PCI cards, Airport cards...help me understand what is what and why?
Help me understand this wireless network "card" hardware stuff.
I have a dual 867 MHz G4 that I want to set up for networking with a PC so that both machines can access the internet (via DSL).
As far as I know, my Mac does not have an airport card of any kind. I'm planning to buy a Lynksys WRT 54G2 wireless router. Do I need to also install an airport card, or PCI card in my G4 to make this all happen? And, if so, what is recommended that will work with my G4?
The guys at the Apple store are telling me that all I need is a wireless router, and don't have to install anything extra, but what I'm reading on these various networking threads, is that just the G4 and a wireless router will not do the trick. After reading lots of threads here, it's sounding like I have to jump through hoops to set up a usable, working network. The Apple guy says that this is easy and basic. I'm thinking that THEY are thinking in terms of a newer machine, maybe? They're all young guys who probably think that nothing goes back farther than the iMac.
One thing the Apple guys were pushing is Airport Extreme, but at $180, I somehow thing I can get there for much less than that.
To make a long story short (hah...too late for that), what exactly do I need as far as a card, router, etc., and where do I get the right stuff (links would be helpful) to set up a Mac/PC network using my old decrepit G4?
Hi-
Networking Macs and PCs
Setup a Home Network
Create a small Ethernet network
MacWireless
Check the above links, and you will be better educated in the basics and requirements of various networks.
The easiest, and least hardware intensive is the Ethernet network. Also, Ethernet is fast.
A note about Airport; you machine only accepts standard 802.11b Airport cards. In a word, very slow.
Airport Extreme, or 802.11g, is much faster, and 802.11n is the fastest available. To get 802.11g or 802.11n in your machine will require a PCI adapter.

hello all
please can someone help me i have a lenovo H330 decktop pc 2/3 years old
it has 2 x 2.0 usb ports in front i want to replace with usb 3.0 pci card is it possable
or will i have to replace ports at rear instead
also were would be the cheapest place to buy amerzon or maplins ?
also what one do i need to buy ?
thank you paulhi Paul,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Looking at the IdeaCentre H330 specs, the machine natively supports USB 2.0 only so you cannot replace the front USB ports with USB 3.0. However, you're still be able to add a USB 3.0 port by getting a PCIe x1 USB 3.0 card.
- Link to picture
If you're planning to use more than 3 USB 3.0 devices at the same time, you will need:
1. A USB 3.0 PCIe x1 card (like this item).
Note:
The card requires a 5V external power. If there's no available molex connector on the machine, you will need to use the 5V 4 Pin Male Power Connector and set it up as shown in this picture. After setting it up, load up the cd and install the driver.
2. (Optional) For convenience, you can add a USB 3.0 Extension Cable.
I'm not familiar with amerzon or maplins but you can try getting these on amazon or a local retailer.

Firewire 400 pci card: help
A friend of mine installed a Firewire 400 pci card to expand my firewire capability-- it worked for 2 months and just died. Has anyone had this problem? Please share your thoughts and advice. Does this mean I have to buy another one, merely 2 months of use?
Thanks
KChenHi k chen:
Can you give us some more detail about your computer, and its age, and the name and manufacturer of the firewire card? With that we maybe able to help

Can anyone help me understand what "Excessive Probe Frames detected" means?
I am seeing many APs in a SWAN implementation generating the following errors. Clients seem to be getting disconnected regularly... Can anyone give me a guess as to what this means? The location where this is happening is a bit light on access points, but has ample radio coverage. A site survey and walkthrough was performed. Radio parameters were generated through site survey wizard... Thanks!

Managment frames cover all sorts of status polls, beacons & the like.
If you're looking for good references, O'Reilly has a "Definitive Guide to 802.11" that's pretty good.
I also have & use the Planet3 CWNA/CWSP/CWAP certification study books, published by Osborne. They're excellent study guides for the wireless stuff, and also make pretty good references.
(CWNA - Certified Wireless Network Administrator, CWSP - Security Professional, CWAP - Analysis Professional)
If you're gathering tools, a wireless "sniffer" can also be a Very Good Thing.
AirMagnet is (by my understanding) a "cadallac" system, and pretty expensive (~$5000.00)
WildPackets "EtherPeek" for wireless also appers to be an excellet system (but it's also ~US$ 2500 or so).
I use Tamosoft's "CommView" for wireless. It's a very good basic analyzer; it doesn't have all the bells & whistles, but definately gets the job done.
Full retail it's ~US$500.00.
If you mention that you are studying for CWAP, there's usually a good discount (~$300.00 for the full package).
You can also get a one-year license for ~$200.00.
You can put in all of your systems with aliases (MAC and/or IP) for rapid ID and see which system is sending what (and log it). It can also show you other interfering or malicious traffic.
It's hard to make an evaluation without actually seeing the traffic and the source/destination info.
It could be something as simple as bad drivers, it could be something much more complex ... no way to tell unless you can see what's actually happening.
The probe frames can be someone gathering information about your system, or it could just be a bunch of clients trying to associate.
What kind of authentication do you use (if any)?
Good Luck

Apple Application Support - What and why does this exists?
So I welcomed iTunes 9 on my computer and iOS4 on my music player (latter to a great commonly known regret). Now here is my question:
What is the "Apple Application Support" and why iTunes 9 must have it to run?
(Note: Normally many software products there have optional modules which one may wish or may not wish to install depending on required functionality.)
P.S. I did my Google "homework", so please kindly advise here substantively.See the second half of the following user tip for some information about what Apple Application Support is:
[iTunes for Windows, QuickTime, and Apple Application Support|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355263]
The MobileMe Control Panel for Windows also uses Apple Application Support nowadays, as per:
[MobileMe: "CoreFoundation.dll was not found" or " Apple Application Support is missing" alert|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2211] -
I have pluged this info in but for some reason it can not the product or anything about it.
I need to find: Software, Drivers as well as a operators Manual and any other information on the product, I just bought this item 1 month ago, New but it was just the card nothing else in the box with it. I thought their would at least be enough to get me going in the right direction. It was made for HP by ASUS but it seems no one knows about it? I do ned some help with this problem. I do not even know if it uses a remote!
I have it in a emachines T5212 with a Dual-Core Processorer, OS: Microsoft Windows XP PRO w/SP3, I also run MS Office 2007 Pro. Can anyone help with this?
Thank you until we talk again, peace be with you and yours.
RedThunderActually the simplest solution, as there seem to be next to no drivers available for your PC at the HP support page, would be to go here and order the HP Restore CD. You will need
both the PC name ( which was what you posted earlier) and the and product number for when you order the CD. Try CTRL+ALT+S and see if the product
information becomes visible.

Hi everyone! I have downloaded the Desktop Manager Software on to my desktop. I've clicked on the "media" option in the main menu.
I am brought to a screen that has 2 options. "Media Manager" and " Blackberry Media Sync".
Now, I want to download themes and wallpaper, but in order to do that, I need to select "Media Manager" correct? ... Unfortunately this option is not available. I have my blackberry on, and is connected to the USB port. I am able to click "start" on the "Blackberry Media Sync" option, but not on Media Manager. If anyone could help me out, this would be greatly appreciated. I am going absolutely insane trying to figure this out! Thx for your help!!!!
Much appreciated
~LinzIt seems clear to me that if you unplug your AirPort Extreme and those Wi-Fi networks still appear, they are not being created by your Extreme but by someone else's router. They won't be useful to you.
To eliminate confusion, open System Preferences > Network, and select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button. In the "Preferred Networks" list, select each Network Name and click the "–" (minus) button. Check the box "Remember networks this computer has joined". Click OK, then Apply.
Then select your PalmSprings network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu. Ignore any others that may appear there.
If you still have funky problems, try renaming your AirPort Extreme's network to something other than PalmSprings. Use "Palm Springs" (including the space character - spaces are OK) or something else. Other networks with similar or identical names will just confuse things.
Use a non-trivial WPA/WPA2 password for your Wi-Fi network. Give your Extreme base station a non-trivial password as well. These ought to be different from one another, but are not required to be. Doing so will preclude any concern about your network being "hacked". -
10.6 app rejected - can experts help me understand what to change?
Our app got rejected and even after appealing, they are unwilling to give us explicit feedback on what is wrong. It's been more than a month with the back and forth. They keep pointing to 10.6 guidelines and rejecting us. We're not exactly sure what is wrong! We haven't gotten a single example of what is wrong even after multiple messages from them and explicit asks from us.
I would love to get some guidance on what is wrong. Screenshots of my app are below at this link in order as you would use the app.
http://imgur.com/a/Htfbi
The app is for the Reality TV show - Dangerous Waters. The description for the app is as follows:
Follow the Dangerous Waters crew as they embark upon their quest to travel the globe on SeaDoo personal watercraft. This app allows you to get the latest location, images, videos and text updates from the DW crew. Perfect for use in between this new reality show episodes
We have made sure to include all images in standard and retina format. The app has 0 bugs that apple has pointed out and also has push notification enabled.
We are really at a loss on what to do to get the app approved. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! All the app does is repackage a website [ http://dangerouswaterstv.com ]. It doesn't do anything that can't be done with mobileSafari. No surprise it was rejected, I think.
Apple hopes that devs submit apps that work to showcase the platform while providing unique features that users can leverage.
Review's job isn't to help you build an app...that's something you need to work out on your own.

Can anyone help me understand what is going on?
My wifi router (Airport Extreme) is named "PalmSprings." I noticed today that when I try to connect to a network on my iMac from the drop down list of wireless networks, there are 2 networks called (1) "PalmSprings_2GEXT" and "PalmSprings_5GEXT." Both of these networks are locked, so is my network "PalmSprings." ALso, I don't have any other routers installed, or range extenders. What could this be? When I unplug my router and internet, those 2 networks still remain online. Have I been hacked? It could be my imagine, but my internet has been acting funky lately.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

Can someone help me understand what the measurement em stands for?
I have been running into the measurement em (or is it en) and I cannot find an explanation as to what it means. Can someone explain it to me with an example or two?
Thank you
Allen MacfaldaMurray *ACP* wrote:
It's a relative font metric. 1em means use the browser's default size, while .5em means use half the browser's default size. The default size is usually 16px, unless changed by some other CSS on the site.
Hi
To add to whar Murray has written, the relative font metric actually comes from the size of the letter 'm'. This means that if you have a width of 20em it will be 20 times the width of the letter 'm' in your chosen font not the browsers default font, (thats the theory). Some older browsers may use the browsers default font, (NN4, I did say old!) or even a few current mobile browsers.
It is also possible, (in a few modern browsers) to use en or ex for the mesurement, and these are based on the letter 'n' and 'x' respectively.

Help in understanding use of Rollover and rolloffs for text
I have a word in a sentence called "Outlines". When the user puts the mouse over it, I would like text to appear that will define what "Outlines'' means. How do I do this in DW MX2004.
I would also like to use the same method for a linked word as well.
Any help would be appreciated.
Dreamweaver NewbieI have a word in a sentence called "Outlines". When the user puts the mouse over it, I would like text to appear that will define what "Outlines'' means. How do I do this in DW MX2004.
Use the HTML Title attribute in code view.
<title="definition goes here">Outlines</title>
I would also like to use the same method for a linked word as well.
<a href="somelink.html" alt="outline" title="outlines are literary frameworks">Outlines</a>
In another scenario, you may wish to use the <acronym> tag which gives greater meaning to abbreviated terms such as NASA:
<acronym title="National Aeronautics and Space Administration">NASA</acronym>

"Artwork Not Modifiable"? What and why?
This is horrible. It makes me not want to upgrade any new Apple software to newer versions -- they just add restrictions. This one is nowhere mentioned in the iTunes "Help" feature.
I just noticed this problem one of my albums. It was interesting because only three of 20 songs were affected and nothing about them seemed different from those that had artwork (same format, ripped from the same CD at the same time). The artwork preview window in the lower left corner had the "Artwork Not Modifiable" message you described, and when looking at the song's info the Artwork tab was greyed out.
The workaround I found was this: First copy the artwork you desire to your clipboard, using Command+C. Then select multiple songs, at least one of which had unmodifiable artwork and at least one that had the appropriate artwork. I clicked Command+I (Get Info), which when multiple items are selected gives you a place to put artwork in the Info tab. I selected the artwork area and clicked Command+V to paste the artwork, then clicked OK. Seems to have worked each time so far.
Good luck! -
Small rmi program opens several ports; what and why?
Hello,
I'm a bit confused about my small rmi program.
It seems that more ports are opened than I expected, which could give firewall-problems if we're not careful.
You can see below

- i see a connection from 220 to 2171 and vice versa; 220 is my exported object, but why is there suddenly an active connection with 2171 ? Can I avoid this or should'nt it disappear after the object is bound ?

}I'm a bit confused about my small rmi program.
It seems that more ports are opened than I expected, which could give firewall-problems if we're not careful.
- i see a listening connection on port 220 and 1091; i understand thisGood.
- i see a connection from 1091 to 2170 and vice versa; 1091 is my rmi registry. why is there suddenly an active connection with 2170 ?That happens when the client connects to the Registry. I don't know why you think that's unexpected. This particular connection may be for DGC purposes, but there is nothing harmful or unexpected about it. Or it may be a client connection. Which is the entire purpose of the exercise.
Can I avoid thisWhy would you want to avoid it?
or should'nt it disappear after the object is bound ?Why?
why is there suddenly an active connection with 2171 ?Either also for DGC purposes or for a client connection. Why do you think this is a problem?
Can I avoid thisWhy would you want to avoid it?
or should'nt it disappear after the object is bound ?Why?
super(220);Why are you using a reserved port number here? Port 220 is reserved for IMAP v3 servers. See [RFC 1700|http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1700.txt]. Use a port number above 1024 please.
I think you're getting confused because you're running the server and the client on the same host. Run them on separate hosts, then running netstat on the server host will give you a much clearer picture.
