PC won't boot, power LED on but, can't power up

I've tried everything and at this point I think it's my power supply.
I came home yesterday and my PC was off (it was on when I left).  I noticed the power LED was on (steady, not blinking) but, none of the switches would work.  I tried unplugging the PS and letting it sit for awhile and then trying it again but, again it wouldn't boot and the power LED just stays a steady green.
I only have 18amps on my +12V rail could this be the problem?  See my signature for complete specs.  I'm running an Antec Silent Power 350w PS (it came with my Antec SLK2650 case).
Any thoughts?
P.S. What does a solid power LED light indicate?  I couldn't find info on this anywhere.

I just ran out and bought a new power supply with 26A on the +12V line.  It was an Antec True 430 or something like that.  Nothing happens still.  The green light indicating power lights up and stays on but, nothing turns, no fans, no hard drives, nothing.  I'm thinking at this point it's the motherboad ... again!
Oh, just in case I checked to make sure the board was grounded correctly everywhere and it was, I'm guessing something got shorted on the either the ATX 12V line or the bigger power line that goes to the motherboard...
Oh well, no more MSI for me guys, they just don't want to cooperate with me.

Indicates BIOS corruption. Any changes made to your system before the issue occuredBeen inactive for 10 months due to having no power cable, I purchased a 3rd party power cable for it today. ProblemHello, as I stated above, my laptop has been inactive for 10 months and only today I decided to finally get a charger for it, which set me back £5.99, clearly a low quality charger but I was unsure if the laptop even worked anymore and didn't want to splash out on a manufacturer charger. When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED indicator next to the charger port lights up, but with the battery installed the charge LED inbetween the Power and HDD LED's flashes 4 times, on the 4th flash it holds for about a second then discontinues the blinks. When powered up the backlight and LCD do not turn on and the CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK LED's flash twice before pausing and repeating and the WiFi light glows orange. I can hear the HDD and fan spinning but the BIOS isn't initiated. I understand this error code refers to BIOS corruption and have attempted a hard reset, holding the power for 15 seconds as stated on some websites, then 30 as stated on others, and finally 60 seconds, as well as replacing the BIOS battery, HDD and memory modules to no avail... It doesn't seem as if the battery is charging at all, but it is completely empty so I'll leave it for a while to see if it does charge. Is this anything to do with the fact I bought a cheap chinese charger? Or would I have to replace the motherboard? AC AdapterName: WeiXin Da Electronics AC Adapter - PA-1700-02Input: 100-240v ~ 1.8AOuput: 18.5V ~ 3.5A Many thanks, Jordan.

This is a phenomenon of these computers.
If you have a computer that won't boot, remove battery, unplug charger. Press powerbutton for at least 20 seconds, insert the power cable, and hold for another 20 seconds. Nothing will seem to happen. Then press power again.
Your LiION battery is close to end of life. Replace. Or get used to doing this. Diag software will warn for failed battery. You will also have a ton of BIOS messages about an obscure error occuring. But you need to have a working Diag partition to make some sense of the meaningless error reported in BIOS.
This has nothing to do with the RTC/NVRAM backup. But it's no reason to not replace it. It costs about 3$ and you can find a 2032 Lithium cell almost everywhere. (3V, 20mm diameter, 3,2mm thick). Located under the harddrive bay cover on the bottom of computer.
If no boot occurs, check that the "lid closed" switch is working. In some environments they can get stucked in "Lid closed" position.
Also if you have access to a can of compressed air (duster), clean the airflow / cooling part from accumulated dust.
These are not exactly the most energy saving computers. They get hot. I have seen examples of plastic chassie parts melting.

  • My ipod touch 2nd gen 8 gb won't boot! (I did hold home and power)

So my ipod touch 2nd gen 8 gb won't boot. It never really fell on the ground it was not jailbroken and I had it for almost a year. Yes I have googled it, yes I holded home and power button at the same time,  basically did almost everything possible. I'm thinking it's the battery but might be something else. If you recognize this problem and know how to solve it, please reply here. I also can't connect to itunes in case your wondering

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • T410 won't boot, blank screen and keyboard unresponsive at power up.

Hi, my Lenovo T410 laptop won't start. I hit the power button and it looks like it's about to boot up. The thinklight blinks on as normal, the cd drive is checked, the caps lock button blinks on, then nothing. No display, and keyboard is unresponsive. Power light remains on; if I leave it a while the fan comes on. I can turn the machine off using the power button, but the problem remains next time I switch it on.
I've tried removing power and battery, pressing power button 10 times then holding power for 30 secs, before replacing power and battery, but nothing happens. I've tried using a different keyboard. I've tried plugging in an external monitor. No change.
This problem appeared after I left it on overnight. I have a hunch that it went into hybernation mode, perhaps, and that it disrupted some important function which it was unable to complete. Not sure though. Any help gratefully received.
    Many thanks,
    Pete

    Hi, Fn+F7 didn't do anything.
So I took out the HDD and both RAM modules, including the one under the keyboard. At power on it beeped as follows: 1 beep, followed by 2 series of 3 beeps, followed by 1 beep.
I replace the HDD and one ram module under the keyboard leaving the other one out - this didn't change anything; I then switched up the RAM modules - again, no change. Does this mean the motherboard and processor are OK? What could the problem possibly be in this case? Very mysterious!
Incidentally, I should perhaps have mentioned that I kept the unit in an unheated room and it did get very cold there a few days ago, which coincides with when the booting problem first appeared.

  • XServe won't boot from any drive, but recognizes them in OS X Installer

I know I have another post here but this is a different issue, and I've already fixed that one thanks to Camelot .
I just received an 2 used xserves for work. One booted into OS X Server fine, so I scrubbed it and reinstalled without issue.
The second however never booted into an install. That is, I never found it on my network when I started it up and when I pushed the power button it would turn off immediately, suggesting that there was no OS on the disk or that the xserve couldn't find it. I didn't have a spare monitor to plug into it (surprisingly) so I just chalked it up to the fact that it was a new disk and hadn't had OS X Server installed on it.
Now I have a spare monitor, I've gone and installed OS X Server on the xserve. It boots from the DVD just fine, runs through the installer, then when it goes to restart, it won't boot from the hard drive that it just installed OS X Server on, it'll just boot back from the DVD unless I pop it out. If I let it boot up without the DVD in it, I'll get the standard Folder with a ?.
At first I thought it was the drive, so I installed OS X Server on another drive. Still wouldn't boot to that drive, so I booted from the DVD and repaired the disks in Disk Utility. Still nothing. I booted to DVD again and when I went to Startup Disk, it actually did show my disks with their respective OS X Server installs.
When I boot the machine holding alt/option, the system doesn't show my drives, only the DVD if it's in the slot.
I figured ok, this has to be the drives, so I swapped them with those of the identical xserve in the rack below, but my top xserve wouldn't boot from those drives either. Somewhat expectedly however, the bottom xserve would boot the drives that I took out of the first one.
Now I'm just stumped. Any ideas?
    PS, drives are unlocked.

If you are in US or Canada there is an option to order Recovery Disks on your support page in the 'drivers & software' list  for around $16. You can find your support page using the link at top of this page titled "Support and Drivers". To find the correct page you will need full Model number or Product number as listed on the Service Tag attached to bottom of laptop. If you need more help locating the support page please post your Model number and Product number.

  • T60P w/Docking Station Battery & Power LED's Go out when Power button pushed rem batt to fix

Subject line says it - unit runs fine, battery is is good shape, replaced charger with a new spare.  With PC on the docking station and all plugged in, both batt and power lights green, pushing either the laptop power button or the docking station power button, immediately extinguished both LED's and they remain that way until the laptop is removed from the docking station and the battery is removed and then reinserted into the laptop.  PC will then boot and run normally with battery showing full or nearly full charge.  Power cord can be reinstalled and all goes fine or the PC can be inserted onto the dock and all goes well also.  But, after a normal power down, the restart problem reoccurs, etc.... Any ideas out there?

    UPDATE #3
OK, getting interesting.  Last test was to shutdown and leave off overnight, after having been successful at rebooting several times in a row beforehand.  After it sat overnight, with AC adapter plugged in, it would not boot in the morning.  Same situation as has been the case.  Pulled out battery, reinserted, and boot took off.  Later, laptop was taken to an off site meeting, whereupon, it would not boot no matter what was done with battery or adapter.  Condition repeated back at home.  I then decided to check the battery voltage and found it to be 12.78v, which from my battery knowledge for Li-Ion's should have only been a max of 12.30v for this nominal 10.8v Li-Ion Panasonic battery.  (4.1 v/cell max, nominal 3.6 v/cell)  So, it appeared to be overcharged and would be why I was seeing no problems with restarts or short-term shutdown/reboots, but only after the battery had time to fully (Over) charge.  So, I connected a 1 amp load to the battery using a 12v automotive tail lamp bulb I had around and ran the battery down to 11.78 v.  I just wanted it below 12.3v.  When battery was reinstalled in laptop, boot was successful.  At that point, I reenabled the Thinkvantage Power Manager 6.4 program thru the config.sys program, where I had previously disabled it, and then rebooted.  Once booted up, I then ran a Battery reset, which took about 6 hrs to top of the battery charge, fully discharge it (somewhere in the 9 v range) and then recharge it.  Once that completed, I removed the AC adapter and drained the PC down to about 90%, and shut it off.  This morning, it booted just fine on the battery alone.  I plugged in the AC adapter and it charged up, but only to 91%, where I had told it to stop thru TPM.  It is now set in software to only charge to 91% and stop charging until the capacity falls to 85%.  This is planned to be a temporary setting, just until I understand further what is happening.  The 'reset' capacity of the battery is now 77 WH, vs the design WH originally available as reported by the battery BIOS as 84 WH.  In other words, the new 100% capacity is 77Watt-hours instead of what the battery had two years ago when it was new.  I also just discovered a 'Important Message' related to the Battery Software Update Utility that describes a problem with certain Panasonic manufactured Lenovo batteries that sounds like what I have been fighting.  This problem battery is a replacement for the original one from 2007, which also died and completely locked out the laptop.  Until I can get the laptop shutdown and pull the battery to check the FRU/partnumber, I will not know for certain if it is indicated in the Lenovo Battery Utility Update or not, but I'm betting it is.... stay tuned.....ok - just checked the battery - it is a 42T4620 and not one of those listed in the Battery Utility Software Update - but I think is should be!  BTW, shutdown, removed battery to check P/N, rebooted - all fine.  The 'acid' test will be to leave it plugged in over night and see if it restarts okay....TWT...  oh, and in case you're wondering, I have a new laptop on order because this is nuts.......:-)

  • My new x48 won't boot up, LED matrix shows "LOGO"

    Hi,
I have just purchased a new X48 platinum, below is my sys spec:
Core2Duo E8400, boxed fan, fan connected to 4-pin fan connector, and did spin when booting up.
    Kingston 1333MHz DDR3 2G*2, CL9, in slot 1/3
Sapphire HD3870, placed in the first PCI-E 2.0 x16, as instructed.
connected 24pin power plus 4pin cpu connector, graphic card has its own power connector. Apart from that the system is standalone, except of course keyboard and monitor.
I disconnected all other components so as to minimize possible problem areas.
However, I still get bootup process hanging at logo phase, the 4-letter-post-led shows "LOGO", screen shows LOGO too. Pressing DEL/TAB would not do anything. Had to long press power or press reset to power off/restart. short pressing power or using keyboard doesn't work.
Could any body please give me a clue what is wrong? I have also tried resetting cmos a number of times, seems not helping at all.
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Br,

I found out that chip with a label "A7353 IMS220" (the last 0 was unsure as it doesn't read clearly)
    A7353IMS.220 means BIOS v2.20
    Quote
Does this mean my BIOS is out of date?
It is not out of date, it just does not inlcude the proper microcode for the E8400/E0.

May I ask if this is an obligation of them?
A good reseller should offer such services but I wouldn't call it an obligation in the strict sense.

Otherwise what is the best option you suggest me to do?
The most convenient way would probably be to borrow a supported processor.  Otherwise, ask in a local computer shop.

Does "blind flashing" work even when there is no response to keyboard during booting?
It works in most cases, however not in all cases.  Also, if there are problems that may cause system instability (RAM related for example) that may result in a system crash during flashing, your board will be dead and you will have to RMA it.  This is a risk that comes with every BIOS update, however, when you decide to perform a blind flash in this situation, you have no way to check system stability beforehand.

  • MacPro won't boot from any disk but the original

We picked up a lightly used MacPro 2 x3.2G Quad Intel Xeon at work. The plan was to remove the internal drive (which is also the boot disk) and replace it with a brand new WD Caviar Black 500G drive with OS 10.5 freshly installed, and then use Migration Assistant to transfer from the old machine.
The problem is that when trying to run the OSX install disc on this new machine, it will restart, but then not boot from the install disc. Rather, the apple logo pops up, it thinks for a bit, then the grey curtain drops and i get the multi-language "you must restart your machine" message.
So, after successfully doing an install of the OS on the fresh drive using a different machine, i put it back into the new one, restarted holding OPT, and selected the fresh OS drive. I get the same multi-language message, and the machine will not boot. I've tried installing the OS on a different HD as well, to the same results.
The new machine will restart using the startup disk (internal HD) that came with it and will run Apps, etc. To confuse things further, i pulled my startup HD out of my personal tower at home (also running OS 10.5, but it's been updated to 10.5.8), stuck it in the new machine, and tried to reboot from that. This DID work (normal time startup, apps work, etc).
I thought this might be a HD problem, but now it seems like a machine problem. Maybe it doesn't like the OS install? I dunno.. Thoughts?
I just had one. I'll try to clone my HD/OS from my personal computer to the new WD 500G drive, and if that works, i'll just go from there...maybe i just had to type this out to think of something different to try, but i'll post it anyways...

So you're saying essentially that this new machine, when it came out of the Apple factory, had OS 10.5.x installed on it, and because that was the original install, it won't recognize something that has OS 10.5.0, even if that install is on a fresh HD? Basically the hardware inside the tower can't/won't recognize any OS prior to the original 10.5.x factory install?
well, if that's the case, then 1)that's ridiculous of Apple to do, and 2)it makes this whole problem make more sense, and it's good future knowledge for me to have.
I cloned my personal OS (but not the users, docs, etc) and stuck that in the new tower, and it works well so far. I'm in the process of copying files to other internal drives, and i'll be using Migration Assistant to transfer users from our old system to the new one, and if all still works fine after that, i think we'll be good to go. So, based on what you've told me about the factory OS install, etc, i think we're on the right track.
Thanks very much for your input!

  • IMac won't boot 10.6.4 but will Windows 7

Was playing a game on Windows 7 via Bootcamp. I restarted, and my iMac took an age to get to a blue screen on my Mac partition and then hung.
Reset the PRAM, rebooted and then it got to the Snow Leopard screen, but I couldn't select either of the user accounts, as although the mouse moved about it wouldn't select or click.
Tried again with no keyboard (prompted to install Bluetooth keyboard), another mouse, all have same problem.
Then tried to boot the Install DVD to use Disk Utility, but it gets to the Language choice, and again can't highlight options or click.
Single-user mode works but fsck finds no issues.
Safe mode either hangs at blue screen, or gets to login screen but won't click/highlight.
    Apple Diagnostics show no problems.
And through all these problems, my Windows 7 installation is working perfectly.
    Any ideas?

    Seem to have sorted it.
For some reason my OS X partition had become 'unblessed', and selecting it in Startup Disc gave the prompt about not being able to bless the disk.
Finally managed to get my Install Disk to boot, wiped the hard disk, re-partitioned, re-installed 10.6, rebooted holding Command-Option-P-R, and when I heard the second bong, let everything go except Option. Once in the startup manager, I selected my new install, and it chirped up with the intro music for a new install.
It seems that something corrupted the OS X partition and removed it's 'blessed' status, and although I reset the PRAM and NVRAM, every unsuccessful boot re-corrupted the PRAM/NVRAM.

  • SP6000 won't boot from a DVD (but does boot from CD)

    Hi,
It's the second time I try to boot a Linux Live DVD (burnt on DVD-RW), to no avail: the disk spins for a few seconds at several (low) speeds, then the boot reverts to HD. On the contrary, it boots fine from a recovery CD or a Win installation CD (both burnt on CD-RW).
Is this a known "feature" of the SP6000 BIOS, or of the drive (Toshiba SD-C2502)? Can this be circumvented?
    Thanks for any help.
    L.

For some reason, I've had to change the BIOS' boot order (typically F2 at start-up) to have the CD/DVD drive in the first position when booting from a DVD in order for the drive to complete the process.  Merely selecting the CD/DVD drive by hitting F12 is insufficient.
It appears that the CD/DVD drive either resets or is powered down too quickly to get through the amount of data on a DVD, but a CD is small enough to finish the load.  Reordering the BIOS seems to keep power and attention on the drive though.
Let me know if that works.

    1. Unplug the computer and remover the bottom cover of the iMac and disconnect the main video cable. That's the one held in by 2 screws.
    2. Try to startup the computer with the video cable disconnected.
    3. Listen carefully to the iMac. Does it sound like it is starting up? Do you heard the normal hard drive sounds? If so, then your flyback transformer is dead. If you don't hear the normal startup sounds and it shuts down right away, the the problem is something else. Like a bad power supply or something like that.
Special shout out & thanks to djon for the above valuable information.
