PC (XP) etherneted to IMac has limited connectivity

My PC(XP) uses the Imac for its Internet connection via an ethernet cable. The Imac is connected to a house wireless system. Suddenly the PC has a "limited or no connectivity" issue. I can see the contents of the PC by using the Imac finder, so that is at least telling me the card and cable are fine (more or less). To connect the two I used "Ethernet", location "Automatic" and then "Configure IPv4"-"Using DHCP with manual adress" under the IMac system network prefs. I had a number under the DNS server but don't remember what it was. On the PC I had automatic IP configure with the DNS inserted manually, the number which I don't have. When I go to "repair"  the network connection on the PC I get an error message saying that it can't "renew my IP adress". This problem just popped up suddenly as there were no hardware or software changes on either machine. Hope someone can help :-)

The problem you are having probably lies with the encryption key.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • Hyper-V vSwitch on a NIC-Team (Server 2012 R2) has limited connectivity

    Hi,
I have two servers both running Server 2012 R2. One of these servers is serving as a DC and is working fine. The other is supposed to be a Hyper-V-Host, but I cannot get networking working on this system. Both systems have Hyper-V role installed. Both have
2 NICs configured as a team. The team is configured as switch-independent, Hyper-V-Port, None (all adapters active). A Hyper-V-Switch using this team as external network is configured and is shared with the host operating system. This should work fine and
does on one of the servers. On the other I get a warning sign stating limited connectivity. The server seems to sent packages but it receives none. Deleting the switch and simply using the team for network access works fine. So it has to be related to the
switch. But I do not know what's wrong with it. Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Oliver

    Hi ogerlach_isw,
Generally please don’t install others role on Hyper-V server, if your DC using NIC teaming, please break the teaming then monitor this issue again.

  • XP laptop now has "limited connectivity"

I have an airport extreme, a mac mini, a macbook, and a toshiba using XP all working just fine on my wireless network. However, my HP laptop also using XP cannot connect any more to my network, I get excellent signal strength but limited or no connectivity. The IP address was showing as 169.xxx instead of the 10.0 xxx it should have been, now it is blank. Any suggestions?

  • My iMac has stopped connecting to my HP all-in-one scanner

Several weeks ago I attempted to use my scanner that had been working fine on the installed Mac software but my Mac would not connect.  The HP C5180 all-in-one works fine on print but not scan.  I hooked up the HP to my laptop and all functions correctly.  I installed the HP Mac software on my iMac successfully but again, no scanner.  Any advice?

Shame. Are you connected via a cable or wifi?
Some others on here have often reported problems when using the HP software that comes with the printer/scanner and recommend completely uninstalling that using the HP Uninstaller and simply use the HP software that is installed on the Mac. Latest version here: HP Printer Drivers v.2.6 for Mac OS X v10.6
If that fails you could try 'resetting the printing system' - just possible it might clear up whatever is upsetting the scanning side.
System Prefs>Print & Fax, Control+Click or Right+Click on the printer and select reset printing system. It'll delete all your printers and they'll need to be added again.

  • Wifi has limited connectivity

I have posted issues several times now without ever getting any answers. So here is the third attempt.
WEP security, while not reliable at all due to the use of PSK, is required for bridging multiple AP's into a the central router. The passkey is passed into the PSK encryption routine and to create a minor level of protection, the encryption populates one of 4 keys. In windows when I connect to a WEP network the login screen provides the passkey and a field for identifying which key is being used.
ISSUE: iPad login asks only for the passkey and NOT the key number. This is a bug and it seems the only way to get around this is to configure the router for key 1. Regardless this is a bug as the process should request which key to use.
I reconfigured my network removing the bridging, implemented WPA2-PSK with AES encryption to return the network to a secure state. However my iPad would not connect to the network. It looked like it was going to connect (long delay) and then reports it failed to connect. I used notes to create the passkey to ensure it was entered correctly. So far I've not gotten any answer as to why the iPad cannot connect using this security.
I reconfigured my network once again to use WPA/WPA2-PSK mixed and now I can finally connect the iPad to the network with the passkey. But when I go back it fails to join. Does the iPad handle AES encryption?
I'd really like answers to these questions as we are evaluating using the iPad as a key part of our architecture deployed at multiple customer locations internationally.

If you feel that there is a bug in the processing of WEP you can communicate this to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html. You should note, however, that WEP security is obsolete and insecure (it can be cracked in seconds with widely available software). WEP should not be part of any commercially deployed product.
The iPad does handle AES encryption. I and many others are using it without problems. Despite your precautions the password you entered was probably incorrect or you were having other network/router configuration problems.
It is difficult to comment on the reconnection problem you are apparently having without knowing more about the sort of network you have, type of equipment, configuration, testing procedures, etc.

  • Can i run a printer off the ethernet cable connection without hurting the imac or is the ethernet slot only for internet connection?

can i run a printer off the ethernet cable connection without hurting the imac or is the ethernet slot only for internet connection?

    Hi, Alan -
How can I connect to both printer (HP 4050n, via direct connection) and internet (via LAN), as my iMac has only one R45 port?
You can, but you'll need to expand your cabling a bit.
You'll need to get an intermediate ethernet hub, switch, or router. That device sits alone, with the Mac, your printer, and your modem/LAN plugged into it.
If you are already using a router, either separate or in combination with the modem (many modems have a built-in router), then you just need a hub or switch.
I use an ethernet switch (10/100/1000) to let both my Macs (a 2010 iMac and an elderly G4 DA model) use my HP4000n printer and my modem. The ethernet switch is a passive device, meaning there's no setup nor instructing it required - it's truly plug-and-play. All four items (two Macs, printer, and modem) are plugged into it via ethernet; both Macs have full-time independent access to the printer and the modem.

  • IMac fails to connect to AT&T U-verse via ethernet

I'm not a noob when it comes to my mac, but I don't know much about networking.  This problem has me really stumped:
For months, my iMac was connected to my U-verse router via ethernet, by way of my time capsule as a router.  Connecting to the internet via time capsule airport works fine.  No problems there.
Now, starting about a month ago, my iMac won't connect to the network.  When I run network diagnostics, "Ethernet" is green "Network Settings" is Yellow "ISP" is green  everything else is red.
In my Network control panel, under ethernet, my status is connected.  It says:
"Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet."
Configure IPv4 is set to "Using DHCP."
    Things I've tried are:
-Restarting my computer and both routers.
-Creating a new network location under prefs and starting from scratch.
-Setting my time capsule to "bridge mode."
    My setup again is:
    2011 iMac
    Mac OSX 10.6.8
    ethernet to a time capsule
    timecapsule ethernet to U-verse router
    ethernet connection is down
    airport works fine
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Changing the default timeout cannot be done in the Advanced Network settings of Firefox, however if there are some about:config entries that you can check. The features are made available by this add on: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tweak-network/] it will allow to change the max connections and prefetching and pipelining.
Otherwise, if you make changes to the advanced settings of how Firefox connects to the internet, restart it for the changes to take affect.

Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from  system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having

  • Imac has crashed..need new hard drive....had external drive connected...was using time machine.....so...itunes file should be on external drive....how do i import them to my new mac mini?

my iMac has crashed...was told I need a new hard drive.....meantime I bought a mac mini.....I had an external drive connected to the mac....and was using time machine for backups....so....how do i move itunes music files to my new mac mini from the external drive?

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source volume. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the access list. Give yourself read access if you don't already have it. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

I suspect a problem with your router. Try changing the security. First use no security as a test.
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

I can now use the computer as it does not respond to mouse or it appears to the keyboard.  Just not sure if it is a problem with the computer its self?

I would highly recommend you run a test by trying another mouse with the iMac and see if that fixes it.  That would tell you the problem is Not with the iMac itself.
