PC1066 RAMBUS Single or Dual

Can anyone tell me which is the best and the fastest PC1066 RAMBUS (Single 232pin or Dual 184pin) for the Intel P4 processor.
Also do MSI make a motherboard that supports Dual P4 processors and PC1066 RAMBUS (232pin or 184pin) and if there is such a moterboard can anyone point me in the right direction.

RIMM 4200 is the same in preformance terms as dual PC1066.
Dual P4 doen't exist, you need dual Xeons, preferably with an E7501 or E7505 chipset (dual channel DDR200/266).

  • Will the single or dual quad be right?

Does some have experience to advise me, which model, the single or dual quad "new" Mac Pro will deliver better results for editing images in Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture NX etc. And how much ram is a minimum for same with the new DDR3 type? Also, I do part time video editing (Final Cut Express). Thanks.

The cpu is smarter than that, and smarter than we are. A lot of things are going on below the surface, and in less than a nono-second is even a stretch in time, and changes. A core doesn't shutdown.
I suggest you actually dig into the technical papers and articles on Nehalem if you want to understand it more thoroughly. I've read that ARS article three times and still get something new with each read. And there are other articles. I feel like 2008 was just waiting and researching the sucessor to Penryn class (Harpertown).
The specials are just that, and they get 'hand tuned' and physically booted before they go out the door and usually have above the base spec listed.
I am not in favor of bleeding edge. Not until there has been one firmware update and one OS patch and time for 3-4 months minimum to flush out problems that surface. Some are still hoping the next OS update fixes issues with Nvidia 8800GT a year after it came out (and yes, drivers take a year of tweaking, Vista has had two years and apps/games and drivers are an ongoing experiment).

  • Single or dual 4500e for redundancy

I apologize if this has been asked before, but I haven't been able to find a solid answer when searching.
We're deploying a new datacenter and will have 20 racks of servers, mostly 1u.  Given our bandwidth needs which are reasonably modest we're planning on using dual 2960s switches at the top of the racks and aggregating on a single or dual 4500e using 10gig links.  The 4500e(s) will also have a bunch of 1gb devices such as firewalls, routers, and load balancers connected to them.  Pretty typical network core.    Given the need for 40 10gb links to racks and then another 20-or-so 1gb, the 4500e chassis seems to fit the bill.
My question is, do we go with a single 4507e with full redundancy (dual 10gb cards, one link to each from each rack, dual 1gb card, and dual supervisors) or a pair of either 4506e switches each with their own cards.  With a virtual chassis the 4506e is appealing, but I'm not up to speed on any limitations that might impose.   With IISU and the like does having two physical chassis vs everything in a single actually buy us anything if they're going to be in the same physical proximity anyway?  A big reason to go with the single chassis is space - 11 rack units vs 20.
If we do go with a single chasis, other than Cisco's HA docs on the 4500e, is there any documentation or case studies that I could use to sell the idea to management?  A number of people, especiailly those in favor of a ton of cheap netgear switches, argue that a single chassis is a single point of failure and we should never do it.
    Thanks!

As you've described, the problem with any single chassis, the chassis itself can become a single point of failure even when loaded with redundant components.  Independent chassis (e.g. VSS, StackWise) provide chassis redundancy although it does raise a question on software redundancy, i.e. multiple chassis are running some form of tightly coupled chassis OS vs. standalone chassis.  Standalone chassis should be, in theory, the most redundant but they too create issues such as load sharing and asymmetrical path issues (e.g. unicast flooding).  If you understand and trust a multi-chassis OS, I personally think it's often the "better" redundancy option.
I don't know if VSS on the 4500s support it, but 6500 VSS supports quad supervisiors, so if you lose a single sup on those you don't lose one of your VSS chassis pair.
Regarding your later post on using a 4500-X VSS pair, yes that might be an idea core for high density 10g.  For twenty 10g ports each, you would need either the 16 port with the optional 8 port module or the 32 port model.
Depending on your remote rack setups, you might also consider 3750-Xs, stacked, in lieu of multiple (individual cabinet) ToR 2960S pairs.  StackWisePlus is a much better stacking technology then FlexStack.  Yes, the 3750-Xs are more expensive, but you might need less if you can bring multiple racks to the same 3750-X stack.  (Depending on how many downstream stacks you actually need, you might also reduce your need for 10g ports on the core.)  Depending on your feature needs, you might even be able to use the LAN Base models which in the later IOSs also support StackPower.
10g is nice, but it's also expensive.  When working with switches within 100m, don't overlook the possibilities of gig copper Etherchannels.  For example compare total cost of 8xgig (copper) build-in ports vs. single 10g (fiber) especially if special module is required.

  • Single or Dual Processors for Tuxedo and/or weblogic 8.1?

We run Tools 8.44 and 8.20 and double checking to see if either Weblogic (8.1) or Tuxedo (8.1) would utilize a dual processor environment? We run these on Windows 2003 Server.
    Appreciate inisght.

Yep its all in the cache, and the L3 makes all the difference.
I remember when I was shopping for my upgrade, Gigadesign had two different models of CPU's, the (brand new at the time) single and dual 7447's which went up to a dual 1.8 and the older pre-Freescale models (cant remember the model number maybe it was indeed the 7455B??) that maxed out with a dual 1.4..
I remember reading benchmarks (and quite a bit at XLR8yourmac.com) about the older dual 1.4's being on about the same level as the dual 1.6 and 1.7 7447 cpus.. This was all down to the 1.4 having L3 cache on each cpu. The 7447 had double the L2 like the 7448 but no L3.. I didnt really care much since they were relatively the same benchmark, but I went with the dual 1.7 7447 anyways just because the numbers were higher..
And funny enough, the CPU never ran stable at 1.7, my Mac would crash and kernel panic left and right. I couldnt get any response back from their tech support (I think it was one guy that ran the whole thing) about adjusting the voltage on it, so it spent its entire lifetime in my G4 as a dual 1.67. Not too big of a difference but I couldve saved some money just flat out buying a 1.6 instead of the 1.7, and wouldve saved even more had I just listened and bought the dual 1.4 with L3...
John with a G4 - no problem at all hehe! Dont get me wrong I loved my G4 and it served me well for just about 10 years before it 'died' on me.. But after getting the late-2005 dual core G5 man oh man I wish I wouldve done it waaaaaaaaaay sooner!

  • G4 MDD for gaming (Tiger & some classic) single v dual questions . .

I'm setting up a computer for gaming.
OS X 10.4.11 (or 10.3 if thats better suited?)
Unreal, Icewind dale, Giants, Sacred, Shadow Bane, etc . .
All the older games 00 -04
Would it make more sense to use a 1.25 single cpu vs 867DP or 1Ghzdp?
Since tiger does not spport dual core, I'd assume most of the games don't either?
I know the 1.25 (or even a 1ghz single) runs much cooler than the dual under load.
Basically is a dual a waste without using Leopard or software that supports multi core cpu?
    Any ideas?
Message was edited by: Patrick Bagdasarian

When you say tiger is dual processor aware, how is it and when does it benefit?
Multi threading is supported in dual processor machines, allowing for the distribution of tasks (within one or with multiple tasks), making for faster performance. Boot, OS background services and processes, multi tasking, etc., are all improved and utilize the OS X multi processor/multi threading ability.
Granted, the processes are relatively rudimentary (as compared to forthcoming OS versions), but the support is there.
A major factor is that accompanying software must also be multi processor aware to gain benefits beyond OS X functions.
also how does this matter if the game is not dual processor aware?
No (or little) benefit will be derived from multi processors with SP processor optimized software.
Some CPU intensive gaming will be improved, simply due the the multithreading ability of the OS X core services.
Some DP aware software define which tasks are broken between two processors. In the case of UT2004, the audio portion is assigned to a separate processor, to allow more computational power of the other processor to be applied to graphics.
Other software simply allows the OS services to assign threads as the system protocols dictate.
This is only possible with a multi processor aware OS.
Actually, the ability of the OS to be DP aware began in OS 9. 3rd party software, however, was slow to take advantage of the ability.
Currently, multi processing aware software has to add multi core awareness to gain full benefit of current machines like the Mac Pro.
This is one of the big areas of development in OS X 10.6.
(When I used the term dual core, I just meant dual processors as in the mdd series)
I figured that you know the difference, but many don't. Keeping the terms straight is for the benefit of clarity and for all readers.

  • Heat sink single vs dual?

Here is what I've seen as far as identifying the heatsinks:
    Thick finned "heavy" heatsink:
-Single cpu the contact side of the heatsink is a square with a corner cut off.
-Dual cpu the contact side of the heatsink is a true square
    Thin finned "light weight" heatsink
-Single cpu the contact side of the heatsink is a square with a corner cut off.
-Dual = I have not personally inspected one yet?
Anyone know if the thin finned heatsink for the dual processor has a true square contact or is cut off at one of the corners?
here is a pic of the heatsink with the cutoff corner and the sight seems to point to it being a factory installed heatsink for a dual unit? http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/mddcopper_heatsink_swap/mdd_copper_heatsinkswap.html
I have a few of the thinned heatsinks with the slash (as opposed to the thick one with the true square taken from a dual cpu unit) I'd like to know if the thinned ones came in only one style (with the corner cut) or if there is a thin finned unit with a square contact for use with dual cpus.
Message was edited by: Patrick Bagdasarian

Yes, but the thick finned had two versions, one with a square bottom to contact the dual cpus (I've personally pulled these and looked) & one with a square with one of the corners cut off for the single cpus (pulled and verified also).
Did the thin finned one have this variation on the underside?
Can I post pics here to show? tell me how?

  • Performance Routing (PfR) with single router, dual ISP and load balancing

It looks like PfR can do this but I have only found information about this feature which will start using ISP2 once ISP1 reaches 75% usage. But this is not load balancing.
Can we accomplish load balancing utilizing a single router with dual ISPs using this PfR feature?
Or do we have to use another feature?
    thank you in advance

I'm rusty using OER/PfR, but I recall it could load balance two links on same router.  The issue, I also recall, if doing BGP, OER/PfR has to detect a load imbalance, and there's a certain difference allowance, and OER/PfR takes some time to decide, so depending on actual traffic, it might not be obvious it's working.  If doing BGP, there's a hidden command (which I don't recall is) that will load balance the two links on the same router; then you use OER/PfR to dynamically refine the balance load.

  • N5K - N2K Image Upgrade Single vs Dual Homed

    Hi,
The upgrade distuptive behaviour is not explained well in the following documentation link . Especially about single homed FEX topology.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus5000/sw/upgrade/503_N1_1/n5k_upgrade_downgrade_503.html
    1. I have just upgraded a dual homed Active / Active N2K to N5K environment as below. The downtime was exactly explained as above URL, just the time to reload the FEXs. Which was about 1.5 minutes or so...
Or should we NOT reload all the FEXs almost simultaneously by manual command (as mentioned in the upgrade guide) in this topology, in order to minimize the downtime ?
2.However I am curious if there would be any downtime in a single homed FEX topology as below. My guess is there would be just the downtime for the edge server to distribute the traffic to the other N2K.
I guess if the downtime is really a biggy,  then the second topology is easier to manage.
    Comments area very much appreciated.
    Dumlu

I am not able to see the images you attached, could you please try reinserting them?
Also if I am understanding your question correctly, you are wanting to know if there will be downtime, if you upgrade a N5K with a 2K single homed. I assume you meaning something similar to this?
If so, yes the single home fex would be reloaded per the document it states: "Upgrade the first vPC switch (vPC primary switch) -  during this upgrade, the switch will be reloaded. When the switch is  reloaded, any dual-homed FEX will not be reloaded.  Only singled-homed FEXs are reloaded. Servers connected to these  dual-homed FEXs retain network connectivity via the second (vPC  secondary) switch"

  • N95, N96 dual CPU, N97 single? Dual CPU s60 5th ed...

I've been playing around with Nokia's new QT development stuff. It's all pretty neat. It would be even better if I could use it to develop for Symbian under Linux or Mac, but that asides..
I came across a list of platform types:
Installer for all S60 5.0 (5th Edition) devices with a single CPU, such as the N97 and 5800 XpressMusic
Seems reasonable, but I also saw:Installer for all S60 5.0 (5th Edition) devices with dual CPUs
Hmmmm.. dual CPU S60 5th edition?
It lists some S60 3rd edition dual cpu phones too: N95 and N96
So, why exactly is the N95/N96 dual cpu, but the N97 isn't? Sure that was a step backwards?
Interesting though.. I wonder what the first dual CPU S605th phone will be? Presumably, something faaar better than the somewhat dull N97! I mean, honestly.. who wouldn't put a decent GPU in their flagship phone? presumably the same people who would put OS storage in double digit MB.. grrrr ..

I aggree, however I'm not sure these devices are frog leaping to that extent.
In the case of the N95, the dual core refers to core CPU and an additional DSP and GPU
    N95: OMAP2420 - 330 MHz ARM1136 + 220 MHz C55x DSP + PowerVR MBX GPU
The N97, however,is of the same architecture (ARMv6) but with a higher clock rate (434MHz) It isn't a new generation chip per se. It's just running faster.. and without the GPU..
The N96 is a bit different.. Apparently the difference between the N95 v N96:
CPU: N96 has dual ARM9 264MHz with no floating point instructions (N95 has dual ARM11 332Mhz with vector floating point or graphics accelerator)
So, the N97 has the speed of the ARM11 from the N95, but all of the same missing features as the N96.. more or less..
This makes the prospect of a dual cpu s60 5th all the more intriguing
    (thanks to wikipedia)

  • Single or dual?

    Hi
    I currently have 1.5 Gig of memory. 2 x 512 matched and 2 x 256 unmatched.
If I use all memory (1.5G) it is detected as single owing to 256 not being matched.
If I want to run as dual I have to sacrifice the 2 x 256 unmatched.
Which is considered better? 1gig running dual or 1.5 running single?
    Thanks in advance

    Hey BabyFace:
I just ordered a system (see below) with 1024 TwinX Corsair 3200LL memory. What has been your experience with the Corsair memory? Do you have V1.2 with SPD of 2.3.2.6? I'm hoping that my system will be both stable and that the PSU is of high enough wattage. Geesh, and I thought 430Watts was over doing it!

  • Single Channel Dual Channel Question, K8N Neo4 Platinum

Just putting together a machine for the Daughter. Using MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum board 7125-010, MSI NX6600GT PCIE 128 Video card with AMD64 3700 CPU SD and a 1 GB stick of Crucial dual sided memory, CT12864Z40B, DDR 400 3200. The rest of my parts arrived and just got it all together and booted into the Bios. The boot screen tells me the memory is DDR Single Cannel, 64 bit running at 3-3-8-3 and 2T timings. I have been into the Bios setup, but had let the memory boot at Auto settings. Is what I am seeing on this screen OK because there is only one stick of memory installed? Or am I just confused as normal? I was thinking it should read Dual Channel, but I am hoping that is just my backwards thinking at times. I wish all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks in advance for the guidance.
    Pop's

JayBee; Thank you very much for the quick response. The Daughter decided to go with the 1GB stick to begin with so as to possibly add another 1GB stick later. I don't think she will need it myself, judging by her computer use. She does no gaming or multi-tasking, so there probably will be no need to add more memory in the future. I was just wondering if there is any noticable performance hit by using a single stick vs a pair of matched 512's?? I used the same MB as in my sig, but noticed the new one has an upgraded BIOS. I hope it is an improvement, because I have yet had no problems with my machine which has the V1.6 BIOS. This new one which is about 2 months newer than mine has a BIOS V1.A in the bios screen. At bootup it is identified as ( 6A61FM49C-OO ) what ever that means. I read the forum daily and have noticed you are very active and consice in helping folks out. I very much appreciate your time and effort that you give freely. Hope you have a very safe and happy holiday season and SANTA is very good to you. I think we as a group need to get SANTA up to speed on gift giving in the computer upgrade department.

  • Problems Burning DVD's (Single and Dual Layer) with FCPX

I have been burning the same size and length DVD's every week on single layer DVD's and since the update I can no longer do it.
FCPX was great for the inexperienced user, Apple what have you done !!!!!
Because it now asks for a dual layer DVD I went out and bought (expensive) them and they won't burn either, it keeps coming up with an error message prior to completing.
I went through five of the dual layers and all had the same problem.
I need the program to be easy, it was and now its not.
Will there be a fix or how do I go back to the version prior to the update.

Is Share>DVD  the only export option giving you trouble? Will it let you create a single layer disk image?
If sharing works otherwise, export a master file. Bring that into Compressor and choose the DVD preset. In the Inspector>Encoder>Quality you should be able to adjust the bit rate down to where it will ft on a single-sided disk.( As you adjust te slider, the "Allows" message at the very bottom of the Quality tab will change. Be conservative and allow a cushion.)

  • Single or Dual 1.25???

    Guys,
I'm looking at a listing for a Power Mac G4 DUAL 1.25 selling for $150.
The specs seem minimal: 256KB, 80GB and the drive is a combo, not DVD writable. And the system is 10.2.6. The person has stated model # m9145LL/A. I've looked up the specs on the mirror drive macs and the model # for this is showing for a SINGLE CPU of 1.25. The dual version has a totally different sequence of numbers for it's model #. Am I reading this wrong? Of course, ultimately, all I have to do is do a "About this Mac" to reveal what it is,but...
Is this person just ignorant of what they have or could they have some how converted an original single to a dual CPU? Should I walk away from this deal?

    Hi=
Is this person just ignorant of what they have or could they have some how converted an original single to a dual CPU
    No, that's probably a 2003 1.25GHz MDD.
