I have the same mobo as you. What version number are you on bios wise? I have 7.12 As for your friend. HP does do frequent hardware revisions. Especially with their mobo's. So, he could essentially have a different version than both of us. Try to grab some info if you can using CPUZ and post results for mobo. Here are mine. Pay close attention to the model # and compare his with yours. Another thought. Depending on gpu brand and the bios they use. They might be more legacy bios friendly along with full UEFI support as well.
Some might only support full UEFI. Let me give you an example. I have a EVGA Superclocked GTX 660. They released a bios update for the card to support full UEFI. I flashed it and guess what? My PC would not boot up any more. Not compatible with the newer video bios. Thankfully before flashing. Since I had a bad feeling about it. I backed up my previous original bios and was able to restore them using another pc. Then putting it back in my pc. Booted up fine and works perfect again.
I am also curious. What might be the exact GTX 780 your friend is running? Brand and model wise.

Hi?I tried installing my new X-Fi XtremeMusic card but whenever I try turning the computer on, the computer wont boot up, or even reach POST. The monitor doesnt even power on. As soon as I remove the card and try turning it back on, it all boots up just fine. I have tried installing to different PCI slots with the same results. Whats the problem?

That seems to be a known issue that have been for a lot of time around with some combinations of X-Fi, mobo, and GPU...
This problem doesnt have any real solution at all... if you dont have a way to config in the bios the priority of video card, like what goes first for video PCI or PCI-E, that is the only way to fix it so far.

The point is, someone in the forums already did. All the forum regulars should remember when it happened too. A guy chastized us because we ask about the specs on people's power supplies. He took every post in the VGA forum to date and catagorized the solutions and found that only 50% of the problems in the forums were Power Supply Related.  To me, if one out of every two problems in the VGA Forums is Power Supply Related, by asking the question, we can identify and solve 50% of the problems.
But we are used to people like yourself coming along every few months.  Are you sure you did not used to log into these forums under the username of elzie?
Is this one of your old Threads:

Yes, he does sound a bit like me doesn't he? (or vice versa). But no, we are two different people which your moderators can prove by looking at the IP addresses of both myself and elzie.
But I must admit he echo's my views. There is a definite danger that some posters who are here to help people will latch on to one supposed "solution" i.e. the PSU which is then tailored to fit all problems. Same goes for avoiding flashing the VGA BIOS especially over the Internet.
But as I've said before, 98% of system problems are software related and hardware only plays a minor role. It's a bit like a car. Without gas, you're not going anywhere regardless of all the technology that's been pumped into it. But gas can get contaminated with grit and can clog up fuel lines. So what should we do then? Change the whole car maybe? Or just replace the carburetor? After all, we don't want to risk damaging the machine by cleaning it do we?
There's just too much emphasis these days on blaming the product as the cause of the problem and replacing parts rather than taking the view that it's the user who has caused the problem himself by not following instructions when installing software. Statistics can be adapted to suit the issue too. But as I've already said, if the PSU was the main cause of failure of high end cards, the Internet would be literally littered with news about it. But there aren't any such articles, so how do you explain that?? And as Toms Hardware.com mentions here, the CPU and high end card can draw 160 watts. So it stands to reason that if you've got a 300W PSU, you've got more than enough over to run both doesn't it??
It's all very convenient to say, "replace the PSU and your troubles will be over", but if the problem persists after doing that, it won't do MSI reputation any good and the only benefit will be that a PSU manufacturer will have made a little extra profit this year.

  • Windows 7 wont boot after install of boot camp drivers

I have been trying to get boot camp on imac mid 2010 with Maverick.   TodayI used
    Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5621
    The first set of drivers
    Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033
kept crashing on windows. Today I noticed a new set of drivers, well its the same issue. If I leave off the boot camp drivers windows is fine, except no sound and other driver missing issues but it works. The problem seems to be Mav or the drivers, before updating to Mav everything was fine. Sometimes I can even get to the windows log on screen, at one point I was able to log on and do things. So being smart, I restarted and the problem came back.  Who says Macs dont have issues.
    Any thoughts

Just ran into this same issue.
My problem got resolved after using the x64 version DVD of Win7 (just x64 instead of the DVD that had both x86 and x64 versions).
    What I did:
    My host is Windows 8.1
After installing Windows 7 x64 as VM on my 8.1 based laptop two days ago, I wanted to do the same on my desktop PC, but I had the same issue described here.
I used a DVD just with the x64 version for my laptop and a DVD with both x86 and x64 version for my desktop.
Tried repairing as advised by a post, but got the error: "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible
with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows."
I exported and imported the VM from my laptop to my desktop to test it and it ran with no problems.
So I tried the DVD that had just the x64 version of Win7 and that installed without issues.
I'm curious if this happens only when a DVD with more than one Win7 versions is used.

  • No boot after installing new hs?

hi, I just installed a new heatsink on my computer and now it wont boot..
when I press "power on" I get no picture, the  fans spinup for like 5sec and then all is dead..
Im quite sure I broke something but what? cpu or mb or both?

thank you for all the replys
I dont think taht the bios is corrupt. There is no visual damage on either the processor or the motherboard. I belive that its the motherboard thats broken because of me installing the heatsink and because i dont want to by a new processor (more expensive)
I had some trubble removing the backplate when I was fitting the new hs (I couldnt use the old backplate) and the old backplate was glued.
That is why I think that I might have problems with the motherboard. I dont think that the processor is getting any power (it should generate some heat even if its only on for 5sec?)
and the testing bit...well it would be nice to have a spare of everything...but when I upgrade I buy a new generation motherboad/cpu

    Hi,
Most PCI-E 3.0 cards are backwards compatible with PCI-E 2.0 slots.  However, in order to get PCI-E version 3 you need to be using an Ivy Bridge processor.  Review these specifications for a typical NVIDIA GTX 650.

  • Osx wont boot after installing windows dev preview.

Hi. I recently added boot camp and windows 8 to my 2011 mbp 17". Ever since the install my computer wont boot osx unless i run disk utility and repair my mac partition. Then everything runs fine untill i go into windows again and then go back to osx.  Thoughts?

    mcwilliamsc wrote:
Do i need to make a clone or will my time machine backup work.
TimeMachine drives are not "hold the option key bootable" like a clone and with Lion there is only a "hold Command r"  Recovery Partition on the same drive your trying to repair.
So to get a external source to boot Lion, you need to Carbon Copy Cloner Lion to a another new/blank Disk Utility HFS+ Journaled formatted drive. Disconnect your TimeMachine drive before doing anything and don't clone to it or everything will be erased, use another drive.
Once you have Lion cloned, hold option and boot from the Lion clone and test it out.
    mcwilliamsc wrote:
I only have one external drive andni dont think a clone will fit.
Only clone to another drive with no data on it, don't clone to a partition, don't clone to a TimeMachine drive. Disconnect all other drives before cloning so you don't make a mistake.
    mcwilliamsc wrote:
Also when you say c boot do you mean using a lion install disk as opposed to the install option when you boot into disk utility?
Your signature says you have 10.6.8, obviously there are no install disks for 10.7, however you can make some by "hold option" and clicking on Purchases in the MacAppStore and redownloading the Lion installer (but don't install)
Follow these directions to make multiple "hold c" bootable DVD copies of the Lion installer.
    http://eggfreckles.net/notes/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
Test the disks out, you can see it's just like the 10.6.8 installer disk with Disk Utility and everything.
With a Lion DVD one can install Lion AND the Lion Recvoery Partition on a new or totally erased drive, like we are about to do.
When you clone Lion, it only clones the Lion OS X partition, not the Lion Recovery Partition. So by totally erasing the entire disk and installing Lion from the DVD can the Lion Rececovery Partition and Lion OS X partition be restored and your GPT repaired and your firmware flushed.
So once you got a Lion clone disconnect it, then c boot from the DVD and erase your ENTIRE Lion internal drive, this means you have to select the drive makers name on the left, HFS+ journaled of course.
Once that is competed, install Lion fresh, this will create both the Lion OX  partition and the Lion Recovery Partition.
When that is finished, don't bother booting into the fresh Lion install, simply option boot off the Lion clone and reverse clone onto the Lion OS X partition, this will place back Lion, all your programs and files just like before.
Then you should be back to normal, your GTP is fixed, EFI is fixed (reboot twice) and you have everything except the Windows bootcamp partition.

  • BIOS wont boot after install X

So I install the May drivers. Get the sound card to at least play sound. I then turn the computer off ( EVGA 680i, QX6700, 8800ultra, 2gigs PC28500,X-fi FPS Gamer Fatalty, Vista Ultimate32bit) Next day I turn it back on and it wont even go to bios. I then have to reset my whole CMOS which is annoying as hell and then it boots again. I have had to do this twice so far...which is everytime since I install this card.
Im thinking of just yanking the **bleep** card out. I got 5. to work, but when i play music sound is coming out of one speaker, DOH. All in all I wouldn't be so piss if there wasn't the bios problem. Any way to fix this? The funny part was the main reason i got this card was cause of the dri've bay console looks fetching in my black brushed aluminun TJ09 Silverstone case.

Try this. Download a repair disc from here.
Windows Vista Recovery Environment ISO X64 version (64 bit)
If you can reach the Recovery Environment by booting that, try the Startup Repair and let us know what happens. Sometimes you need to run it more than once.

  • Please help! emac wont boot after installing os 9 alongside os x!

    Hi,
I am a teacher. My school recently gave me an emac to use in my classroom that has Tiger installed on it. I have a bunch of OS 9 games that I want the kids to be able to use, so I decided to try to install OS 9 alongside os x. I just installed OS 9 on the same partition as os x using an OS 9 emac installation disc. I had to install OS 9 on the same partition as OS X because I am not allowed to repartition the school computer. I tested out classic in OS X, but it didn't play the games well. I then tried to boot naively into os 9 by going into system preferences, then to startup, and then selected OS 9 as what to boot into. When I restarted, the only thing I was left with was a floppy disk with a flashing question mark inside. I tried to boot back into OS X by holding the option key, but my only option for booting is OS 9. I then tried to boot back into OS X by holding down the "x" key, but it still tries to boot into OS 9. Could someone please help?
    Thanks!!
    -Stacy

    Hi, Stacy -
Since the machine boots to the OS 9 Install CD, it is indeed OS 9 bootable, by definition.
Since the installer on the CD was able to 'see' the destination drive, then that drive does have OS 9 drivers on it.
Those two are the primary causes for a machine not being able to use OS 9 as a boot OS.
I assume you accepted the default install of OS 9 and did not customize it. If that is the case, then it should have installed all files needed by your machine in order to use it as a bootable OS.
About all that is left is make sure that the OS 9 System Folder has been blessed - registered as a bootable OS. To do that, boot to the OS 9 Install CD but do not run the installer. Instead, open the icon for the hard drive (if it is not already open), locate and open the System Folder (not the folder named just System - that's OSX). Drag the files named Finder and System (both are loose in the System Folder's window) out to the desktop. Close the Syatem Folder. Then drop those two files back into the closed System Folder.
Once that is done the System Folder should be displaying a miniture glyph of the Mac OS logo superimposed on the icon for that folder.
One other question, re the CD you used for the installation. Was it a Software Install CD specific to that machine (does it show eMac on the label)? Or was it a retail OS 9 Install CD (white label, gold 9)?

  • Wont Boot or Install New OS - Flashing Folder with Question Mark

I was trying to upgrade the OS. It downloaded all files. Asked for restart and then went into this mode of displaying flashing folder with "?". Tried to boot from original install CD by pressing down C key but again it gives flashing folder with "?". If I boot with D key even then it gives flashing folder with "?"
Should I try to replace the hard drive?
The CD I was trying to install from MAC OS X Install Disc 1 (10.4.8)
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.
It is an Intel processor. 2.16 Core 2 Duo.
I believe it originally came with Tiger pre-installed - it was purchased around early to mid 2007. However, it was then used by my son who went to a boarding school where they installed 10.5 I believe. And they "locked it down" with parental controls etc. Perhaps that is part of the issue.
I had logged into admin and was doing an OS Update (dont recall exact function). It downloaded bunch of stuff and then asked for reboot. On reboot it got stuck on the flashing folder.
The CD/DVD I am using is an Apple CD which says
    For Mac Computers
Mac OS X Install Disc 1
    Mac OS Version 10.4.8
    Copyright 2007.
I assume these are the original CD/DVDs that came with MacBook Pro.
