PC5400 Memory

I wanted to add a gig of ram to my macbook pro. I was going to buy the
OCZ 1024MB PC5400D DR2 667MHz SODIMM Memory
Will this be compatible with the macbook pro considering the mac runs PC5300 ram?
Thanks

First of all, I want to say that if the price is okay for you, buy the apple ram! It retains one point of support for the machine and really simplifies it. Any problems you have and you can work with a retail store, which can save you shipping and stress of returning ram. (I can handle a little risk if the savings is huge, so I tried cheaper routes first)
The OCZ (2 x (85245) OCZ OCZ26671024VSO 1GB DDR2-667 PC2-5400 SODIMM Memory Retail) did not work in my core duo machine. I read the reviews about macbooks using it on newegg.com and it sounded like it would work, but my mbp downclocked the ram to 533 with two chips in and it is supposed to be 667mhz. I cannot say whether it would not work in a core 2 duo machine or other apple hardware. But for a core duo macbook pro, I wouldn't try it.
You would never know the OCZ would end up being 533 if you only bought one chip, but even if you paired a 1gb pc5400 ocz valueram with 512 apple ram, it would still downclock it to 533mhz. Did I notice, not really. Did I still see it in the system profiler, yes.
Also, the OCZ ram pased ALL hardware tests and did report as the correct ram model in the hardware test (OCZ26671024VSO).
I had sent the OCZ ram back this week and ordered a 2x1GB kit from crucial based on my computer model. It works perfectly and shows 2GB at 667mhz now, (yeaaaaa!). (model? CT541093, Part Number: CT2KIT12864AC667). It was $203.99 before tax/ship. I always default to crucial if I get bad memory, and they have always worked.
To sum it up: Apple ram is the best bet, one particular 2x1gb pair I tried didn't work and one did, (crucial memory is a great alternative).

I'm on the verge of buying a lower configured Mac Pro [2.0GHZ, 160GBHD; 1GBRAM ]. I was looking on Tiger Direct at RAM prices as I would like to add 1GB extra memory. Curcial has a 512MB Chip with the following specs...
    Memory Speed 667MHz PC5400
    Memory Type DDR 2
    240 Pins
I was thinking of getting two of these. Would this work with the Mac Pro? I'm a student so money is a real concern.
    thanks!

I don't see how it could. (though I am sure there is some lawyer out there who could make it happen ).
Apple DOES NOT say or write in any documentation that I have seen, that using NON APPLE memory will void ones warranty, or that using such memory will cause the system to crash/break/die/etc. They even provide the memory specifications in the Mac Pro manual. All they DO mention is the heatsinks being used, and how using non apple heatsinks "may" cause increased fan noise, or "may" cause the ram to run slower.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum/Diamond SLI BIOS reports

    Hi,
I'm seriously thinking about getting one of the above mentioned boards.  It's between those and the new DFIs.  I've seen the link to the latest Beta BIOS available for those boards and they sound quite promising.  I've heard the latest Beta allows up to 3.1V VDimm control.  Anyone want to comment on the overall improvements made with the BIOS revisions?  Also, general impressions with the board with regards to overclocking especially would be very welcome.  I've done a bunch of reading, but there just aren't that many posts about this.
    Thanks,

The mods move overlocking posts to  the "modding and overclocking" forum!
    My observations are this:-
I tested my system using memtest at various FSB's which gave the correct stock speed for each CPU multiplier, 200x11,2200x10 etc. In each case Memtest gave the same speed for the L1 and L2 cache, indicating these are drven by the CPU core speed, not the FSB. This means there is no intrinsic value in using a higher FSB for CPU, the only benefit comes if doing so allows you run the  memory faster! You might say the AMD64 FSB is the on die bus which connects the on die CPU core to the on die memory controller. Increasing the FSB just increases the bandwith beteen the core and memory controller, allowing you to benefit from using faster memory.
So  yes, you can achieve fantastic FSB's with this  chipset. I have managed to booted at 340!  But this didn't improve performance one jot as I had to use a huge memory devisor. But if I had PC5400 memory my system would really fly!
P.S. For some strange reason running my memory asynchronously allows it to be overlocked more. That's why I boot at 250.

  • Right memory to satellite A215 to run win7

I have satellite A215-S7422 with 1G. Ram PC5300, i wanna upgrade to 3G cuz my OS is windows 32bits, but i don't know if i have to use pc5400 or pc6400, wich of those will be better to my motherboard?
By the way, can i run windows 7 in my laptop? or i must buy one with windows 7 pre-loaded.
PS. I really like mine and will be hard to me change it.
    Thanks already for the answer.

You can run WIndows 7 on that system.  It can take a maximum of 4gig total with 2gig per slot.  Go to Kingston to see what memory it recommends for your system.  Kingston is the preferred brand for Toshiba Laptops and their KTT line is the one recommended.  They recommend 667MHz modules for your system.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Is there a difference between PC53000 and PC5400?

Hi everyone, I have decided to heed Scott Radloff's advice (thank you so very much) and upgrade my MacBook to 2 gigs of RAM. There's a store near me that sells 667mhz 200 pin SO DIMM DDR2 notebook memory, just like the MacBook uses, at a great price. The only problem is that the MacBook uses PC5300 memory, and this is PC5400. I've been searching around on the internet, and it seems that they're the same but have different names, but I want to be sure before I buy it.
Is there a difference? If I stick PC5400 in my MacBook, will the world explode? Does anybody know for sure? Thanks in advance!

Yes, it will be fine. As long as the speed of the RAM (i.e. PC2 5300, PC2 5400) is the same or higher than minimum for the computer, it will be fine. (The MacBook has a 5300 minimum).

  • Mac Pro PC5400 or PC2-5300 RAM?

About to order my new Mac Pro, and I intend on picking up an 8 GB kit of RAM. I have these two options, the second of which is much cheaper:
    http://www.canadaram.com/macram.html#MACPRO
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=350127 4&body=MAIN#detailspecs
The first link is "Apple Certified" and costs $533 for Techworks RAM. The second is from Crucial. Now both are 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM's, but the Techworks is, I believe, PC2-5300, while the crucial is PC5400.
Not only is the Crucial RAM cheaper for me, but the store is right around the corner. I would have mail order for the Techworks RAM. Can someone assist to explain what, if any difference there is between these two products? Much Googling has yet to resolve the issue for me. Thanks.

Thanks for the response. 2nd tier memory? No, I have not heard of it.
I am hoping this is just a marketing decision of some such with these different monikers for the RAM. If this RAM is compatible, then $365.00 for an 8 GB kit surely represents one of the most dramatic price drops I can remember seeing. I decided not to buy a Mac Pro just not even 6 months ago due to the outrageous cost of RAM upgrades.
I called the folks at Tiger Direct and, of course, they had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. Put me on hold for ages, looked around the store for someone who might know, whatever...I am almost inclined to pay the $533.00 and order from Canada RAM if only because RAM is all they do, and they know what they're talking about.
But it is a $192.00 post taxes difference in price, though, and when you're building such an expensive system, every penny counts. That differential amount sounds like a few extra internal HDD's to use for a raid array and Time Machine to me. It would be nice to get it right.

  • Kingston Memory

    Hello
I have two slots left in my Mac Pro so today I bought some more memory from PC World. The tech guy said it would work but I'm now paranoid it won't so before I fit it I wanted to check.
    It is the RMD2-800/1G. DDR2 memory.240 pin dimm. Compatible - 800mhz [pc6400], 667mhz [pc5400] & 533mhz [pc4300].
That is all the info I can get on it without opening up the packet. I have two of them to fill the remaining slots.
    Thanks

Can you not ascertain the Kingston part number for the package? You could then use the Kingston site to get the full specs. They also have a configurator you could use to check if the purchase is OK. I don't know off hand what the 2.66 takes, check on that and check the ram you have in that works. Actually look at it and note it's full specs. Others will tell you but I thought the 2.66 used 667MHZ. I do not know what effect putting ram in that is faster than the spec. What you quote suggests they claim it will work amongst 667MHZ. I wouldn't like to risk it but that bet depends upon the cost invested in it. The buffering and Error Correction such that the others mention certainly is important. My suspicion is that Kingston would have buffering and ECC correct for the MacPro. However you must check! There is a line of ram in Kingston and others that is aimed at gamers and is NOT error correcting. Several makers have a 'value' line that is usually not fit for the Mac Pro.
The salesmen at PCWorld often not always are somewhat ignorant of RAM especially for Macs. The actual texhnicins of the Dixons subsidiary 'Tech Guys' are more knowlegable.A number of times salesmen at PCWorld referred me to Maplin when I asked questions.
If you need to phone Kingston they are helpfull.

    Hi,
I got an Intel Core Solo Mac Mini.

1- My mac has 512 mo. Is it ddr2-SODIMM memory (I think intel is different vs G5) ?
    2- Is it 2x256 mo or 1x512 ?
    3- I want to upgrade to 1 gig, do I have to buy 2x512 ou 1x1000 ?
    4- Does this ram is compatible ? http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=221705 6&CatId=2268

  • Problem with threads and/or memory

I'm developing an application where there are 3 threads. One of them sends a request to the other, and if the 2nd can't answer it, it sends it to the 3rd (similar to CPU -> CACHE -> MEMORY). When i run the program with 1000-10.000 requests, no problem occurs. When i run it with 300.000-1.000.000 requests, it sometimes hangs. Is this a problem with the garbage collector, or should it be related to the threads mecanism.
(note: eache thread is in execution using a finite state machine)

i had been running the program inside Netbeans.
Running the jar using the command line outside
Netbeans i have no more problems... Does Netbeans use
it's own JVM?Depends how you set it up, but look under the options. There are settings for the compiler and jvm that it uses.

  • Mixing memory modules on Westmere

    Dear Hardware gurus,
I have a 12-Cores Westmere. Do you know is it possible to mix different memory modules on it, namely:
    6x1 Gb 1330Mhz
    +
    2x4 Gb 1066Mhz
and if yes, in which configuration?
Thanks a lot for any comment!

    Kappy, thanks for the note.
I am actually going to order some more 1333 modules, but just for the short time I have to work with what I have currently (see my original post).
As I posted above, I tried a bit already to combine the modules and Mac doesn't boot
Can you suggest a configuration, which will work?

  • Lock ups and dumping psyical memory!!!

Hi i have just installed a new pc most of the stuff im useing is from my old computer so i know they work fine im running a:
    P4 3GHZ Prescot 800MHz, HT-Enabled
    865PE Neo2-P
    512 DDR-400 Twin moss
    ATI Radeon 9000 pro
    PSU-400
    XP Pro
My computer locks up alot when running intense games (games have worked before no problem) i also get a error saying dumping pysical memory, i have looked about and tried to solve this myself, i found that someone was haveing the exact same problem as me and he fixed it by turning the FSB down as his memory wasnt compatable with his motherboard if doing that works how do i do it ?
    Many thanks Jonathan

Flappa, Your memory " clock" is fine and there is no need to "underclock it" as long as you did not mess with the Bios.
I had the same problems. I could not even get thru a Clean install of windows as it would Blue Screen
1- are you running in " Dual Channel Mode"?
2- If so is your memory a " match Set"?
    some times memory even thought it has the same markings is not matched . Dual channel sets are matched and made to run together in "Dual Channel Mode"{
( Even though I had the same manufacturer memory my set would not run in Dual Channel without " Blue Screening" I bought a Matched Set of Kingston Valueram and have not had a problem since
3- If it is not a matched set, pull one stick out and run it for a while , if it still bluescreens try the other stick
4- raise your memory voltage to 2.7 or 2.8 ( which ever is the lowest that it runs stable)
5- If all this does not work , run MEMTEST to see if there is a problem with both sticks
6- you are running a Bios Version that supports the " Prescott Microcode" right?
Let us know what your findings are
    Good Luck

  • Memory upgrade on Satellite M30-344

    Hi,
i have upgraded my memory from 2 x 256 mb to 2 x 512 mb, but nothing works. i bought the ram modules compatible to pa3312u-1m151.
this system doesn't boot, nothing happens. after reinstalling the old module, system starts normally.
    what can i do?

    Hi
This case is very clear. You have used not compatible memory modules.
As in the previous posting suggested, you should use the other compatible ram module.
If you dont know where to buy this part so please contact the Toshiba service partner in your country. There you will be able to order the right part.
By the way; I can confirm that the PC2100 512MB (PA3164U-1M51) is a right module

  • Memory upgrade on a Satellite A100-912

I own a Satellite a100-912 and I want to upgrade its memory!
As it seems, this model supports only PC2-4200 DDR2 SODIMM modules (533 Mhz). Before bying a memory module that might regret, I want to know if there will be any compatibility issues if I use to this laptop PC2-6400 DDR2 SODIMM module (800 Mhz).
Is it going to work even at lower clock speed (533 Mhz) or is it going to be a total waste of money?

As far as I know the FSB is able to handle 667Mhz modules.
You can use lower modules (533Mhz) without any problems but modules with higher Mhz will not run with full speed due to the limited FSB.
So I dont recommend buying 800Mhz modules. Firstly they are not supported and secondly its waste of money!
