stuff or at least leaves it on for a good 15 to 20 minutes to make sure the new fans ok. This fan is really p**ng me off!

  • MacBook won't boot past Apple logo on start up

I recently installed 10.5 on my MacBook and it worked fine until today when I installed a security update and a MobileMe update on it. after it restarted, none of the applications would work (including system preferences and finder) and would not shut down without using the power switch. When I went to boot it up again, it gets as far as the Apple logo with the spinning loading icon, but won't go any farther than that, and after about a minute, the fan starts running at high speed. I ran the hardware test and booted it from the disc and both showed no problems. the disc utility on the disc boot was even able to read the hard disc information. I'm hoping that this isn't a hard disc problem, because I already went through that before in February.

*I ran the hardware test and booted it from the disc and both showed no problems. the disc utility on the disc boot was even able to read the hard disc information.*
This suggests that your problem isn't hardware but that your OS installation is munged. I suggest that you run your OS installer and use Archive & Install. Assuming you have enough empty drive space, this will install your operating system without disturbing your data or applications. You'll have to reapply all the OS updates and you might find that a program or two also requires reinstallation, but not many. The last time I did an A&I on my personal computer I didn't have to reinstall any programs.
What happened? Dunno but given that you'd just installed an OS update before this, I suspect that the updater either failed or that there was a small OS problem that the updater magnified. Being in charge of a couple Mac labs, I see one or two of these post update failures a year even though I always run Disk Utilities to verify the disks before I update.
