PCI Express Error - Qosmio G40-10Z

Yesterday i turned on my laptop and i got a black screen with the message "PCI Express Error"
I immediately started searching the web what this error might be and i discovered that it's a known problem with some Toshiba laptops.
http://www.nvidiadefect.com/qosmio-pci-express-error-t383.html
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=49108
http://www.nvidiadefect.com/toshiba-qosmio-g40-12c-t1149.html
Just a few of the many topics i found about this error.
I bought my laptop January 2009 as a demo model from a dutch store called Qplaza http://www.qplaza.nl/
Don't think i have any warranty beside the warranty i got from that store (2 years) but there are a few things i don't understand.
From what i understand is that there even was a lawsuite about this problem and that there indeed was a problem with the nvidia 8600 chips. But then why won't Toshiba or Nvidia fix the laptops with those problems?
From what i have read my laptop would have to go to special repair service to replace my motherboard and i will have to pay for that myself.
And that is IF they can fix my laptop.
I started searching the internet what the price costs might be but the answers didn't make me a very happy woman :-(
Isn't there another way to fix this problem?
And aren't there places where you can buy a suitable motherboard for this laptop?
Can anybody please help me?? My laptop was working perfectly and without any warning..poof...can't get it to work anymore.

Dear Debzel,
As the proud owner of an attractive piece of scrap with G40 stamped underneath, due to what is almost certainly the same fault as you have, I have been through the customer service route and found that they are not going to officially recognise that the n-vid fault exists on our laptops and will only offer you a repair at your cost.
Due to the conspicuous lack of messages on this forum regarding this inherent fault, I suspect that this message may be quickly removed from the site. Having taken advice from the chap who runs the n-vid defect website, I realise that the only way forward is to take on Tosh legally. The consumer has strong rights in the UK as I suspect is parallel in Holland (assuming that's where you're based). I would be willing to send you my letters, based on templates from the defect website and Consumer Direct (phone them if you're i the UK and get it from the horse's mouth that your product should have lasted longer than it did - 08454 04 05 06), but with some information about my personal situation added.
You also have to send a copy to the credit card company that you used when making the purchase, if that was the case, as this puts you in a stronger position. If you didn't use a CC then that's a shame but not the end of the road, you can still take them on and by all reports, you should be successful as the PC is very young for the price you would have paid. The other repondent to your post must work for Tosh, which is why they were so unhelpful.
Kind regards,
steve oram at bt inter net dot com.

    Hello Everybody ..
    I own a Toshiba Tecra M9 (PTM91E-04R03TEN)
    http://www.toshiba.ie/innovation/jsp/supportMyProduct.do?service=IE#tab0;
On switching on,- Its Showing the Toshiba splach screen and then "PCI Express error." on a black screen
I can't get beyond this Black Screen
    and I can't get into BIOS ??..
One time it did manage to boot up fully, I left it running for a while as I save information from the HDD. but then the problem started again .
I believe this is a problem with the nvidia GPU ( Fatigue cracking on the BGA )
I have the Laptop stripted down .. and have purchased ArctiClean , Thermal Pad, & Arctic Silver for the "repair"
Should I have somebody scan the hardware and to find the troublemaker ? ..OR.. should I just reflow the GPU .
    I'm technically minded .. but not a PC / Laptop technican :(..
any Instruction on how to proceed would be greatfully received ..
Should i just " bung it in the oven" and see how it goes ? :) :) .
    Regards,
    Peter

    Hi
I found and read your other post regarding this issue and in my opinion the PCI Express error is related to an PCI device (i.e miniPCI module like WLan / Bluetooth, etc ) connected to the motherboard.
Of course I cannot say for sure that this issue isnt related to a GPU malfunction.
Usually such details can be provided only by an service engineer who checked the notebooks hardware.
Generally I dont recommend to disassemble the notebook. Its very tricky to perform such procedure and of course there is always a risk of part damage doing such procedure without any instructions.

  • Qosmio G40-10Z: Question about energy use in sleepmode

When I turn my new Qosmio G40-10Z in sleeping mode, with full battery (and off the AC power), I can't start the computer next day. I can only start it up after connecting it to AC power. I get a message windows Vista wasn't closed properly and I am asked to start in normal way or safe mode.
After starting the battery indicates only 2% power. So, what is using power in sleeping mode? Why isn't the sleep mode not transferred to hibernation state when the battery is almost empty?
(New notebook, only vista and office installed and only television antenna is connected)

    Hello guys
At first I just want to write a little bit about theory. Microsoft has implemented standby/Hibernation mode to offer PC users comfortable OS usage and make switch ON/OFF time much shorter.
According to the definition standby mode should be used for short time (launch, meeting and if you must leave the notebook for few hours). Hibernation mode should be used if you leave the notebook over the night or maybe day or two. In standby mode all data will be written in RAM and to keep them notebook needs power. In Hibernation mode all data will be saved on to HDD and notebook can be switched OFF. In hibernation mode the notebook does not need permanent power supply.
For me it is really strange that you use standby mode with battery and almost 20 hours. With this I do not want to say that described battery issue is normal but for 20 hours it is logic to use hibernation mode.
Back to battery issue: only 20 hours under standby mode is really to short. I have tested it with my Tecra and after 5 days I was able to switch ON notebook as usual (only battery power supply.
In your case I see only two explanations:
    1. Somehow notebook can not switch into standby mode properly and stays running (I do not believe this because you can see if something like this happen)
    2. The battery is defective
What you should do is to contact Authorized service partner in your country. Make a call and explain the situation. Maybe you will get new battery or they should test it using your battery.
Sorry for this long posting. I wish you luck and hope you will clarify this issue very soon.
    Bye and good luck!

  • Qosmio G40 - Windows 7 64bit and missing drivers

Hello..i recently upgraded my G40 to win7 64bit and have been very dismayed at all the missing drivers.
    so far
1 Cd/hd dvd drive - driver not supported on this product - it was when it was on vista 32 - now i just get cd drive error.??
2 tv tuner - no driver available
3 av controller - no driver available
4 acoustic silencer - no driver available
5 finger print software - installed driver - no hardware found?? it definatly has one ..im looking at it.
6 hdmi control manager - no driver available
7 infrared driver- no driver available
some of these drivers i can do without - (finger print im not worried about 0 but the CD/HD DVD drive is a real problem..
Im normally reasonably fine with installing all these drivers...but it seems there are non there ..or they dont see the hardware....please help.

Wait a moment you are mixing something.
Do not mix CD/DVD driver and HD DVD driver.
When you install operating system optical disc drive must be recognized properly. If you have problem watching HD DVD movies that completely other issue.
So, is optical disc drive recognized properly? Can you use music CDs and watch DVD movies?
If you cannot find Toshiba HD DVD player for 64 bit OS try to use some other players. I don't have HD DVD media and cannot test it for you.
PCI memory controller is maybe cardreader.
By the way, here is the list of all installed stuff on Qosmio G40 (Vista) so you can check if everything is installed and if there is some missing driver. Please note: some additional software is not downloadable.

  • Qosmio G40-108 fails to start

    Hi Gang
I am hoping there are some fine peeps out there who can save a double-glazed window from being mullared by this lappy.
I have had it (Qosmio G40-108 with 4Gb RAM) since Aug 2007. All has been fine till about two weeks ago, where it kept crashing when running a couple normal progs that I use.
Having read several posts from peeps with similar problems, I think it could be the PCI express graphics card. Is this right? Can I swap it out? Or any tips, blaggs, ideas or suggestions are really welcome. :)
*Remember: There is always someone worse off than you...........*

Such behaviour is typical for overheating. When notebooks hardware reaches critical temperature, notebook will simply switch off to avoid hardware damage.
Your notebook is petty old so I can imagine there is a lot of dust inside and dust can block cooling vents and cooling grill so notebook cannot be cooled down properly.
Have you ever cleaned your notebook up?

  • What is new in BIOS Update v2.20 for Qosmio G40

  • Can Any one please help me find a compatible Wireless N MINI PCI Express Card for my HP G50-133us?

I have a HP G50-133US notebook, it currently has a Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter. I am looking to upgrade it to a B/G/NWiFi Card. I can find plenty of Mini Pci-Express Wireless N cards but not sure if they are compatible. Does anyone know if as long as it is Mini PCI-Express and have the correct drivers this would work? Or does anyone know if a known working upgrade that would work? Any help would be appreciated!! Thank you!.

You MUST get an HP branded wi-fi card AND it has to be on the "white list" for your computer in the BIOS or the card will block the computer from booting with an error message. Here is a link to your Manual:
    Manual
Page 19 starts the list of known compatible wifi cards.
You can search eBay by part number for the card and likely find one at a decent price.

  • Problem with BRIGHT.EXE in QOSMIO G40

    Hello and good morning,
I'm a new user here at the forum, and i hope i'm posting in the right place :).
I just bought, well in march a Qosmio G40, and i'm very pleased with it, but 3 days ago I noticed a problem with it, the program BRIGHT.EXE, which controls the brightness of the flatscreen is not working (well, it stoped working), when i press the button in the operacional front panel, or use the combination FN+F6 or F7, it doesn't work, windows says that the program BRIGHT.EXE gave an error but doesn't specify which error.
Does anyone have any idea of why it is happening and a way to solve it ?
    Best,
    Ricardo

Thank you guys for your answers.
I'll try first to install the Value Added Package first. Do I have to uninstall the version i have first? or can i start the instalation and it will uninstall automatically ?
And then if the re-installation won't work, i'll try to rollback my OS.

BTW: as i have Vista in Portuguese (:( ) i still don't have SP1 ehehe

  • X-Fi Fatal1ty PCI/-Express - All Hardware Acceleration Crashing, Significant R

    Hello,
I've made a few posts on the forums recently about various topics to help me isolate the issue I am having. At this point, using the latest stable drivers for either a PCI or PCI-E X-Fi Fatalty, any hardware acceleration of sounds is causing my system to bluescreen, freeze or crash the application. Some games give me no option of not using hardware acceleration (ie. Rainbow6 Vegas 2), resorting in my having to change my Sound Acceleration down to Emulation Only. This setting greatly eases off on the sound latency buffers, resulting in sounds that are delayed an entire second. The good news is no crashes and sounds actually sound correct.
A few things to note about my setup,
) I am an extreme computer professional, programmer and developer. My Windows XP SP2 installation is incredibly streamlined; I only have 6 services running and all non-essential drivers removed, resulting in only 69MiB commit charge at startup across processes and ~950 threads. Suffice to say, my system is baby-cheek clean, and I aim to keep it that way.
    2) I have been using this setup for many years now. I have been using NVIDIA video cards for the past 5+ years, currently I have a GTX280, and all of them have behaved perfectly with my streamlined setup. I even unregister every single one of NVIDIA's DLLs and stop all of their services, and the 3D Settings Per Application and Color Control Features still all work. Suffice to say, NVIDIA's drivers, although a trite on the large side, are written well enough to keep drivers away from OS services (as it should be).
    3) My other hardware is not at fault. I have tested the X-Fis against multiple PSUs, different video cards, multiple fresh installations of Windows and more. I don't use utilities to clean my drivers; I do it by hand. I know exactly what's on my system and what I want removed. Though it may be egotistical to state, I'm pretty much knowledgable of every component my system has running.
    4) As a result of this knowledge and my desire to keep my system clean, I ONLY HAVE INSTALLED the drivers necessary for my X-Fis to work. I DID install Creative Audio Console, but the application seems to have too many dependencies on OS Services, since it never runs, either reporting that my audio device cannot be found, or the application simply does nothing and a bogus error is written to the event log. I have enabled DCOM to make sure it wasn't dependent on that, and it still does not work. To summarize, yes, I have tried enabling every service I could find that it might depend on, and none worked. Creative Audio Console is, to me, a piece of ill-written software. In comparison to NVIDIA's excellent control panel which works no matter how much stuff I remove, Creative's Audio Console fails.
I do not have the Creative Audio Licensing Engine, I do not have the Creative Audio Control Panel, I do not have the Creative Labs Audio Engine Service, I do not have CMSS or any other OS-level services that normally get installed. Remember people, drivers are NOT TO BE DEPENDENT on OS services; they are protocols defining to the OS how to communicate with the hardware. Any necessity of additional "service" software is way past the acceptable standards of drivers.
    5) That being said, I had no issues with stability using older drivers on my PCI X-Fi Fatalty cards. These drivers were dated early 2007, and did not install all of the X-Fi Effects, Utility Effects, 20x Effects, etc. drivers. Mind you I preferred these drivers since they were much simpler to track, as they only had a few .sys files.
As it stands, I want to use my PCI-Express X-Fi Fatalty, but I want to use it without all of Creative's bloat. I want streamlined, driver-only installation that does not NEED external applications to reinforce its stability. Creative, IS THAT POSSIBLE? Can someone, by definition of the Windows Driver Management signature system, just use your drivers alone for stable gaming? If not, you're violating standards and should never have received WDM cert. on any drivers. I highly recommend you do NOT spit back, saying that for proper functionality, performance, stability, etc. you must install all of Creative's supplemental software. These requires are in violation of the ethics behind software drivers and receiving Digital Signature Certification from Microsoft on your drivers.

    Infinity7,
I do not want to sound arrogant, but the list of options you provided me with is the stereotypical laundry list of system configuration information for any piece of hardware. I'll address everything though.
) No, I'm not using an NVIDIA chipset. I'm using an ASuS Maximus Extreme, just like you said, which uses the X38 chipset.
    2) I'm using Windows XP 32-bit, SP2. I have 2 GiB of memory and do NOT have PAE enabled.
    2) I don't have onboard sound; our motherboard has a PCI-E sound card which I do not have installed.
    3) I don't have any spyware. I don't browse the web on my system. I know every program running and have no rootkits. Nothing is hiding from me.
    4) I don't use antivirus programs. I've been on the internet for 5+ years now and have never needed an antivirus program, since I know when I have a virus and I remove it manually.
    5) I have the latest version of DirectX, June 2008 Redistritutable. Note that most of the post DX 9.0c revisions are meant for D3D, and have nothing to do with DSound.
    6) I've tried every PCI-E slot I have, including both PCI-E x slots and both PCI-E x6 slots. The card is currently in one of my x6 slots.
    7) Any 998+ system is going to have IRQ sharing. Between ACPI BIOSes (more IRQs), Windows XP and drivers, IRQs are rarely in conflict, aside from occasional USB device IRQ sharing. To answer your question, yes, currently both my video card and sound card are sharing IRQ 6. I have done enough work to isolate that IRQ sharing is NOT the issue, though, especially through my testing of the PCI card and the PCI-E card experiencing the same issue.
    8) The output sampling rate of games is not always configurable, and never makes a difference. The X-Fi always upsamples everything it gets as it is, though I guess there is some validity to the sampling rates that are streamed into the buffers.
Now, to address the rest of your suggestions I say read my post. I specify that changing acceleration to emulation results in perfect stability and sounds that sound correct, however the relaxed latency results in sounds? that are easily delayed by second. This is unacceptable for gaming, obviously.
As for your ordering of driver installation, it really is through lack of knowledge that people state what order drivers must be installed in. Even NVIDIA's drivers probe for any change through the interfaces they use when the system starts, so any chipset drivers that drastically change the devices in Windows will be detected as changed by other drivers. Be that as it may, I didn't even have the X-Fi in my computer when I installed this latest version of Windows. Only after I had installed everything did I begin to install the Creative Drivers (whilst avoiding all bloatware).
Most importantly, note that I determined when the crashing started occuring with my original PCI version of the card. After I installed the drivers that started including the additional .sys files (X-Fi Effects, 20X effects, etc.) the crashing occured. As far as I know I cannot use older drivers with the PCI-E model, so rolling back to those previous drivers is out of the question.
    Lastly, for my system specs,
Motherboard : ASuS Maximus Extreme X38 Chipset, BIOS 0907
CPU : Intel QX9650 (OCed from 3.0GHZ to 3.6GHZ, stable through Orthos testing)
Memory : (2) GiB Corsair Dominator Sticks, 4-4-4-2
Video : eVGA GeForce GTX280 FTW Edition (PCI-Express)
PSU : Thermaltake Toughpower 200W (backed by UPS)
Sound : Creative X-Fi Fatalty PCI / PCI-Express (tried both independently)

  • R710 error while booting - pcie training error: integrated raid

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-K869T-DW592-PowerEdge-R610-R710-iDRAC6-Enterprise-Express-Remote-Access...
Throw one of those in there.  If you need it 1 time, it paid for itself.

I have an r710 and just now booted it for the first time.
First thing it does is check the ram then it looks for the iDRAC card (which I don't have) and then after that is when it displays the error:
    pcie training error integrated raid
    System halted.
The pcie card I have in the raid slot is the PERC H710 raid card.
The green LED on the card blinks/flickers so I am hoping that's normal for it to do that.
The BIOS version on the R710 is 6.0.7.

  • Problem of PCI express link width and speed

    hello,
I instantiate the pci express core v1.7 into a pci express endpoint and the core was configured as GEN I x8 or GEN II x4. By using the example design Xilinx offered in the ipcore dir, I could read and write device by PIO mode.
However, when I check the device’s link width and speed by using lspci –vvvv in Linux, I found that no matter what configurations I set, the device link is always trained as GEN I x1, which means the throughput of device, reduce 8 times. May the most important problem is that all logic in the user layer upon transaction layer are written at 250MHz, and if link width and speed are limited 2.5G/T and x1, I need to change user logic circuit which is a huge work.
So my question is how to change the PCI express link width and speed in OS side, or I need to change a new motherboard?
(I guess it related with motherboard, and I check that the PCI express slot in motherboard support GEN II X16. Another issue, when I insert a PCI express GEN II x8 device, the device is also trained as GEN I x1).

  • MSI K8N Diamond - PCI Express x1??

First, excuse me for my bad english, I'll try to do it well
I was searching for information about "MSI K8N Diamond", MSI motherboard with SLi technology. In the specifications web, I read that they are 2 PCI-Express x1 Slots in this motherboard. Exactly the information is:
    • Two PCI Express x16 slot (supports PCI Express Bus specification v1.0a compliant)
    • Two PCI Express x1 slots (support PCI Express Bus specification v1.0a compliant)
    • Three 32-bit v2.3 Master PCI bus slots (support 3.3v/5v PCI bus interface).
But when I came to see the motherboard's image, I couldn't found these two slots anywere. There they are 2 PCI-Express x16 and 3 "normal" PCI slots...
So, the question is if somebody knows where are those slots, or if it's only an error in the specifications web page...
    Early thanks!!

If u check the msi website and click the flash about the K8N Diamond it shows that it has
2 x PCI Express 16x/1x - meaning if one port is running 16x (i.e. non SLI) then the other can be utilised as a x1 port
bogus I know - especially seeing as the Asus board can support extra x1 slots

  • 2x K8N Neo 4 - PCI express problem

    Hi,
I've received 2 motherboard K8N Neo4 MS-7125 and both of them have the same problem ie the PCI express seems dead (bip error indicating a video problem). When I use an old PCI video card, I've an initialization and something on the monitor but I'm unable to boot or access the bios.
Of course, I've tested both motherboards with several PCI-Express video cards, new PSU, new DDR, resetting the bios, unplugged all devices like HDD and optical drives.
I'm surprised to see two motherboard of the same type with the same failure at the same time. They are a little bit more 3years old (3y+4months and 3y+1month)
Anybody with the same problem ?
(I hope it's not a default of this K8N series as I have also this motherboard model in one of my computer  )

    Not all PCI-E gen2 VGA's can works in PCI-E v1 slots...
The RX700 and NX6600GT were previously installed on these motherboards. They are working on another computer too.
I'm relatively sure that it's a motherboard problem in both cases.
I'm just surprised to see 2 motherboards with the same 'default' at the same time.
