PCI ATA and SATA question.

Anyone know if a Promise ATA PCI card I have on my PC would work on my "Digital Audio" Mac?
If not, can anyone tell me if there is an ATA & SATA (both in one) controller card compatible with this Mac?

Hi, Sergio!
The Promise card from a PC won't work. It has incompatible firmware, designed for PCs. You need a card with Mac firmware. Here are some examples.

  • IMac G5 (pre-iSight) Hard Drive Removal: ATA and SATA advice please!

I need to purchase a hard drive enclosure for the hard drive of my old 1st gen iMac. According to this article: http://www.welovemacs.com/ihaimg5whtyo.html - my iMac has an ATA drive, and is the only with that type. So my question is, before buying an enclosure, does it have to be specified for ATA hard drives only? I read some positive reviews about the miniStack v3 (http://www.newertech.com/products/ministackv3.php) and was considering it a good investment, but now I'm not sure if my stone age hard drive will actually run on it. I poked around their web site, but its a bit cluttered and couldn't find an answer, so I figured I'd turn to you guys; the experts!
Thanks for any help in advance! You guys are great!

Thanks for the speedy response. I'm looking through the website right now. But basically pretty much any recent enclosure holds both ATA and SATA hard drives? I got a little more information on my hard drive to clarify: Barracuda 7200.7 with 80GB. With that said, I'm probably just going to go ahead and order an enclosure and not worry too much about compatibility; however, I would feel better if someone could tell me if the miniStack v3 (link is above in the original post, says it can hold a max of 1 terabyte) is a definite "yes or no" given what I'm dealing with (and if anyone has had any personal experience with that enclosure, I would be glad to hear any general comments about it as well!) Thanks again

  • RAID PCI Necessary (and another question)

    Good Morning,
I just ordered an XServe with 3x80GB drives. I did not order the RAID PCI card.
Is the RAID PCI card necessary if I want to Mirror the boot drive to one of the other 2 drives in the Xserve?.
Also, If I were to setup up the 3 drives as RAID 5 configuration, how much usable drive space should I expect to have available?
(I also ordered an Xserve RAID with 4x500 GB drives. I will have 2 sets of mirrored drives from that for data storage)
    Thanks very much

    >Is the RAID PCI card necessary if I want to Mirror the boot drive to one of the other 2 drives in the Xserve?.
    Necessary? no.
Mac OS X can handle RAID 0 (striping) and RAID 1 (Mirroring) out of the box.
The Hardware RAID card can do RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID 5, so you only need the card if you want RAID 5.
Note that the card can also do RAID 0 and RAID 1 and should be faster since it offloads the work from the main CPU, but it isn't necessary.
    >Also, If I were to setup up the 3 drives as RAID 5 configuration, how much usable drive space should I expect to have available?
The general rule is that RAID 5 uses one drive for parity, so for a RAID 5 array with n drives you end up with a capacity of ((n-1) * drive size).
So in this case, with three 80GB drives you get (3 -1) * 80, or about 160GB of usable space.
    >(I also ordered an Xserve RAID with 4x500 GB drives. I will have 2 sets of mirrored drives from that for data storage)
That's not the optimal use of 4 drives in the XServe RAID.
With two sets of mirrors drives I assume you're intending to create two 500GB mirrored volumes which results in 1TB of usable space.
Compare that with a four-drive RAID 5 set which yields 1.5TB of usable space. You get 50% more volume that's still RAID protected against a drive failure.
OK, you might tolerate two drive failures in the mirrored scenario, but you'll have to decide whether that minor advantage outweighs the additional space.

  • K9MM-V and SATA Question

A few months back, I asked if this board could support SATA optical drives, since my DVD burner never was recognized. But since then I have also bought a SATA HDD in hopes of it working. Alas... it doesn't. I've tried contacting MSI Tech Support, but all they told me to do was test the drives in another computer.  OK...
So I tested them, and they were both easily recognized by the other computer. But they don't show up at all in the BIOS or Windows/Ubuntu.
Could someone please give me a run-down on how to, like... turn on(?) the SATA ports? It'd be really helpful. But I'm almost certain that this is a faulty board, but I find it odd that only the SATA ports don't work.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
And yes, Fredrik, I finally got a better power supply, so that's not the issue.

SATA optical storages will probably not works.
About SATA HDD's, you need to configure your SATA HDD to works in SATA1, that usually can be done by HDD jumper settings.
Well, you were right. I thought my HDD was 1.5GB/s, but it's really 3.0. I know this sounds dumb, but does anyone know if you can use PATA jumpers for SATA drives?

  • PCIe 16x and 4x on P35 Platinum questions

I have a P35 Platinum system with a Q6600 processor O.C. to 3.4 gHz.  I've got an 8800GTS card in the PCIe 16x slot.  I tried to add a specialized HD video capture card into the PCIe 4x slot and the system would not post.  What is the deal with the PCIe 4x and 1x slots "sharing"???  The HD capture card company (AJA) are convinced this is the problem.  I am too.  Is there ANY possible way to shut off this sharing?  Why is it there?
Also, every time I turn on the system, it briefly starts, stops, and then goes through the complete boot process.  What's up with that?
Thanks for any help on these two questions.
    Stuart

Not all PCI-E cards will be backward compatible to all PCI-E slots.
Usually the x1/x4 PCI-E slots are meant for SATA cards, RAID cards or sound cards.
x8 and x16 are usually meant for Video cards.
You have to check what slot can you capture card runs on.

  • PCI and SATA locks on neo4 Ultra Board

Where in the BIOS do I set the locks for the PCI bus and the SATA ports? And which SATA ports are locked?

Quote from: MMAN on 15-February-05, 15:43:38
1,2,3,AND 4 ARE ALL ON THE SAME CONTROLLER. 5AND 6 ARE ON THE SILICON IMAGE CONTROLLER.
With the Neo2, only two are part of the chip, the other two require an external interface chip (note not an external controller). It's still a matter of debate if it's the 2 sata which use the interface chip, or those which don't, which are locked. Either way it's ports 3 and 4 which are locked on the Neo2.
I expected the same with the Neo4, but found using 3 and 4 caused disk corruption when the FSB was increased, and shifting to  1 and 2 solved it.

  • KT266 PRO2 and PCI ATA controller

I have a lot of ide devices so I bought a PCI ide controller years ago. Now I got my little brothers motherboard. MSI KT266 PRO2, and plugged all my stuff into it. When it was time to reinstall Win, but it would not boot the cd, or from floppy. I checked the boot order, all looks fine.
Then I tried to take the PCI IDE controller out, and then it booted my winXP cd fine.
So basically, When the PCI ATA bios is loaded (the card), I'm unable to boot from cd-rom or floppy. Only boot from HDD1 works. So every time I need to reinstall windows, I need to unplug all harddrives from the PCI IDE controller card. Then windows is installed I can plug the harddisks back in...
I can't find an explanation to this...
No problem when the PCI IDE controller is used with 2 other motherboard I have. Latest bios is used on the motherboard and the pci IDE adapter card.
    MSI KT266 PRO2
    AMD athlonxp 1700+
    Sapphire Radeon 9600 PRO
    maxtor ata100 pci controller
    768 MB DDR pc-2100 ram

On the MB controller I have 2 harddrives on primary (one master, one slave), and 1 dvd-drive (master) and 1 cd-recorder (slave) on secondary.
On my ata controller card I have 2 extra harddrives for backup. Both on the IDE1. One as master and the other as slave.
    All drives are properly configured.

  • P67-gd65 sata and voltage question

For starters, this board is updated to the newest bios I found in the download section. The sata question is that, no matter if I use IDE or AHCI, I can only see my SDD and HDD if I have them plugged in to the white ports. The normal black ports don't show anything.
The second thing is about voltage. Is there any way to stop my voltage from rising during heavy CPU usage? It's really annoying to set it at 1.33v and then it goes up to 1.37v. I have everything manually set in the bios and the vdroop is on low. Is there anything else i'm missing? Thanks.
Edit: Turbo Boost and EIST are also off as well.

As mentioned, as long as it doesn't fluctuate or exceed past 1.400v's, it should never be a problem as far as component lifespan & longeveity are concerned. It may be best to open a ticket with MSI Tech Support & ask them about why the voltage reacts as it does & is set up that way. http://support.msi.com/

My SSD and HDD were in SATA 2 on the old motherboard, now this one will only work on SATA 3.
I would be suspicious of the Intel SATA II Controller being faulty within the chipset. Especially if no type of device, HDD or ODD works in those ports. Another thing to ask Tech Support about.
As a side note, it gets confusing sometimes when seeing the nomenclature SATA 2 & 3, as these are regarded as SATA connection ports on a mainboard.

  • HT5446 if i order a new imac with 1tb flash is that pcie based to where i could add a 3.5 ssd and does it still have the bracket and sata cable to add one in it

if i order a new imac with 1tb flash is that pcie based to where i could add a 3.5 ssd and does it still have the bracket and sata cable to add one in it

Be advices that the newest iMac's are basically SEALED Units and taking it apart in any way, other than removing the Memory slot cover to add more RAM (That is on the 27" model. The 21.5" is completely sealed), will void the warranty on it.
Not only that but the screen is Glued to the aluminum casing and if you do pry it off with damaging it you'll need new adhesive strips to remount it.
Not worth the efford or the cost when you can buy mat any other brand computer for less money and do all the upgrading you would ever want without ever voiding the warranty or breaking something in the process.

  • PCI ATA 133 RAID Card VS. PCI ATA 133 Controller Card

    Hello,
I just bought a 300gb HD to put into my QS. I know I need to add another ATA card, but I noticed in stores there is a PCI ATA 133 RAID and a PCI ATA 133 Controller card.
What is the difference? The ATA 133 Raid card I saw is considerably cheaper. Can I use it to run my 300Gb drive as my startup drive (iDVD issues!)?
    Thanks for your help.

Additional question: I have seen that there are a number of issues with SATA II drives in the early G5. Can you recommend a drive in the 500 GB range that would work well in the Dual 1.8 GHz? A SATA II would be a good option for the future... Thanks!

  • URGENT!!! Can ATA and SCSI coexist?

    hello fellas!
my case is similar of the post "Can SCSI and ATA coexist?', but with some differences:
    I own a G4 Dual 500–MHz PowerPC G4, 40Gb ATA + 80GB ATA. (http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G4_GigabitEthernet.html)
now I've installed a PCI SCSI card to connect tree more SCSI HDs: two barracuda 18Gb and one quantum 36Gb)
my G4 only reads SCSI drives when I disconnect ATA tape from motherbard...
when I plug ATA to motherboard again, neither SCSI mount on desktop, nor system profile shows it as a device, even when I start Hard Drive Update 1.app...
I've read all manuals from apple, jumped all SCSI HDs, but for some reason, it doesn't work at all!
so, the question, again, is Can ATA and SCSI coexist?
does anyone knows how to config it??
    thanks in advance!

    answering:
    - as my primary language is portuguese, i didn't understand when you said 'booting off the OS X disk'. do you mean eject it in the disk utility?
    - I have so many drives because e sold another G4 that used those drives atached with the pci card and I simply want to use it, because I'm short on cash... those drives are installed with OS 9.2 (the ATA ones are running OS 10.4.8)
when you said one ATA and 2 SCSI, you mean that if I simply disconnect the slave ATA and one of the SCSI it may works?
    thanks again!

  • Help requested with 645 Ultra-C with a PCI ATA/133 card fitted

I'm new here, so please bear with me if this plea for help is short of info :-
I built my PC 5 years ago, using a 645 Ultra-C board ( MS-6547 2.00 ) and have had no problems since - till now.
I recently installed a PCI ATA/133 card, mainly to be able to add 2 additional hard drives.  It installed ok and the 2 extra drives are recognised correctly on the card's primary channel as is a DVD device on the secondary channel.
However, on initial booting, the card is interrogated to determine what devices are connected to it and then there is a delay of up to 2 minutes ( it feels like forever ) while BootMagic is being searched for/loaded.
It makes no difference if I swap the 2 drives and the dvd over or remove the dvd drive.
The bios ( AMI 07.00T 12/20/01 )  is correctly setup to boot from floppy first, then HDD1 ( connected to the mainboard's primary channel) and 'try other boot devices' is disabled.
I have no wish to boot from the extra drives, so is there any way of avoiding the boot system from looking there first ?   Is there any other bios settings to consider ?
I'd be grateful for any hints/help.
    Thanks.

    Yes,
Go into bios and set boot sequence
Also go into pci controller bios, and set no boot
It's usually CRTL+A or CRTL+M keys on keyboard............
Controller cards will be main boot target, unless told
I have got the boot sequence set correctly - but I can see no sign of a pci controller bios option.  Cntrl A  or Cntrl M  have no effect.  Maybe the 645 bios doesnt offer those options.
I have never updated the bios - being of the 'if it aint broke dont change it' school of thought, so I may need to look at this area, now.
I'll be posting a question here about live update very soon - basically 'is it the best way to update the bios ?'
Thanks for your help so far

  • PCI ATA 66 Hardware RAID, follow up.

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1015242&tstart=0
Just to recap, the problem that I was having in this archived post booting OS X from my 120GB+120GB hardware PCI ATA66 RAID0 drive, was in fact due to the <8GB partition limitation. XPostFacto doesn't enforce this on the PCI card, and it worked for a while with no helper, until after the 10.4.10 software update, which must have written some files past the 8GB portion of the drive. I can now still boot from my hardware RAID, I just have to use a helper in XPostFacto, like if you were booting a FW drive.

Just to clarify, I was talking about the ACARD ATA66RAID hardware RAID card, it works in OS9 or OSX, when you set the dip switch on the card to RAID 0 striping, the OS sees it as large SCSI drive, and you can optionally install the OS 9 drivers with Disk Utility in OS X, or initialize it in OS 9 with Drive Setup. First you have to initialize each drive individually in normal mode before setting the striping switch. Booting OS 9 has a volume size limitation, though, (<190GB or 200GB, not sure exactly) and my 120GB+120GB volume exceeds that.
I am using two individually cabled Master drives, I think you can also stripe two Slaves with this card, so then you could set up a software mirrored RAID with the two striped RAIDS, there's just not any more room in the G3 Desktop for any more drives though.
Probably not too many folks use those cards, the ACARD 6860M, they were a lot more expensive when they first came out, but you might find a good deal on one now. You can probably get better i/o peformance and larger max drive size from ATA-100, ATA-133 or SATA PCI cards, not sure of the latest price comparison on those.
From memory, the built-in ATA gets around 16MB/sec, the PCI66 can get around 40MB/sec and so can external FW, the ATA66RAID can get up to 60MB/sec. There's lots of variation in those numbers depending on usage. Not sure what numbers you get with ATA 100/133/SATA...those are also more $$$.

  • New Hard Drive - ATA, ATA 133, SATA?

I have a PowerMac G4 Dual 1.42 FW 800. I need to add a second internal hard drive but I wasn't sure which type of hard drive I currently have installed and what the differences are between the ATA, ATA 133 and SATA.
Does the FW 800 model have the 128 gig limit for the hard drive if I use the existing hardware and cables?
Does the ATA 133 and SATA provide a dramatic performance difference to justify the cost of the new PCI card to support them?
    Thanks for your input.

Thanks for your response. Does the FW 800 have a gigabyte limit on the hard drive above 128? For example: 200 or 250? I would like to install a 250 gig.
Do I need to do anything special to install the hard drive. I know the FW 800 will take 4 hard drives but two run at 66 instead of the 100.
    Thanks

  • SATA and SATA II what is the difference?

    Dear Forum,
    Just a quick question.
I'm deciding on a new 3.5" Internal Hard Drive for my G5 DP.
They are listed as SATA and SATA II. Are both specifications compatible?
Any other prerequisites for the G5 Internal Hard Drive?
    Thanks,

SATA II is commonly assumed to mean it supports 3Gb (300MB/sec) but is more about specs.
I don't think anyone would be making SATA 1.0 which came out 7 yrs ago and which the PowerMac G5s up until the dual-core/PCI Express supported.
Most drives then are SATA II and backward compatible. And now we are seeing drives with SATA III specifications and 6Gbps.
If you want to know about a drive, visit the vendor and look it up.
